Where to Eat and Drink in Gresham, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Seafood baskets here come with coleslaw, a dilly tartar sauce, and a choice of crinkle-cut fries or house-made potato chips that are served hot. The captain’s plate offers a melange of fish, clams, shrimp, and oysters, with an option to add calamari. The seafood shack is a family affair for owner Sheila Wakeman — her father, a retired commercial fisherman, often takes orders while her sister supplies cheesecake slices in flavors like baklava, orange creamsicle, and boysenberry." - Janey Wong

The Best Fish and Chips in Portland, Oregon and the Surrounding Suburbs | Eater Portland

"This Gresham fish and chips spot, with its charming white fence and outdoor barrel tables, is a common mid-week dinner for East Powell residents, with fried seafood options like oysters and calamari. Meals come with a choice of fries or house-made chips — as in American potato chips, not fries —though it’s worth it to get a side of the hearty chowder, available in a cup or poured over tots. Slices of rotating cheesecakes are often available as well, with flavors like passionfruit or blackberry swirl." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Best place for great fried seafood and clam chowder in Gresham! I've been going since not long after they opened, and the food has been amazing every time. My go-to is the clam strips basket with the homemade potato chips, but their fish & chips and fish tacos are also delicious! Staff has always been super friendly and happy to help. If you're in the mood for some great seafood and want to support a locally owned business, look no further!

Google
After there recent move to a food court at 174th and Powell there food is still fresh and worth getting . So nice to see the crew there in a safer environment doing a wonderful job putting out a great product. I had the 3 piece Fish and Fries today with a cup of Chowder. Keep it up, success will follow you.

Google
The cod was awesome!! Crispy, yet flaky and juicy. I enjoyed it by itself and in their "spicy" taco. I loved the tacos, it'll be my go to from now on. The Tortilla was just crispy enough and the Pico de gallo was delicious. I air quoted spicy cause it's not. I'm not a huge spicy person but this could've used a little more heat but honestly it was still delicious. This has become a local favorite for me. The dining area gets a little hot and stuffy. I've been passing this place by for years and I'm SO happy I finally tried it.

Dear Josie B

Google
Delish! We ordered the Captains plate, a small fish plate, oyster plate and clam chowder. Clam chowder was plentiful with clams and so flavorful. The seafood plates were also good as was the sauces that came with them. The fish needed more salt/seasoning for my liking. Prices were very reasonable. The family and I enjoyed overall and will more than likely be back!

Jerry N.

Google
Excellent clam chowder! We Love the fish tacos, fresh fish, well seasoned, and fried crispy. It's definitely worth a 30-60 minute drive. Friendly happy staff. Take out is your best option. It's a food truck at a permanent location on blocks. They have a couple of tables under a tent-like shelter. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy.

Rion R.

Google
I was surprised to find them in a new location, but the food and service are as good as ever! We drove down from Amboy, WA because we saw they were open on Saturday; it’s well worth the drive! The new location in a food cart pod makes it easier your group to try different foods while you get the best fish and chips in town!

Terry L

Google
Best Fish and chips in town!!! The breading on the fish is gluten free. Plus I have a shellfish 🦐🦞🍤 🦪 allergy and they cook the fish and chips separately from the shellfish. I've always had a hard time ordering at restaurants because of this. No longer a problem for me 🥳. The fish is so delicious 😋. Nice size pieces. My family enjoys the food from Captains Gallery.

Neil B.

Google
Hands down the best fish and chips in the Gresham area. The fries are a give or take, but the fish and tartar sauce are exceptional. The new location is much better and has a nice place to sit. The service is excellent too; very friendly! If you end at this food cart pod, you really should at least try the fish. We think it's the best cart there!

Yelp
Amazing food and prices and GF!!! Their breading is the best. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Very greasy. 1st time eating fish and chips was OK. But I paid for extra tarter and didn't get it. The cups were barely half full. Fish was good. Called next day ordered a and time and told Ethan about the lack of tarter sauce. He said he'd make it right. He did not, in fact the fish were very greasy and he didn't make it right. Bottom line, won't go back. Customer service has to be important to the business. It appears not so in this case.

