14 Best Broward County Restaurants That Make Us Want To Move - Miami - The Infatuation

"Food isn’t the reason you’re coming to this Lighthouse Point seafood restaurant—history is. Cap’s Place is nearly 100 years old, and it feels that way. To get here, you have to take a 90-second boat ride from a nearby marina. Once dropped off at the dock, you can head right to the dining room for a cold glass full of bourbon (which they refer to as a “Manhattan”), or spend some time at the bar, a separate wooden shack that would probably look very familiar to a time traveler from 1929. Get something fried, or just fill the table up with nothing but crab cakes, the only thing on the menu we’d swim back for. But more than anything, Cap’s is a place to sit back and feel grateful that the spirit of old South Florida hasn’t been completely paved over." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo, mariana trabanino

Cap’s Place Review - Lighthouse Point - Miami - The Infatuation

"If you love museums, but think you’d love them more if they free-poured cocktails like they were hired by an enemy to make you sleep past your alarm clock, then you might love Cap’s Place. This Lighthouse Point seafood restaurant, which has been around since the ‘20s, is not making mind-blowing food. But the crab cakes are great, the fish of the day does the job, and the history of this place has been preserved beautifully. Cap’s Place knows that history is its biggest strength. Photographs and documents that are nearly a century old line the wooden walls. Along with a menu, your server hands you a piece of paper that provides a history lesson on Cap’s, in addition to a hilariously random list of notable attendees that include Ken Burns, Walt Disney, Al Capone, and Paris Hilton. 10 Restaurants Perfect For A Day Trip Outside Miami

"Drive Time: 45 minutes Cap’s, which has been around since 1928, is Broward County’s oldest restaurant. The seafood spot is accessible only by boat, but they shuttle patrons to and from the dock continuously, so don’t worry if you don’t have a watercraft handy. Al Capone and Winston Churchill have both eaten here, which is pretty cool. They do a pretty famous hearts of palm salad and have plenty of other seafood dishes. But you don’t necessarily come here for the food. You come for the history, experience, and to potentially use the same butter knife as the guy who got the UK through WW2." - ryan pfeffer, carlos c olaechea

When here from Mother’s Day weekend celebrated with my parents, food was just as fresh as describe our server was knowledgeable about the menu apart from the host who seemed and taking it back because we did not have reservations however or wait was only for 25 minutes. I would definitely recommend here as the portions are good and the boat ride to the restaurant is also an added plus.

When the most enjoyable part of the dining experience is the boat ride to the restaurant, you know there are major issues. The history of the place is interesting. But, the 100 plus year old restaurant shows signs of disrepair. Historic buildings can be old without appearing rundown if properly maintained. We were enthusiastically greeted and seated by the hostess. In contrast, our server was low-key. He seemed to be going through the motions of service. He was detached, perhaps not feeling well. The food was inconsistently prepared. My daughter enjoyed the crab cakes. However, my seafood platter was overcooked to the point of being almost inedible. For over $40 a plate, they should be able to hire a chef who knows how to cook seafood. If not, take the item off the menu. It is a shame that the food, service, and ambiance do not match the history of this place. I will not be back or recommend this place to others.

Wow! What a gem! 98 years of history still standing. We had a great time at the bar with Mike. Definitely returning

A unique experience. The food was delicious, but expensive, especially since they don't give you the biggest portions. The menu is limited, not that that is a bad thing. The boat ride over was cool, and it was neat to eat in a historic restaurant. The staff was great as well.

An institution! This is a MUST visit when in the area. When we have visitors in town we ALWAYS take them to Cap’s Place. You will not find anything like this in all of South Florida. Incredible piece of history, the staff is always super friendly and the food is always fresh! Do not miss any of the seafood specials, the hearts of palm salad and the home made key lime pie. They always usually have a great cocktail they are mixing up too. Make sure you get there early to have a drink in the bar next door. Incredible history has happened here. Don’t miss out. If the walls at Caps Place could talk! And make sure to look up the directions on where to park your car. You need to take a boat over, which is part of the fun! Call ahead of time if you need special parking for someone in your group. They can accommodate.

For 20, maybe 30 years I've heard and read about this place. Finally I got my friend to actually drive me to it. It's authentic. I loved the atmosphere, it smells of old wood, not unpleasant, decorated with funky old Florida primitive paintings, nautical bric-a-brac and ancient framed newspaper and magazine clippings. The menu is pleasingly short, not overburdened with choices. Our party of three ate very well with high-quality ingredients. The seafood platter had some of the sweetest-tasting scallops I've eaten and some nicely sized shrimp. The crab cakes were outstanding, big pieces of crabmeat nestled in a delicious breading. The swamp cabbage (heart of palm) salad was terrific, served with a seasoned mayonnaise. Our outstanding waiter came by showing us the actual heart of the palm tree from which our salads were made. The key lime pie was on point, not too sweet with a lovely tangy tartness on a slightly crisp crust. The bar was closed, but they did pour me a scotch to begin and kept the Heinekens coming during my meal. An altogether a memorable meal, including a free boat ride!

