26 Essential Stops on Your Michigan Road Trip | Eater

"Located in a former Taco Bell in Ypsilanti, the humble exterior belies the culinary treasure that awaits you inside. The sweet and spicy aroma of Moroccan cooking surrounds you the minute you walk through the door. Owner and head chef Abdul Mani welcomes you to the table with a collection of traditional dishes tinged with fruits and spices evocative of his North African home, including bastilla, a phyllo dough pocket filled with shredded chicken, almonds, and orange blossom water ($14), and tagines of various meats combined with couscous, raisins, vegetables, and savory sauces ($12-$17)." - Vox Creative

Google
The best Moroccan food! We stop any time we're close. Amazing food, great service and a friendly atmosphere.

Google
The gentleman who took our order was friendly and helpful when choosing. I only wish I had capacity to try everything at once because it all looked (and smelled) AMAZING. I loved my meal and will return on my next Michigan trip!

Google
Great food and a hidden gem, the chicken tagine portion was huge and the chicken was very tender. Hummus was also great and rice pudding was alright. Place looks a little dinky but don’t let that fool you

Google
Recent dinner was very good, even though we knew little about Moroccan food- everything was quite tasty. The dine-in area appears to be an old taco bell layout and all the big windows made it chilly- so dress warm in the winter - but it is worth the trip. The table service was friendly and adequate. The moroccan combo appetizer was a good starter as hummus, baba ghanoush, tabouli, and falafel were all good. We tried both Casablanca and Moroccan entree combos for sampling and both were very good. Of the combos - the bistilla was excellent, chix mhammar(watch the bones) and sweet lamb also good, zaalook and lentil soup good as well. Garlic sauce is killer if thats your thing. For dessert both baklava and Moroccan rice pudding were very good. Moroccan mint tea and coffee were a bit sweet and different but still good.

Google
It's such a pleasure to eat inside Casablanca--the mood is calming, friendly, warm. And the aromas, oh! And then the food arrives, every bite delectable. Sometimes we take our food to go--we bring it home, share a most tasty meal, and feel lucky and gratified the rest of the day.

Google
Fantastic experience in a small and intimate atmosphere. When we arrived, we were only one of two parties but by the time we left the whole restaurant was full, and for good reason. All of the dishes we ordered were delicious. The portion sizes are generous and we packed boxes to take home. We highly recommend ordering the combos for the table. The rice pudding and baklava was good.

Google
Wow, what a wonderful hidden gem!!! I just got back from Morocco a few weeks ago and I was craving and searching everywhere in Michigan to find some good pastilla! We found this place and we were not disappointed! The food was fantastic and the staff was so friendly! :) it’s also smaller so very intimate and the prices were fair for the amount of food you get. Overall extremely pleased and will be back!

Google
The quality of their food is good. We ordered enough food for four of us. The whole chicken seesh kebab was tasty but dry. Soup was very good. Baba ganoush was very tasty, but it needed a drizzle of olive oil on top. Interestingly we loved the couscous. Meatballs were the tastiest among all of them. Lastly we ordered rice pudding as our dessert which would go better without the dash of cinnamon on top of it.

