12 D.C. Bars With Pool Tables | Eater DC

"As the name suggests, four pool tables are among the games available at this auto-themed sports bar in Ballston. There are also dozens of beers on tap with a focus on local picks and a sizable menu of bar appetizers and entrees. After a 20-year Arlington run, then four years in Fair Lakes, CarPool returned to a new Arlington space last year." - Travis Mitchell

Jinya Will Start Simmering Slow-Cooked Ramen in Ballston | Eater DC

"I'm glad CarPool is returning to Arlington after a four-year absence, moving into a 6,400-square-foot space formerly occupied by Bistro 1521; the barroom will revive gas-station stylings — big garage doors and vintage pumps — and offer billiards, darts, and other pub games, with drinks starting at 4 p.m." - Stephanie Carter

Iconic Sports Bar CarPool Will Make an Arlington Comeback This Fall | Eater DC

"Returning to Ballston this year, the beloved sports bar that opened in 1995 and spent two decades in Arlington before relocating to Fairfax in 2017 will move into 900 N. Glebe Road (a 6,382-square-foot space half a mile from its old outpost near the Ballston Metro). Owner Mark Handwerger promises the same billiards, pinball, and extensive draft-beer selection, and most of the vintage furniture is coming back though the pool and shuffleboard tables will be replaced after 25 years. The comfort-food menu will remain largely unchanged — no-frills bar food like burgers, chicken and waffles, and wings coated in mumbo sauce — while new additions include select in-house beers brewed off-site in partnership with Handwerger’s other Arlington venture, Board Room. Similar to the original location, the exterior will feature a large garage door that this time opens to a sizable outdoor patio, a feature Handwerger says suits post-COVID dining habits; despite many nearby bars, he’s confident CarPool will regain its longtime local following." - Kalina Newman

CarPool is a great spot for social networking and having a fun time with friends. I visited this place with a friend and really enjoyed the atmosphere. We tried their food, which was tasty, and spent the evening playing different games, including billiards/pool. Their game equipment is a bit old but still in good shape and fun to use. The vibe was lively, and the staff was welcoming. Definitely a place I’ll come back to again!

We used to go to this place back in the day when they were located on Fairfax Dr. behind Randolph Towers in Ballston. Mel took great care of us. She is the server with the mostest. She was super busy but continuously checked on us. Our quesadilla was so tasty. It was nice to save a few bucks by arriving for a happy hour, which is 5 to 7 p.m. It is a great place to come to play darts, pool etc. You will see us again, Mel and Carpool. Thanks so much.

Google
Great DC area dive bar! Service is amazing with a friendly staff!! This is an awesome place to hang out, have a drink, play some pinball, and have a good time ✌️

1st rate. Just had some drinks and hung out while it rained. Raj at the bar was the best, made a new friend!!!! Cold beer and a comfortable environment.

We really enjoyed this place. We had the wings, fried pickles, mozzarella sticks, and vanilla ice cream. The wings were great. Bartenders were really good. Great place to watch a game. I would definitely recommend this place.

Google
Night life is good here, great bar food and $2 darts all night one time flat fee. They also have pool tables, 4 to be exact. Food is reasonably priced for a late night place with no cover charge. Nice crowd but can get crazy quickly so definitely come with a group to be safe. Middle age to young crowd. Nachos are terrific for $10. Cheese fries are good but a little soggy. Other than that, restroom is clean, parking is plenty, bartender and service are cool. Minus one star for the "drunk" male crowd that makes it a little crazy. Oh and no healthy food whatsoever.

Google
Horrible establishment. Bartender towards the pool table incredibly rude. He was a heavier set male with a backwards hat treating a customers very poorly. He was cold and avoided us. Would not recommend. We were not disruptive but the bartender was mean the entire time. Around 1:40 am he had a horrible tone and attitude while yelling at is to tell us to leave despite the bar closes at 2 am. DO NOT GO.

Google
I arrived to pick up my food and was told to wait 2 minutes. I ordered a burger and nachos - I know that nachos get soggy, so I made sure to get there at the pick up time. When I got back to my location which was directly across the street. The nachos were clearly sitting for a VERY LONG time SOGGY and horrible . Why tell me to wait. SMH

Yelp
I loveeeee their fried pickles!!! Beers during happy hour are also insanely cheap. Bartenders are very friendly too :) Come through with coworkers, friends, family, everyone you know!!! The only thing is it definitely gets loud - especially when there's a game on.

