Caribbean and Japanese Eateries Are Setting Up Shop in Reading Terminal Market | Eater Philly

"Slated to open early spring in the former Carmen’s Famous Italian Hoagies and Cheesesteaks spot, Careda’s Caribbean Cuisine is run by Jamaica-born Careda Matthews, who plans to sell dishes like jerk chicken and oxtail. Having worked at Delilah’s and Keven Parker’s Soul Food Cafe in the market, she says she realized there was demand for Caribbean specialties and wanted to create a Center City space for authentic Caribbean cuisine." - Rachel Vigoda

If you're downtown and searching for that cozy soothing feeling that Jamaican food gives, this is the place. Seriously, a good gem in Redding Terminal. We had the beef patties, fish platter, jerk chicken platter, mac and cheese, and juices. Walked out on Arch Street super satisfied.

The oxtails were horrible. It tasted like vinegar - I think they were spoiled. The oxtails were tiny, mostly bone and fat and barely any meat. I never waste food but I could only eat a few bites and threw out the rest. The rice and peas were dry, barely any beans and the cabbage was just "ok". I also tried the curry chicken - the flavor was very good but it was salty. I am always supporting black owned businesses and used to love stopping here on my way home from Philly. I don't know what went wrong - they had no line and the food has gione downhill. I hope they read this and make some improvements!!

As somebody who has eaten a lot of Jamaican food, especially While in Jamaica, this is nothing special. As food in general, it's decent. But when you're thinking about having jerk chicken, this was a forgetful experience

Someone mentioned that they only received 3 pieces of oxtail and a bone. I did as well... and the two pieces that I did get were small. They were also tough and fatty. Which is surprising because I went to the meat market right next to it and was impressed by the beautiful, meaty oxtails that they had on display. I am not used to the light color and sweetness of the oxtail and gravy. I prefer it to be more savory. I would not recommend it. I do recommend Jamaican Way in South Philly, who has better tasting oxtail and give plenty of it.

Amazing food and authentic flavors! The jerk chicken with rice & peas, cabbage, and beef patty were all excellent. Everything tasted homemade and full of love. Highly recommend for great Caribbean cuisine!

What a true taste of the Caribbean in Philly, Our group attended a four day conference and ate our way through the Reading Terminal Market. At Careda's one person chose the curried goat and I went for the fried fish that looks like a fish, not filet or fish steak style. Someone else chose a delicious curried salmon that is a new twist for me even though I lived in the Caribbean for 4 years. We spent a while wading through the huge list of sides and went for collards, cole slaw, and candied yams, the latter of which served as dessert. Great Caribbean food and service. Wait in line along the food display counters as you view all the options and advance in the line until you reach the order, pay, and pick up counter. Eat at one of the central accessible tables. Accessible entry/exits are at the main entrances to the Reading Terminal Market. Some smaller entrances have 6 step entry. They have Accessible restrooms are shared by all 80 venues. Accessible parking for wheelchair vans is available in in paid lot, which gets busy at busy times.

I don’t understand why this place is only at 2.8 stars. The food was absolutely delicious! I got a curried goat platter, with rice and peas, cabbage, and a side of candied yams. Everything was seasoned so well and the goat was tender. The candied yams were excellent and they give you a good portion of everything, considering the price. The service was very nice too. I asked for a side of sauce after paying and they said it normally costs 10 cents extra but they gave it to me for free

The 2.8 rating is misleading! I don’t always eat Carribean food, but when I do it has to be as good as this! I got Curry Chicken with white rice & collard greens. All of it was hot, flavorful and a good portion! I ordered a side of whiting fish that wasn’t so warm, but flavorful and a good portion. Not a fan of rewarming up fish so I’ll take that L but if it was hot and fresh it would’ve also been on point. The Sorrel was also fresh and tasty. I enjoyed their food overall, I highly recommend them!