Yelp
As soon as we saw that Casablanca served Moroccan food, we were very interested in visiting. We hadn't had Moroccan food before but all the dishes seemed delicious and we especially wanted to see how the cuisine differs from the many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean places we've been to throughout Metro Detroit. We stopped in for a Saturday lunch and found the place almost completely empty, with only a single other table eating in. Service was generally friendly and quick although they were rather short staffed at the time, with only the owner and one cook in the house. While we were leaving another two people came in to work so we might have just been there too early. We settled on getting the Moroccan Combo for Two, which basically hit almost everything we wanted to try. Moroccan Combo for Two ($49.99) - This menu item comes with a variety of different Moroccan dishes, so it was a good choice given that we had a number of things we wanted to try. The combo comes with two sides, with a choice between rice, fries, soup (lentil or vegetable), and salad. We went with rice and salad. Salad - The salad is pretty standard cut vegetables (romaine, diced tomato, and diced cucumber) with a fattoush-like vinegrette. The portion size is a bit smaller than what I expected, given the full size salad we usually get from Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants when we order the combos for two. Zaalook - This dish tempers down the smokiness of a baba ganoush with a bit of spice and tomato base. It has a slightly chunky texture so we could scoop it up with bread easily. Hummus - Pretty standard hummus, nothing much else to say. It goes well with the bread. We got a small round loaf of sliced Moroccan bread (khubz) with the two dips. The bread is served warm to the touch, with a good crust and moist interior. It seems to be mainly whole wheat based, adding a good earthiness. It's yeasted, and the inside is nice and fluffy. Half Bistilla - We were a bit taken aback at the sweet/savory combo here. Cinnamon on savory, fine, but powdered sugar on top as well? After we tasted it, it turned out to be really good. Fresh fried crispy phyllo surrounding a layer of spiced chicken and egg mixture, a layer of chopped cinnamon almonds, and then topped with ground cinnamon and powdered sugar.I think it was very smart of them to include a half serving in the combo, so we could take a risk and not have an entire entree to go through. Be sure to eat the bistilla quickly as the bottom can get soggy after sitting a while. Half Sweet Lamb Tagine - The sweet lamb is served with couscous that is extremely fluffy and pairs well with the meat. I do not typically like the gaminess of a Western lamb, but this one was tender, lean, and had almost none of the gamey lamb flavor. I guess they use fat-tailed sheep? Take this with a grain of salt, but I found that the lamb was some of the best I've had - the fact that I actually enjoyed eating this was a surprise. The lamb is covered in a delicious sauce flavored with bay leaves and herbs (cilantro stems + ?) mixed with diced onions and raisins. There are several large pieces of carrot included, which were tender with a sweetness that complemented the dish. Half Chicken Mhammar - This was served with the rice choice as mentioned above. The rice seems to be cooked in a salty chicken broth - we actually found it to be a little too salty for our tastes. It had the texture of a pilaf with a kind of al dente bite. They cook it with some fat to give it a smooth mouthfeel, and turmeric to give it a bright yellow appearance. The chicken is served in a tasty tomato and onion based sauce. The chicken had great flavor on the skin and had some crispier charred bits. The interior, as expected for most roast-type chickens, was kind of on the dry side especially on the breast meat, but this just allowed it to soak up more of the delicious sauce. Side Note: Casablanca charges a 4% credit card fee Casablanca was definitely a great introduction to Moroccan food. Everything was delicious and I feel like we got good value for the price. We'll be back in the future to try some other Moroccan specialties - we're thinking the Kafta Tagine and the Charmoula.

Yelp
My experience with Moroccan food is relatively limited --- it was SoCal-based where it was almost more about the entertainment, atmosphere with the tagines, the mint tea pour in a beautiful teapot from above head height.... Casablanca is not that. It's super no frills, but it's tasty and like walking into someone's home because of the hospitality and family-run nature of it! They also have Mediterranean dishes but we wanted to try some new things. We ordered: *MOROCCAN COMBO (Choose 4: Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Zalook, Tabouli, or Falafel.) - We picked hummus, baba ghanoush, zalook (Fire-Roasted Eggplant puree with tomatoes, herbs, spice & olive oil ) and the tabouli. I've never had Zalook before and it was SO good. Super flavorful. All the dippie dips were delicious. It's served with this house made bread that we asked for seconds for! So tasty! *CHICKEN TAGINE WITH OLIVES ($17.99 - Slow-cooked Moroccan Chicken, olives; cooked with aromatic herbs & spices) - This was delicious - super juicy chicken. *KAFTA TAGINE (MOROCCAN MEATBALLS) [$18.99 Moroccan Meatballs seasoned with aromatic herbs & spices then sautéed with our house-made tomato sauce.] - I got my with cous cous ($+2.99) and had no regrets! I could tell this was a lamb blend of meatballs though as I'm a bit sensitive to the gameyness but honestly it wasn't too gamey at all. It was great the next day as well since the portions were huge! Definitely a good value. *HARISSA (House-made Hot Sauce! Chili pepper, spices & Extra-virgin olive oil) - definitely get this as a side. It packs a punch and there's definitely plenty to take home with you! I ended up using this to make tahini and harissa roasted cauliflower at home. It wasn't too busy at all for weekend night. There were mostly to-go orders. I'll have to come back to try the other menu items like the Bistilla, Charmoula, etc as well as save room for dessert.

Yelp
The restaurant has gone down. The food does not seem fresh and unseasoned. The Harara soup is bland. What happed to this good restaurant. The building is old. The silverware is old. The glasses are old plastic glasses that have been around for years. I would only recommend getting carry out.

