Where to Find Non-Chain Drive-Thru Food in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"At drive-thru-only Don Juan, the menu is written on the side of the building, and their tacos, at $1.25 a pop, are hard to beat. Among the choices are carne asada, al pastor, chicharron, and lengua." - Delia Jo Ramsey

Google
Amazing spot, never disappoints for straight forward, well seasoned, never dried out tacos ✨♥️ this is my go to taco spot in Madison!! Always quick and consistent

Craig Hinkle

Google
You don't go for the atmosphere, you go for the amazing tacos and that awesome green sauce. The tacos here are so much better than the other mexican restaurants. Taco tuesday is $1 tacos.

Shekima Cropes

Google
Best lil taco stand in Madison. The only thing better than the $2 tacos is the house made green sauce. It's takeout only but the drive thru service was quick.

Gretchen Reed

Google
Awesome tacos at a very reasonable price! Very authentic with cilantro and onions and the hot sauce is always right on! Love the taco Tuesday deal;

Dreambox

Google
This is my stop for dinner or lunch at least once a week, the protein in the tacos are always seasoned well, and moist, service is always quick. Favorite spot in Madison!!

Google
Got takeout and looks like they are changing things. They changed putting it on plates, this made all the tacos to move around. The chorizo ended up in the barbacoa. Flavors were missing the point too. Really liked this place but missed the mark this time 😔

Gavin

Google
Very tasty, hot, savory, cooked to order, authentic tacos with our favorite being the carnitas! They are served with two sauces. a pepper and some small vegetables. They have large cold bottled Mexican coke which they can open if you do not have a bottle opener. The chicken taco authentico’s is our second favorite. They have a special price on their tacos on Tuesday. We have been coming here since they were located on Nolensville Road In Nashville.

Google
If I could give this place a zero star I would. They gave me an entire order that was not mine. I called and they kept hanging up on me before I could even let them know what my issue was. Then after a woman and man were very rude and said they could not do anything about it, and would not admit their error. This place is horrible service and probably horrible food.

Yelp
Talk about taco Tuesday! If you are looking for authentic street tacos, this is the spot. The tacos are filled with flavors and packed with meat so definitely a good bang for your buck. I got carne asada tacos - great flavors and most importantly, all the meats taste fresh. For toppings, they add onions and cilantro to the tacos. They also gave us a green hot sauce, which was hot, but good to drizzle over the tacos. Lots of options - They have a lot of different types of tacos like al pastor, chorizo, chicken, lengua (beef tongue), carnitas, tripe (tripe), Barbacoa, and more. The menu also has burritos, tortes, quesadillas, which are huge portions. This place is mainly a drive-thru to-go spot where you order at one window and pick it up at another window. However, they have 2-3 picnic tables to sit at but it is outdoors, so not a lot of seating nor did I see people sit there and eat, but the option is there.

Yelp
A quick point of order: This review was/is based upon the Nolensville Road location. When it comes to Madison, I don't know her. I never know what to call this section of Nolensville Road. I *think* it's Radnor but don't hold me to it. I used to be a neighborhood nerd. Back when this city had more locals/long-term residents, I think neighborhoods mattered more. Now people call anything anything and... excuse me. I have a cloud to shake my fist at. Where were we? Tacos. Yes, I'd passed this stand (you have too) many many times while speeding past on Nolensville. 'Why check out another taco shop when I already have one*?' Because this spot is the truth! At the time I came here, there weren't that many reviews but the ones that were there were fire. So, on a warm early summer Friday evening, I made it a point to get tacos. Parking was a struggle. The lot was unevenly paved and, as people are wont to do, humans straggled all over the place. After hovering for a while, I decided to park and take my chances. I walked up to the counter and, as shacks are wont to do, overly prescriptive customer service wasn't a thing. Order, pay, move to the right. Ordering was a bilingual undertaking but I speak enough Spanish that I wasn't intimidated. Cash is king so pay with paper and keep it moving. The place was moderately busy and only one man was on the grill so it took a little time to get my food. By the time my six (!) tacos were ready, the young guy at the register hooked me up with 'a lot' of green sauce. 'You're going to want it.' I drove home, plated my bounty and got to work. First off, fire! Everything tasted fresh, seasoned, DIFFERENT, and appropriately textured. I ordered the pollo, asada, carnitas, barbacoa, chorizo, and pastor tacos. There wasn't a bad one in the bunch. All quality meat -- and all made even better by that green sauce. He was right: I wanted it on every taco. Hands down, these were some of the best tacos I'd ever had. It makes sense: when you have a green, white and red beacon off of one of the busiest thoroughfares in the metro, you need to have your act together. Five stars. Easy. *Many more than one but who's counting?

