I'm literally trying to formulate another way to say "Wow!" in my head, but the brain just ain't working right at this moment. So, let me just be cliche and spit it out: WOOOOWZA! Incredible wines in a super fun environment with top tier service. Ladies and gents, this is the finest of Los Olivos!
I heart Carhartt!!! Out of all of the wineries that I visited during my trip to Santa Ynez Valley, this one was the best experience hands down. I've been to my fair share of wineries, and one thing that is hard to come by nowadays is that true family winery experience. Sure you can find many family owned wineries that are in operation. But how often can you walk into the tasting room and actually chat with the winemaker?! And I'm not talking about during a special wine tasting event. I mean literally walking into the tasting room and having the winemaker pouring their wines for you at the bar. I live for these kinds of interactive experiences.
So, I walk in without a reservation hoping to get a table on their cute back patio. Of course it's busy and rightfully so. Angie and Maria greet me and tell me that I can have a seat at the bar while I wait for a table. But let me tell you; once I sat at that bar, I never even left! I stayed there for a few hours... probably longer than I should have, but damn was it fun! Decided to do a tasting, and unbeknownst to me, Chase (the winemaker) started pouring my wines.
He didn't immediately announce himself as the winemaker, but I could instantly tell that he was involved in some aspect of the winemaking process. His passion told it all. We chatted about their wine fermentation process to a few of the different wine regions (since I'm from the Bay Area and Sonoma/Napa is in my backyard). This man just exuded passion and knowledge that made me want to soak it up like a sponge. It wasn't until I opened up their catalog that I noticed that I had been chatting with the winemaker himself. I was floored. How amazing that he just casually fraternizes with everyone. So humble.
And speaking of that catalog or wine tasting menu; it's so stinking adorable! They actually have pictures of the family and staff! This is truly a family owned operation in the sense that the family is involved in every aspect of the winery. We love to see it, y'all! And the patrons are the friendliest people everrr! So many fun locals keep this place alive and for a good reason. The atmosphere is so chill, relaxing, and welcoming. Literally did not want to leave, and that's the point. It makes total sense why this place thrives.
And that WINE! Cannot forget about the most important thing! It's exquisite. I love the distinction between the two different winemakers and their labels (A Mom and Son duo). Both very distinct and different in their own right but also equally tasty. I enjoyed every single wine that I tried, but the standouts for me were their Pinot Noir, Southerly Red Blend, and Rosé.
The rosé is fruity, light, and refreshing. Perfect for a warm summer day or for light sipping. The Pinot is very bright and fruit forward. A classic style that's easy drinking. And that Southerly Blend is just whoa!! Beautifully earthy and with complex flavors that are very well balanced. Love, love, looove the wines here! The price points are extremely reasonable for the high quality that you'll receive.
I mean dayum... there's nothing bad that I can say about Carhartt! So glad that I found this tasting room and so glad that they are thriving. I'm so excited to come back on my next trip. YOU should definitely pay them a visit too, pronto! You won't regret it, I can promise you that much.