Yelp
What a wonderful find! This restaurant is housed in an old Taco Bell which also makes it neat in my opinion. Love the old arched window and architecture of it all. The food is amazing! We started with the harissa, garlic paste, hummus with chicken l, falafel. An order of fresh bread was also brought to the table. It was warm and tasted delicious mixed into all of the sauces and dips we had. Yes it destroyed our breath but it was worth it. The harissa is spicy and the garlic paste is pure whipped heaven. I also had a medium fatoosh salad. It was quite large and packed full of flavor. The large would be big enough to share. The dressing was tangy and I really liked it. Everything we ordered I would order again. The service came from the owner who was a class act. He told us all about the food with so much love and pride. Bookmarked and highly recommended. Fairly priced this place is one you need to try. Don't let the exterior scare you off.

Yelp
Our entire experience at Casablanca was just lovely. The server and other staff were warm, attentive, and very sweet to our toddler. Everything we ordered was incredibly delicious ! I haven't lived in southeast MI for over a decade and constantly miss quality middle eastern food (particularly a shish tawook sandwich). Casablanca's shish tawook was perfection, I did a little happy dance with that first bite! We also tried their hummus, homemade bread, fattoush salad, lamb tagine, Moroccan coffee (my husband said it was one of the best things he's ever tasted), and several sweets. I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Renee W.

Yelp
Foods decent if you're taste is sweet savory dishes. The stuffed pastry was good! But fries too salty for my liking and bread was cold ( maybe that's how it's supposed to be eaten?) Manager seemed unpleasant. Cute decor but wet floors during service.

Yelp
I come here for high quality, fresh, and uplifting food when I'm too tired to cook. The restaurant is tucked in an assuming former Taco Bell. When I was dining by myself, the owner came and talked to me and shared a bit about his restaurant. This made in a positive impression on me. Subsequently, I invited two of my friends here--and they both LOVED it. This place is suitable for an Asian palette. A bit on the pricey side, but the food quality, customer service, and novelty make up for it. Recommendations: Lamb tagine: slow cooked meat, raising, sweet potatoes - get it! Bistilla: sweet and savory flavor crackled, layered meat pancake - get it! Rice pudding - get it! French fries - get it!

Kaila D.

Yelp
Excellent food. The lamb and beef gyro was great. I also ordered baba ganoush and the lemonade with ginger. It was all delicious. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
The food is tasty but the meat portion size is undesirable for the price near $30.00. When I tell you it disappointed me to write this review. But we have to hold our people accountable to do better. Will revisit and comment.

Sarah J.

Yelp
We ordered a catering platter for Thanksgiving, and it was wonderful. The meats were smokey and savory, but there were plenty of vegetarian options also. I just wish the platter came with more tabouli. Can't wait to go back and try more Moroccan food.
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
The food is so delicious with unique spices... and low prices! Honestly, they should charge more... You won't regret coming here! they are pretty quick too! I had a vegetarian sandwich with rice on the side and mint tea.
google avatar

Alisa A.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the gritty exterior. Casablanca is the real deal! Lamb tahini, harari soup, and chicken shawarma were excellent, and the in-house bread was perfection. Friendly owner. Small but clean restroom.

Bob N.

Yelp
Best Moroccan food ever!! (counting Morocco) Best hummus, too. The family that runs Casablanca is wonderful. What a great discovery.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
What a gem of place... the food was very good! It was fresh and with a lot of love. The curb appeal is terrible I almost left and went somewhere else but the reviews are what kept me from leaving. The service and food was very good. It was my 1st time having Moroccan food. Now I just need to go to Morocco lol! If I'm ever in the area, I'd love to go again. The only thing I didn't like was the bread. I was expecting something like traditional middle eastern homemade pita bread but all I got was a loaf of bread I didn't care for. Other than that, I enjoyed everything. I highly recommend the mint tea.

Brandon C.

Yelp
Pleasant surprise, this is why you never judge a book from its cover. From the outside you may not think much but once you order and get your food you will be pleased with the quality of food and portion sizes. Their plate for two can easily feed 3-4 people and was absolutely delicious. I'd recommend and look forward to eating there again.

Rayyan M.

Yelp
Well my dad owns the place so if you are super hungry I would eat a supper lamb dish so yeah

Yelp
Fun fact, did you know that the Detroit Metropolitan area has the highest population of those of Middle Eastern descent in the United States? With that, hypothetically Detroit would have the best Middle Eastern food and Casablanca definitely didn't disappoint. - Sweet Lamb Tagine - I love the rice, oh my god! I can just eat a whole plate with just that without any meat. I really appreciated the raisins to cut the salinity of the lamb which was extremely tender. Definitely the better one out of the two. - Casablanca Whole Grilled Chicken - The chicken itself was a little bit dry but the flavor is spot on. I'm so impressed by how much they give you, definitely can feed a family of 4. Once again, the rice is my favorite part. Overall, delicious meal at Casablanca especially the rice. Excited to try more other Middle Eastern food in the Detroit area.

