The 9 Best Bars In Key West

"After you’re done at Sloppy Joe’s, walk across the street to Captain Tony’s if you love a historic bar with a juicy backstory. This was actually the original Sloppy Joe’s, but legend has it that after a landlord dispute, the bar and its regulars packed everything up in the middle of the night and walked it across the street to the new Sloppy Joe’s. (Hemingway apparently thought this was hilarious). Captain Tony’s isn’t as energetic as Sloppy Joe’s, but it’s one of those old dark bars wallpapered in wrinkly dollar bills that feels so uniquely Key West. Ask the bartender about the building’s history as the city morgue if you’re feeling brave. " - ryan pfeffer

The Best of Weird Florida

"Most trips to Key West involve a visit to its most famous bar on Duval Street, Sloppy Joe’s, but for those who would like a little literary history and a whole bunch of morbidity with their cocktail, the “Sloppy Joe’s” where Ernest Hemingway used to sit and drink is right around the corner on Greene Street, now known as Captain Tony’s Saloon. Josie Russell opened Sloppy Joe’s on Greene Street in the 1930s, and in 1938 when the rent was raised by a dollar a week, the bar moved to its more famous location on Duval. The building that was once Hemingway’s watering hole went through several incarnations before finally being purchased by Captain Tony Tarracino and Captain Tony’s saloon was born. The building itself has a long and macabre history, stretching back to the early nineteenth century. Visitors will notice that inside the bar is a large tree- this was the gallows tree in the open courtyard that was used for judgements, and the building was later built around it.  At least 75 people were hung here for piracy, along with other transgressors. Ironically, the tree itself is still alive; it extends through the roof, though Hurricane Irma took much of the top, at least six inches of tree still peek above the building. Curiously, it still sprouts twigs and leaves inside the dusky bar. In its storied past, the building saw time as a morgue, a bordello, a telegraph office, a speakeasy and a cigar factory. During refurbishing work in the 1980s, the floor boards were taken up to reveal the bones of between 15-18 people. Among them, a gravestone for a young woman named Elvira Drew was discovered. Elvira was married, in her mid-teens, to an abusive, alcoholic man in his fifties. Elvira left the world in 1822 at the tender age of 19, hanged on winter solstice nearly two hundred years ago for killing her husband- self-defense wasn’t a valid argument at the time. Her tomb marker now sits beside the pool table for eternity, or at least until the bar undergoes another renovation. Another gravestone in the bar underneath the old hanging tree belongs to Reba I. Sawyer, a Key West native who lived from 1900 to 1950. Upon her death, her husband found scandalous letters between his wife and another man. The letters detailed their trysts, and how they would arrange to meet at Captain Tony’s Saloon. The widowed husband dragged his cheating partner’s tombstone from the cemetery into the bar, placed it under the tree, and supposedly said “this is where she wanted to be, so this is where she will stay”. There are far more bodies under the floor than there are gravestones- some graves are flush with the current floor level, and some rest beneath it. So wherever you step, you’re walking on someone’s grave. And before you leave, make sure to say goodbye to the resident skeleton, now propped up and fashionably dressed inside the bar." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Came in for the live music and we absolutely enjoyed the music! We did not order any food and had a few drinks. Our bartender was extremely attentive and friendly. The vibe was chill and we highly recommend this spot. You won't be disappointed!

As we continued our early evening key west bar crawl we arrived at Captain Tony’s Saloon, maybe a little earlier than others would like. But it was perfect. Awesome drinks fun crowds and an awesome chance to try to get our coins into the grouper above the Captain Tony’s Saloon sign! Fun fun fun stop in key west.

Google
Old Key West at its finest. Quirky and quaint, being one of the oldest bars in Key West with dollar bills on every surface. Standing out front, trying to get quarters in the mouth of the fish, on the sign! my friend did it!!!! 😁

Google
I walked into Captain Tony’s Saloon for the first time and instantly felt the energy of old Key West: vintage photos and memorabilia crowd the walls, bras hang from the ceiling, and live music fills the air. The bartenders were friendly, and the stories of Hemingway’s era seemed to come alive all around me. It’s an unforgettable spot that perfectly captures the laid-back, free-spirited charm of this island—and I can’t wait to go back.

Google
Great times always at Captain Tony’s! Cameron is a great bartender and super friendly. Gave us lots of cool locals recs for where to go! The pirate punch is great not too sweet a nice refreshing punch. Smells like smoke but it adds to the dive bar appeal. Awesome historic and great live music! Bring a dollar with your name it for the dollar bill bar!