Larry P.

Yelp
The Fish, french fries and clam chowder are worth the stop and you will appreciate the fast service and friendly servers

Yelp
Since my favorite fish and chip cart closed down. This one is probably the next best. I will say, they're fried squid... so good! Staff is super nice and pretty fast with the orders. I prefer the classic fish and chips over the sandwich. Location is pretty easy to find. They have covers for customers to sit and wait too, even has a heater. Cool food cart for Gresham area. Call ahead if you want to cut back your wait time. Place is nice and clean.

Yelp
Came on a Friday evening with my fiance and wasn't busy at all. We got 2 orders of fish and fries, an order of calamari and a cup of clam chowder. Once we got home we noticed we didn't get the soup. Called them and they said next time we go in, they would give us a free one. -Fish was okay. The batter was crispy but overall not much flavor at all. The tartar sauce they give is very dill forward and not the traditional kind you would "expect". I also wish that they gave you more than a sliver of lemon. At least give me a good size wedge? -Fries need to be cooked just a bit longer but salted and still good. -Fiancé said calamari was good. Not chewy and had a good flavor. We will end up going back so we can get our clam chowder and I would like to try their cheesecake but I probably wouldn't get the fish again. If they redid their batter with more flavor, I'd be willing to try it again. The gentleman who was at the counter was VERY nice and they did deeply apologize that they forgot the soup.

Yelp
Stopped here randomly for a quick bite since I saw the "Clam Chowder Today" sign and got some fish and clam chowder, and both were super on point. I think it might have been some of the best fried cod I've had in a long long time. It was cooked very nicely to the point where I'm telling you about it here! It was so good I had to stop eating it to save some to share! The price point was great as well as the fast and friendly service and the homemade tartar was I will be returning!

Winston B.

Yelp
Really glad my gf picked up dinner from here. I thought the clam chowder was delicious. I am going to have to go back.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I had to try several things. Fish taco, clam chowder and fried shrimp, all of them were excellent! The owner is super friendly and gracious. This place is definitely great!
google avatar

Shelbie D.

Yelp
Food was good! I enjoyed the breading on the fish - not super thick like some places. Crinkle cut fries are my least favorite fry but I was there for fish anyway ;) the dill in the tarter is pronounced and tasty. Mom got the fish tacos and the slaw was great.

Yelp
You all have earned a customer for LIFE! This place is so amazing and I'm so stoked to have it so close to me! We had never been here before but have had them on my list to check out for awhile now. We asked for some recommendations and was encouraged to order the fish with the chips. The fish was fresh and crispy but the batter wasn't so thick that you couldn't taste the fish. I love it when the batter is more of a compliment to the fish. The chips were great too! Had to have been homemade chips. GET THE TARTAR SAUCE! The most delicious sauce with fresh dill. It's the perfect accompaniment. It was a rainy and cold so we opted to also get a bowl of clam chowder. Chowder was tasty and full of potatoes and bacon too making it very hearty. The ladies at the window overheard me talking to my partner about it being my birthday that day and offered me a free slice of cheesecake! Honestly such an amazingly kind gesture. I ordered the heath bar cheesecake and let me tell you... it was one of the BEST cheesecakes I've ever had. So rich and dense. If you're getting cheesecake, you might as well go all out with it! Everyone needs to check this place out! They are way under hyped and need our yelp love!
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
We just had the fish tacos today! They are absolutely delicious!! We know where we'll be going for taco Tuesdays now!! And I asked for crispy fries and she did them perfectly!

Connie R.

Yelp
Bar none, best fish and chips in Gresham! Actually, the best I have gotten in the USA since I returned from the UK in 1987 after being stationed there for two years! I am soooo happy I found this little jewel of a restaurant. The food is wonderful, the desserts are delightful, and the owner is amazing. Don't drive passed downtown Gresham on Powell without stopping by. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Janice P.

Yelp
I had the cod sandwich, fries and coleslaw. Excellent. Today the owner was there all by herself and she was busy when we got there. Food came fast and hot and owner was very friendly and in wonderful mood. You order at the window and pick up your food there. There's outdoor seating only and of course you can get the food to go. They have the best cheese cake I've ever had. Today I had lemon and my friend had butterfinger. Different flavors. The best.