Yelp
Located in a former location of a Taco Bell, what Casablanca lacks in ambiance it makes up for in flavors and service. I was heading back through Ypsi after running some errands and a run to Casablanca seemed like a good idea. We hadn't been yet but I'd heard great things and I was itching to try something new for dinner. I placed an order online and, after my final curbside pick up at the nearby Joann's, I was able to swing by and scoop up our order. It was ready for me by the time I arrived and a quick hello and thank you to the staff and a friendly pick up had me back on my way. My husband and I split the Casablanca combo for 2 which came with 1 kafta, 1 tawook, 1 kabob, mixed shwarma, 3 falafel, hummus, and garlic sauce. I also read so much about their bistilla that I had to try it, so we ordered the appetizer size. OMG so much food. So much DELICIOUS food. I was floored. We had leftovers for 3 days and everything was top notch. The bistilla was incredible, too. Slightly sweet, slightly savory, and encased in a delicious flaky phylo (herb saffron chicken, orange blossom water, honey, almonds powdered sugar, and cinnamon). I'd order it as an entree on it's own, for sure. I look forward to coming back and trying even more, particularly of their Moroccan specialties!

Adam C.

Yelp
It's so damn good. The lentil soup is incredible. Everything I eat here makes me want more. Truly some of the best food in town.

Yelp
Few things are better than discovering a new restaurant that meets or exceeds your expectations. After hovering on our "we should try that sometime" list, my husband and I decided that today was the day for Casablanca. I perused Yelp for inspiration on what to order, and ultimately decided on something light: Fatoush Salad and an order of Moroccan chicken wings. He went with an order of the chicken wings and the lamb tangine. Online ordering was easy, and we were soon able to pick up our meal (we are in the throes of 2020 restaurant lockdown and sadly cannot dine in). The staff was so friendly and happy to see us grabbing our pickup order. Once back home, we unpacked our goodness. I think this is a place where you can't go wrong no matter what you order. Thinking of ordering the wings? Go for it. Want to be healthy and get the fatoush salad? Do it, and try and figure out the dressing recipe while you're at it. Lamb tangine sounding better to you? You'll love it (he let me have a bite of his, so I can vouch for it). All said and done, we have a new place where we will look forward to ordering carryout, and to dining in when we can do that again!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Tried the kafta tagine, harissa, and the combo appetizer with hummus and baba ganoush. Food was all very delicious. I didn't care as much for the baklava which didn't taste very fresh (also it was the walnut variety which always tastes dry to me even when fresh!). Staff were also super friendly and provided excellent service. I'd definitely go back!
google avatar

Sandy P.

Yelp
When we drove up, we saw a tiny old building all by itself. The parking lot was cracked and weeds sprouted through the asphalt. The whole thing was quite unprepossessing. Inside there was a small dining room and a tall super-friendly guy who spoke English perfectly. Everything was spotless. We ordered and our waiter/manager/factotum helped us choose dishes. We had six people and were the only people present, but it was at 2pm during Ramadan so probably not their busiest time. Food came out quickly and was terrific. I had a sampler appetizer plate for my meal with delicious tabouleh, baba ganoush, hummus, and falafel. Two others in our party got falafel sandwiches and one had a gyro. I think the other two had shwarmas. Anyway it was the best Mediterranean food we had in our four days in Ypsilanti and we ate it almost every day. Top notch. Now that I know Casablanca has the best north african cuisine I'll be coming here next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
Absolutely stellar. We stopped in on a whim one weeknight and it was empty. There's only a few tables inside. The food is so wonderful, and service is always friendly and kind.
google avatar

Mitchell L.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place and I guess I thought it would be revolutionary when it was just standard. The service was fantastic but the food didn't hit the spot for me personally. I also was hoping to order Moroccan cuisine and accidentally ordered more Mediterranean, so that would be something I would do differently if I went again. Definitely room on my end to see this rating go up!
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be and the parking situation can be tricky, but the food is worth it. We got the shish kafta plate and beef shawarma plate with salads. All of it was absolutely delicious. The meats had great flavor and the sauce was delicious. The salads were great quality and the house made dressing was good. Even better than the food is the customer service. Friendly, smiley, and you can tell they genuinely care about their food and their guests. The owner was walking around checking on tables and asking if they're enjoying their food. There was also a steady stream of people coming in while we were there. Highly recommend this little place. I will definitely be back whenever I'm in the area again.