🍹 Captain Tony’s Saloon: A Hemingway Fan’s Hidden Gem If you're tracing the footsteps of Hemingway in Key West, it’s easy to be drawn to the current Sloppy Joe's bar on Duval Street—but the real magic lies just a short stroll away at Captain Tony’s Saloon, the original location of Sloppy Joe’s where Hemingway himself used to drink. Walking through the doors feels like slipping back into a grittier, wilder version of old Key West. The walls are drenched in history (and business cards), the ceiling’s decorated with bras and dollar bills, and live music floats through the dimly lit saloon like a siren song from a bygone era. It’s chaotic, quirky, and full of stories. The drinks are great, the locals are colorful, and if you’re lucky, you'll catch a storyteller spinning tales that blur the line between myth and memory. Whether you're sipping a rum punch or a cold beer, you're not just having a drink—you're having an experience. So yes, stop by Sloppy Joe’s, but don’t leave Key West without raising a glass at Captain Tony’s. It’s not just a bar—it’s a slice of literary and tropical legend.

Google
Classic dive bar that seems its using its storied history to drive people in. We were in a little before 11, just wanting to get a t-shirt as a souvenir since we are Parrotheads. The person behind the shirt counter was rather rude and cold, and we almost considered leaving rather than giving her our business. It's a shame how a historic KW bar is being run. We had a much better time next door at Sloppy Joe's or down the road at Rams Head.

Packy Regan

Google
Captain Tony's is the original Sloppy Joe's. Longer history and has kept its original personality as a saloon with music. It has cold beer, smells like cigarettes and has loud music. It is not a place to bring kids. Ask about the $1 bills and the bras!

Yelp
I wish there were more bars: - Built around old gallows trees - In buildings that used to be morgues - That have human skeletons as mascots - Which feature real shrunken heads on display - Serving mystery grog in souvenir cups - With barstools dedicated to legendary musicians 13/10. Just go. My macabre heart is so happy.

Yelp
This place is a key west institution. Full of history and good times! There's pool tables, skee ball, and live music. Drinks were strong but delicious.
google avatar

Gary L.

Yelp
Great place for the typical dive bar. Cold beer and friendly service. Lots of folks in here. Always room it seem
google avatar

Craig W.

Yelp
Dark, laidback, and friendly. The Pirate's Punch is some kind of nuclear yellow, fruity drink (not a slushy) that goes down very easily. They've got an excellent gift shop inside the bar that really can't be beat. Don't forget to try and get a quarter into the fish's mouth high above and outside the entrance. It's extremely difficult but I saw it done. One of the better bars anywhere.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Great place to hang out, shoot the shit with a game of pool and get obliterated all day long.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
It's hard to be a parrothead, and come to Key West and not go to Captain Tony's, given all the songs and references Jimmy Buffett made to Tony and his bar. I'd say the bar definitely has a kind of funky vibe, but it's ok. Dark and smoky, for sure. Place was pretty busy for being an afternoon. But was able to get served at end of the bar and had a beer. All in all it was cool to see the memorabilia there. Just bear in mind if you don't like cigarette/cigar smoke, you'll probably not stay long.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
My favorite bar in keywest. This place has an interesting history. Its one of the oldest bars in keywest and their is a live tree in the middle of the place. Supposedly the tree was used to hang people many years ago. Also people were buried under the floor inside this place. They always have a great musician playing music here. One of the best things is that this place is air conditioned! When you walk in right next to the bar is an AC vent i like to stand under. And its got a perfect view of the live music right under the vent. Drinks are stiff here but they arent the cheapest. Capt tonysbis the quintessential keywest bar! Its a must see when youre in town
google avatar

Debi R.

Yelp
I went down to Captain Tony's to get out of the heat. IYKYK. We love dive bars and Jimmy. Sail on sailor.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Oldest bar. For some that makes it worth a visit. They also do have supercheap domestic beers. The one thing that I've noticed in Key West is that you will pay anywhere from eight to $12 for a single beer. They have several domestics for five dollars a can which is nice. I think for nostalgia it is cool, because there are thousands and thousands of dollar bills taped all over the walls and bras hanging from the ceiling. I wasn't in love with it. The restroom was absolutely disgusting and not cared for or being kept clean. So don't think you're going to use the facilities when you're here. Also, they allow smoking inside so you're sitting there trying to drink the beer that you just bought and someone is smoking next to you and I'm just too old for that at this point in my life. Also it's very dark and the floor is uneven so watch where you're stepping because I do think that it's a fall hazard.
google avatar

Dave O.