Arnold C.

Yelp
Very good food and good price as well. It is just small stall so better take the food home to eat especially when it is raining.
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
Fish is very fresh ,good tasting, cooked perfectly. Food cart style covered outdoor seating very reasonably priced . Will definitely go there again

Yelp
Have you ever gone somewhere to eat and you knew with the first bite that you found something special? It was love at first bite for me and my wife at the Captains Galley in Gresham. Living here for almost three years I haven't found a seafood place I really liked. Yes we went to the world famous seafood place in Portland thans been in business since the 1930's. Yes we've been to Mo's On the ocean. But I put Captains Gally ahead of the pack. The best clam chowder I've ever had. Seafood goodness in every bite. As good or better than I've had in Boston. Light crispy battered fish. Not greasy at all. Clam and shrimp that were fresh and delicious. Fancy accommodations? No, it's a food truck...we ate in the car. And don't forget the homemade potato chips. The coleslaw needs some work, but this family business has hit my mark for good pricing and delicious seafood!
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Great fish and chips spot in Gresham! Their clam chowder is flavorful, thick and creamy with an ample amount of clams. The fish and chip options are plentiful and crispy with good quality seafood. They have your standard fish, shrimp, calamari, oysters, and clam options. After trying this place a few times to satisfy my occasional fish and chip craving, I have yet to be disappointed.
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Great food! Good menu, can't wait to try other items! Service was fantastic and the wait was minimal!
google avatar

Vicky C.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing! I'm from Los Angeles, California and we have pretty great food there. This place is definitely one of the best fish and chips I've ever had! Everything was so fresh and so good! Their calamari and clam chowder is soooo good too! The customer service is great too! They kept making sure we had everything we needed! Such a great mom and pop shop! Support small businesses! I have such a happy tummy and heart
google avatar

Jozi M.

Yelp
It was the best. Cooked fresh and to perfection. Intend to go back. Served hot. Can eat on the deck. They have a couple of heaters to help keep you warm.

james h.

Yelp
Kind of trashy. Food ok. Located in front of trashy motel..cook in trailer...very low level outdoor eating area...dont suggest night time. VERY DARK, parking not marked, most not paved, somewhat bad area.
google avatar

Jason A.

Yelp
What a hidden gem this is! The owner is awesome and very kind. I enjoyed everything I've tried. Their fish tacos are a MUST! This place is a must-try if you're in the neighborhood; although, I did meet someone that made their way in town from Beaverton and said that it's worth it. And I would agree!

Yelp
Great fish and chips. Nice people with good service . Parking can be a bit challenging when busy.

Alex S.

Yelp
Love this place! Today we ordered for the office. Impressed with the fish tacos, nice sized taco, especially for the price. The clam chowder is one of the best we have had. The fish was nice and crispy. Fries were seasoned well. Their pink sauce.. fry sauce? was also tasty! I would definitely continue to give this place my business@

Grant R.

Yelp
The menu is pretty much limited to seafood, focusing primarily on fish and chips. I went there the other evening with my wife and got a great fish and chips dinner for a very reasonable price. And talking to the owner, I asked where they source the fish and what type of fish we are eating. The fish was local to the Oregon coast, Ling cod. Could not have been happier.

Amber J.

Yelp
The clam chowder is absolutely on point. Best clam chowder ever. The fish was super good, too. Nice big peices. The service was good. I gave 4 stars because I wasn't impressed with the fries. They were those crinkle fries, and those just aren't good in my opinion. There are a few tables outside to wait at. Over all it's definitely worth it.

Andrea A.

Yelp
Absolutely the best!! Got the fried fish and chips and clam chowder. Hot, fresh, delicious! Great service!

Paula S.

Yelp
It doesn't look like it from the street, but these folks make some excellent gluten free fish and chips! Hard to find for those of us who don't tolerate gluten. Customer service was excellent as well. Small outdoor seating area with heaters, which was an appreciated dining feature. My husband had the clam chowder (thumbs up!), which the cook said is made in small batches throughout the day. Check it out!