Historical Bar and Restaurant. The bar is separate from the restaurant and has a bunch of memorabilia from over the years. Wooden floors and ceilings and a Cool vibe. Delicious Snapper that tasted like they just caught it and brought it into cook. Fresh salad and scrumptious rolls with butter. Great views of Intracoastal and Marina.

Finally had a chance to check out this local landmark in Lighthouse Point. Caps place has been around since the 1920’s and I can see why. Be sure to make a reservation in advance, there are only about 12 tables. To get to the restaurant you have to take a water taxi, It’s about a 3 minute smooth ride. If it is a rainy day, I do not recommend but they do have umbrellas if needed. The place does look like a hole in the wall but we all know the best food comes from places like this. We arrived early so we could spend some time at the bar. No fancy cocktails, this is a real old school bar. When our reservation was ready we headed to the hostess stand in the other building. Our server brought some delicious warm bread and explained the specials along with other items not listed on the menu. Note, the menu specifically says “Good food takes time, all food is prepared to order”. We started with the blackened Mahi bites. So fresh, tasted like it was caught that morning. I also got a house salad, the creamy garlic dressing is to die for. For entrees we both got the crab cakes. They were full of lump crab meat with a touch of dill flavor. They included a side of green beans that were definitely canned but they seasoned well & horseradish mashed potatoes that I really enjoyed. For dessert we saved room for the Lime Pie. It was very tart but the sweet graham cracker crust balanced it out. Overall we had a great experience.

Yelp
Even though I had this place bookmarked for years, I never visited when I lived in Broward. I decided to make reservations here for our 10th wedding anniversary, since we were in town for a birthday party. I even received a voicemail and text message from Caps the day of. Our reservation was at 9pm and the voicemail had requested we be at the dock at 8:45pm. Howe, when I called back, she requested I be at the dock by 8:30pm. We decided to take an Uber to the dock since it was our first time visiting. Luckily, there was another couple who joined us at the dock who have visited Caps previously. There was a young kid who docked his boat at the dock, which was confusing but the Caps boat came shortly after and chased that other boat away. We were greeted by the captain and welcomed aboard. I wish the ride was longer but still nice anyway. Fun fact, after residing in Florida for 15 years, this was my first boat ride in the state! Since we arrived early, we decided to head to the bar first. We had no idea it was separate from the restaurant. I am glad we went though because it was awesome! Talk about stepping into history! Luckily there were only 4 patrons-2 at the bar and 2 at a table. The bartender greeted us and offered us drinks. I ordered an extra dirty martini and hubs ordered a beer. We made our way to the restaurant close to our reservation. The host greeted us, led us to a table, and wished us a happy anniversary. Our server soon after greeted us. Even though we had our drinks still from the bar, we ordered a bottle of wine. That was quickly brought over & served to us. We then attempted to place our order and when hubs ordered chicken (he does not eat seafood), we were informed they ran out. We were very sad and the only item hubs was interested in was the hearts of palm salad. I ordered the crab cakes entree with the loaded mashed potatoes and vegetables. We also ordered a house salad with extra dressing. The food arrived quickly and everything tasted good. The crab cakes came highly recommended by the woman we were on the boat with and I'm glad I took her word. They were super filling though and I barely got through it. The mashed potatoes were good but I think I was expecting something insane with the description of loaded lol. The Palm salad was good but holy crap-it was $20! We ordered a slice of key lime pie for dessert because my sugar was dropping and it was really good. Our server even delivered it to us with a little candle for our anniversary! That was really sweet. Overall a fun experience and we are hoping to visit again when we are in SoFL again.

Yelp
The ferry needs to be refurbished. Captain was great! Water was leaking inside not a deluge but the cover needs to be replaced. Our server Melissa was great and she made excellent Martini's! We had Calamari with various sauces. My Escargot was good however it needed more garlic. Warm delicious bread and butter. We ordered the seafood platter however the Scallops were not prepared properly, they were fried and Scallops should have a beautiful sheen when prepared properly. Expensive entree's but not prepared with any seasoning or flair. Very boring presentation on our seafood platter,French Fries were soft not crispy. Needs to be updated.