Yelp
Our go-to for Middle Eastern sandwiches. Their food is well-priced, filling, and fast.

Yelp
Warmly welcomed into this delicious-smelling restaurant and seated at a four top, I enjoyed everything. And a special shout-out to the water. It was the cleanest and crispest glass of water. No, really. This glass of water was great! Since this is an alcohol-free restaurant, it was appreciated. I had a salad to start and it had a delicious and light dressing. I ate every bit of the lettuce! Appetizer was the Moroccan chicken wings. Delicious in a very sweet sauce but they also had just a little bit of zing. Full wings, so drums and flaps. Tasty. For main, I enjoyed a platter of chicken shawarma. Not a huge portion but moist and delicious with the garlic sauce (I think it's called toum). The roasted vegetables were delicious, though I set the carrots and potatoes to the side (keto diet!) and picked out the eggplant and tomatoes. A fab meal and great friendly service. Not tremendously fancy but good quality. No dessert today for me. [Review 11077 overall, 850 of 2019.]

Yelp
The food was amazing. The chicken and beef had amazing flavor and it complimented so well with the saffron basmati rice and garlic paste. The food came out rather quickly and it was delicious. Totally recommend!

Yelp
Very small, locally owned place along Washtenaw. Excellent Moroccan food and good portions at reasonable prices. Low key ambience and they do a lot of take out. Went there on a Wednesday evening with a group of four. The place was mostly empty so we were served quickly throughout the meal. It was a bit cold and drafty in the restaurant (frigid winter night) but otherwise it's a comfy casual feeling place. The owner came to say hello and to ask how our meal was going which was a nice touch. We got a hummus and baba ganoush for the table and enjoyed both. The drips were creamy and flavorful and the bread was fresh baked! For mains my girlfriend and I split the Kafta Tagine (spicy meatballs in sauce over a bed of rice) and the Shish Tawook (marinated chicken pieces with a side of fries, but you can get rice too). We liked both dishes a lot. Both meats were super juicy and flavorful and both dishes were nice sizes. The Tawook came with a second side and we got a lentil soup which was just okay (a little bland and not too hot). We didn't get a chance to try their salads so we'll have to go back. The main dishes don't come with much vegetation. Our friend got the veggie tagine which was similar to our meatball dish except with some roasted veggies on top.

Yelp
Omg omg so freaking GOOD. This is the type of restaurant you go to when youre just starting out dabbling in different foods. The chicken tagine is AMAZING. It's so juicy and fresh, you literally cannot go wrong. You can tell the food is made by someone who loves their culture. The wait times can a little bit slow though, this isn't the type of place where you can call ahead five minutes and expect it to be ready when you get there. This is the type of place where you call while in the middle of running errands and when your done and ready to go home you swing by 30 minutes later haha

Jilian J.

Yelp
Oooo this place is so nice and inexpensive!!! The guys working there are awesome!!! Nice ambiance, great food. And the carrot is fast too!!! Enjoy

Eleanor B.

Yelp
A husband and wife team that serves homestyle Moroccan and familiar middle eastern food especially the moist and tasty Chicken Sharwarma sandwich. I love the bread that comes with the spiced zalook, Moroccan lamb tagine though I don't like lamb dishes!

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this gem before? I am sadly about to move away and am already dreaming about coming back to visit this place. This place is one of a kind. Pre-covid, I dined in a few times and the staff has always been super accommodating and friendly. During Covid, I have still felt comfortable ordering online and going in for a quick pick up. Employees have been masked and taking sanitary precautions. Most importantly: THE FOOD. The veg options are in incredible. Get their veggie wrap sandwich. It is the best sandwich I've ever had in my life and it's only FOUR DOLLARS. Oh man. It's got tagine veggies, hummus and garlic sauce. To die for. And because that's never enough veggie tagine, I also always get the Moroccan hummus. Also can't ever go without getting a big container of lentil soup. It's just the best. Writing this review is making me hungry and I might have to go get a veggie wrap now. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Yelp
I place an order for delivery. It took about an hour to get here, which is expected. It came at the time that they told me it would come. The delivery person was nice and polite when he called to let me know my food was outside. I ordered the Moroccan Chicken Wings, they have a sweet flavor with a little spice in the end. The Harira soup, had a great aroma but it was bland it tasted like flavored water. The French fries were decent, they taste like real potatoes. The Anise tea, had a good aroma and it was pretty good tea. I also received bread with my order which I wasn't expecting. The wings I would definitely try them again.

