Healthy Portland Restaurant Plates That Don’t Feel Like a Bummer | Eater Portland

"There are a bajillion different places to get smoothie bowls in Portland, but Alberta’s Carioca Bowls, with its Trader-Joe’s-hippie-tiki vibes and thorough selection of acai bowls, is one of the top spots to find one. With the antioxidant-rich fruit adding a ton of flavor to the base, toppings like peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, and pistachios add nutrients, crunch, and flavor to each bowl." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Dreamy corner cafe serving up acai bowls with a lovely outdoor dining garden. Started a recent day with a complimentary ginger shot before digging in to delicious and protein-packed carioca bowl. Bowls in two sizes. Medio is plenty for most. Can choose from menu, specials or create you own from fruit, nut butters, seeds and more.

Google
This place has a great atmosphere and even better staff. Beautiful bowls and a fun environment. Highly recommend if you’re looking for delicious and fresh acai.

Steve

Google
Great for a healthy choice. My acai bowl had excellent flavors, fresh (and refreshing). I felt better about myself after eating here. They seem to want to keep their pricing reasonable.

Google
I absolutely love Carioca Bowls, I have been coming here since moving to the area and have always enjoyed! However, the last couple of times I have come, the bowls are usually without peanut butter (which is my second favorite part of the bowl😂) and twice I’ve left before noticing! I love coming here, but if you’re out of something it would be nice to know when ordering🫶

Google
Over $15 for a large açaí bowl and it has 4 slices of strawberry, half a banana and barely filled halfway. Not really a good value.

Cristina S

Google
Really bad service, very expensive for small portions! Paid 20 dollars on the big portion that was not even filled through half. Also, 2 hours before closing was sold out of cheese bread and all warm savory options. Disappointing!

Nhi Shirley

Google
Loveeee this place! I’m a huge fan of açaí bowls and haven’t been able to find authentic açaí locally until coming here! There’s a lot of beautiful outdoor seating on the large patio with lush greenery throughout that makes you feel like you’ve transported on a tropical vacation. Even the bright colors all around just make you feel happy. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious! I had a custom acai bowl with the rio base topped with fresh peaches, mint, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and granola alongside their delicious iced chai tea and house-made Brazilian cheese bread.

Google
Carioca bowls is the best, most authentic acai ever, and the cheese bread is outstanding. The atmosphere is original, inviting and with just enough funky. Cozy to eat there instead of taking out!

Yelp
I've come here two times since I've discovered it on TikTok and absolutely love it. There's much more seating outside (which is perfect for the summer and sunnier days, although not the best for rainy days), however, there's still plenty of seating inside too! The cafe is brightly colored and gives off a very fun, casual vibe. The first time I went, I made my own bowl. However, after trying my friends' already curated bowls (ie. the carioca), I decided to do the same when I went my second time--and I highly recommend doing the same if you don't have any strong preference. The pre-curated bowls are so filling. They have great portions and the toppings match so well with the blends they provide. I loved all the toppings and the different blends they offered. This is such a light, but filling way to start your day and I think it's the best acai spot in Portland.

Yelp
So good! The acai is very fresh and didn't have any added sugar like most places. The acai is sustainably sourced based on the information they had on each table. The location is very cute they have sooo much seating! I wish they were open later because I would totally come by later in the day and hang out. It was very quiet with seating indoors and outdoors. I built out two bowls and the total was $23.

Yelp
Excellent açaí bowls. Pick from their list of favorites or build your own. They also offer smoothies, avocado toast, Brazilian cheese bread and drinks. Abundant seating inside and out.
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
The cheese puff rolls are so addicting good. They are chewy and I love that texture. The açaí bowls are topped with fresh fruit. The medium bowl is on the small side. Half of the bowl is placed the smoothie, the other half is the granola. Most people don't know that there aren't fresh açaí in the US - all acai bowls are made from frozen ingredients. This place also have coffees and tea available. Service is good. The ambience is very down to earth with lots of wood furniture, suitable for the tropical field. Good amount if seats and natural lighting.