Yelp
The boat ride was nice, something different The food was small portions but, very good and tasty The service was good The VERY NEGATIVE The prices ..... we were charged $7 MORE per plate on our bill than listed on the menu . When we brought the discrepancy up to the waiter it was ignored and nothing was done about it....SO KEEP A MENU AT THE TABLE...that was not so cool!!

Yelp
Went to Cap's tonight for the first time in 35 years and was a little hesitant due to recent reviews saying it's gone downhill. Well, those reviews are just wrong. We stopped at the bar for a cosmo and an old fashioned before heading into the restaurant. Our server, Benita, was an absolute gem. So attentive and friendly and gave us a ton of great trivia about the place. We started with calamari and escargot - both to die for. I had the crab cakes (amazing) with a wonderful side of mashed sweet potatoes. So good. My husband got a giant piece of mahi mahi that was the best I've ever tasted. I really wanted key lime pie but we were too stuffed in a good way. I'm so glad we gave Cap's a chance because we will definitely be back!

Yelp
At one point a long time ago this restaurant received awards and many accolades. It is known for its history being from the 1920s. Although it has charm and some nice views of the intercoastal it needs to have the menu updated as its heavy, tired and rather bland. The shrimp on the seafood platter were over cooked and dry dry. I can now say I've been to Cap's place by boat but will not be in a hurry to return.

Lady K.

Yelp
I wanted to love the place but it fell short of my expectations! The menu was surprisingly small with few choices, but I chose the Seafood Platter with fries. Starters were Calamari and Escargot with Martinis. The appetizers were bland with no seasonings, and the Seafood platter included Scallops, Shrimp and Mahi Mahi; all of which were lack luster; bland and fried too hard. The scallops were so tough, you needed a knife, which I left unfinished! Our server Melissa was great; the Martini's were good. Other than that.. I would not return nor recommend a friend.

Yelp
Great place to eat!! Went here to watch the LHP boat parade and it was a great time! The fried snapper was excellent!!! I wish they included the entire thing from head to tail though. The sauce that came with it was so delicious and made the entire dish. Mashed sweet potato's were indeed sweet ! The boat driver recommended the crab cakes and they did not disappoint. Filet was also very tasty ! overall a very enjoyable experience and a Lighthouse Point Staple!

Yelp
Wow! Is all I can say. A true surprise. Overall we give the restaurant four stars. The seafood is well prepared. This is not red lobster where everything seems overcooked. So, I can understand some of the negative comments. I would recommend this place for a treat, a special place to bring out of town guest and etc. Basic ambiance not fancy but the area/location is beautiful and special all by itself. If you make reservations get to the ferry 30 minutes early it runs every 10 minutes between the restaurant and the dock. Stop at the bar and get a well made drink'

Yelp
My daughter took me to Cap's for my birthday I love Crab Cakes.. she said they have the best crabcakes anywhere. I must agree they were amazing. The hearts of palm salad $18 ish was however, very underwhelming sliced hearts of palm mayonnaise and paprika... I definitely could've passed. Our waiter tall gentleman dry since humor was great. Don't remember his name think it started with a J Jerry or Jim The ferry driver said three words coming and going "watch your step" Did not offer a hand tho to help you in or out.. also disappointing. So in short go to Cap's for the Crab cakes everything else is a Crapshoot.

Yelp
Dinner here with a friend. We shared a hearts of palm salad and both ordered crab cakes. Everything was excellent. Server Benita took good care of us. We will be back soon.

Yelp
Cap's was recommended to us by a local who told us about this unique restaurant. First, you are shuttled to the island restaurant by a water taxi. Captain Joey was adept at driving that thing! Second, this place was obviously very old as there was not one straight wall outside. It was like being in a nautical fun-house. Third, our waitress Melissa was warm and funny. She was like a floor show all in herself. And fourth, the food was outstanding. We had a killer crab cake and escargot to start; my wife had scrimp scampi over pasta and I had a fried red snapper which was perfectly done. The place was hoping on a Friday night and without reservations, we waited almost an hour. Understandable but the hostess was anything but hospitable! She was short with us and jumped on us as we went back inside to be out of the wind that 'it's not even 10 minutes'! Yikes, I was paying to eat there, she could have been nicer. The bartender wasn't very friendly either, neither the hostess or the bartender eked out even the smallest of smiles. It was busy but if it's too busy for them or they were too old, maybe get more help. Regardless of that, the kitchen serves the food quickly and Melissa was attentive and funny; and the food spoke for itself! Give it a try for yourself. Well worth the grouchy staff...

Yelp
The nicest part of the restaurant is being able to catch a ride on the boat to the location. Food was extremely bland pasta was dry and for $45 dollar dish you better blow my mind. Escargot was yummy. Our mash potato was under seasoned food over all was disappointing especially for the cost. Servicer was missing most of the time table next to us got annoyed he had disappeared for such a long time. When they ordered, they just put an in full order to avoid delaying any effort.. the historic restaurant has seen better days just has loyal clients, there is many other better locations to eat in lighthouse point.