Anomous A.

Yelp
They have great fish and chips ! I also would recommend the yummy deserts. I love their fish tacos.

Yelp
I had driven past Captain's Galley countless times without giving them much thought until one day I saw all their rave reviews on Yelp for "fish & chips". So, I stopped in to get some dinner and knew right away after a few bites that the rave reviews weren't an exaggeration...this place is terrific! They use cod for their fish, and the coating is a light breading that comes out with a perfect golden browned crispness. I prefer this lighter style over the thick and heavy batter-dipped fish that has a hard crusty coating that feels like chomping through a hard taco shell. Also, the fish was unfailingly moist and flakey. For me, it just doesn't get any better than this. They offer a choice of fries or hot potato chips, and I think the potato chips are homemade too...with perfect crispness. They are set up mainly for food to-go, but there are four small tables under cover along with a picnic table for anyone who wants to eat there. They're located on an open lot so there's lots of easy parking all around. If you try Captain's Galley even once, I'm fairly sure you'll like them.

Cindy S.

Yelp
The owner is so sweet and personable. We keep going back for the fish and chips. Their sauces are all homemade as well. Never smells or tastes fishy and everything is piping hot and tasty. We're sorry we waited so long to try them. We're forever customers for sure! Terry and Cindy
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Captain's Galley is hands-down the best place to get deliciously fried fish. Always battered to perfection, never too heavy, and always great portions of fish. I especially enjoy their house made chips and the 'special' sauce they make for the fish, definitely a must try.

Pam B.

Yelp
I started trying different seafood items a few months ago, and it's all good, fresh if breaded, lightly so. The Captain and his daughter, Sheila, are friendly and accommodating to small special requests. They also are very efficient and organized. Sheila should market her homemade chowder...it's that good and unique. Next time that's my pick! The only drawbacks are the coleslaw should not be jammed into a sauce size plastic container, and the slaw needs to be bigger chunks. That would be more in line with the quality of the rest of the food. I also wish they would offer 1/2 portions for a lesser price for when you want to order a side item. Limited offerings in sides. Given suggestions, I still think they are worth 5 stars. Check it out. You won't be sorry! Pam

Veronica J.

Yelp
I ordered the #10 (pick two) . I chose shrimp and oysters. I got 4 pieces of shrimp and a bunch of oysters. I recommend the homemade chips; I've not tried the fries. The food is delicious and served quickly. There's a covered eating area. You can order ahead too.
google avatar

C. S.

Yelp
A solid fish and chips place. Only cod, but done right. The highlight is their home cut chips. So thin and crispy- and theybstay crispy for a long time. Chowder is good - a bit too salty.... But solid. Be sure to ask about their specials -

Cherie-Anne M.

Yelp
Always fresh, always tasty. We found this tiny gem about a year ago and have been several times. We are never sorry. Some of the best fish and chips around and so happy to support a local small business.

Serena M.

Yelp
They Actually have Clams in Their Clam Chowder so you Don't Have To Search for Them and It's Awesome Tasting!!! The People are Great !! I Really Like the Home Made Potato Chips, Yummy!!! Everything I Have Eaten From the calamari To the Fish Sandwich \ Burger Is Worth the Wait And Worth Every Dollar Spent.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
small spot right near downtown Gresham with dry and covered outdoor seating. Food is freshly cooked to order and is genuinely delicious. Price is right for what you get in portions and in taste. The fish sandwich is amazing! Nice customer service
google avatar

Steve V.

Yelp
When we woke up this morning, our intention was to head to the coast and have some fish and chips. After realizing that staying closer to home was a better option, we still wanted fish and chips. Before we go any further: get the chips (not the fries) as they are hand-cut and incredible. Same with the sauces provided. Really, really top-notch! I had the Captain's Platter (choose 3). I had the cod, clams, and oysters, while my wife had the cod and chips. They were all fantastic! I'm really glad to have found them and HIGHLY recommend!!
google avatar

Walter R.

