"For more than 50 years, Captain’s Tavern has been Pinecrest’s top choice for local seafood and house-made specialties. Founded in 1971 by Bill “the Captain” Bowers, this family-run restaurant serves fresh seafood at reasonable prices, thanks to long-established supplier relationships. The rustic, nautical-themed interior, adorned with model ships and maritime relics, clearly leans into the nautical theme. Adjacent to the restaurant, the Captain’s Tavern Seafood Market offers plenty of fresh fish and shellfish to prepare at home." - Eater Staff

"Captain's Tavern is a South Miami spot that's been around since the '70s. It's endearingly old school, with lots of dark wood and red tablecloths, and they serve all kinds of seafood dishes - everything from sushi to fried oysters to seafood risotto. Next door to the restaurant is their seafood market, where you can find an equally impressive amount of shellfish, lobster, and pretty much anything else that swims in the Atlantic Ocean and is legal to eat." - Ryan Pfeffer

Google
What a fantastic place! Seafood and atmosphere were great, perfect for birthdays or a relaxing night out. We received extremely attentive and friendly service from the staff. Special shout out to Don who went above and beyond coordinating a gifted bottle of wine for us.

Maria Morell

Google
Not impressed at all, this is my first time to have a seafood risotto with melted cheese, peas and asparagus tips and mushrooms. The atmosphere is more of a cafeteria than anything else.

Sam Singh

Google
We made reservations for 11 and we were sat right in time. - our server Kevin knew his menu and was really great - and the food was awesome

Google
We plan ahead our Saturday early dinner to visit this restaurant after reading a review about a list of the oldest restaurants in Miami, my son and I pick this restaurant, we arrive around 5 pm , the restaurant is pretty dark and the Decor seems stock in time , in a good way , the host was nice a gave us a nice table on the side of the bar , next to a fish tank , and it was a little be of ambiance, it seems to be crowded by loyal costumers and off course, you can perceive how well treated they were, barely hear the music or any laugh, extremely quite, the server Junior were very good and attentive, the food nothing memorable, a woman who seems to be the manager , with a bitter face , was looking to our table all the time then halfway our dessert, they send us the check, half of the restaurant was still empty. I considered really rude, is a place with no interest adding new clients to his price and very rigid atmosphere. If you prefer a relaxing this is not the place.

Google
I was shocked to see that this place had an average rating of 3.5. I've lived so close to this restaurant and this is my first time here. The interior is absolutely amazing. It transported me back in time to my younger years. I'm not a seafood fan but the family is so I'll take one for the team. The restaurant did not smell like a fish house. The waiter (Anthony) was absolutely great. He was very honest and took his time explaining all the dishes and their accompanying sides. We ordered Churrasco, Trout, Lobster & Oysters. All the food was fresh, delicious and large serving size. We loved the atmosphere and decor. We have to come back for crab season. Well done Captains Tavern!!!! We'll definable be back.

Google
Our dining experience at Captains Tavern was supreme! Good places like this are hard to come by. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are dining in a real captain's ship. The food is unlike any other seafood place in the area. With fresh ingredients and good recipes this location is a true hidden gem!! 10/10 would definitely recommend.

Jason Keith

Google
Awesome place to eat. Seafood was super fresh. We are visiting. We will be back before we leave!

Nachaely Ramos Vega

Google
The place is good as is the food and customer service. We received our food in a reasonable time and everything was excellent and delicious. I recommend it to share with family or friends. It also has a children's menu. If you are in the Miami area you must visit this place.

Chuck E.

Yelp
Service wasn't so great, but our server was very nice. Stone crabs were a bit dry. Ambiance takes one back to the 70s. We know people who used to go here all the time, but not so much anymore. Don't think we will be back.

Oscar T.

Yelp
As you walk in through the front doors at Captains Tavern, you're immediately transported back to the 1970s. The decor in here looks like it's probably the same as the day they opened, and I love that about it! As you walked to your table, you can't help to feel the awesome family restaurant vibe. The place is always packed, and it's definitely a neighborhood restaurant, as you often see regulars greeting each other. The staff is friendly and the service is excellent. The food is always perfect. I've never been disappointed with anything I've had. I love their seafood medley, the lobster bisque is top notch .... and my favorite dessert is the banana cream pie!!