Yelp
What a cute spot (it looks like a house) to get a refreshing and filling açaí bowl. I had a great experience with the staff and the food was delicious. One medio bowl was just the right amount for me. The Brazilian cheese balls are a MUST have here. A nice pairing with the bowl and they also have vegan options as well for the ball.
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
There's no more sugar free/pure açaí, such a bummer. Otherwise this is a really great establishment, and was one of my favorites in the city. Service is always great and the shop is plant-filled and offers ample seating.

Yelp
I'm a fan of this shop and have been for years, as you can see by previous review from 3 years ago. They do açai bowls right and the location is pretty neat too. I stopped by recently for their 7th anniversary - they were giving out free bowls to the first 25 people in line that day and doing discounts and giveaways all day. They post promotions like this on occasion on their social media - worth following to find out what they've got going on. My go-to order has changed since I last left a review, and my appreciation for açaí has grown, though the toppings are still delicious. I usually now go for their signature Carioca bowl. If it's good enough to be named after the place, or vice versa, then it's good enough for me. Like most things, costs have increased over the years. Right now their "medio" size bowls range from $10-12, and the "grande" size from $13-15. I also really enjoy their Brazilian cheese bread. It's only $1.50 for one, or $8 for six. They have a second location in Slabtown, but I've only been to this Alberta St location. I still find it as charming as ever, with the many plants and the great outdoor seating.

Yelp
I don't think I ever had an actual açaí bowl and wow, I want more!! Very impressed with the fresh toppings and how yummy the rio blend açaí was. Service was great - I loved the vibe of the cafe and the music that was playing; I would love to come here on a sunny day and enjoy a bowl out in their outdoor seating area. Highly Recommend!

Yelp
I'm always on the search for acai spots and this one was a good one! I got the Carioca acai bowl ($10), cheese breads ($1.50/ea), & hot housemade chai ($5). The texture of the cheese breads were a surprise to me. I was imagining it being similar to a cheese bagel, but this one was almost like a mochi/Vietnamese honeycomb cake. I tried the traditional and vegan breads. I really liked it! The vegan one had an Indian flavor to it. I got a carioca bowl ($10 medio) that came with the classic rio blend with granola, strawberries, blueberries, and sliced banana. The fruits tasted really fresh and delicious together paired with the acai. The medio size was enough for me and this breakfast was really satisfying. I'd come back again when I'm craving for an acai bowl!

Yelp
Cute açaí bowl place! Their bowls are delicious and fairly large! Their fruit ingredients are really fresh too. Their cheesy bread too is a fun and delicious snack to try out! Speaking of the interior it's really cozy with a small dining area that's decorated with lots of plants! They even come bring out the açaí bowls to you when you eat in. I would recommend you come check it out!

Yelp
We were HUNGRY....and ended up waiting an hour and a half to get our bowls. Poor girls. There were only 2 workers and we went behind this couple who ordered everything on the menu basically. It was like a $100+ order. After the couple got their order...one of them dropped it...DROPPED IT. So guess what the girls had to do? Remake the order. We waited...and waited. When we finally got our bowls, the girl apologized and said we could get a discount on our next visit. The bowls were delicious and fresh...but there should be a different method to help the employees and be able to serve customers. I definitely recommend trying this place out...if it's a slow afternoon. The inside and outside are both beautiful. Plenty of places to sit and eat!

Yelp
Delightful new discovery, and we cannot wait to return in the spring as we can imagine this place turns from great to magical with the large courtyard full of plants and greenery right in urban Portland. Perfect texture on acai bowl with fresh and flavorful fruit. Dining in? Enjoy sustainable ceramic bowls and wooden spoons. Inside feels like you've stepped into a tropical paradise. Brazilian bites have more pizazz than anything you'd buy at the store and served fresh and hot. Look forward to returning.

