Before we begin, we must admit to the desolation of the Venezuelan food scene in Boston. We have several locations of Orinoco, Don Tequeño y Doña Arepa, a few others scattered about, and Carolicious. Options are indeed limited.
Carolicious, however, is a decent option, and the establishment appears to be doing good business within the fermented home of Aeronaut Brewing Company. The menu selection is reasonable--not terribly expansive, but also not tiny--and the prices are quite reasonable as well. With respect to the food, I can speak to several arepas and their tequeños, and that is all. While I feasted on a reina pepiada, I can also speak to their rumbera. Both were voluptuously stuffed with flavorful entrails, chicken salad and pork and cheese, respectively. I must admit that my entire party, myself included, was a bit perturbed by the texture (i.e. the crunchiness) of the arepa itself. Is this a function of the preparation? Of the flour (is it not Harina PAN)? Something else? Either way, the taste was fine, there was something just a little strange about it.
The tequeños were wonderful: the perfect texture and the ideal flavor, served with a succulent and unique basil sauce. Certainly the best tequeños I've found in the area (yes, I'm looking directly at you, Orinoco).
I will say, I am slightly unsettled by the negative reviews here: complaints about veganism, complaints about the establishment's work schedule. Perhaps better argued criticisms would be more compelling. I'm certainly not convinced.
Overall, I was not fully blown away into the atmosphere by the food and my experience, but I would certainly return and would not hesitate to recommend Carolicious for a satisfying arepa.