Nicolas P.

Yelp
Amazing place. The staff and menu items are phenomenal. Go have a bottle of Justin isosceles, order some of their really good oysters, then get Hog snapper macadamia which is my favorite and finish off with banana cream pie. Ask for Nico, you'll love his service.

Rafael S.

Yelp
Been excited to come to this traditional Miami restaurant. The Hostess, Claudia, was awesome to our group of 7. Our server, Shianne did a good job with our big group. The food was fine; Escargots, Crab-cakes, Stuffed Mushrooms and Raw Oysters are all good. The cocktails are on the weak side; had to ask for Aperol Spritz to have more Aperol and Server made sure Bartender improved the 2nd round. Wine by glass was a good value @$6. The lobsters (stuffed and tail) were fine. The FL Lobster tail @$48 is not a good value and a bit overcooked/dry. The fishes; Branzino and Snapper were fine, as well as Cajun Scallops. Nice but expensive desserts and good Espressos. The group was happy.

Mary F.

Yelp
Food was so good and fresh. I ordered the 2 pound lobster. My friend took me out for my birthday. It comes with salad or Cole slaw and yellow rice or baked potato. I had the Cole slaw and the baked potato. I had also lychee martini very nice and the escargot it was very tasty. For dessert I had the bread pudding with rum. Very good. This place I give it 5 starts is very much worth it. The service was on point. Definitely, will come back.

Ericka G.

Yelp
Had such a lovely birthday dinner here. Melanie was our server and was absolutely pleasant and patient with us. I love how this restaurant has been around forever but the service and food remain great. Service started with drink orders and complimentary hot bread and butter. Appetizers we started off with the conch fritters that were tender and tasty. Went perfect with that Dijon honey mustard sauce. Next was the new England clam chowder that was not to thick but had the perfect consistency. I just wanted a simple lobster dinner and ordered my 2 pound steamed happiness. Alongside I chose a house salad with garlic dressing (loved this dressing) and sautéed spinach (came with mushrooms). I devoured this with no shame. Parents had the sea bass (with requested lemon caper sauce) and a side of fettuccine alfredo. The alfredo was extremely rich and filling. Other dish were scallops (lemon caper atop) and sweet potato fries. Dish was very light yet tasty. For dessert I wasn't sharing so I had my birthday slice of key lime pie and enjoyed every bite. Perfect tang and sweetness here. Mom had the bread pudding. She closed her eyes upon each bite. I had to try and the feeling is so mutual. Next time I think we'll start with dessert first because omg it was heavenly! Thx for a great birthday dinner and the singing of my non-sharing key lime treat..lol

Yelp
Service was a little slow but They were short staffed. I have been going here for years and the ambiance is always friendly and enjoyable. I had stone crabs claws - of course they were great ! We also had grouper 2 ways and both were awesome Definitely go here and you will be happy you did .

Orlando M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a laid back, old school spot with excellent service, a throwback ambiance, and awesome dishes. Check this place out ASAP! Been several times and it never disappoints.

Steve M.

Yelp
I'm an old guy but it seems like this place was here before I was born. Classic is the word I would use to describe this place The freshest quality seafood, a huge list of species cooked anyway you desire. The service is a 10 plus the attention to detail is always there. Old school, you millennials wouldn't appreciate a place like this - dark wood aquariums classic cocktails. Thursdays is lobster night. Go see Mark in the bar.

Edith G.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and atmosphere! The fish, side dishes and even dessert was spectacular ! They actually clean with tables with paper towels and windex instead of a dirty rag

Frank A.

Yelp
Amazing selection of fresh seafood, and a very romantic ambience in the dining room taking you back to a better time. They are very attentive and the service was excellent from our server. Definitely coming back very soon.

Yelp
The worst Matecumbe fish I've had in my life, it tasted and looked like a fake rubber fish. And yes they charged me for it.

Jennifer U.