Yelp
Fast and nice service. Good bowls, I recommend getting the yogi one with peanut butter. Loved that they have a large patio so we could bring our dog
google avatar

Yelp
I got their Carioca Bowl, which was delicious! Generous amount of fruit toppings. Their cheese bread was good. I like that they also have a vegan option. Staff are super friendly and helpful with describing the menu. The interior is cute with lots of plants.

Yelp
I had stop eating this bowl to write this review. I've never been more satisfied with a $20 food purchase. Hell yeah

Yelp
I came to this restaurant with an empty stomach and decent expectations. I am walking away with room for dessert. We walked in and were met by a friendly gentleman who wasted no time in asking us how we were. A casual look at the menu showed a few different açaí bowl options, along with some warm bowl options. I chose the Carioca Bowl (pictured) and had some Brazilian Cheese Bread on the side. We sat down and enjoyed the friendly and very cozy atmosphere. The environment was very much what you would expect from a Brazilian Açaí café. We received our food within around 10 minutes, not too long of a wait. After thoroughly mixing the bowl, I was able to enjoy my meal. The taste wasn't quite as flavorful as I am used to in typical açaí bowls, but it was still very prominent. Overall, Carioca Bowl makes for a wonderful date spot, or a fun family summer treat.
google avatar

Yelp
What a better way to start off your day than a refreshing, satisfying açaí bowl? Or açaí banana bread? Or açaí cookies? I love starting my days off clean, healthy and Carioca bowls offers just that, plus a dash of positivity! This cute local spot offers an approachable format to the famous superfood açaí in many formats with delicious results! There are so many bowls for different needs, tastes, that are offered in different sizes. Even sugar free options for people like me. The smell of the cheese bread baking is out of this world delicious! So you might as well get a couple - you won't be disappointed. Plus, parking is easy and the prices are reasonable. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should!

Yelp
Cool staff and great outdoor seating space. I think if it's too cold or rainy inside would be a little overwhelming to sit in tho. It was quite loud the day I was there. The bowls were excellent and the fruit was fresh.

Yelp
I was craving an Açaí bowl this morning and found this store via Google. I got the Ultra bowl - it is wonderfully refreshing and packs a lot in it. I also got one Pao de Queijo, the Brazilian corn bread. Had never had these before. They are so good - ordered a few more to go. The place - both outside and inside, is really nice. Given the heat, I decided to grab a table in their yoga room. Sat in the AC, and worked away for an hour. It is a very tranquil place.
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
I love Açaí bowls and this is currently my go-to spot in Portland. They have a variety of bowl blends and I have never been disappointed with any bowl that I have gotten from here. They use quality ingredients which I appreciate. this bowl is the Yogi bowl with a half-and-half blend of Ipa: Protein Packed and Pure: Cleansing. Lately, I have been using Yelp to place my order for to-go and it's always ready and looking beautiful when I pick it up. Staff are always helpful and friendly. Love this place!

Teresa D.

Yelp
Food is fresh, service is friendly, and prices are good. The place is clean, bright, and cheerful. We had the Carioca Bowl and avocado toast: delicious!
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The bowls were good but the superfood smoothie was expensive and didn't taste good. It was the worst smoothie I've ever had. Customers should be warned that they don't taste good although it's healthy.

Noel H.

Yelp
Great acai bowls. Never open ... even when it says you're open online: Not open. It's sad.
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
Was craving acai bowl & stumbled upon this cute little spot at the corner when approaching. I ordered a yogi with a mixture of both rio and pure. I have no idea what my friends ordered. But either way... they were delicious! The presentation was also super cute. This is perfect if you're craving something refreshing and healthy.