Yelp
I've been to a number of Saloons in Florida that claim to be the oldest, I doubt if anyone can say with certainty who truly owns the bragging rights. I've been to Captain Tony's a number of time and it consistently rates as one of the dirtiest, my drink of choice here comes in a bottle or can. Everyone should experience this place once, its age alone makes it nostalgic and no one is going to challenge the fact that it's definitely a Key West Landmark. I love dive bars but this one is not a place I want to hang out in for hours or visit the men's room. A lot of the bars in town offer exceptional people watching opportunities being they're open to the street and the tourists traffic, all the seats here are good because the show is on the inside people tend to let their hair down and get a little uninhibited. It's likely one of the stories you repeat often after returning home from the Keys will include this place if you stay in here long enough at the very least it's a photo op...
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Local dive bar good drinks and if your a jimmy buffet fan is a must stop and have at least one drink. Not a place I would just sit and drink in but fun to be in for awhile until you move to the next place. Good drinks cool old key west vibe
google avatar

Undercova A.

Yelp
Come here for the history and stay for the Amber ale. The bar was once called Sloppy Joe's, but when the rent went up by a dollar, Sloppy Joe's moved across the street, or so the story goes. The Amber ale is reason enough to make this a destination and the service is head and shoulders above what we encountered across the street. Comments that the place is dirty, gross etc., miss the whole point of what this place is about. Sit down and imagine why someone like Hemingway would have loved to come here, hang out and throw back a few.
google avatar

Kellie F.

Yelp
Service was great friendly and quick! Ambiance was fun and very much an iconic place to visit.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
A must place to visit in Key West even if you're not a drunk. We purchased many items from the Bar store for gifts prior to having a drink. Great service. Will return.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
The city may not be defined by Captain Tony's but st minimum this is where all makers of the future of Key West would meet for a beer to discuss their plans. No trip to the island is complete with a stop in this king of dive bars. Tony is able to keep his beer prices low but lightning the entire facility with only a single tea light candle. Several of those beers are on tap. They also have bottles and cans, but what they don't have is any BS. If you are looking for a comfortable spot to grab a pint and run the billiards table with the boys then this is your spot. If the table isn't as sticky as the floor then it ain't Tony's and it's that type of laid back vibe that makes this place great. Day or night a beer at Tony's is always right.
google avatar

Sexy T.

Yelp
This is a pilgrimage destination! For those of us who love finding local bars with great stories, this is the place. Initially went there to honor Coach Mike Leach (RIP) but found a place with a fantastic story and lots of history. Oh yea, the beer was cold and always full. Cheers!

John B.

Yelp
I hate to give this review but I have to. I have been coming to Capt. Tony's for several years. For the last 5 years the bartenders have been absolute jerks. They are lazy, rude and arrogant. Service is terrible but they expect 20% on every order. I love the history of the place but employees are terrible!
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Bar was dark and dirty. My wife and I walked in sat at a table and waited. No one spoke to us at all. We left after 10 minutes. Customers were smoking inside. Not a warm and fuzzy feel.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
The drinks and vibes are great! They have awesome merch too. If you go, make sure you're down to dance. It's hard not to though
google avatar

Patti C.

Yelp
If you like the history of the Keys, , this place is a must. Lots of dollar bills hang around bar. But besides that it is dark and dirty. Bathrooms were pretty gross. . Bar very sticky and hardly a crowd anytime we went in. The captain tony punch gives a souvenir glass (plastic) but was hard to swallow. Tasted a little like cleaner rather than a tropical fruity punch. They have bands.

Jeff A.

Yelp
Only had a few beers here for a birthday celebration. Bartender was friendly but I felted the bar was dark and dirty. Live music was very good as well.
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Talk to the employees and enjoy the history. Great music too. I am so glad we made this a priority stop on our stop in Key West.
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
We stopped here for a quick drink as it was recommended to us by a family member. We are not Buffett fans but when in rome... While we were here during the day, I bet this place is fun after 5p or so. There was a guitarist playing acoustic and the interior was dark, dingy and divey - my 3 fav D words to describe a bar! I tried their signature drink the Pirates Punch and if you like sweet drinks, this is for you!! As can also get their cup but can have it filled with Beer instead of their sig drink. Parking is limited and if you come down, stop by Sloppy Joes as well as I've heard that's a good time as well!!
google avatar

Evan S.