Yelp
Very very nice staff Have to take a boat ride to get you there supplied by them. Great views, then everything goes down hill. Food is horrible, served cold and over cooked . Service doesn't exist never check to see if ur happy or not . This place should have closed a long time ago over priced hole in the wall.

Yelp
Enjoy a special treat. Come early and experience a true Florida legend. Great hospitality and phenomenal food!! You will not be disappointed. Quick little boat ride. Seafood is amazing. It is not cheap but this is a small Restaurant worth the money.

Yelp
This place has me torn. It's the kind of place that the ambiance and history make it what it is. Otherwise, it's just ok. The parking lot is located at the yacht club and you take a very quick boat ride (3 min or so) over to the bar and restaurant. We were seated at our reservation time and ordered drinks. Server was dry humor but kind and started off very attentive. We had the heart of Palm salad and calamari as appetizers. Heart of Palm salad was good- unique- but not over the top outstanding. It needed salt (an easy tweak table side). The calamari was very good, fresh and clean oil was used. My son devoured it. We all had fish entrees - broiled- w varying sides. My son had their pasta and loved it. The service took a big dip when our waiter was assigned a huge table about half way through our meal. There was also a woman having a medical issue and they had to relocate our table. They handled it discreetly, but I was a little shocked they didn't offer us a drink or free appetizer to compensate for us having to move rooms mid meal and the distractions occurred. (Happy to report- She was ok!) Our entrees took a very long time and getting the waiter's attention after moving rooms and the large party arrival was almost impossible. We got key lime pie to go and it was very very tart. Didn't get packed w whip cream but that would have helped cut the tart and we saw it served w whip when on plates at the restaurant. A three star is absolutely fair. Cool place, prices are very high for the portions and service was hot and cold. I would go back but I would probably stick to the bar.

Yelp
We made reservations for Valentines Day at Cap's Place at my request. I have wanted to return here for several years as I came many years ago and loved it! I remembered most of the history behind this 100 year old establishment, once a speak easy and casino, especially that surrounding prohibition with much more information located online. It was hard to find parking on Valentine's Day at the off sight location where a small boat picks you up. We had to wait for a second boat because of the many arriving Valentine customers like ourselves! It was just as I remembered, old and rustic but well maintained. We were seated immediately at a table in a back room with a view of the intercostal on one side and small Lake Placid on the other. We enjoyed the sunset view and were greeted by our server LJ who explained everything in detail. All the other dining rooms looked filled. We started with their specialty Hearts of Palm salad and i ordered a sautéd whole split yellowtail snapper with mashed sweet potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the crab cakes and steak fries. Both came with a vegetable of the day. Our salad and hot rolls came out first. The food is made fresh to order so it took a little while to arrive. We were both very happy with our meals. The home made key line pie sounded good but we were too full. After dinner, we stopped at a small building where the bar and bathrooms were located and got to see more of the history and memorabilia all over the walls. We boarded our little boat back to the parking lot happy and satisfied having enjoyed a romantic delicious valentine's dinner. We will return on a less crowded day!

Yelp
It's been several years since our last visit. The boat ride from the parking lot to the "island" was OK but the captain didn't speak or tell us the story of Cap's Place like before. The greetings by the hostess and server were friendly and made us feel welcome. Our server, Benita, did a nice job being informative about the menu, being talkative, and being efficient. We enjoyed the popover rolls and she brought a second basket. The food came very quickly and was good. Our party enjoyed the yellowtail snapper, crab cakes, and fried shrimp. Too full for desert. We were back on the boat in about 70 minutes.

Yelp
Oh my, what an unexpected surprise. We were in the area and looked up in Yelp for a waterfront restaurant. Picked Cap's place, parked and thought we were going a little nuts because we couldn't find it. Friendly neighbours then explained the boat shuttles customers to the island restaurant. We should have known, the name kind of gave it away. High tide, cool weather and huge full moon. Perfect night. We had not booked so went to the bar for a drink. The wait time was a lot shorter than we were told. We were greeted by Melissa, she shared a whole lot of specials that were not on the menu but we had already understood that the crab cakes were a must have. They did not disappoint. The best I have ever tasted. We had the scallops wrapped in bacon, the palm heart salad (special), the fish mix main course, and home made key lime pie. Melissa went out of her way to share the history of this iconic location. She is one of the specials of the place. Thank you. I highly recommend for excellent food and experiencing a piece of history.