Yelp
Ok so my mom worked here many many years ago and also told me how great it was. 10 years later I went and she was so right. Everything was so yummy. Service was exceptional. I wish I knew the servers name I don't remember her mentioning her name but she was great. By great I mean we had a toddler with us and she so accommodating. All I remember is she had a necklace with a P on it and I believe a nose piercing. Anyways she was great. Food, now food was delicious. Literally from The complementary bread to the margarita to the crab cake to the stuffed shrimp to my son's sundae. Just great all around. You must visit. And the vibe is great too. It's a vintage fish house with great food and an amazing staff.

Candice R.

Yelp
Came here with a small group and it was close to our hotel. The interior is pretty dated (dark wood, glass on top of of table top, paper mats) and the hostess was around the side abs not when you first walk in. Our server did well and was surprised we tipped 20% which let you knows the typical patrons are cheap or pretend like they don't know how to tip. I'm also surprised Miami doesn't already add an automatic tip like most metropolitan areas. The menu is not as extensive as it appears to be on yelp. Our party had lobster bites, oysters Rockefeller, soft shell crab, conch fritters, risotto, fried snapper, and the salmon. The snapper is not breaded or battered which was what my friend wanted and the fritters were mostly filler. Everything else was good and we were happy with our meals. They have a private parking lot too if that is important to you.

Maria M.

Yelp
Where do I begin??? Oysters Rockefeller, lobster roll sushi? Scrumptious crab cakes? Everything was out of this world. A must!

Yamile M.

Yelp
The food and service was great. Great Ceasar salad and tuna poke were amazing. The Dijon snapper was amazing as well. Nice place nice ambience.

Cari V.

Yelp
This is old Florida! Like taking a step back in time and it is amazing!! The food is exceptional and fresh. The drinks are on point! full bar!

Sandra S.

Yelp
Have been going here for many years, but have moved to the NE section of Miami, so it is far for me. I went there tonite with my sons. First visit in a long time. Enjoyed the dinner and had a very nice server. The restaurant was clean and the hostess was pleasant. The place was busy, but not so busy that we were able to be seated quickly.

Cameron B.

Yelp
I've been to this place over 10 times and their food is awesome. They also have a huge selection of food that are all great. Recommend their good fish. Captains Tavern is also always quiet and has great service.

Stephanie A.

Yelp
The I side of the restaurant is super old school but nostalgic. They put a little too much Alfredo in my pasta so it was a bit much. Servers were nice though.

Roger S.

Yelp
Being going there for years . Menú has changed . Loved their lightly breaded steamer Clams etc but no longer on menu . Wish they'd open for lunch again . We miss Bill

Yelp
Hello everyone and I really hope this review finds you all doing ver well. So you are thinking about checking out Captains Tavern right? Well all I have to say is great choice! Captains Tavern has been a seafood staple in the South Florida area for many years. They are located in a sort of hidden strip mall right off of US1; however, there is plenty of parking available and very easy to get in as well from both South and North directions. They have a variety of seafood choices covering shellfish, all sort of fish items, raw bar and everything in between. That said though, if you love Oysters well then they have a wide selection in including Bluepoints which are my personal northeasterly favorites. We have been coming here for years and they have never disappointed on either the food or the service. They do tend to get busy so you may want to try them early but the wait is never very long from what I can tell. Friday and Saturday's tend to be pretty busy but again, well worth the trip and the time if you ask me. Ambiance is pretty laid back and the place does have a 80's vibe / decor but hey it works and is actually pretty interesting. Service will not be a problem either as they are very attentive and will provide any recommendations if you are new to the menu as well. Freshness of the seafood is awesome and really this is where the rubber hits the road in my humble opinion. So if you find yourself in the mood for some seafood and happen to be in the Dadeland Mall or The Falls area you may want to give them a shot. Enjoy and Bon Appétit!

Shawn M.