Yelp
Definitely a Dive bar. Like most of Key West, dirty and grungy. Music too loud for small inside area with an unlevel floor.
google avatar

James N.

Yelp
This is, without question, the GREATEST dive bar in America. I host a travel vlog so I have seen plenty but nothing touches Captain Tony's. The history alone sets it above the rest. He was a legend. A LEGEND! And this is where Jimmy Buffet got his start. I have spent hours in here and I am always looking forward to my next visit. There's only one Captain Tony's. Please please please do yourself the favor of stopping in for one or three.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Pro: Dark, cool bar in heart of Key West with a pretty interesting history, quirkiness, local music, etc. Cons: Drink prices a little in the high side in my opinion. Make sure you attempt to flip a quarter in the fish's mouth above the sign!
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
Oldest bar in Florida. Great, vintage, nautical decor, dark and dungeonwith chains and bottles in brickwork. Their special drink was really good. I'd definitely go back
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
The greatest dive bar in America. Yes it's usually crowded, yes it's dark, yes there's a tree growing inside the bar, yes it can be loud, and yea it used to be the city morgue, but it is a must when you visit key west. So much history in this one small bar. The service has always been top notch and the people watching is great. A good mix of locals and tourists. Also after a few drinks try and throw a quarter into the fishes mouth outside on the sign for good luck.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Fun, fun, fun! It's not fancy , y'all . It's a dirty dive bar but you must go, and when you go, you will have a BLAST! You will see all kinds of folks filtering through from college kids , wealthy looking couples to ghost tours and local Conchs! This place is old and all about the details . They say it's the oldest building in Key West. Don't miss the Hanging Tree inside the bar . Don't miss the headstone of Reba Sawyer that rests below the hanging tree or Elvira's headstone that's located in the pool room . Before you get too buzzed take a moment to glance at the newspaper articles about Captain Tony that hang in the pool room. Captain Tony's life is legendary ! Notice the barstools that famous people have sat on that hang from the ceiling . Let it soak in that Jimmy Buffet got his start playing in Captain Tony's. Then later listen to Buffet's "Last Mango in Paris" as he sings about Captain T in the first line! Don't forget to step outside the building and notice the large Jewfish that Captain Tony caught and had preserved. It is said that if you throw a quarter into the mouth of the fish, good luck will follow you until you leave the island. It only took me two tries to get it in! It is fun entertainment just to sit back and watch folks at different levels of inebriation try to get a quarter in its mouth ! Whatever you do, don't miss Captain Tony's!
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
It's a landmark.... Cation Tony is the most famous person on the island( besides being mayor and for a guy named Ernest) Pictures are everywhere along with the signed $ bills by all the customers... a must stop just to see the history and nostalgia..

William R.

Yelp
Even when they're not busy bartenders may overlook you if you're not gay. Plus, really bad live music there.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
Loved this place! Always great music, affordable drinks and friendly staff. Good food too. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kyle H.

Yelp
My husband loved the money on the roof. I always enjoy playing the old-style bar games. A great place to hang out at night.
google avatar

Tracie f.

Yelp
Typical dive bar, we had drinks, played pool, live music, interesting history, bought the shirt, fun.

Nicholas E.

Yelp
Best bar in Key West, extremely friendly crew and a place that is truly a piece of Florida history. Found myself in here just about every night while in KW. Thank you for an incredible experience!

Joe P.

Yelp
Grumpy bartender. The place is infested with ravenous fleas! We were already leaving, but the bugs drove us out even faster. Did not even finish our drinks. Literally had to go to CVS and get Benadryl.

Yelp
Great service and reasonably price drinks! Always a must visit when in Key West! Conveniently located near all the action.

Yelp
We visited this place on a haunted walking tour. I'm not sure it's haunted, but they do enough to trick you into thinking it is. There's a gravestone in the floor in one room, an actual human skeleton behind the bar, and a former hanging tree in the center of the main room. It's a dive bar. And as such, certain levels of gurv are expected. Nice bartenders. Great merchandise area. Bathrooms are tiny, narrow, and crowded. It's fun to sit and people watch. The musician was a treat, especially when he played Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and all the mid-westerners around the bar let out a mighty roar.