Yelp
Really like this place! It's a great place to kick off your day. We were about to embark on a long day of hiking so we wanted something that wouldn't make us feel too sluggish. Carioca bowls was the perfect choice! Their portions are really good and I love that they're connected to a yoga studio and have outdoor seating! Their extensive toppings list was also impressive! I ended up getting peanut butter, blueberries and blackberries as my toppings and they turned it into such a beautiful bowl. Would definitely return!
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Great stop for breakfast, I'd recommend getting their specialty bowls since the original is very basic and leaves u wanting something more. Strange that forks are all in the same basket for everyone to reach and touch and not provided individually with takeout.
google avatar

Yelp
Got together this week with a girlfriend to celebrate her birthday and Carioca was our destination. Hats off to the staff, I brought in a cupcake and asked if they could accommodate a surprise delivery of it when my friend arrived. The guy working the counter was game on! Totally got what I was trying to do, took the cupcake, swirled some goodness around it, lit the candle and delivered it when my friend arrived. We added a Rio bowl to the celebration. Acai with strawberries and blackberries and other goodness, it was delish! Everything was so fresh and tasty. Thank you Carioca and our helper with the blue eyes (sorry for not getting your name) for making this a great celebration!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Prices are a bit much, but it is a lot of food! Regular sized bowl comes with a lot of toppings plus 2 extra you get to add. The smoothy part is thick and creamy! A lot of flavor, even with the banana added in, it taste like açaí! The added fruit on top is ripe and fresh. Try the cheesy bread!! It's like Mochi but in bread food and cheesy. I've only tried the IPA so far.. but I've had it so many times cuz it's so delicious I haven't tried anything else yet
google avatar

Rossalyn O.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for Açaí bowls in Portland! They have amazing Açaí bowls and other goodies. I got to try out the Copacabana -- their Carioca Blend with Coconut Cream and Coconut Milk, topped with Coconut Oil, I also added Strawberries, Blueberries and Almond Butter. I also got the Brazilian Cheese Bread and Coconut Water! The Copacabana bowl is super refreshing! It was more creamier then their original Carioca Bowl. The Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream just worked perfectly and it wasn't overpowering. You might be reading this and saw Coconut Oil, but you can not taste it at all! I definitely recommend getting add a nut butter on your Açaí bowl, it definitely brought all the ingredients and flavors together.

Yelp
Such a cool location for a little restaurant! This Brazilian acai place is located in Alberta St, Portland, OR. I love visiting Alberta because of all the fun shops and coffee places. It looks like Carioca Bowls has two locations, one in Alberta and the other in NW 21st Ave. The nearest one to my house is the Alberta one and I really liked their decor and set up! It was super cute. Didn't take pictures of the place because it was pouring when I got there. I called in for my order and I picked a half bowl of the Tropicalia bowl with blueberries and raspberries for my added toppings. When I picked it up, they told me they added two free cheese breads to my order, which was super sweet of them! I was actually thinking about ordering cheese bread before I got there so it's like they read my mind. My bowl was SO good! It was my first time trying out a Brazilian acai bowl and I absolutely loved every little morsel! It's addictive! Every mouthful was packed full of flavor and punch. The acai had a refreshing aftertaste to it, too. Especially with the added berries. It all just came together and delighted your tastebuds to the highest degree. I could even taste a hint of chocolate in the acai - so good! I am hooked. The half bowl was a great size too and filling, and would make for an especially nutritious breakfast option. I will DEFINITELY be coming back for more!
google avatar

Morgan F.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The prices are a great value for what you get and I loved all the topping options. My acai bowl was delicious and just the right amount of food for a nutritious breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Love Carioca Bowls. They have some of the healthiest meals that I've discovered in Portland. Mostly vegan options, but they have vegetarian, too, for those not ready to give up completely on animal products like dairy. Their açaí bowls are their centerpiece and you can customize them as needed. They give you two free toppings along with inexpensive add-ons. Their avocado toast is definitely worth it. They do add their secret special vegan sauce to it, which I could live without. It was still really good and an interesting twist on this tasty trend. It tasted like a type of mustard, but it's not. Their Yerba mate is as good as it gets. I haven't tried their coffee or chai. They do get a prepackaged chai power mix, which is disappointing, but then I remember they put all of their focus into their meals. I haven't been here for lunch so haven't been able to try their other dishes. If they are as good as their açaí bowls, then they are excellent and about as wholesome as you can get.
google avatar