Yelp
Most people know the kitchen closes at 10pm. We called at 930 pm to confirm and advised we were en route. They said of course just arrive and order before 10pm and you're good. We arrived before 10pm and they told us they were closed. Some bullshit excuse that the kitchen wanted to go home. You don't treat people like this Shame on the Wednesday night staff, especially the hostess and the cook. It's unconscionable to refuse to serve customers when they arrive before 10pm.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Old school seafood restaurant. The decor has not changed in the 23 years I have been going there. Classic seafood joint with fish tanks. The service is above and beyond excellent. Melanie waited on us during our last visit and she was so helpful and accommodating. My favorite dish is the Macadamia nut crusted yellowtail. Wow. Each meal comes with fresh rolls and cold salad. I like the homemade house vinaigrette and I get a side of crumpled blue cheese. Delicious. All of the wines are reasonably priced. I really enjoy going there on the weekends when there is a line and I have to wait. I go to the bar area and Mark makes me a classic cocktail or 2 or 3...lol. This is a MUST try if you have never been here. Keep up the solid work The Captains Tavern.

Stefanie S.

Yelp
Went here with a couple of friends on a Saturday evening. My friend's family has been coming here for years. When you go inside, you feel like you stepped back in time to a cozy old-fashioned seafood restaurant, circa 1970's or 1980's. I liked it. I ordered grilled branzino. It came with a choice of baked potato, french-fries, or rice. This was in addition to either coleslaw or salad. Many of the seafood entrees were around $30. I loved my meal. It was delicious. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the server. He seemed to be newish, and I asked if I could get a substitution for one of the sides. He said he doesn't think so, but will check. He just delivered the meal with the original side and no response. So, would I come here again? Heck yeah!

DiscoGeorge G.

Yelp
Saw a buddy of mine posting about this place and thought I would try it. It's located about 5 minutes away from Dadeland and right off US1. I heard it has been a staple to area locals and it showed . The Bar was completely full with what looked like Daily Regulars. It was definitely a experience taking in the nautical decor & 1970's feel of to the location. Once the staff came over she was friendly and helpful with the food selection telling us the crowd favorites. We ended up ordering the Stuffed Mushroom with Crab that were delicious. And my date ordered the Shrimp and Scallops with Curry sauce and rice that I would give 4 stars. I ended up getting the Seafood Risotto with Mushrooms that also was a 4 star meal . Will definitely go back to try more dishes that sounded great

Ari G.

Yelp
Food was great, service was great, drives me crazy when I spend $500 for dinner and they nickel and dime me for ponzu and kimchi sauce, do you also charge for sugar when someone orders iced tea????

Paul C.

Yelp
So... we were in from LA for a 60th Anniversary w in-laws. The Mr treated us to dinner here. Great oyster, excellent service and a fun, casual atmosphere. My fish special (sautéed Halibut) was swimming in a bland, flavorless sauce with destroyed vegetables. The Conch was good but fried and anything fried is good. Decent Manhattan, tart/good Key Lime Pie. This is a nice place if you lived nearby... but FAR FAR from any kind of fine dining.

Tanya S.

Yelp
We cozy restaurant. Everything on the menu is great. The bread pudding is to die for. The service was also great. We got seating immediately.

margarita g.

Yelp
Food excellent as always. Fresh salmon and fish. The waiter super attentive great restaurant. I have been going there fue years always a great meal. Did take a picture of the mussels or Escargot but they were also amazing.

Raquel P.

Yelp
No longer my "Go to Place" ! All the servers are new and most inexperienced. The black skillet mussels were tiny and the garlic sauce not very garlicky. The server was new and never asked if we wanted drinks or what sides we wanted. Everything seemed a little off whack. How sad !

Cristina F.

Yelp
Excellent! After all these years it never disappoints. I had the yellowtail matacumbe and my husband had the yellowtail macadamia and they were both delicious. Our server Kevin was great!

Etienne H.

Yelp
W O W. This place a family favorite and one that I've visited several times over 10 years and for my parents for the last 39 YEARS! The owner and truly made this an awesome destination with an amazing assortment of surf and turf that is both visually arresting and delectable. The Snapper over coconut rice was superb as were the oysters. Every plate in our 6 person party left their plates bare - no way of making a wrong choice. Now the desserts truly top things off. I highly recommend the Chocolate Mousse which is served on limited occasions but is a must do for chocolate lovers. You won't be disappointed! Bon appétit!