Yelp
Hands down most authentic Mexican spot in Nashville. Order at the window, sit at one of the picnic tables and enjoy fresh cooked food. This is not one of those strip mall pre cooked spots! Everything is cooked fresh down to the chips.

Yelp
Drive thru taco shop. Carne asada burrito and horchata were solid. Food came out quickly. Would recommend!

Trevor W.

Yelp
This has been my go to spot for 10 years now. I absolutely love this place. Steak burrito is what I almost always get. Sopes are also great. Actually everything is good.

Yelp
Was in the mood for some authentic tacos thanks to my recent trip to Mexico. I searched Yelp and this was a recommended place near me (minutes away)! So glad I tried this place out because the food was cheap and delicious! For $20, my boyfriend and I shared 6 tacos, a burrito, and 2 quesadillas with rice. Everything tasted so good! My tacos were el pastor, which I highly recommend. Be warned, they give you a small green sauce to go with your food and it is SPICY. I don't like spicy stuff so I left mine untouched. My boyfriend really liked the quesadilla, which was large and filling. Needless to say, we found our new favorite taco spot!

Yelp
I was really craving true street tacos after work, and decided to swing by here to check it out. I've tried Baja Burrito and thought it wasn't really authentic, so I decided to venture off the beaten path about a mile away for hopefully better food. The prices were extraordinarily cheap, which was a great sign. I paid $1.39/taco for pickup, and they gave me a bunch of salsas in the bag for free. I also ordered an asada burrito to try, out of curiosity. Y'all. This is the BEST and most authentic Mexican food I have tried in Nashville. And you can NOT beat the prices. The food had great flavor, the salsa packed some heat, and it was all simply delicious. Like most authentic street food places, I got a couple of fatty/gristly pieces in my asada, but who cares? When you ask for street tacos, you know what you're in for. On top of everything else, the staff were friendly and sweet. If you check this place out, you will not be disappointed! I would definitely come back here in a heartbeat, especially if I'm in need of good food when drunk or hungover!

Yelp
Solid place for your next hole-in-the-wall taco shop adventure. Just right off of Nolensville Pike and Thompson Lane, this little taco shack is tucked away in a little side street/alley that has plenty to offer. Been craving tacos and have been wanting to try a torta for the longest time, and thus the adventure begins. Ordered one of their chorizo tacos and a barbacoa torta (which I had no clue it would be so big) and went back to my dorm to eat them. They were still warm and fresh even after a 15 minute drive and were so freakin good. Like I said, unbeknownst to me I didn't realize how large these tortas would be and the flavor was just as big. Their barbacoa is completely melt-in-your-mouth aesthetic and a total hit. Definitely try out their tortas.

Yelp
This place felt very authentic especially the area it was in and had high hopes. The tacos options were pretty good and tried the asada, carnitas and buche (pork stomach) with some horchata for wash it all down. When I received my food it looked amazing and couldn't wait to dig in. The asada was just good and tasted freshly cooked. However, I like when my asada taste like it came from a grill as I like those smoky notes but overall it was just good The carnitas was just pulled pork but was very juicy and complimented well with the verde salsa. The buche was my fav of all three. I usually love lengua(cow tongue) and tripe but they usually have an up charge on those tacos so I only get on occasion. I never had buche in taco form but it was something I would like to have on occasion now. Horchata was alright but I've had better ones (very creamy). If you aren't afraid to try things like that I would definitely recommend this place. I would comeback here and get the buche again and maybe try the pastor.

