Really nice service here, the girl in the front was super pleasant and even spoke some Italian, which felt authentic. I came here because I heard this was an authentic Italian cafe/pasticceria and I had the pistacchio croissant, which was great in terms of flavor. The dough really reminded me of home in Italy and had the slight citrus taste, which is true of a cornetto (unlike a French croissant) However, I was expecting a pistacchio cream on the inside which I saw a dollop of on top, but instead there was some type of pistacchio glaze or jam. It felt a bit misleading since I saw the cream on top. I decided to try the maritozzo, since I still was craving some cream and it really looked amazing and reminded me of a calabrese pastry called graffa which I have been wanting for a long time. However, once I tried it, the bread tasted a bit stale, and the cream was just okay. I really wanted to like it, but I think it was just not made fresh that day. I tried one more pastry after this called the ricottina and it looked like a refreshing cold cream on the outside, with a pistachio cream on the inside, which is what I so badly wanted at this point, but it was a hard textured cream that was a bit too sweet; and again, I think maybe had been not made fresh that day.
I told a few of my friends who live in NYC about this place and really was excited to try it, especially with a renowned chef’s name attached to it, but I really felt disappointed because even though some of the flavors were there, I just felt like nothing I had was fresh. I came at about 5 pm on a Wednesday, so again, maybe that had something to do with it? But if that’s the case, maybe they should not have the pastries out if they can’t hold their freshness by that point of the day, or make less so they sell out while fresh.
I would give it another try if someone told me the pastries were just freshly made and filled with cream, but otherwise, I’m afraid I will have to pass on returning. While the croissant was very fairly priced at $3, I spent $13 total on the other two pastries that I was not happy with and it just didn’t feel so great. Hopefully, other people have a better experience or Casasalvo can improve their pastry making process.
