Tracking Boston’s Vietnamese-Cajun Seafood Boil Scene | Eater Boston

"Opening at 160 Brighton Ave. in Allston as the chain’s third location, Loui Loui serves classic Louisiana-style boiled seafood—mussels, clams, shrimp, lobster, crawfish, and several kinds of crab—alongside fried seafood options that come with Cajun fries, plus oysters and clams on the half-shell, clam chowder, and jambalaya; the brand also operates a Stoneham location and one in Fort Lee, NJ." - Eater Staff

Google
I really enjoyed Cap’t Loui. It was super fresh and the flavor was really delicious. The vibe was good and the food came out pretty quickly. Next time I will try the boil. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend Cap’t Loui for some fresh seafood!

Google
Wow this place had amazingly delicious food! At first we were a bit worried when we walked in because there wasn’t a single person there. We had the best service though because of this. 😁 We ordered a 4lb bag with 3lbs of snow crab legs and 1lb of headless shrimp 🍤 Inside the bag were potatoes and corn. The sauce we picked was a lemon butter and it was just perfect! Everything was steamed just right and the crab legs just snapped as it should! The garlic noodles were a miss so don’t bother with those. Fries were good but those are hard to mess up. Here are some pics of the awesomeness.

HANDS DOWN THE BEST SEAFOOD PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO 🦞 today was my frist time going to Capt Loui and it did not disappoint 🍤 Their cajun sauce is chef kiss. I am planning to go back again asap!!! It’s very delicious. If you hesitate about going here for the first time, GO! Lol 😂 I got clams and easy peel shrimp with a side order garlic noodles. My husband got snow crab and shrimp with corn and potatoes. 💯 recommend.

Google
Clam chowder was amazing. We were the first people in and ordered our lunch and a kids meal for our grandson. Our meals came out and was so so definitely frozen fish. Took a good 15 minutes before the kids meal came out, when you have kids that is definitely a no no.

Google
This was my first time here. Little bit of a wait but wasn’t too bad. It was well worth the wait. Staff was nice and prompt taking order and delivering food. They are very prompt at cleaning up tables getting them ready for the next customer. My boil was AMAZING!

Google
Came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday on a Thursday. The food was delicious! The lemon and pepper flavored combo left me wanting more & their cajun fries were addicting! The service was great. Carlos our waiter very kind and accommodating. Will definitely go back.

Is This A Joke?!? M.

Google
I went there for my birthday. I was waiting for my seafood boil more than an hour. It was sitting on top of the counter. No one came over to see how things were going, so my food just sat there, meanwhile other people at my table were already eating. The seafood was delicious but the service for me was horrible. My daughter said that maybe they were in the middle of a shift change. If they were in the middle of a shift change then they should remember what is left to be done at a table before they change shift. There were three waitresses eating and there was only one waitress running around, taking care of all the tables. Oh yeah, the left over had a human hair in it.

Google
Wonderful food and service! We thought the food was excellent, value was fair, alcoholic drinks were delicious. Great lively atmosphere as well. We all know seafood boil is messy, but they provide tons of cleaning supplies, gloves and bibs to help. Our waiter Sun was attentive, friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. My favorite seafood boil location and I’ll definitely be back.

Yelp
Was a fun experience. The Cap't Loui sauce was sweet with just enough heat for the mild option. Loved that they offered two different size gloves, hair ties, and even mouth wash in the bathroom. Casual ambience, filled with friend groups and families alike.

Yelp
Been awhile since we hit up the Stoneham location and honestly felt like the first time! Space was open and clean, servers were nice! Probably my favorite location! Everything came out super hot, and felt fresh. We did the combo 2# with a free side (miss the days of free garlic noodles unlimited haha) Got squid and shrimp this time around and was filled by the time we finished! We did the medium Cajun butter house sauce and it had a good kick, more than expected. Felt like plenty of protein, we added sausage as well which was definitely a good call! Also came on the right night for dollar oysters and smashed a dozen quick haha. Will be back when in the area!