Yelp
Placed a doordash order & it was confirmed. I get there and the employee hands me her phone w the manager to tell me they are no longer using doordash. The lady closes the window and ignored me when I try to play an order with a CC. Prob wont be back :(
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered a whole smoked chicken and some sides through grubhub. The sides came but not the chicken. Never got my credit or refund. Won't be going back.

Yelp
Holy shhh! This place is amazing. It's my favorite restaurant in the area so far. Just insanely delicious tacos. That green sauce omg! So grateful this place exists!!!

Yelp
Delicious, cheap tacos and friendly people! Definitely check it out!

Yelp
We love to go to Lizs its local for one thing and the food is always great! Wevlike to support Family owned businesses.

Yelp
I was a little disappointed by my experience here. I ordered three tacos: one pastor, one carnitas, and one asada. I found the meat in all three pretty dry, and the tortillas didn't seem fresh and were also dry/burnt. Out of the three that I ordered, I think the pastor was my favorite and it was well-seasoned. The other two were just flat-out dry, flavorless, and just not really anything special. Plus, there was a BONE in my asada taco! The one decent thing about this place is that there's seating. There's a bench for outdoor seating but there's also a separate, indoor seating area. It seems like there's an air conditioner in the indoor seating area but it kind of just blows warm air into the room. While it's a bit dingy and doesn't seem to be the most sanitary facility, I'm sure it's fine if you just need a quick seat so you don't spill food all over your car. This place is just average in my opinion (if not slightly below), so if you're looking for the best tacos in Nashville, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Yelp
This place just moved to Madison where dos sisters used to be and it is AMAZING. incredible authentic tacos. I got the barbacoa, carnitas and chorizo. Chorizo was a little salty but still great. Three tacos for $6. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Outstanding, delicious, friendly- would absolutely recommend and eat here again. We got steak and chicken tacos and loved both!
google avatar

Ting W.

Yelp
Quick, cheap, and authentic! The three things that you want when it comes to good tacos. They have really quick service, so you can stop by and grab a bite and eat them right away. They have a small building aside from the bridling for larger groups and patio seating too. You can get tacos for $1.25 and if you're vegetarian you can customize by telling them what you want.

Daja J.

Yelp
I do NOT recommend they charged me 1.00 for hard chips 50 cents for a very small cup of salsa & 3.00 dollars for the cheese the salsa was Walmart salsa that's in a jar!!! The cheese was very cold the tacos not good & cold I was so upset about this restaurant
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Don't let the looks fool you. Amazing street tacos. We had the carnitas, al pastor, and barbacoa tacos. They were all amazing. Very inexpensive, great service, 5/5.
google avatar

Abhishek J.

Yelp
My now go to spot whenever I'm craving some cheap, quick, and delicious tacos. Love their creamy green salsa.

Amanda H.

Yelp
Best and Most Authentic Mexican food in town!! Absolutely love their tacos and queso chorizo.
google avatar

Linda G.

Yelp
I ordered barbacoa and lengua tacos. I have to say they were pretty tasteless. First off they both tasted the same, so maybe there was a problem in translation, but I don't think so. It was basically shredded beef with some bland red sauce. The saving grace was the salsa that came out afterwards. I had to question it when the staff brought it out because it looked like white mayonnaise sauce. But it was delicious, and really hot. My partner ordered the steak plate. That dish was really good. Flavorful rice and beans, marinated thinly sliced steak, and fresh tacos.

Hanh N.

Yelp
Finally found my authentic taco spot! I just moved to Nashville from Southern California & I definitely had tacos at least once a week. Honestly, never judge a book by its cover. They have the best tacos. We ordered 10 carne asada tacos, 5 pollo tacos, 3 pastor tacos, 1 lengua taco, and 1 chicharron taco. All were good, especially with their green creamy salsa (medium heat), which comes with the tacos. I tend to find places with tacos under $2 tend to have the best authentic tacos, in my opinion. Great reasonable service for a drive-thru. We ordered a total of 20 tacos so they asked us to pull forward and wait. Took about 5-10 mins for our food to be ready. Pretty good since there were 4 other cars behind me.
google avatar

Megan W.