Yelp
Incredible food and service, we just moved to Ann Arbor a few months ago and this has already become a favorite spot.

Yelp
Place is very authentic and very different from places in Dearborn. I try to pop in when I'm in that part of town. Be adventurous and try new things.

Yelp
Imagine yourself a traveler... You're on a trade route along the Spanish coast, and you're crossing the Straight of Gibraltar... Or, you're in a caravan, traveling across the northern coast of Africa... Either way, you find yourself in Casablanca, Marrakesh or Tangier ... Cities of romance and wonder... mysteries upon mysteries... with sights, sounds and aromas... The cuisine is a wonder all to itself. Cultural influence from all around the region descend on Morocco, with their impeccable use of spices and fruits. Recipes that date back hundreds, if not thousands of years... introduced by the Berbers over 2,000 years ago, the Tagine has been a cooking staple ever since. Fast forward to 2019... you're in Ypsilanti MI, and you're in Casablanca... An unassuming little place, that appears to be an old Taco Bell. Spartan interior with white walls, a few pictures and decorations. But, you're not there for the ambiance... you're there for the outstanding food and stellar hospitality. A family run restaurant that pours their heart and soul into every dish. We've been there three times already, and since the first time, expect no less than excellence... and they've delivered every time. Start off with the Moroccan Hummus... Unlike anything you've ever tasted. Rich, warm hummus, with a pool of vegetables and spices. It can be a meal in itself, especially when accompanied with their fresh, baked bread. Its complexity will tantalize taste buds you didn't know you had. Their Chicken Tagine with Olives is a family favorite... Half a chicken, cooked in a Tagine, so tender it falls off the bone... a mixture of sweet and savory, with a touch of hot... you could pick out the individual layers of spices from the first bite, to the finish... The Bistilla is like getting a present wrapped up in Phylo dough... minced chicken and eggs... fried almonds and cinnamon... crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside... 100% exotic in flavors... The Couscous Dish w/ choice of meat... I chose Salmon... A full plate of soft, tender Couscous, topped with a cornucopia of vegetables, sauce and a generous slab of Salmon sitting right on top. Every bite was better than the previous, and I was hard pressed to finish the whole dish. Our last time there, we enjoyed our meals with a couple of their smoothies... my wife had the Avocado w/ Honey, and I had the Casablanca delight... a must have, to balance out the meal's flavors... Our second time there, the owner came out, and asked how everything was. We complimented. We raved. Our excitement beamed trough our eyes. One look from the owner's face, and you knew he was pleased, and humbled. He then put his hand over his heart... and bowed to us, which is, in Arab culture, a sign of respect, humility, and to show gratitude or "thank you" (in the name of Allah). Wonderful people. Extraordinary food. I encourage everyone to travel to Casablanca, and taste the exotic mystery of Moroccan cuisine.

Yelp
What a hospitable, friendly atmosphere and delicious food!!! Dined in a couple weekends ago on a Friday night with a couple friends with two kids. Walking up to the restaurant from outside mouthwatering aromas filled the air, tantalizing your senses with what deliciousness was to come. At 7:30 it was only about 1/2 full, they quickly put together a few tables to seat the five of us. The server was incredibly friendly and great with the kids, giving them plenty of paper and crayons to draw. Also one of the kids had several allergies to milk and nuts, and they were very helpful in identifying which foods would and would not be suitable for the child's consumption. The menu offers a variety of items sure to please. We ordered: 1) Zalook appetizer: a zesty dip with roasted eggplant, tomatoes, olive oil and garlic. Came with this warm fluffy bread with a nice crust. 2) chicken shwarma for the kids, I didn't taste this, but the kids demolished it, so I'm guessing it was pretty good. What I did taste were the fries that they ordered as a side with this, and the fries were surprisingly addictive, and great for dipping in the zalook and hummus. 3) Moroccan combo for 2, which included: - a smaller serving of zalook (mentioned above) and hummus: their hummus was light and creamy, not grainy or chunky, but you could still taste the chickpeas and olive oil, and it was really tasty. - two slices of Bistella: phylo dough stuffed w/savory saffron chicken, omelet stuffing w/fried almonds, flavored with orange blossom water and topped w/cinnamon & sugar. Wow. Flaky dough, bursting with savory filling, a touch of sweetness to bring out all the flavors of the spices. Loved this. - 1/2 Chicken Mhammar: chicken stewed in butter saffron onions and herbs. So tender, and that butter saffron sauce was delightful. Served over basmati rice...I could eat this dish for days. - Sweet Lamb Tagine : lamb chunks with herbs, honey and raisins. I don't know how they stewed this lamb but it was probably one of the best lamb preparations I've ever eaten. Served over fluffy couscous. I'm drooling.... Throughout dinner our server checked on us often and came by to refill water a couple times. I could really sense enthusiasm from everyone at the restaurant to see customers enjoying their food. Quite honestly I'm not sure which part of this meal was my favorite, thanks to this place for making my evening taste wonderful.