Yelp
I recall this being next to the IHop before closing. Sounds like they've reopened again and rejuvenated to serve Arlington. There's plenty to like with the pool tables, darts, arcades, and the TVs showing sports galore to keep you plenty busy. Plenty of people frequent this for those kinds of gatherings, making this place perfect for company happy hours and birthday celebrations. Bar-wise they offer all your usual spirits with a decent beer draft selection. Not sure about the wine; I just stuck with my miller lites and vodka+sodas whenever I'm here. Food-wise, it's typical bar food. Nothing special or anything that stands our although they serve tator tots here which is an excellent snack. Friendly bartenders are here and easy-going patrons. They are also open late up until 1AM most nights; sometimes later than that. This reminds me of Spyder Kelly's. Glad they resuscitated this place and it's up and running again.

Yelp
Came here pretty late on a weekday. I ordered a fajita and pool table. Service was excellent and the pool tables were in good condition. The food tasted great as well. I really enjoyed being back to this restaurant after many years of going to their previous location. I think their previous location probably had better lighting when it comes to ambience since it was open in the front and parking was also easier back then.

Yelp
I went to join the karaoke and was impressed by the organizers. People were capturing video of the performances. I took part and was having a great time until I was asked to stop, so I did. Then, thinkibg everything was cool, the manager asked one of his servers to ask me to leave because I make people "uncomfortable", yet, that was the whole point of the event. I say, fine, if you give me a reason and a refund. The manager unreasonable refused. I'd like him replaced. Thank you!

Yelp
Chill vibes and lots of beer. Came here to meet up some friends and appreciated having the space to hang out by the bar. They even got pinball in the back. Parking is a bit of a challenge but it is in the heart of Arlington and was expected. The bartenders were so sweet and even brought us some chocolates to nibble on while we had beers and we're waiting for food. Good lives all around!

Yelp
Great staff, great screens and great fried pickles! Love this neighborhood spot with big spaces indoors and out!

Yelp
I came here after a track workout to social with the running team. We sat at the outside picnic tables and were able to order at the bar window. I had the chicken Caesar wrap and fries. I got tenders and fries to-go for my husband. The food was fresh and hot. The thin-sliced fries were delicious and salty. I also enjoyed a Port City Optimal Wit. I would come back here again for food or brews!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to watch a game or sit outside on the patio! They have great happy hour deals Monday-Friday 4-7pm. The bartenders go above and beyond and are always very friendly.
google avatar

Alisa L.

Yelp
Cheap drinks, friendly bartenders, great ambiance (dive bar-ish with average age maybe 26 on a Saturday night), and excellent fried pickles. What else could you want?

Yelp
Best bartender in Arlington, Mikey! He is a legend, just go into this place to see him.

Yelp
Great sports bar with games and pretty decent food! We ordered the nachos (which was a pretty hefty portion size) and the chicken tenders both of which were tasty! The chicken tenders came with an interesting shaped french fries which I didn't love but wasn't bad. I do really wish I ordered this buffalo style (which is dressed in buffalo sauce) as I saw someone else order this and it looked so good. This place has tons of tvs which is really great for any game days and it has a nice atmosphere (not too crowded which I appreciate)!

Yelp
Decent beer selection, and friendly bartenders. This review is based on a happy hour where all I got were a few beers. They had quite a few on tap and even more in cans. Based on my experience I'd definitely return to try the food. It seemed like they had a good selection of typical bar food. Just a heads up that the wine selection isn't great so don't go for that!

Yelp
I guess you could call us "pinheads"! My hubby and I were looking for a great place to rack up some time on some Sterns Connected pinball tables, this is definitely one of the best in DC! Several tables, a few with the 3 plays for $2. The beer selection is great, and staff are super helpful and engaged despite having lots of patrons to manage. It's a happening place! Last but not least, food was really tasty after punching our names on some leaderboards. Thanks Carpool! We will be back!

Yelp
i put $20 into touch tunes and they didn't play my songs but drinks are pretty nice. i love a red bull vodka

Yelp
I give my meal at carpool a 3.5 stars out of 5. I ordered the Buffalo chicken waffle sandwich. It was good, but it didn't meet my expectations for the sandwich. The sandwich lacked a bit of juiciness in the chicken, and overall flavor. If tasted like each individual ingredient was placed on the waffle instead of developing complex flavors that gel well together. They also don't have table service, so you have to order food at the bar. Which is fine but I found it to be annoying to get refills of water at the bar every time I needed it. The ambience was good people were playing games and watching sports. But I just didn't think this sandwich was well executed.