Chris H.

Yelp
Service is ok, but the place needs a refurb really bad. Smells musty. Not fond of the steak, very bland.

B W.

Yelp
Everything about this place screams "40 years ago", some of it in a fun, nostalgic way, and some of it in a "tired-needs-an-update" way. The update part includes the restrooms, and 1 strange thing. Note that I am 100% in favor of single person gender neutral bathrooms. These (being from 40 years ago) were not. But the strange thing was the signage: men's room showed the usual figure of a man; ladie's room had 2 signs, 1 of the usual woman's figure and a 2nd next to it with a man's figure and a wheelchair. Huh? The food was all good with the exception of the bread pudding dessert. It may have been good, but it was absolutely SWIMMING in the rum sauce. The sauce overwhelmed the bread pudding and made it soggy; it looked like a bowl of soup. A drizzle of the sauce over the bread pudding would have been sufficient. And to the hostess: try smiling a little.

Ana V.

Yelp
This restaurant is an institution. It's been around for more than 30 years and the quality and cocktails are still amazing. I love having some raw oysters and a dry martini to start my meal. I will then order a grilled or blackened fish for my main course. This place is old school not trendy and the regulars from the neighborhood keep coming back.

Pat B.

Yelp
I had read the history of this establishment and was visiting the area this weekend. My guest and I had the Cracked Conch, it was very well seasoned but a little tough. The Arugula salad was delicious and the Shrimp Scampi was simply OFF THE CHAIN GOOD! My guest and I frequent many restaurants especially for good spirits. Dean the Bartender made the best Long Island. We got there shortly after they opened and pretty soon the entire place was crowded. This establishment is well rooted in the community and is a landmark. We will definitely be returning. Thank you Felicia (Fil) for your awesome hospitality

Sonia S.

Yelp
Tried a few appetizers a couple of days ago. Was particularly interested in the soft shell crabs. We sat at the bar and ordered 2 soft shell crabs, fried oysters and the spring rolls. The soft shell crabs and the fried oysters were disappointing. The batter was lacking any consistency whatsoever, and was soggy and wet. A total disappointment since the crunchiness of the batter is an important aspect of the success of the dishes. The spring rolls were OK, at least they were not soggy! Service at the bar was attentive, despite being busy.

Mary M.

Yelp
We have been going to Captains Tavern for over 30 years! The seafood is always fresh. I love the miso salmon. Great prompt service and delicious deserts. You can't go wrong here.

Tricia K.

Yelp
I found out the secret to getting a table quickly at Captain's Tavern!! Go during Spring Break!! Our party of 5 was immediately seated. We got there at 6:30 pm and I thought that we would have to wait for an hour to get a table, especially on 2 for 1 lobster night!! Here's what we ordered: Cracked conch appetizer- too salty & greasy (oil was probably not hot enough when they fried it) Grilled lobster tail - perfect!! So delicious!! Grouper Oscar - okay. Linguine with seafood - cleaned the plate!! Jada sushi roll - weird looking but tasty! 2 for 1 Maine lobster - sooo good!! Creme brûlée - probably the best I have ever had Banana cream pie - my husband thought it was excellent and wants more!! Looking forward to going back soon!

Steve D.

Yelp
Great local place, doesn't look like much from the outside but once you get in it's got a long time established ambience. Fish was great and all the people that were dining there you could tell had been there many many times. Everybody knew each other except for me of course it was our first time.

Ethan R.

Yelp
Captains tavern was amazing. But the service was the best part about the experience. Make sure to request Celeste as a waitress. She's amazing.

Sam S.

Yelp
Not what it used to be, sadly. This was always my family's go to restaurant. Due to the pandemic, so many places just aren't what they used to be. The menu is significantly smaller, the service is far from great (though they warn you at the front door that they're short staffed, which is respectable), and the food just wasn't as tasty. I probably won't ever stop trying though, especially for that chocolate mousse cake.

Michael L.