Yelp
So delicious! And the prices are amazing. You need to try the lengua tacos and the cheese dip is good as well
google avatar

Jimmy P.

Yelp
This place is a literal hole in the wall -- you order at a window of a cinder block wall, and the menu is painted on the wall just to the right. I'm pretty sure the family who runs the restaurant lives right above it. ...All promising signs pointing to dank tacos. And indeed they were dank. Not just best asada in Nashville, I would venture to say best tacos in there city. The first time I came here, the food was so good I placed another order to go. Edit: just went back today, and apparently an attorney called Ivan Lopez is the proprietor of the second floor? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tacos were excellent as usual
google avatar

Bailey M.

Yelp
You might fly past this place if you frequent the Nolensville Road area right near the Woodbine area of Nashville, but trust me when I say to swing by and grab some food here! My friend and I got 10 tacos so we could try all of the meats. My favorite by far were the pastor tacos, but you can't go wrong with any of them. This place is not only delicious but also affordable! Make it a plan to stop by here when you're in the area, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Great food, amazing prices, loved the outdoor seating, but most of all I loved the green sauce with the tacos

Yelp
Back in the day, I was a kickball player who had games every Sunday, rain or shine off Thompson Lane. Prior to my retirement, I visited this Mexican place a good deal, and remember it being pretty good. My job recently moved me from my favorite taco place off Murfreesboro Road, so I found myself here again this week, in dire need of the delicious authentic Mexican tacos that I so craved. It didn't disappoint. A few things that I love: - They take credit card. Yes. - That it is a drive-thru. I LOVE this. Super convenient when I want to grab some tacos during a busy day and hit the road. - The chorizo tacos. YES. I love that they are cooked very well, with the perfect amount of grease and flavor. - The sauces. Make sure to ask for a side of the red sauce, it does not normally come with it, so you need to ask for it in addition to your order. You are welcome. A few things I'm not a fan of: - Grilled onions cost extra. Look... the tacos are 1.25 each and should come with grilled onions. It's part of the tacos. I don't like that this is an extra charge. - I wasn't a huge fan of the carnitas taco. It was OK but didn't taste as fresh as I would have liked. Otherwise, I am a fan and will be back. I am a sucker for convenience, and am going to be enjoying this place for a long time to come.

Yelp
Hands down the best taco in town and their green sauce is out of this world. Extremely affordable and delicious! EDIT: Just had the burrito for the first time and it was superb! You seriously can't go wrong with anything at Don Juan!
google avatar

JohnMark C.

Yelp
Okay, so I'm having sort of a hard times putting words together at the moment on account of the taco/horchata-induced food coma I'm currently experiencing... Why people go and spend $5 on a specialty "craft" taco I will never understand... tacos here are $1.25 and quesadillas & burritos aren't much more! Get an authentic taste of Mexico and more bang for your buck here than anywhere else in Nashville (except maybe Taco Bell, which doesn't exactly count, nor compare!) Also, did I mention they have a drive-thru?! Personally, the chorizo tacos & a large horchata are my go-to's.

Austin S.

Yelp
Authentic. This word best describes Don Juans and is exactly what we've been looking for. My wife and I have been on a mission to find the best tacos in all of Nashville and since moving here over a month ago, Don Juans is the best. The corn tortillas were of good quality and the carne asada meat as well. I especially liked the flavoring on the barbacoa. I was so happy to find salsas that had a fresh flavor and a decent amount of spiciness in comparison to other places around Nashville. I know that there are trendy places like bartaco but places like that are not authentic and you are being foolish to pay more than $2 or $3 a taco. Don Juans keeps it genuine with the great quality, the price and the superb salsas. Please stop wasting your money on the inauthentic, overpriced tacos elsewhere in Nashville and go to Don Juans. My wife and I will certainly be repeat customers...My only suggestion is for the owners to invest in some better outdoor tables. I think sprucing up and investing in the outside would be more aesthetically pleasing for first impressions. But then again, I guess that's part of what makes Don Juans an amazing hidden gem. Can't wait to go back the next time and so glad to have finally found great tacos in Nashville!
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
Don Juan is almost a weekly stop for us. Their tacos and green sauce combination is always so amazing! You can't beat the price, convenience, and flavor here. My go to is always the pastor which comes with the occasional pineapple. If you're looking for a solid taqueria, come visit Don Juan!