Yelp
Tonight was the first time trying Cap't Loui in Stoneham! I have always heard amazing things about this location, I believe this is the original location in MA... and many people know it as "Loui Loui". Normally, I go to the one in Braintree as that one is closer, but this one definitely much better! Everything from the staff, cleanliness of the restaurant, and food quality, is unmatched compared to the one in the South Shore. I like that this one is well lit, tables are not at all sticky, and the spicy, is actually spicy. We ordered a 2 lb combo, with 1 lb shrimp w/ head on & 1 lb calamari & a side of garlic noodles. Along with that, since it happened to be Tuesdays, we got a dozen oysters! They do $1 oysters on Tuesdays! Oysters tasted fresh & the shrimp + calamari were great, as well. We had gotten the medium spicy Loui sauce & it a lot spicier than we thought it would be haha. It wasn't too spicy but you definitely will feel the heat. Parking: plenty of parking available here. It's located in a strip mall w/ lots of spots in the lots. Overall, highly recommend if you're looking for a spot w/ great seafood boil!

Yelp
Food was great, I know this is a seafood place but don't sleep on the chicken tenders and lemon pepper fries they're always incredible. Garlic noodles were good if you like Parmesan. Service was the main point of improvement, it took a very long time for our order to be taken, it took a while for our food to come out, our server was a little soft spoken and hard to hear, and my tenders came out without any sauces, but the food was good and the ambiance was casual.
google avatar

Kelly Z.

Yelp
Freshest seafood boil you can find in MA!!! Their seafood is always big and juicy and cooked perfectly. However, let me put you on to the funnel fries. If you never tried it you need to go get it NOWWW. Even if you're not into seafood just come here and get the funnel fries because it's the most delectable dessert you can get. I was so surprised at how good it was and now I never leave without it! Service is good and ambiance is casual.

Yelp
Great food and amazing service! We got 3lb total of clam, shrimp, and crawfish for two people, and it was filling. The sauce was flavorful and stuck onto the seafood well. We got medium which had a kick to it, honestly would get mild next time, because I had to drink a lot of water. The cajun fries was fried to perfection and seasoned well. Everything came out hot and quick! The adult capri sun was also delicious! I got the Mr. Rich and it had a good balance of alcohol and fruit flavors. Our server Jenny was very sweet and checked up on us many times. I also appreciated how they had a mini set up for hair ties, floss picks, and lotion. Would definitely come back again!
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
I food was incredible and the dining experience was top notch. All the seafood was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. We got medium spice and it had some kick but in a good way. The garlic bread was heaven to dunk in the sauce, I highly recommend getting an order. Overall 20 out of 10

Yelp
Been here couple of times since it's the only decent one. They renovate the restroom which is pretty nice. We came with party of 4 and we got seated right away. The Cajun fries and garlic noodles are the bomb! The catfish was a bit too soft The only thing I don't like is we didn't get all the sauce. Like the orange sauce which she only provide one with party of 4. our server Cindy said that she gave us a lot of sauce already. Yes but the thing is we didn't get the same sauce for all of us. So we ask for more. We know she's a bit annoyed but we don't wanna dip the sauce together and share saliva. If you know what I mean??? Anyway, my brother finished his soda and we want to order more, we have to wave for Cindy to get her attention. After a while we order again with a different server In the end she didn't ask how we are doing or anything. She came in one last time with the bill and again, no where to be found Overall the food was good but the service was kinda lacking especially this server. I wish she can be more attentive and pay more attention. It's early in the day too.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for seafood boil in the greater Boston Area. The service here is one to commend because of their kindness and quickness! The seafood was fresh, albeit a little pricy, and lots of variety. The combo sauce is the best to get with a side of their adult capri sun! We got the lychee soju one which was delicious. Will be coming back!

Yelp
BETTER BRING LOTS OF MONEY WITH YOU!!!!! It is kinda crappy that the menu has "Market Price" all over the menu, but the market price is virtually nowhere to be found anywhere posted except on small print in a very inconspicuous location. I was absolutely FLOORED when I saw that 1 pound of snow crab legs (not one pound of meat - that was shell and all) was $110.00!!! I would highly recommend skipping this place in favor of any number of fresh seafood establishments in Boston!

Dwayne M.