Yelp
Best clam chowder, fish and chips and fish tacos that I've ever had. Service is always exellent
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Captains Galley was good. The fish n chips were very good -- I could tell they used high quality ingredients, and they seemed to really take a lot of pride in it. I wasn't a huge fan of the clam chowder, though I'm usually a bit picky there. They encourage fried potato chips instead of fries, which I was a bit surprised at. I'm not sure if fries are an option, but if so I would personally prefer that. The chips are just a bit greasy and not quite what I was looking for. It was busy when I went. They have a system where they will call your name over a speaker. It worked OK, though can get a bit crowded in their little parking area. The prices seemed a bit high, but I think that may be related to quality of the product (especially the fish). I'll probably go again and skip the chowder, and try it with fries. If it goes as I hope, this may be a 4-star upgrade in the future.
google avatar

Rudito B.

Yelp
Decided to give this place a try after reading all the Yelp reviews. Also, a major disappointment at Black Bear Diner's "All You Can Eat Fish Fry" drove me to give Captain's Galley a try. I ordered the 3 piece Captain's Platter for $15 (cod, shrimp and clam strips) and was very happy! For $5 more you could also order fried oysters but I passed on this as I'm not quite sure I would like oysters but I will give it a try next time. Opted for the fresh made chips which were awesome. I will definitely be back to try the Clam Chowder. Also, don't forget to ask for their house-made red dipping sauce. Yum!
google avatar

Nathan J.

Yelp
The way fish and chips are supposed to be! My go to in Gresham. Not a fan of oysters but the ones here are amazing!

Makeesha W.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious, and I must say, their clam chowder was nothing short of amazing. The flavors were spot-on, and the texture was perfect. Each bite was a delightful journey of taste and satisfaction. I highly recommend trying their clam chowder and exploring the rest of their mouthwatering menu. A definite must-visit for any food lover!
google avatar

Genesis W.

Yelp
These ladies were amazing! There was a lady in front of us that was asking for everything but the kitchen sink literally! They were patient and accomodated her difficult request with a smile. Our food came out promptly after we ordered and it all came out nice and hot. The clam chowder soup was packed with clams and flavor plus the portion was huge! My soicy fish sandwich was juicy and i got the house made chips. My girls ordered the homemade heathbar and chocolate cheesecake and it was great. Really hit the spot after a long drive. Mahalo for the great food and service
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Wow! This is great, lightly battered, cod fish and chips. High quality, fresh cod tasted much better than the halibut I had a few days ago at a place on the Coast. I haven't tried anything else here, but judging from the amount of customers ordering the Captains plate, I will be back to try that as well. Great little shop!
google avatar

Lacey H.

Yelp
Bomb dot com! The fish batter is light, never too heavy! Melts in your mouth with the malt vinegar and tartar sauce!
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Love this place! The best fish and chips and I can't get enough of the clams. The sauces are great and love their homemade cheesecakes.
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
Super cute place and incredibly friendly people. Odd location, but absolutely worth it for a pick up order. Got oyster, shrimp, fish, fries and chowder. Everything was super good and fresh. Man, they have amazing dipping sauces, even spicy mayo for the fries. Only things making this not an easy 5 stars is that their fish portions are a little small (still tasty) and their chowder wasn't memorable. Maybe just an off day on the soup, needed more clams and bacon, but definitely ate it still.
google avatar

Yelp
My philosophy is that the very best seafood joints always seem to, upon first assessment, stoke up doubt. Doubt of the quality of food, of my decision making abilities, of what this could potentially mean for my digestive system. In the heart of Gresham by a small greenway, in a seedy motel parking lot, you'll find just the place. A true pearl among seaweed. We family styled a few meals and I couldn't even pick out parts that I enjoyed the best because it was all a delightful "escape to the beach". -The fish in the fish and chips basket was so crispy and tender with home made potato chips fried to complete textural perfection. - The shrimp and crinkle cut fries basket were fresh and still crispy even after the car ride home, but not greasy. - The chowder was the only slightly disappointing thing as it was kind of gelatinous in texture and inedibly salty (my guess is that it was poorly mixed? Because after we added milk at home it was DELICIOUS.) I can't wait to go again and enjoy their really well maintained and thoughtfully created outdoor eating space as the weather gets nicer!