Yelp
This is a simple American seafood joint with no frills and basic menu choices. However, I must emphasize that the quality of the food and service are well above average. The restaurant is desperately in need of a facelift - it's like being in a time capsule from the early 1960's. All in all, a good choice for those who just love fish and seafood.

Paula V.

Yelp
Last night I dined at this place for the first and last time, we were a party of six, and were celebrating a birthday. I ordered the shrimp and vegetables dish and it was the worst meal I've had in my life!!! Five little shrimps, an over cooked cup of jasmine rice and steamed vegetables out of a bag, upon receiving my dish I knew it was going to be tasteless, I was the last one on the table to receive the meal and also the only one who left without eating, I was embarrassed to make a scene in front of my family, not only the waitress never came to checkup on my food she didn't seem to get a manager involved, when bill was presented gratuity was included and I had to pay full price for a meal that shouldn't be on the menu to start with, specially how poorly executed it is. I'm a waitress myself and I've never made a single guest pay for a meal they did not like, with so many good restaurants in Miami, driving 13 miles to come here was a waste of time and money, I usually don't like to write negative reviews but after calling the restaurant to get this issue resolved and being told I'd get a call back sometime today and still no answer leaves me no other choice than write this review hoping people see how awful and careless your management staff is.

Jerrold O.

Yelp
First time in a long time. The restaurant seems cleaner and the wait and bus stuff were here very friendly and efficient. We had salmon and stone crabs and enjoyed both. No rush to give yo our table and Mark made s delicious pair of Lychee martinis. Definitely recommend.

Catherine H.

Yelp
Excellent service and meal will be returning. Went there for the lobster dinner on Tuesday was seated properly and served promptly enjoyed the service

Teresa M.

Yelp
Have been coming here 40 years. I don't know what's going on, but things are changing and not necessarily for the better. I have always LOVED this neighborhood seafood escape. Tonight left me so disappointed. I don't eat out alot anymore because I cook pretty well and it's more cost effective. That being said, when I do go to a restaurant, I go because I would like a "rest" from cooking all the time. I expect good food and knowledgeable skilled servers, cooks/chefs etc. In the "old days" you were catered to, made to feel like your experience was "special" and your food would be cooked properly and hopefully tasted delicious. You're paying good money for an evening of enjoyment. This place has never seriously disappointed me until tonight. I knew something was weird when the new server asked us if we "wanted our potatoes while waiting for our meal?!" I didn't give it much thought until my husband started to realize how long it was taking. I was still trying to be positive, so I hadn't really noticed. I was very hungry at this point and began to feel the drawn out wait. The server wasn't very attentive. She only had our table I think, so who knows what she was doing in the back? Finally the salmon arrives, both overcooked and mine was white. There was no evidence of light orange succulent salmon. I had to get take a few bites because I had waited so long. The restaurant was not full, yet she apologized for the delay because there "were so many orders in the back"??? I was just going to eat it because of hunger. My husband suggested I send it back because it was simply not right. I finally agreed. When she whisked it away she asked if 15 minutes was ok to wait. Not thinking, I said yes. Why would a piece of salmon take that long. We were her only customers, the restaurant wasn't busy? She never came out to check on us, let us know how things were going. I was starting to drain. Finally it arrived. It looked nice, but except for a few spots was overcooked, again. Not sure how this is possible. We asked to speak to Dale, the person whose mother owns the place and he runs it. I love his mother and normally he is a pretty cordial guy, but he was deadpan tonight. We tried to explain without blame, the situation that was going on. He said I should have told her to order it medium if I like it with some color and succulent. He said most people "like it this way" I don't feel he was being honest. I've never had problem with the salmon being overcooked, maybe undercooked, once in a blue moon. Generally comes out good. He offered nothing to make the experience a little better. We both felt he simply could care less. He apologized and walked away. I'm not looking for a free meal, but maybe a piece of key lime pie to soften the fragmented, poorly cooked salmon, twice! After all, I don't go there because I need to eat. I go because I need to "rest/restaurant" for a brief momentCedar Plank Salmon in time. I still love Captain's Tavern, but hope I'm not seeing the beginning of the end. Come on crew, please don't let this happen!