Yelp
I'm very disappointed in the food that I receive from this particular establishment. They didn't give me what I ordered my six piece was more of a four-piece and they gave me less than a handful of fries I would not recommend anybody get anything from this location. Tried to reach out by the phone number on the receipt the phone number cannot be completed as dialed this is what my plate look like The garlic noodles do not taste like garlic noodles at all The Braintree location is probably the best one I've ever been to by far. Whoever made this food needs to be fired. I'm not a happy customer

Yelp
Ever since I've first tried this spot, I've been in love and the hype surrounding them is well deserved. The servers are always so welcoming and joke around with you, and the vibes here are just so great. Seafood can get expensive but it's so worth it. When we come we always get the lemon pepper sauce. The Capt Loui sauce is just as good too but it's just something about the lemon pepper that just makes you want it every time. I usually get king crab and snow crab only, but decided to switch it up and add some calamari aka squid rings. I was expecting the squid to be tough, but it was actually pretty soft. Not too chewy at all. I always get mine extra hot too because I'm a spicy gal lol. It just hits so good. And the garlic noodles are always bussin, like I have to hold myself back from eating the whole thing before the boiler combo is served. And the corn!!! Ugh so sweet and juicy. And I tried their wing basket before too. You'd think it would be meh because they specialize in seafood boil. WRONG! Those chicken wings are so crispy and juicy you'd think you're at KFC or something. And their fries are so immaculate, better than McDonald's and Popeyes fries, especially the Cajun fries. Delish! Overall, this place is my absolute favorite!!! P.S. this place has satisfied all of my cravings pregnant or not, so it's GOOD.
google avatar

Dino M.

Yelp
VERY HIT OR MISS! BE CAUTIOUS! First time we came to this establishment, it was excellent! Food and service was great. However, I was just there and it was bad! A complete 180. We got 3 pounds of crawfish and a pound and a half were inedible. The meat was black, the texture was soft and looked moldy. Don't even get me started on the service! Terrible!
google avatar

My-Linh D.

Yelp
I've been coming to Captain Loui since the pandemic and it's my to go seafood in a bag place! The garlic noodles are great as an appetizer. The flavors are subtle but delicious. I do wish they would serve the garlic noodles closer to when the seafood would come out. This was my first time getting king crab and it was worth it for a one time thing! So much meat and flavor. They also have a station for hair ties, tide to go, and extra gloves with different sizes!

Tyler L.

Yelp
Very good flavored food and our waiter gave us free clam chowder since it was our first time at a sea food boil.
google avatar

Janet A.

Yelp
This place should reevaluate their seafood.. Crawfish and shrimp taste like rubber. Such TRASH! I asked for extra sauce and was willing to pay the extra $6 and it was mostly oil and butter.. Everybody needs to know there's a BOILING CRAB in Cambridge with the best service and freshest seafood.. Capt Loui sells old seafood and horribly overpriced.. I AM SO OFFENDED BY THIS RESTAURANT! DO BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop ripping people off!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
First time we dined in and it was a great experience. Service was quick and the ambiance was great. We found that the seafood was fresh, and the sauce was thick and flavorful. Second time we ordered take out and found the shrimp to be overcooked and sauce was just oil and butter. Their Cajun fries are great, but not giving a 5 based on recent experience. Will give it another shot soon.
google avatar

Byanca Y.

Yelp
I love love this place. Always get the pick three or four with the capt loui sauce extra spicy! Everything here is always fresh and same over and over again. The fries are flavorful and crispy. The garlic noodles are addicting! Their fried items are also good for non seafood lovers!
google avatar

Vianna N.

Yelp
This place went down hill since their little changes through out the restaurant. The seafood decreased tremendously, the frozen crawfish was $20 a lb for something that extremely small, salty, has a weird smell to it. The head on shrimp was also gross. Most of the shrimp heads was black and fell off from the body which indicated that is not fresh. Getting two stars because their garlic noodles, clam chowder, and wings basket are actually good. Not sure why they switched from self serve to full service when there's no service from the servers anyways. Used to be my Togo spot for seafood spoil but probably won't come back after this time.
google avatar

Bun C.

Yelp
Addictive. Enough said. Note: Don't order corn and potatoes as sides unless you want extra because they automatically come with the boil. The Loui sauce, even mild, might be too spicy for kids.
google avatar

Nikk S.

