Yelp
Cascal is currently my favourite Spanish restaurant. Every time I visit, I enjoy such a wonderful experience that I long to return right away.
The restaurant is located on the corner of Castro and California Streets in downtown Mountain View. They don't have a private parking lot, but are within walking distance from a public garage. Sometimes, nearby free street parking can be scored. The venue is lively with an outdoor patio for open air dining. As I write this review, I realize that I have never actually been inside the eatery as all of my visits have been al fresco. According to their website, they have live music every Friday and Saturday from 7:30-10pm during which dancing is encouraged. Noted - must come back on one of those nights with Auntie Marissa and Mom!
Cascal specializes in exotic cocktails, tapas, and paellas, fusing the savoury flavours of Spain with the rich and bold tastes of Latin America. The result is a menu full of bold essences that entice you. Below are a few items that we ordered during my last visit:
Red House Sangria ($13) - Good. Not dry at all.
Crab Tostaditos ($29) - DELISH! The Dungeness crab tastes so fresh! This is a perfect summer dish. Thankfully, they offer this tapa all year round.
Pork Chile Verde ($31) - ¡Qué rico! I don't eat pork much, but this green chile stew, full of big chunks of meat, is so flavourful that I could probably eat it everyday. The pork shoulder is pretty lean which also adds to the awesomeness of this delectable bowl.
Sizzling Shrimp ($21.50) - Guys, this is a must-try, especially if you like shrimp and garlic, because even the smallest bite is packed with irresistible piquancy.
Spanish chorizo (Listed as one of the pintxos offered in the Spanish Tapa Sampler or as an add-on to the Spanish Tortilla for $16) - This bowl of sliced sausage serves up a nice smoky punch of pimentón (smoked paprika).
Patatas bravas ($12) - This is a great side to complement the Spanish chorizo.
Service is excellent at Cascal. On the night of my most recent visit on Thursday, September 12, 2024, our party of seven arrived shortly before close (I'm talking minutes, definitely less than half an hour), hoping to have some food and drinks. The host told us that the kitchen was already closed, but checked with the cooks and came back, saying that since they were still roasting pork, they could still whip up some quick orders and serve us. The waiters assisted us with friendly enthusiasm and warm smiles and, of course, our libations and plates came out in a jiffy. It doesn't get better than this!
