Captain K was oooookkkkkkk.....
Since making waves on facebook, the one, the only Captain K seafood tower has finally reached our shores!
There were 5 of us and being seafood lovers, we decided to go for the 7 tier, recommended for 6 pax.
Yes... SEVEN tiers of seafood! Seven tiers of steaming goodness! Seven tiers of.............. Meh.
Don't get me wrong... Most of the seafood were really fresh but we were let down by some of the items which we thought could have been much better.
Tier 1: Clams and Mussels.
Clams and mussels were really fresh! There wasn't much needed to be done with it and for a person who's not the biggest fan of mussels, these mussels were pretty good!
Tier 2: Prawns
The prawns were really fresh too. Crisp and beautifully sweet, this was really nice to have!
Tier 3: oysters.
Fat, juicy but lacking any real taste.
Not sure if it's just me but I still prefer my oysters raw. This was pretty forgettable.
Tier 4: Crawfish (?)
Although they look like prawns or shrimp, they're shells are very similar to sea mantis where you'll need a pair of scissors to cut the underbelly to get the meat out. While it was a nice touch, it wasn't as sweet as the prawns, tasting like a cross between a shrimp and a crayfish.
Tier 5: Squid and Rice
By the time we got to this tier, the squid was sadly overcooked and rubbery. The rice was nice but could have been a little less cooked for me.
Tier 6: scallops
While the scallops were overcooked, it was still tasty and the addition of the "tang Hoon" and garlic was a great addition to have, soaking up all the juices from above and giving the dish a nice punch.
Tier 7: Kimchi soup.
This was a disappointment.
The soup tasted nothing like what a kimchi soup should be. Thick, a little powdery and lacking the sour punch of a kimchi, the soup came only with cabbage. To turn it into a wholesome soup, there is an array of ingredients that you could add into your Korean steamboat. Do note however that everything is chargeable.
Instant Noodles for $2, luncheon meat for $3 was a bit on the steep side although their fish ball with roe was quite good.
Overall:
It's a great place for friends to meet.
And while the seafood was fresh, the price and portioning were a let down. We were barely full after dinner and at $50 per pax, we needed that little bit of oomph to the flavour.
Will we be back? Unsure but for those who haven't, it's worth a try, before the gimmick runs out.