Yelp
We had a large family gathering here and we're all lifelong residents. The server wasn't engaged & never smiled. The menu is limited and food was just so so. Two items on the menu were not available, even though we had a 6:30 reservation. Two of our party asked for a 2nd glass of wine and were told they ran out. We left disappointed all around.

Yelp
WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!! Best crab cakes that we have ever had, and we will be 70 years old this year!!!!!!! It is so so much fun to get to this rustic restaurant!!! You park your car in a big parking lot, and there is a water taxi that will bring you to this fun, amazing restaurant! Service, ambience and food is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! What a wonderful experience!!! But to end this lovely evening, we ordered the key lime pie. Honestly, I have never enjoyed this kind of pie, but after trying this pie at Cap's , I LOVE key lime pie!!! I also love that this restaurant is kid friendly, they will enjoy taking the water taxi!!!

Yelp
Fresh seafood, old school quirky bartender, a boat ride --what more could you want. While it doesn't look like much has been done to the place since it opened -- it was a supper club/casino in the 1930s (you know what that means). We had a delicious, not greasy fried yellowtail snapper, crab cakes that are 95%+ crab. And friendly service. Great outing.

Michelle T.

Yelp
Danny was great! Very friendly and entertaining. The food was hit or miss--we liked all the appetizers we got (crab cake, fried calamari, blackened fish bites and shrimp cocktail). Those were the best part of the meal. I got the snapper special, blackened, which was also good but probably not worth the cost, which was just under $40. It came with choice of side, which was either pasta with butter/garlic or marinara, French fries or mashed sweet potatoes (was hoping for baked potato but not an option). I opted for pasta with marinara, and in hindsight probably should've ordered the fries (fish and pasta marinara don't really go together but I was trying to eat healthier). The pasta wasn't bad, just not amazing. One friend got the broiled seafood platter which she generally enjoyed, except the scallops were either overcooked or undercooked. Her husband, not a fish lover, ordered the chargrilled dolphin, which he said was "ok" (he had planned on ordering the ribeye--more on that in a minute). He liked the smashed potatoes with cheddar side dish. Back to the ribeye--the only steak entree on the menu. Two of us had planned to order it because another friend told us it was the best thing on the menu. However, we were told (after placing the order) that they were all out. This is Saturday night at 8 pm. The menu is not large to begin with, and is mostly seafood (as it should be), but I think you should either have more than 1 steak option on the menu or have enough of the one steak to cover the entire evening. Just my opinion. I guess the secret is to dine early if you want steak. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and I would recommend everyone try it once. It seems like the restaurant is more geared towards non-regulars looking to have a unique boat/island dining adventure. The buildings are nice inside and full of pictures from over the years. The section we sat in had nice ambience and the restaurant is much bigger than it looks. The bar is worth checking out too.

Yelp
A real Florida treasure! After a short boat ride to the tropical island, the rustic building and historic bar await you. The history surrounding this place is amazing! We had a short wait for dinner and the friendly bartender was happy to share a lot of interesting and informative tidbits about the place.(all while making an awesome cocktail!) Dinner was definitely a five star experience starting with heart of Palm salad and fresh fish prepared to perfection! Some places never need to change! Highly recommended!

Yelp
We absolutely loved the history and the food! The place is a dump and everything is old and not well maintained but it was an excellent experience. From the water taxi to the delicious crab cakes -we were very impressed. Our server was L.J. And she is very enthusiastic and proud of where she works. She was awesome!! Don't be surprised if they have a bad attitude. The original owners children still own it and work there and are pretty grumpy people. I can't wait to go back. The crab cakes rival the best that we have ever had and we have had hundreds over the years. The Hearts of Palm Salad is a big deal here and it's very good!

Yelp
Very fun experience. The place is a smorgasbord of history. From the story handed to me when I sat down to the plethora of framed newspaper clippings to the century old building, it all leads itself to a fascinating evening. The service was excellent. View from the bar serene. The food was very good comprised of fresh fish and seafood prepared any way you like complimented with potato and vegetables.