Yelp
This place is delicious and everyone who works here is warm and attentive. We had both vegetarian and meat dishes and all were excellent. You can tell they really care about doing a good job. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I love their falafel sandwich and their fresh made bread with hummus, soooo good! It's small inside with limited seating, but they are great for takeout too!

Yelp
I'm quite certain this was my first Moroccan food experience, and it did not disappoint! The hummus is out of this world - served with a loaf of bread instead of pita and incredibly creamy and smooth with just the right amount of garlic. The tabouli had a little too much lemon juice for my liking, but still delicious. The vegetable tagine served with couscous is amazing. Prices are a bit steep, but I have enough leftovers for another solid meal. Everything was very fresh, and cooked to order. The chef even came out to see how the food was. I will definitely be back to try the falafel!

Yelp
First time here; spotted it from another Yelper's review. We don't often get over to this side of town unless we are headed to Wisconsin or Chicago. But we will be attending a monthly lecture series nearby so we may become regulars. The first surprise was that it is not a very large place; in fact it appears to have once been something like a Taco Bell. But it was clean and the staff were friendly as we sat down to review the menu. Having already studied the photos on Yelp and looked over the menu on line we were ready to order: Chicken and Olive Tangine for me and Bistilla for my wife. Mine came with choices, I chose Lentil Soup. Soup came out quickly along with some fresh bread and garlic sauce that were both delicious and gone in a couple of minutes. We used all of our will power to not ask for more bread and garlic sauce! Then came the Chicken and the Bistilla. Everything was as good as we had been anticipating. The surprise was the Bastilla because I was struggling to understand how Chicken and sweet would go together, but they really did. I can't wait to try more things next time we visit.

Yelp
Reliably delicious, no matter what I've ordered, and good price/value. Lentil soup extra awesome.

Yelp
I came here on a weekday for dinner with some friends, and we had to wait around 10-15 minutes to be seated. I got to try the Moroccan Chicken Wings, Sweet Lamb Tagine, and the Bistilla. Everything came out in a timely order. However, I was really disappointed when I discovered the Moroccan Chicken Wings were raw. Our server was super accommodating though and gave us three extra fully cooked chicken wings. Despite the rawness, the chicken wings were pretty good. If you don't like the taste of honey, I would recommend getting a different flavor for the wings because they mostly tasted like honey. The Sweet Lamb Tagine was pretty good as well. I usually don't like raisins, but the raisins were actually an excellent addition to the flavor profile of the dish. I wish the meat came out on the bone instead of just chunks. It was also disappointing that the meat was a bit dry and tough to chew. The Bistilla was really unlike anything I had ever eaten before. I would definitely recommend ordering it if you are interested in trying something new and exciting. Realistically, my rating is 3.5, but Yelp does not allow half scores. I would recommend trying this place based on the fact that there is not a lot of Moroccan places around Ann Arbor.