Yelp
I was really in the mood for an acai bowl or something fresh and fruity after breakfast at Screen door. So I yelped acai bowls and this was the first place that popped up. We made our way to Alberta street and I ordered a Tropicalia bowl - açaí mixed with mango, pineapple and raw coco water to go. I picked blueberry and blackberry as my free topping and choose to add "dragon fruit" as my premium topping for $1. My blackberries were cut (maybe in half) and not whole, but present. Blueberries were good, but a little tart. Bananas and granola were added which was nice, but I didn't see any dragonfruit (unless it was blended in or smooshed / liquid form. I'm not a huge fan of bananas, but I didn't know they were added until I left the place since I got my bowl to go. I was kinda bummed bc dragonfruit was the only thing I wanted for sure, but maybe I misunderstood when I saw it on the topping menu... I'd probably come back and give it another chance and order my bowl "for here" in the future, but we were on our way out / in a hurry this time around. A bit of a long wait for one bowl, but it was around noon and they had some people dining in. Bathroom was neat and clean which was nice, WiFi is offered and free water. Adjacent to a yoga studio which is kinda neat. Awesome outdoor seating and indoor seating with plants everywhere! The decor was cute and earthy.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
This is my jaaaaaam. I don't know why, but unlike Moberi, I feel like I get my money's worth here. I think it's the ability to customize my bowl with the toppings rather than have a prefixed item. I usually go for the classic Carioca bowl and add the two free toppings of dark cherries and peanut butter. A small is absolutely filling and I'm always satisfied. Not only are there açaí bowls, but they also have savory bowls. I need to try them. I always just stick with what I've loved and it's hard to veer away from that. Let's make that a 2020 goal?
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
Wasn't super impressed with my bowl because I expected a beautiful bowl with blueberries and strawberries etc... but they're blended in. Also the figs are dried figs, sort of a disappointment that I wished they outlined. It's also quite expensive for what you're paying. I did enjoy the patio and the yogi/health-conscious vibe. It rings very Portland to me. Nice place to hang out with friends but based on the bowl itself, I've had better elsewhere.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Perfect spot to grab a healthy meal, especially on a warm, sunny day. Best spot for açaí bowls in town!
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
This place has been (for over four years) and will remain one of my favorite places in Portland. Stellar service every time. Ambiance is calm but friendly. Carioca bowl is outstanding every single time. The thing I love most about this place is that their acai bowls can actually leave you feeling like you just had some delicious healthy whole food. While I have been to many other places that I have tried delicious acai bowls, this place is always my staple because it actually tastes yummy and healthful (not too sweet)! Also endless topping choices so you will never get bored. Pro tip: get the vegan brazialian bites
google avatar

Bodie P.

Yelp
Wow-these bowls pack a full delicious punch and more. I am not sure of all the in's and out's of either their sweet or savory bowls but I really like what they are doing. I ate both types of bowls through out my Sunday and enjoyed both very much. Thank you Carioca

Hannah L.

Yelp
Mediocre. Solid bowl but if you're like us and have traveled the country these bowls lack popping flavors and anything unique. Shouldn't be rated so high.
google avatar

Gina A.