Yelp
We have lived in Florida now for 15 years and have always wanted to experience Cap's. Finally had the time to go....I took my husband for Father's Day (it was his Birthday as well). Was very surprised at the cleanliness of the restaurant, dirty t say the east. The hostess who sat us had on a dirty shirt and looked a mess. Our server was ok. We ordered Shrimp Cocktail (typical no surprise here) and Caprese Salad (very good). My husband ordered the crab cake dinner, crab cakes were of but 70% crab meat not 90% by any means, the string beans looked like they were from last week. I ordered the Crab Cake appetizer which was much smaller than the dinner crab cake and maybe 40% crab meat, I also ordered the house salad appetizer it was horrible did not even eat it. We ordered coffee after dinner and a slice of Key Lime Pie. The coffee came and the Key Lime Pie 15 minutes later and looked like it had been sitting in the heat for an hour. With tip for the two of us I had Ice Tea and my husband a glass of wine $200.00, CRAZY for thee meal and service. Needless to say we will not be going back to Cap's

Yelp
The worst hospitality, people are super rude starting from the boat raider to the restaurant, to our server. The food was okay, not recommend to loose your time, read the article about Cap and Lola , Minus 5 starts

Yelp
We went to Caps for the first time last weekend for my mothers birthday and had a wonderful time. We made reservations through their website and it was an easy process. The boat ride was fun and only a quick 3 minute ride. The waiter was super nice and even took photos of us. The food was on the pricey side but the quality and taste were great and made it worth it. I had the crab cakes with sweet potato mash and it was amazing. My husband had the seafood platter with scallops and they were cooked to perfection. The bread is super yummy as well! We loved it and will definitely be back.

Food was amazing and service was excellent. It was my first time but my friend is a local and steered me to this gem! The whole experience was wonderful and can't wait to go back

Yelp
We we enjoyed the experience in lighthouse point! We recommend giving them a try and keeping your expectations low. Service is great. The service overall leaves you wondering why you paid $75pp to have a subpar experience from a general ambiance and how the front and bar treat you. We had 6 of us for dinner. Arrive early to have a drink at the bar and the 5 minute boat ride. Tip the boat Captain. There are cats and you are not allowed to pet them. Lots of rules here. Posted everywhere. We went to the bar and she had us put the chairs and tables back. Interesting place. The history is worth the visit. The food is exceptional. Not fancy. Paper placemats. 1970's furnishing. Banita- wait staff is remarkable. Recommend at least once.

Yelp
An historic landmark . You must have reservations. We came with no expectations. It's an old house with a lot of character. You take a boat over to the restaurant which is amongst mansions and yachts on Lighthouse point. The boat is provided by the restaurant. It's a 5 minute ride. We were early so we went to the bar. It had a lot of character just like the red haired older lady tending bar, lol. She was a bit grumpy. The drinks were good though. 2 martinis, a beer and a coke were $40. So reasonably priced. As we were called to our dinner table, the character of the place continued. The menu is limited. We asked about the lobster that we saw on their website but we're told we had to call in advance to reserve a Main or a Florida lobster. That was a bummer. I opted for the crabcakes as my dinner entrée. Everyone had a shrimp cocktail except for me. The shrimp were huge and everyone was raving about how delicious they were, my husband had a steak and he said it was very flavorful perhaps a little overdone, but it was good. My friends snapper and a grilled seafood platter seafood platter look delicious and tasted even better than it looked. The fried fish was battered and then fried, so it is deceiving on the menu because it does not say it's battered, therefore, was not hit. My crabcakes were full of crab meat. I could only eat one all the entrées come with a mashed potato or mashed potato or steak fries or artichoke. I should've had the artichoke although the mashed potatoes were fine. There was also a vegetable mix of carrots, zucchini, and squash, the service was extremely slow. I also have to mention the pop over bread was delicious. We ended our meal with a Keylime pie. Each couple shared a slice. I thought it was good. It was very tart but the majority of my friends said it was too tart overall it was an interesting experience, I would say a one and done. I would not go out of my way to come here as there are other places that are a little more favorable.. But it was an experience.

Yelp
What a dump! I thought I would enjoy the vintage atmosphere and the charm of feeling like we were heading into on island for dinner...but I have to say from the rude person on the phone when I made the reservation almost two weeks in advance... to the rude boat captain that shuttled us across the waterway to the shack they call a restaurant...we ended up being 10 min early ....as we walked in and met the wretched hostess in an almost empty restaurant...she Rudely told us we were early and she'd have to make a table for us....even though they emailed me twice today to confirm the reservation...they knew we were coming...and the place as almost empty...she made us wait... outside....lol....it will certainly be my first and last time visiting Cap's Place... The menu is pretty lame...not many options and also VERY expensive...so not worth it...the charm and rustic building didn't make up for the bad food and rude employees...

Yelp
The service was outstanding are waitress Belinda was extremely pleasant. The food was delicious recommend the Crab Cakes. I love the opportunity to experience this historic restaurant. The only negative they did not have my wife's wine they ran out of it.