Jordan H.

Yelp
I just recently moved from San Antonio to Nashville. My biggest fear of leaving South Texas was losing GOOD Mexican food. I have found my saving grace! Well done! My only complaint is the salsa (tastes like store bought Pace), homemade would be the cherry on the top for me!
google avatar

Shaun S.

Yelp
I know everyone has a different taste when it comes to food. I personally am not impressed with the food here. The service is personable. The seating accommodation is not appealing (a little grungy), nor comfortable (a little ramshackle). The grounds are unkempt and the parking area littered. The food doesn't suck, just seemed very watered down flavor wise. I'm taken back to the border at nearly every taco truck in Nashville but this place takes me back to my kitchen where I do a poor job recreating Mexican food either authentically or creatively. I went a year ago for tacos and menudo, last week for burrito. I'll have another go at the tacos and change this rating if I taste something different.
google avatar

Sara Beth G.

Yelp
My tastebuds just fireworked into pork, buttery soft bread, creamy sour cream, lettuce, cheese, and some green peppery avocado-y sauce. The torta is in diameter the size of my face and for 5.46 TOTAL, it's actually cheaper than Wendy's. I've always gotten the tacos and been really impressed but now I'm excited to go back and get everything on the menu. Sometimes the employees don't speak much English, sometimes they do. I like it. Go to Don Juan (not plural), you won't regret it. Updates make sure you don't go when the cooks are preparing themselves meals. Waited and waited and watched 2 other cooks walk by with their (delicious looking) food. They have their own clock I guess.
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
So good. Seriously, found this place on Yelp after the other place I was going to was closed. I don't live in Nashville but I knew I wanted tacos. This place has the best tacos I've had in the United States and they are so cheap. The people who work there are so nice and while it is very casual, it is very comfortable and SO GOOD. DO IT!!!
google avatar

Joshua V.

Yelp
I am originally from 25 minutes north of Mexico and let me tell you, these tacos are amazing.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Lets be honest here, from looking at the building, you might think the food would be on the sketchy side. The outdoor seating is under a carport next to the drive thru, the menu is painted on the side of the building and there is what appears to be a play area for kids fenced off with chicken wire. However, that has no bearing on the quality of the food. The food is great, reasonably priced and the green sauce they give you with your order is nothing short of fantabulous. If you happen to be there when they have the grills going, you'll think you have died and gone to heaven. Don't judge a book by its cover. Be brave, step out of your comfort zone, live a little for the love of... Just try it, you will be glad you did.
google avatar

Beth G.

Yelp
Went during the International Food crawl.they served street tacos and ran out of the carnitas. But the day was not to be lost. They ran inside and retrieved more. Awesome service. The menu board is right outside making it very easy stop and go. Not an easy find as it is along the crowded Nolensville Road area. Only had the tacos but would try more next visit. Would come almost everyday if i lived or worked closer. Loved the staff and the offerrings. Defintely a place to stop and try.

Yelp
TACO 'BOUT SATISFYING A CRAVING. Tacos are one of my top 5 favorite foods - dare I say that it might even be my most favorite food. When I moved to Nashville, I was disappointed that I couldn't find any hole in the wall AUTHENTIC street tacos like the ones I practically grew up around back in Dallas. Luckily my friend introduced me to Don Juan and I was SO SO SO happy. Where else can you get tacos for 1.25 each!? My first time there I tried the al pastor & the beef tacos - MY TUMMY WAS SO HAPPY. And so were my taste buds!! The pastor was spicy just the way I like it and the beef was tender & juicy. My only wish was that they would use corn tortillas instead of flour, but the quality of the meat was good enough for me to forget about that. Slather the tacos with some salsa verde and it's a party in your mouth! I'm super stoked to have found my go to taco place in Nashville - it's almost like being home :-)