Yelp
Can you say hole in the wall? Great, then you just described Captain Tony's Saloon in Key West, Florida. But don't let that stop you from coming in if/when you visit. Captain Tony's has a chill vibe with plenty of eclectic style that fits perfectly with the Key West scene. Take it from me who's been here about four times (not sure I got all my check-ins) in the last four years. Two Key West trips and the place hasn't changed. That's totally okay because if it did then you'd miss out on the dollar bills and bras hanging from the ceiling, the signs and news articles along the walls that talk of Captain Tony himself, and the low lighting throughout the inside that fits the place (though probably is needed with just how grungy things are). But again, the grunginess works. And hey, you might just notice some stuff you didn't realize the first time you were there. The pool tables are front (well, side) and center, but you might miss the other little gaming area complete with a foosball table and a skeeball game. If you're lucky, the nicely-sized window will be open right by the pool tables to take a gander out on the street. Why would you want to look, you ask? Well, people will do their best to throw a quarter, backwards, into the statued fish that hangs above the entrance to CTS. It apparently once brought a free pint to those that complete this feat, but alas, no longer. Speaking of pints, Tony has his own amber ale (and souvenir cup) that'll barely run you up the price of one craft beer. It's nothing necessarily special and is a pretty basic, sorta malty, brew, but cool nonetheless. What's also cool (or not so cool) is just how much history is found in these walls. Truman Capote was here? Nice. That's pretty interesting, but I say it's not the coolest because you might be in the middle of a game of billiards when in marches a tour group that'll annoyingly stand around to look at one of these aforementioned historic items. Do yourself a favor and don't be in that tour group. Just come by on your own time and check the place out. Overall, Captain Tony's (or the original Sloppy Joe's as per their sign) is a great place to check out and return to, maybe even as a starting point for each night you're in Key West (like us). It's got just about everything you'd want from a dive bar with a few extra pieces rolled in. So if you find yourself in the Southernmost Key, give it a chance. Some holes-in-walls are definitely worth a visit (or several).

Yelp
Try to throw a coin backwards into the fish's mouth. You'll know what I mean when you get there. You don't get anything if you make it (except good luck, supposedly). Fun bar with a side room with billards/foosball. Live music. Slushy drinks (that are STRONG). Dollar bills and bras everywhere. Definitely a good pitstop for your debaucherous Duval street crawl.

Yelp
Seemed ok at first. Atmosphere was for smokers , I am not , and pretty sure it's a non smoking place. Never actually got served at bar so we left.

Yelp
We pop in every visit to Bone Island(Key West) Wife gets the pirate punch and I do Captain Tony's amber beer. Souvenir cups for both that are fun to drink water in after your trip home. Very dark inside. Lots of interesting pics of Capt Tony and Jimmy Buffet on the walls. Tree in the bar runs out thru the roof. Usually has live music, on our visit there was a woman guitarist with a great little bit raspy voice, she was very good. Dollar bills and bras tacked to the rafters and ceilings. From my inspection, a lot of well endowed women left their bras there. Yahoo! Gift shop for t's and other apparel near the door. This was the original Sloppy Joe's back in the Hemingway days of yore.

Yelp
Almost above and under ground at the same time it's like a if Florida style pool hall had a baby with a pirate ship and gave birth to a bar. Love the rum punches, and even got a couple cups to go as a souvenir. Would recommend to stop and shoot a couple 8 balls if you're on a bachelor party.

Yelp
This is a must stop if you're in key west for your first time. It has a lot of history with plenty of ghost story's and there is a real skeleton manning the bar 24-7-365. The drinks were fast and good, even with how busy it was. It's a divy feel with all the bras on the ceiling and makes for a lot of fun. Do not leave key west without stopping in.

Yelp
Heard this was a must see in the Keys. Went in, sat at a little dingy table and then moved up to two seats at the bar. Place very dark and dreary. After about 10 minutes and neither one of the two bartenders ever acknowledged us, we left and went to Sloppy Joes and sat at a bar and had a couple of beers and extremely nice service by two bartenders

Yelp
Great music and cold beer. The bar tenders kept Capt Tony's Amber flowing. Great JB tunes and chill Key West vibes. No food.

Yelp
T-shirt souvenir review: Came here twice. During our stay. It's a cool place. Obviously a place with a lot of history. We only had one round both visits. I also bought a shirt my last night there so I could add to my collection. Out of all the bars and restaurants I bought shirts from, this one fits and feels the best. They use a good material.

Yelp
Best old bar in the keys. Been drinking in this bar for 40 years and remember Capt. Tony well!