Yelp
Love this place! It was a wonderful experience and a bit different than traditional restaurants (atmosphere, setting, etc). My family and I were celebrating my hubby's birthday, and my oh my, it was intimately special. We arrived to an upscale neighborhood near residential boat docks and awaited the restaurants ferry boat to pick us up to get to the restaurant. The captain of the ferry boat was really nice, friendly, and funny. We arrived to the restaurant within 3-4 minutes. (The road that the restaurant is located on is not opened to the public. ) Moreover, we entered the restaurant building, adjacent from the bar which is across from the restaurant. The dining area was cozy and thankfully it wasn't crowded. The waiter was friendly and helpful with great suggestions from the menu. For appetizers we ordered escargot and the calamari platter which also included fried conch, squid, and shrimp. For our entree we had to get the stuffed lobster of course (amaaazing), a broiled fish and shrimp platter w/ veggies, and fries. We were stuffed, and the servings are definitely plentiful! My family and I will be returning soon. I definitely recommend this place because they have great food, and it's history is one to be a part of being one of the first restaurants opened in South Florida makes them one of the oldest restaurants.

Yelp
Cap's Place is old and weird. The staff is curmudgeonly. The restaurant is a 5-minute boat ride from Lighthouse Point. There are rules to abide by. At first glance, you would think that the restaurant would smell dingy. It did not. It reminded me of my sleepaway camp mess hall before they redid it. I went to a scheduled birthday dinner with six couples. I was treated to drinks and my meal, which was extra-special nice. The food was better than I had expected. I had a hearts of palm salad which, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, I'd give it an 8 for the actual hearts of palm and 5 for the mayo dressing. I wish it were dressed in a vinaigrette. That's my flavor-bud profile. I also had an appetizer-size crab cake. On my scale again, I'd give the crab cake a 10. I love crab cakes, and these were the type with zero binders, all big hunks of crab. Delicious, and kudos to the chef. I prefer more of a remoulade sauce rather than their spicy mayo dip, but still very good. Cocktails are generous. Bring a few bucks to tip the boat driver. Smile at the bartender and be prepared to give your drink order pronto. Patience is not on the menu here. Kinda their shtick. Just go with it, and you'll have fun.

Yelp
The fresh baked rolls were outstanding. The location and boat ride to get there were different. The food was expensive and nothing special.

Yelp
The experience starts with a short boat ride that takes u to Cap's (it runs frequently so don't worry). When you arrive u are transporting back to the days of rum runners and prohibition. The walls are lined with photos of the history and famous guest. The service was amazing! Melissa was attentive and so knowledgeable. My husband and I shared our meals because we couldn't decide from all the options. We got the crab cake dinner and scallop dinner, both with sweet potato mash. Probably the best crab cakes we've ever had and definitely the biggest scallops! It was such a fun evening!

Yelp
Remember the one about cats at a seafood restaurant? Let's not bury the lead. We arrived 20 minutes early for our 8:30 reso. We're told to wait. Fine. Go to the bar. Ask for a cocktail list. I am told "Honey this isn't that kind of bar. We serve adults here."  Full stop. Fact check. I am a 50 year old man. And if enquiring as to if they serve more than G&T here makes me a juvenile then so be it. PS. The choices of Gin were two. Being called a child by the bar tender might have been funny at Ed Debevic's in the 1980s. Actually it wasn't funny then either. Let's move on to the menu, service,  presentation, and value.  All well below average. Oh. And about the cats. There are signs from the management about all kinds of things. But most importantly: DONT FEED THE CATS. Ramshackle seafood shack from the prohibition era. Awesome. Just dont expect good food, service, or respect. Do expect to be watched by a pack of drooling feral cats.

Yelp
It's in a great location. It could be made into a great dining experience if it was managed professionally. Everyone recommended the crab cakes so that's what i ordered and they were really good. The building and the grounds were run down and the inside was dark and dingy. We experienced the bitchy bartender and crabby hostess but chose to ignore their surly attitude. I think the negative attitudes and shabby interior was intentional to add to the rum runner atmosphere. The waitress was sweet and very attentive. The owners need to stay home, count their money and hire people to run the place. (including a landscaper)

Yelp
This was a pretty cool experience, and would recommend it at least once. Food is nothin' to write home about, it's mediocre. But, we enjoyed the whole experience and the service made the whole night!