Yelp
Overwhelmingly a lot of options, but workers are super friendly to help you pick out something to order. I went with the original carioca bowls and was not disappointed. Their toppings are fresh and plenty to choose from. I luckily beat the rush in, but there's also many seats both indoor and outdoor. Love the vibrant decor and plants! Another plus: they might have some fresh fruit to try upon request so do take note of that!
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
Ahhh my favorite spot for açaí bowls. they are generous with the toppings and always fresh. The crew is always pleasant, as well. This time I got one of the original bowls. My most recent times Igor the oatmeal. Both were very filling. I definitely only need a half order. Ps they have Kyla Kombucha available!
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
I had had my eye on this spot for a while before I finally made time to stop in. Having no idea what to expect, and it was a rear experience. After voicing my first time status, I was really pleased to find that the folks working there were so willing to give me pointers on how ordering worked that really helped. I ended up with a delicious bowl to fill my belly. Over all, great experience, delicious food. The interior decor of this spot does a great job of avoiding the stereotypes of hipster spots by using lots of vibrant colors.

Camie R.

Yelp
Everytime I come home I have to visit this place. Really delicious and fresh açaí bowls, the avacado toast is amazing too!

Michael C.

Yelp
Bowl was amazing...one of the best I ever had. Until a massive piece of hair came up in the middle of the bowl
google avatar

Maeghan E.

Yelp
Another Portland staple! Such good smoothie bowls and still same great service even during covid. The avocado toast is so so good too. Don't underestimate the large size.. a half will do the trick I promise lol
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, this is my new favorite açaí bowl business in Portland! If I lived closer to Alberta I would probably end up spending a fortune at Carioca Bowls! I visited on a Thursday afternoon right around when they were about to close. I have heard they can get crazy busy during peak breakfast times so I tried to pick a time they might not be as busy. However, considering Carioca was closing in 30 minutes, there were still quite a few people ordering bowls and sitting in the restaurant. Obviously this is a popular spot. I ordered the full Ipanema bowl. I like that their basic bowls come with granola and bananas as well as an option of 2 other toppings. Since the Ipanema is a speciality bowl it also ended up being topped with peanut butter. I didn't end up wanting the peanut butter on top, as peanut butter is already blended into the base so the person helping me allowed me to pick an extra toppings to substitute! I appreciated that because normally you get charged extra for anything else you want to add on at other açaí bowl restaurants. In terms of the flavor of the bowl, the granola was delicious and the açaí tasted amazing blended with the peanut butter! The bowl wasn't too sweet and all the flavors were wonderfully complimentary. I have had a ton of açaí bowls around Portland and this one blew the rest out of the water! I will definitely be a returning customer!

Yelp
Healthy and nutritional food which tastes really good. Interior looks clean and service was helpful. Free yoga studio for donations. Everything is organic and fresh. Half Carioca Bowl [$6] was delicious. Got it with blueberries and strawberries with bee pollen. I was satisfied with the taste. But the price and portion was bleh. Healthy food is usually more expensive but still. It was good and made me want more. It comes with the acai, granola, and bananas. Got the special smoothie [$6] Da Kitchen Sink. Its like the bowls without the granola. It was really good, like a more healthy jamba juice. It had all kinds of berries and healthy goodness. I might be wrong, but I think a smoothie is just the bowls blended? Overall, it is a great place to go to try to be healthy and get some good nutrients inside your body.
google avatar

Rebecca K.

Yelp
A little pricy, but delicious spot to get some healthy food! I was craving an Açaí bowl and Carioca delivered! They have multiple mixes to choose from and then you get to pick your toppings. I chose the option to get two flavors so I could sample more of the menu. To be honest neither flavor really differed from the other. But that was fine with me because it still tasted incredible. The serving size is also massive. I was hungry and was convinced I could take on a full size. Try as I might I had to concede defeat and put about a third of it in the freezer. I definitely would have been fine with a half bowl! The staff are super helpful and friendly. I will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Açaí bowls are delish! A healthy twist on desert if you're in the area! They also have a wonderful community space with sound bowl and yoga events including some led by the co-owner. Check them out!

Yelp
We got the special peanut butter bowl, but we couldn't taste the peanut butter in it. The blueberries on top were defrosted frozen berries so they were mushy and shriveled. In a way, I'm glad acai bowls in Portland aren't as good as the ones we have in Socal. No need to leave to get my fix!