Yelp
I really love this restaurant. It is a fantastic place to get amazing seafood boil. The only downside is the price. The ambiance is what you would expect. They have tables with the paper covering ready to go for clean up. I ordered snow crab and they were out so I ordered king crab. I didn't realize it was $78 for a pound (no half pound available). So I ordered a pound boil for my order but said I wanted half shrimp, half crab. The waiter didn't tell me they don't do half pounds of crab, and they still charged me for a full pound of the crab with just a few legs. It's so expensive, every sliver is gold. What I thought would be a nice dinner date ended up being insanely expensive $200 dinner. Considering the fact you have to crack and peel the crab and shrimp, it should be lower cost. I was genuinely surprised by the expensive tab. Our waiter was wicked nice but he also only came to our table once to drop off the food. We never had the opportunity to order more drinks. I would also recommend maybe showing customers how to use the tools they drop off with the bagged food. They gave us a crab claw tool but I had no idea how to use it and just went for cutting open the claws with how I knew how to do so, but for inexperienced customers, I could definitely see it as a challenge. For such a high price of food, I would hope they show customers how to get the most out of scooping meat out of the crab claws. Service 3/5 for never coming back Food 5/5 Price 2/5 very high for what it was
google avatar

Yelp
The food quality at this location is very good but I came to the establishment yesterday to learn that the menu has completely changed and lunch menu is only available during lunch hours so today I decided to come during lunch hours and nobody's available during lunch hours Would be a good idea to add the lunch menu to a dinner menu Place always seems clean when I come
google avatar

Bao Tran N.

Yelp
The food is delicious but the service was not the best and they were super busy so it took a long time for our food to come. We got a 1.5lbs of shrimp and 1.5lbs of clam with the hot house sauce with a side of garlic noodles and extra corn--it was enough for 3 people to share. We also got the funnel cake fries with ice cream for dessert.

Denny C.

Yelp
They turn off there phone so you can't order out it's crazy to me that I had to drive there order my food and when ask they said there to busy
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Two of our friends are leaving Boston soon, so we chose this place as the bestest location to eat and catch up. Many other seafood broil restaurants have too thick of a sauce but this place was impeccable and the sauce pairs so well with butter noodles. Hands down the best part of the night was the $1 oysters, crawfish with the sweetest heads, and our beyond amazing server Sun. Sun is the hardest working, kindest, and fastest guy ever! We four all loved him so much!! He's truly so diligent and a welcoming team member for Cap't Loui!! Thank you again Sun!!
google avatar

Donald S.

Yelp
Mama always said if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. But sometimes the truth must be spoken....respectfully of course. Cajun cooking is some of the best cuisine around, but this simply isn't a good representation. Cajun food isn't something you easily run into in Massachusetts...or New England for that matter. Cap't Loui has created a nicely decorated, brightly lit Cajun themed space in the heart of Stoneham. Most come to get handsy with the crab, but I go for the fish and chips. This is where it all goes wrong. Wilted lukewarm fries with a Cajun dusting. 3 inconsistent pieces of fish, with hardly any crisp to the batter and even less flavor. This would be a disappointment at a fast food restaurant, but at this price point it's pretty insulting. In hindsight, the claim to fame at Cap't Loui is the crab.....and I'm sure it's enjoyable. My experience? Not so much.
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
yummy in my tummy!! very good service, shout-out to Jassion man of the hour best server and besides that they even had hair ties for us to use! i also have done the pickup service for here was also really fast, def would recommend! but this place does get busy so expect a slight wait and def go on Tuesdays for $1 oysters
google avatar

Daryl O.

Yelp
The service was superb from Jason and the hostess. The food came hot and fast. The batter on the chicken and shrimp was light and crispy with a hint of something sweet. The fries were thin and cooked just right. I personally enjoyed the lemon pepper more than the Cajun only because the latter had more bite than I care for. The clam chowder was excellent as well as the cup of coleslaw. We're visiting from Michigan so we may not be back soon but we WILL be back. I Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
The seafood is soo good once again! They didn't have live crawfish as it's only served 3 months out of the year. The restaurant is half full on a Monday night and the service is fast. They play popping music like K-pop, and popular hits.

