Carette – Place des Vosges
A beautiful spot tucked under the arcades of Place des Vosges. The setting is classic Paris: elegant, historic, and ideal for people-watching.
The Paris-Brest dessert was rich and indulgent without being too heavy.
Their hot chocolate is a must-try: thick, velvety, and topped with generous chantilly cream. Yes, it’s on the pricier side (€44 for lunch), but the location and quality make it worthwhile.
Service was friendly and efficient, even during busy hours. Great for a relaxed lunch or a sweet afternoon break.
🏰 Historic Origins
Place des Vosges, originally called Place Royale, is the oldest planned square in Paris, built between 1605 and 1612 under the reign of King Henri IV. It was inaugurated with a grand celebration for the wedding of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. The square was revolutionary for its time: all façades were built in a uniform style—red brick with white stone trim, topped by steep slate roofs—creating a harmonious architectural ensemble that still stuns today.
Before its construction, the site was home to the Hôtel des Tournelles, a medieval palace demolished by Catherine de' Medici after her husband Henri II died there in a jousting accident.

🎨 Cultural Significance
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Place des Vosges was the address of choice for Parisian nobility. It was exclusive—access to the gardens was once restricted to just one day a year, August 25th, the feast of Saint Louis. Over time, it became a hub for artists and intellectuals. Victor Hugo, author of Les Misérables, lived at No. 6, now a museum dedicated to his life and work.
