London’s New Restaurant Openings - London - The Infatuation

"We wait ages for decent pizza in London and then approximately 174 of them come at once. Carmela’s in Islington will be under particular scrutiny, though, as it’s been opened by the Ugly Dumpling founder and the bloggers behind Bite Twice Food Reviews—a social media account that critiques pizza across the city. Expect New York-style pies and a lot of chat about ‘the integrity of the base’." - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

I walked up on Sunday afternoon, there was no queue, but inside no tables were empty and the place was a hive of energy and activity. Smiles all round, staff and customers, clearly enjoying it, although the team have been going flat out since opening 3 days ago. I had come for takeout and that is what I had: the fennel sausage pizza which I ate outside the Town Hall. There was a lovely snap and crispiness to the base, the topping was stable and did not slide off when I folded a slice to eat. The sausage was nice it had a good fennel flavour to it, not overpowering on the aniseed front, the tomato, sauce and cheese blend were great, not too much cheese and evenly distributed (as was the sausage, maybe a little more sausage wouldn’t hurt). The edge was just the right size, not over inflated or too wide. The pizza was cut evenly and sliced through properly so the slices were easy to separate. Overall very tasty 8/10. There was a discount today so it cost me £11 for 12” pizza. Below is a shot of the eat in menu, I think the take out is cheaper and also in this phase there is a 30% discount. A napkin with takeout would also help, though the pizza itself was not a messy meal and I got away with it!!

Believe the hype and stick out the queue. The tomato tonnato sauce is so good we ordered an extra portion and obviously get the vodka pizza. Plus we tried the dark rosé after being recommended it... Was a bit sceptical but it was totally delicious

Still can’t get over how good that vodka pizza is. An amazing experience at a beautiful restaurant. The vibes are immaculate - the food even better. I had two negronis- but could have easily ordered ten.

This new pizzeria is having a soft launch for now with a 30% discount. The menu might change but it is a short menu, which makes choosing easier. Beautiful decor and soft jazz classics were my first impression upon entering. I decided to make it simple for my first visit as this is how I decide if the place is good as it is easy to muck up a simple dish. I ordered a Negroni, which was excellent and the vodka tomato pizza. The pizza is thin crust and slightly chewy, which indicated to me that the base was made with good quality ingredients. The vodka tomato sauce was smooth and rich. Absolutely first class. I would have loved to have sampled the tiramisu but it was not on today's menu. Although Uppet Street, Islington is awash with pizzerias, Carmela's offers something special, so do try them out.

The best pizza I've had, served by very friendly staff plus has the most cosy and rustic interior of any place on this high street. Highly recommend