Yelp
Cap's Place. Just the mention of it with old timers will have them telling you about all the great times they've had here over the years. For me it's a Fort Lauderdale Institution that is that little bit of old Florida in the middle of a sprawling metropolis- perfect for my out of town friends when they come because of it's uniqueness. Part of its old school charm is that you have to take a small boat over to the island that the restaurant is on. There is a small parking lot where you pick up the boat but know you may have to park in the public lots that are nearby, but there is plenty of parking. Follow your GPS and the many signs as you will be convinced that you must be going the wrong way- but you aren't. When you get to the island it is a short walk to the restaurant. To be honest- the original building is leaning so much that I wondered if it was actually safe to go inside but once inside the charm is evident. The history here is that this was originally a casino and rum running outfit where they hitched some buildings together down in Miami and floated north on the intercoastal, planting them on this island. And here it has been for over 85 years. My tip for you if you go is to go early for your reservation and sit out on their patio watching the boats go by. We were running late for our reservation as one in our party had missed the boat and we didn't want to screw up the restaurant given it was during covid and they were limiting seating, but I would have loved to sit out there for awhile with a drink in my hand. Inside our server Robert was over in a flash, sharing his knowledge about the menu and the establishment. The drinks were well poured and the appetizers came up in a flash. The crab cake was my favorite but the caprese salad was quite good as well. For our entrees, we all had the snapper prepared a range of ways and all were very good. And of course- key lime pie for dessert. By this time it was dark and time for our journey back across the water to where we left our cars. But as we pulled away from the island and looked back, it felt for a minute like we were in a time warp that was ending- the old on one side and the new world ahead. Not many places left that give you that unique perspective. Thanks, Caps!

Yelp
Casual waterfront dining. Wait staff were amazing. Historic Appetizers were: crab cake and bacon wrapped scallops Garden salad- add on to entree Dinner: rib eye with French fries Broiled seafood platter with sweet mashed potato Crab cake entree Fried shrimp and French fries Pasta marinera Kids had chicken nuggets with French fries First off you have to park in a lot and take a launch boat over to the restaurant which was pretty cool, the kids really enjoyed it. From the second we walked in to the restaurant the wait staff were inviting and warm. The restaurant still looks as if we are in the 1920s. The waiters all took their time and shared the history of the restaurant with us and showed us around. Rob was our main waiter and really made our experience enjoyable. The food was ok, could def use a little more seasoning. The menu with a bit limited, not sure if they switch it up daily, weekly, monthly or seasonally but it def didn't match the menu we seen online prior to coming here. Would come back with visitors for the experience of visiting this historic place even though I didn't love the food, it was decent and a pleasant experience. Must see at least once if ur in the south florida area Reservations should be made for a party greater than 5 Lots of famous people have dined here (see the website)

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews and this is my only negative review. This review only pertains to the Caps older female bartender. We didn't get her name as her rudeness and lack of any personality made it unable to get her name or any service. We came to the bar to have a drink before dinner and check.out the cool history of the place. The bartender not only didn't want to serve us but made us all feel.very uncomfortable. The room and bar was half full and she stated she had no room and couldn't serve us. We said we.could stand in the corner but she wouldn't have it. She then called the management and spoke about us and down to us to whomever she had on the phone directly in front of our faces. I did all in my power to take the high road as she is an obvious miserable human being with zero social skills whatsoever. The last place she should be is the opening front person at a bar for what ended up to be a very nice dinner. As you can read on many of the reviews, our thoughts are held and captured by many customers. She must have some good blackmail pictures on someone from 60 years ago. Once we.left the bar, we sat at restaurant and enjoyed a wonderful night. Our waitress Melissa was spectacular and turned the night around. The food was fantastic and all in all great time. Hopefully the ownership can read enough of these to take action as she personally is ruining their business. As great as all was we will not return only because of this person.

Yelp
We were here last year and the food was wonderful, love the history and the old structure of the restaurant. The 5 min. boat ride great. We went there again this year and what a change, the boat ride was good, there was no bartender, we had to wait because she was helping at restaurant, by the time she got to us our name was called. The waiter spilled beer on our table instead of cleaning it up he used my placemat to soak up the beer and did not change the placemat, the food came out cold and overcooked. The portions were small for the money, the best was the fresh baked bread. Not sure if we will go back next year.

Yelp
HORRIBLE. I had high hopes when I read a few good reviews here- but my lack of faith in humanity was restored after we took some friends there last night. It's appalling what some people consider "good" First off, most reviews were spot on about the rude staff- from the boat "captain" to the hostess and then the cocky waiter who practically insulted my wife. Next- food quality. Save your coin and go to Flannigans if you want better seafood. I ordered the seafood platter- sounds like a lot, right? It came with a few shavings of fish, two 1 1/2 inch scallops, and four small shrimp- one of which had an "off" taste when I had eaten half. All way over cooked and over salted. Liquified sweet potatoes with extra sugar - gross- and some shredded overcooked mixed vegetables- maybe 1/2 cup. All for the joy of paying $38 for it- and 5 star prices on their well- quality wines by the glass- between $10-14. I wonder if the health inspector has been by? Bathrooms not even close to meeting code. All in, I was out $160 and felt like I had been shaken down. So much potential for a cute old place, ruined by greedy and uncaring owners. You've been warned.