Yelp
I came here after I heard they had a lot of pinball machines. It's kind of out of the way for me, but there's no choice since Vuk's in Bethesda closed. They have a good number of machines, but not really ones that I like that much. No Monster Mash. No Medieval Madness. No South Park. For a full list, just go to the Pinball Map app. For all the most selection, you have to go all the way to Mom's in College Park. The cost to play is also expensive -75 cents or 1.00 for most (bring cash or change). Vuk's used to be 25 cents. I guess these prices match the Arlington area. However if you're lucky, you will get some free plays left over from other players who have abandoned a machine. Other than that, the garage theme was cool. It reminded me of The Garage bar in Culver City.

Yelp
Really fun vibe on Saturday night we had delicious beers on tap. The wing, nachos and calamari was great the calamari were unique and delicious the sauce that comes with them is super good and the runner kindly brought us more. The best part was the bartender my brother and I agree the olds bartenders behind the bar were the owners because they probably were out off staff member like every one's in the hospitality industry. But anyway they both old man were awesome and super friendly great jobs old man's. We will definitely keep coming back good time.

Yelp
This place is a great addition to Ballston. Even though there's quite a few sports bars in the area, you can always use another place for low key drinks and food. The great thing about this place is that it's spacious with pool tables, great food (the nachos are great!) and well priced drinks. Also, the service is on point. Everyone is incredibly nice and even though there isn't table service per se, the bartender/server/owners(?) constantly swing by to check up on you. If you're looking for a casual get together with friends without the stress of finding tables (happens often in Ballston!), I'd highly recommend Carpool.

Yelp
Awesome place to meet up with friends for drinks and small bites. The bartender, Mike, is so fun and makes the visit so much better with his outgoing personality! The drinks were great, the place was clean, and had a great car-themed vibe. There are pool tables in the back for customers to use and hangout in addition to another bar in the back. I would highly recommend Carpool as a social place to gather in Arlington.

Yelp
No complaints about carpool- it's what you'd expect! Tons of pool tables and games like darts and pinball, along with a TON of tvs to watch whatever sports game you prefer. Bathrooms were clean and bartenders were always quick and friendly. Didn't eat here so can't attest for the food.

Yelp
Small bar located off of Glebe Rd in Ballston, VA. I really enjoyed the bar set up with pool tables and pinball machines in the back. Service was efficient and respectful. They could do better on the food. I ordered the basics like chicken tenders and fried pickles, but sometimes if its too heavily breaded you just feel off. Overall, a nice place to swing by and grab a drink.

Yelp
I generally do not do reviews after just one visit - just like I don't fall in love after one night and some hand stuff - but there is something about Carpool that's quite special and I I'll make an exception. Friends and I often visit Spider Kelly's for pool and a drink or two, but decided on Carpool last night because we wanted to avoid the crowd. It was definitely a good decision. For a bar that has pool, pinball machines and other attractions, this place was especially clam and quiet, which is always a plus. Even though there is a jukebox, the volume was a manageable level to where we could have a conversation and still have fun with friends while enjoying some tunes. Perhaps the biggest difference between this place and Spider Kelly's is that while both has a younger college crowd (GMU is close by), the ones going to Carpool do not appear to be frat boys and look like they have a future after graduation rather than moving back into's mom's basement. The food was also delicious, and the drinks cheap and strong. I recommend the calamari. It was easily one of the best. I especially loved the bartenders who were very quick and friendly. If you're looking for a hole-in-the-wall kind of place for a night out with friends, this is just it. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We had a blast playing pinball here. The machines were in great shape. My son is going to join their pinball league. Drinks were great and the servers were super friendly.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere. A ton of pinball machines, cheap billiards. Food is tasty and, given the economy and the area, rather affordable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Open, spacious and clean.

Yelp
I've been to Carpool a couple times now to watch Penn State football games! It's a super fun atmosphere and has been packed each time i've been. When we go we order appetizers to share! The nachos are delicious and some of my favorites. The pretzels are also super yummy! My only complaint is that the fried pickles have tasted different each time we've ordered them. Sometimes the pickle slices are super thin and the breading is thin as well while other times the slices are thicker and the breading on them is much thicker as well. I much prefer them thinner, but they have been different each time. You can tell the difference in the pictures!

Juan G.

Yelp
Sat there for 20 minutes. No one ever came to attend. Asked who could attend and never got a response.
google avatar

Rohit R.