Yelp
This place is comparable to Taqueria San Luis. It's pretty good, but not as good as some of the Mexican food trucks (roach coaches) available in Nashville. Overall the meat is more juicy than the meat at the Taqueria San Luis window. I ordered 4 items: chicken quesadilla and three tacos (chicharron, asada, and pastor). The chicken quesadilla is relatively similar to the one at Taqueria San Luis--relatively flavorless but juicy. The chicharron taco was a pleasant surprise because it's often not available at most Mexican places in Nashville. It was juicy and spicy, but had moderate flavor. The asada here is more juicy but less flavorful than the asada at Taqueria San Luis. And the pastor is juicy, more spicy than most places, but not as flavorful as the pastor found at food trucks. When I looked around me, I noticed a lot of non-Hispanic clientele. It's a decent joint that's better than most Mexican restaurants in Nashville but definitely not the best. I feel that the food items aren't quite flavorful, but try to make up by adding more spice than you would find at other establishments. I do appreciate the wider variety here than at San Luis or the delicious Mexican food trucks. 1 quesadilla ($5) + 3 tacos ($1) = $8.00.
google avatar

Pedro L.

Yelp
Yes and Yes. All these tacos are on point! My go to's are the Pastor and Lengua, but mix it up and try any of them. You can walk up or drive up to the window.
google avatar

Christi C.

Yelp
SO good. I had pastor tacos and rice and it was amazing. Highly recommend. Staff was also super nice.
google avatar

Fifi L.

Yelp
Mm mmm tamales! 24 hour notice required if getting more than 6! So far these are the best tamales and closest to East L.A. flavor that I'm used to eating. Rest of the food is ok but I'm a native Angeleno so my standards are high. Love those tamales!
google avatar

Kristy L.

Yelp
I'm fortunate to live around the corner from the place. These tacos are authentic street tacos and probably the best I've had in Nashville. You can get buche, birria, chicharones, al pastor....so many different types of meat. I love the avocado salsa they provide too. You do have to wait 5-10 mins in the drive through to get your food but it is well worth the wait. Love this place.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Amazing. 4.7 stars really. I've had several things from here at this point. My favorites are the tacos for sure. It's always refreshing to have a more authentic Mexican joint than what you typically have to deal with in most cities, especially in the south. Obviously they have a limited menu, but what they do serve, they nail perfectly. And, to top it off, the staff is always extremely polite and pleasant. And, it's super cheap to boot! This is one of my favorite lunch spots. I suggest you give it a shot if you're in the area.
google avatar

Brittany E.

Yelp
If you want the most authentic tacos in Nashville, this gem is the place to go! The prices and quality are unbeatable. I searched so hard just to find a taco place with the basics: onion, cilantro, corn tortillas. Don Juan is the best!
google avatar

Chelsea D.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in Nashville and I think I've been here more times than any other restaurant in town. Don't let the appearance scare you off and if you're lazy like me you can rejoice in the fact they even have a drive thru. First and foremost, order a large Horchata. If you've never had it you can thank me later for opening your world to this delicious drink. As far as food goes I stick with what I love and always get the chicken quesadillas which comes with rice. Ask for a side of the green sauce but be careful because it is very spicy so don't overload your dish with it without testing it first. I think the two things combined usually runs me about $8 so you can count on fresh delicious food, generous portion sizes for a very reasonable low price.

Callie C.

Yelp
After living in Texas I've grow accustomed to texmex, taco trucks and authentic Mexican. Since living in Tennessee/Kentucky for 8 years I've been searching for decent Mexican food. It's gotten to the point that I groan when anyone suggests a Mexican restaurant north of Dallas. But today...today I have found the real deal. The chicken tacos were amazing, I got chorizo hesitantly but I will order again next time. The rice was fluffy and delicious. The green salsa just spicy enough. It was quick, fairly priced, and has made my taco dreams come true. Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu.