Yelp
1. The bread is really delicious. 2. The lentil soup is tasty. 3. The bistilla (shredded saffron chicken with fried sweet almonds in filo pastry) is definitely worth trying. It doesn't initially sound like it should work but it completely does! It's slightly sweet but more like a main dish than a dessert. 4. The sweet lamb tagine was very well-cooked and tender. 5. Really big and filling portions - the combo for two can definitely feed more than two people. Disclaimer: This was my first experience with Moroccan food. Really cozy mom and pop style place with an unassuming exterior, almost hole-in-a-wall-y. The interior is clean and well-lit, with white brick walls and several large windows. There's a counter area with a dessert case where you can order takeout. The service was excellent - the staff was extremely friendly and constantly checking in on us to make sure everything was alright :) I came here for lunch in a party of four, and we got the Moroccan combo for two ($44.99), sweet lamb tagine ($16.99), and side of Moroccan bread ($1.49). I think something we ordered came with bread automatically, since they gave us two loaves, but I didn't ask. The Moroccan combo consists of bistilla (two pieces), 1/2 chicken Mhammar, sweet lamb with couscous, hummus, zalook, and a side (we got one of each of the soups). The tagine also comes with a side (we got salad). Overall I enjoyed the starters more than the entrees, but this might just be because I'm not a huge meat eater. I definitely want to return in the future to try the other tagines and the Moroccan coffee. I really loved the Moroccan bread! It came out warm, the crust was thin and crispy, and the inside was soft and slightly sweet. The crushed lentil soup is also really good, both alone and dipped with the bread, really well-seasoned. I could seriously just have eaten the bread and lentil soup for the entire meal :) The other starters that came out with the bread were ok - zalook (a garlicky eggplant dip) wasn't anything remarkable, and the hummus was kind of salty. The harira also wasn't remarkable - the crushed lentil soup was much better. The salad, which had tomatoes and cucumbers with a light dressing, was fresh but didn't stand out. The sweet lamb tagine was cooked extremely well; the meat was super tender and soft (I would say falling off the bone if there were bones). It was slightly sweet, slightly honey tasting, with raisins and a few slices of sweet potatoes on the side. The rest of my party really enjoyed it; I found it a bit oily though. The Mhammar chicken was dry, especially the breast meat; the onion/butter sauce that it came with helped somewhat. The sweet lamb came on couscous and a few slices of sweet potato. It was drier than the lamb tagine and wasn't sweet, overall better than the Mhammar chicken but not as good as the lamb tagine. The bistilla was very good! The filo on the top is very crispy and flaky, and on the bottom it's more stretchy (but not soggy); it's somewhat difficult to cut so we ended up eating with our hands. It comes out warm and with powdered sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. I really liked the crispy top/savory chicken/sweet almond combination.

Yelp
Been a while since we were there, but food was excellent, service polite, and the space (used to be a Taco Bell) cozy.

Yelp
Well... I'm kinda disappointed that my tagine didn't come in a tagine, but I'll look past that. Cosy little joint in Ypsi with the rustic Mediterranean feel. It was about 50% full on a Tuesday evening. Not too big, nothing glamorous. It seems very much like a family restaurant, and everyone was very nice. I ordered the Chicken Tagine on rice with the grilled vegetables on the side. It's a big portion, and I like that they didn't overload the dish with rice like they do at most placed. The chicken had some really good flavors. It was moist, although a little too charred in one part. The rice was a bit oily. The grilled vegetables, weren't quite grilled...stewed perhaps? But there were some herbs and spices, and I really liked the way it was made. Couldn't finish it, so I packed it up for lunch. $17 all in - not bad at all for 2 meals.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a different place in the area to grab a bite. This place popped up as a top place to check out. I figured, Why not. The place sits off of Washtenaw and is very easy to pass up as it is small. As we entered the building there were about 6 tables but it was not crowded so we were seated pretty quickly. We decided on the Moroccan wings because you typically can't go wrong with chicken. They were very tasty. Next was a decision on the main entry. I decided on the Lamb Tangine and my friend was getting the Veggie Tangine. I was informed that the Lamb was fresh out. A little let down because my taste buds were anticipating lamb. That was cool because it was later in the day. I decided on the Salmon Tangine instead. The Salmon and the spices mixed well with the salmon, Very tasty. We also tried the Rice pudding for desert. This was one of the best Rice puddings I have had. Very good mix of the ingredients. To my surprise, the Veggie entry was given for free due to there not being any Lamb. Nice touch! Overall, great experience and great staff. The Manager even came out to talk to us to ensure things were going were. We felt pretty special. We will plan to visit again.

Yelp
Last night I was in the mood for Mediterranean food and none of the places in Ann Arbor looked enticing enough, so we decided to check around on Yelp. I am so happy I found this place. We started with the Moroccan Combo appetizer - we chose Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Zalook and Tabouli, unfortunately it was gone before I could take a picture. The zalook was so tasty, smoky, slightly spicy, paired perfectly with the mild hummus and the perfect Baba Ghanoush. The Tabouli was very fresh, different than most you find in stores are other restaurants, it was mostly greens (parsley, mint), almost no bulgur, so for people who are staying away from carbs, that will feel no guilt having this. I had the Chicken Tagine with olives - the most delicious meal I have had in a long time - the flavors, the taste, the smell! The chicken falls off the bone, it is so succulent, so tasty! You can tell it is slow cooked, made with love, it feels like coming home to your mom's cooking. My husband and son had the Chicken Tawook (shish) and they both loved it. They said the chicken was perfectly seasoned and very tender, and the rice was delicious, as were the fries. The portions are very generous and the prices are more than reasonable, actually coming from NYC, I found them low. I'm thinking of going there again tonight and trying as many dishes as possible. And I will definitely come again every time I am in the area.