Donald B.

Yelp
The Cap't Loui sauce was excellent! Service was great. Extremely busy for a Thursday night.

Jen J.

Yelp
they never send Captn loui sauce with your delivery!!!!!!!! It's not an option to add when ordering online delivery and I even write that I am willing to be up charged they don't send it. don't care how good this place is... order accuracy is imperative. I even called and asked to check to see if it was in the bag and the young man said yes it is. The hot and medium are in the bag he said. So I left them a tip and the driver. I paid $41.61 for an order that would have cost Me $4 to make at home. And would have just spent $26 If I came all the way there I would have at least been offered sauce with my boiled eggs. SO disappointing
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
This was my first time having cajun boil! We arrived around 9pm and the restaurent still relatively full. My boyfriend and I ordered the Boiler Combo (3+1) with shrimp (heads on), crawfish, clams, and mussels and a side of garlic noodles. Before our order came, we were given bibs, forks, and containers. When the bag came, it was steaming hot and everything was soaked in the medium Cap't Loui sauce. It also came with potatoes and corn as well. My favorites were the shrimp and mussels. Would definitely come back again.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Got the mild and hot spice levels at our table. Mild was still super flavorful! Sides are also pretty good. Wish they had more potatoes that comes with the bag but still very satisfied. Eating gets a little messy but they provide bibs and gloves at the table. Plus they have other useful items like hair tie and sanitary supplies.

Sean O.

Yelp
Average tasting crab boil with sides but the quantity and price tag was very high. We were over charged and appeared like it was an issues to resolve.
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Huge fan of the seafood boil. The spice is legit and I enjoy the medium - great way to balance still being able to enjoy the seafood. The garlic noodles are my favorite! You can't go wrong with any of their options, but my usual is head on shrimp and fresh crawfish. Do NOT wear white. Plenty of parking and the service is helpful.
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
Was looking for a good boil, it's been a while. I grabbed the snow crab boil with potatoes and corn with medium heat of the capt loui sauce. Medium had some serious kick but it not much flavor. Overall I was disappointed. Maybe I will try them again but a different sauce. The prices are reasonable. The inside looked clean and this bar inside is intriguing *wink wink*
google avatar

CiaoChow J.

Yelp
I'm a seafood fanatic & started with their clam chowder & it's served very hot & taste is delish! Looking forward to my Cajun crab legs, crawfish & Sapporo Japanese beer ! Ciao for now! Love visiting Boston area! Very welcoming, servers name was Sun, pleasant service.
google avatar

Pete D.

Yelp
The fried shrimp plate was fine, nothing terribly special and not as good as the local mom and pop shop who serves a similar dish. I had high hopes for this place from some of the reviews and while the food was not bad, it didn't meet the high expectations I got from some of the other reviews.

Kanha L.

Yelp
Does anyone know if the Stoneham location open? I have tried calling since last week and no one answered the phone.
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
Cap't Loui's never disappoints! We got the king grab, shrimp, and clams with the OG sauce which was super yummy! Also the sausage addon is the best cause you get tons of sausage, its like it never ends! The garlic noodles is also a must while you eat the boiler! The staff is super nice and helpful and the music is a bop. Highly recommend
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
***BEWARE*** cockroach!!! My girlfriend and I go here pretty often and are always usually very satisfied. We love the seafood and the drinks! Went for a late night dinner last night and we were well into our dishes, I look to my right to grab a napkin and there was a HUGE cockroach on the wall then proceeds to the napkin dispenser!! Disgusting. I tried squatting it and it almost jumped into my food! We completely lost our appetites. We told the waitress & showed her the roach and she told the manager who came to the table and apologized for everything. We were not charged for any of the food or drinks. I really hope he takes the right steps to making this restaurant a safer place to eat because that's a very big health risk. We will not be returning as there was another cockroach review prior.
google avatar

Yousef A.

Yelp
I explicitly have to say this is not a joke this over expectation to me. Whenever I go to any branch of this restaurant it's the same no mistake. Congratulations for the great recipes and great food as well as the atmosphere. I always order the four items in the bucket and get one freee yaay.!! I suppose to get a special treatment for coming to this restaurant.
google avatar

Sandy I.

