Happy Hour for the win. I read that Captain Jim's has dollar oysters during their happy hour from 4-7pm on weekdays, so I finally got to stop by. The first thing you see when you walk in is a glass case full of fish on ice, so you know they're serious about fresh seafood. I liked seeing on the menu that you can pick your fish and have them cook it the way you want!
They give a nice sample cup of imitation crab salad with saltines as a complimentary starter. The staff member came over with a menu, then water immediately, and the server came over soon afterwards. She was motherly lol and attentive, checking a couple times even when I saw her serving at least a few other tables.
House wine is $5 and bottled beer (like Budweiser and Miller Lite) is $3 during happy hour. I had a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp and the perfect seafood accompaniment. I had a glass of the Pinot Grigio after that which was stronger in flavor.
I ordered a half dozen oysters and the server said, "You know, you can order by the oyster. Some people want a dozen, some people want 30 oysters, it's however many you want." So I went with 8 oysters, then tacked on another 4 later because they were so fresh and delightful to slurp down.
By the way, the dollar oysters are now $1.25 each, but they're still a great deal.
I ordered the Lobster Mac and Cheese Balls ($9) (I know) which came out soon after the oysters. The server advised that the balls were best when eaten hot, so she placed them right in front of me. She was, of course, correct. The gooey mac and cheese and the crispy breading made me forget that there is hardly any semblance of lobster meat in there, and it was all good.
I also got the Fried Calamari ($9) which was a generous plate of lightly breaded calamari rings with occasional tentacles. They, like the mac and cheese balls, were not seasoned too much, so I ended up using all of the marinara in the little cup that came on the dish. The marinara was a little sweet, but not in the came out of a jar kind of additive sweet. I would suggest you add hot sauce or red pepper when eating this marinara.
The restaurant has a relaxing, casual atmosphere, appropriate for adult dinners and family meals. When she was saying goodbye to me, the server said, "It was your first time here? See you back here next week!" It's tempting to make this a weekly visiting spot!