Yelp
I was really excited to find out that a place opened up with pool tables in Ballston. We had a good time, grabbing some beer and playing some pool. The bartenders were very friendly. Their boneless buffalo wings were solid but their fried pickles were just okay, a little too crispy. The continental definitely has better fried pickles. We saw a fried chicken and waffle sandwich go by that looked delicious and will definitely have to try next time that we're there.

Yelp
I moved to Arlington a year or so before some really fun places opened. Carpool on Fairfax Drive quickly became a favorite. A huge factor was the best bartender, Mike, whom I have ever had the pleasure of pouring for me. I had moved to Loudoun County for a few years but when I had heard that the Carpool was closing after a great run, I had to say goodbye to Mike ! Fast forward to late 2021 when the new Ballston Glebe was struggling to open. And, finally the news came out that December 1st was the day. Going back at first was a great Reunion. Now everytime I go there I meet more and more new friends and hang out with new ones met there recently. The whole staff is friendly as can be and they really make you feel welcomed. When the weather turns to spring their patio will add more capacity, which will be needed. I have ideas about their expansion, but I shall leave it here by saying I have been to many bars since I was legally allowed. The Carpool at 900 Glebe Road is my Favorite bar EVER !
google avatar

Jocelyn H.

Yelp
The service was great. All the bartenders were extremely helping in getting orders taken from a large group and getting them to the correct person. They have lots of fun things to do, darts, pool. I enjoyed the wings and the salad. Got bar food, the menu is pretty decent. The vibe is definitely chill and relaxed. No DJ when we went, but they did have tvs for game watching.
google avatar

Yelp
I have missed this for soooo long don't do reviews always but tonight the food was awesome! They messed me p and took food and drinks while we were playing but when I approached the waiter her was nice and went back on his own accord and fixed it And then I got beat on shuffle board I blame the waiter

Lorna M.

Yelp
As I lay in bed on this cold, lonesome Monday night, I can't help but think about Carpool. Today marks my 22nd sober night in honor of Dry January - an opportunity to cleanse my being of alcoholic beverages in efforts to rejuvenate my body of all the toxins that beer and liquor brings. It's been too long since I've stepped foot in Carpool. Knowing that I only have a mere nine days left of sobriety, it excites me to know I will be reunited with this fine establishment. Where I can enjoy the musky scent that surround the pool tables... and the dart boards that patiently wait for me under the dimly lit ambiance. My mother once said, if you love something, let it go. If it doesn't come back, you never had it. If it comes back, love it forever. Destiny only knows our true fate. I hope to see you soon, Carpool. Your fried pickles are gas.

Yelp
Fun food and sports! Nice service and pinball machines! I was there for a party and food was pretty good.

Yelp
Carpool is pretty good. In fact, it's tremendous. Order some food and play some pinball. Mess around on the jukebox. Enjoy your life and spend your life at Carpool.

Shawn B.

Yelp
5ft bouncer David was a jerk when trying to get food with adults under 21 at 11pm. We said ok when he told us you had to be 21 at that time. Wouldn't give us two minutes to gather our party on our plans to go elsewhere without harassing us like a creep. Won't return.

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Do not try to go here if you have a service animal. The bouncers believe the ADA laws don't apply to them. They also believe ID cards from fraudulent websites qualify dogs as service animals. After being show ADA laws they still will say they don't apply to them. AVOID!!!

Yelp
Hi, I went to Carpool this past Saturday with a large group of friends to celebrate my husband and I'd birthdays. We all had separate checks and mine was $98 with tip. Luckily I kept my receipt because the waiter wrote $1 in front of $98 making my total $198 on an $80 bill. I do not recommend going here. This is theft and fraudulent. I now have to dispute this with my credit card company and this is a hassle. I also brought in 20 friends and had to let them know to check their bills. I also brought in a lot of business to this restaurant and this is how I'm treated? Horrible and I loved the old carpool.

Megan M.

Yelp
Do not trust the bartenders! We came in and ate and drank in the bar. Paid our cc bill and tipped over $100 in cash. Got my cc billing statement and it was $46 higher then my receipt. Turns out the bartenders added an additional $46 to both my cc and the other parties cc! Thankfully both parties saved our receipts but really!!!??? How freaking shady is this! Filed a dispute with my cc company. Unbelievable!

Jack A.

Yelp
a great place to get some food and play pool for hours; staff is very friendly, food is great, what's not to love, right?