Yelp
The food was amazing and extremely fresh!! Everything came out fairly quickly. Our server Cristian was very accommodating!

Yelp
Happy this time they had green mussels. Last time they were smaller/black mussels. Teens love the crab legs too.

Yelp
Such a great experience at Capt Louie!! The food is delicious and the service even better. Love the adult caprisuns!

Yelp
UPDATE: MY BOYFRIEND GOT REALLY BAD FOOD POISONING!!! STAY AWAY!!! Shrimp. Mussels. Clams. Oh my!! Came here for a late lunch with my boyfriend. It was our first time trying a seafood boil and I was super excited. We decided on this location vs Braintree because they offered a lunch special. I wanted to try it out before committing to the heafty prices of the regular boil options. We were sat, given waters and got to order right away! There are 2 options for the lunch special. Either: 1.) a seafood boil of 2 options (shrimp head on/off, clams, mussels, crawfish) , choose your sauce cap't loui or lemon garlic, choose a spice level, choose 1 side (corn&potatoes, noodles in bag, garlic noodles) served with a choice of soda 2.) fried seafood basket of 1 option (calamari, shrimp, fish, chicken wings or tenders), choice of soup (clam chowder or jambalaya) served with fries and a soda. After speaking with the server, I was informed that the seafood option yielded 1 lb total, 1/2 of each option seafood. I was convinced 1 bag wouldn't be enough food for the 2 of us so we got 2 seafood boil bags and 1 fried seafood basket. I chose shrimp head on & mussels in the x-spicy Cap't loui sauce with garlic noodles and an iced tea. My boyfriend got mussels & clams in the x-spicy Cap't Loui sauce, corn & potatoes and an iced tea. We also got 1 fried calamari basket with Cajun fries and clam chowder. Both of our seafood boils were delicious! I love spice and it was just the right amount to still be enjoyable. My boyfriend was breaking a sweat though! The sauce had so much garlic in it and was abundant. Yum! It was sooo messy though. Also they gave us so many garlic noodles, we couldn't finish it. We definitely didn't need the extra fry basket as the lunch special was the right amount of food for me. However, the clam chowder was absolutely delicious. I'm not sure if it's made fresh, but honestly I don't care lol the texture and taste were spot on. I would get the clam chowder by itself next time. Overall, I was very happy with the food and experience. The waitresses and waiters were all very nice and accommodating. I'm not sure this is the type of food that I'd crave enough to bring me back, but it was a fun and delicious experience. I'd love to try their crab next time. Not sure I could eat more than 1lb, maybe 2lbs. I'd definitely share a bag. Great job!

Tammy T.

Yelp
Food is full of spice and flavor. Staff is so friendly and accommodating. Wish I lived closer to have more often.

Yelp
Looooove love LOVE Cap't Loui! I tried Loui Loui ~2 years ago when they still had a Lowell location and before the chain officially became Cap't Loui. Back then I thought it was pretty good...not sure if the name change also brought a change in flavors but the food is SO much better now than I remembered. I am no stranger to cajun seafood boils because where I'm originally from we have the infamous The Boiling Crab, however, Cap't Loui is so much more bomb. They pretty much had me at UNLIMITED GARLIC NOODLES!! Ermahgerrrrd. I love pasta and I love garlic. Bring it on. We got the Boiler Combo with shrimp head on and mussels which gave us a free side...of ENDLESS. GARLIC. NOODLES. We got the signature Cap't Loui sauce medium spicy. I usually eat super spicy because I have a really high tolerance and would normally order extra hot, however, the boyfriend doesn't handle spice well so we compromised and got medium. The medium was AMAAAAZIngggg. The flavors were on point and I still felt the slight kick. Instead of dipping my seafood into the sauce I was basically drowning them into the sauce because it was so delicious. We also ordered the calamari basket with lemon pepper fries which was decent. Cap't Loui does get pretty expensive...but it's so so good.

Yelp
Excellent seafood boil and LOVE the adult Capri suns. Just be aware even the mild sauce is SPICY!!!! Next time I will get lemon pepper
