The Best Restaurants in Madison, Wisconsin | Eater Chicago

"Madison’s sandwich scene is having a moment, and Casetta has been leading the way since opening in early 2017. A stable of regular sandwiches — your turkeys, your roast beefs — are themselves gussied up just a little from sub-shop standard, and the menu is further enhanced by a rotating daily special. You’ll want to take advantage of the restaurant’s Instagram feed for advance notice on those specials, and online ordering to secure your bag before they sell out. Don’t skip the chocolate chip cookie, easily one of the region’s best. Online ordering isn’t currently available due to the high volume of orders." - Kyle Nabilcy

Downtown’s sandwich benchmark: house-baked focaccia, sliced-to-order deli meats, and daily specials that sell out. Featured by Eater as essential to Madison’s daytime eating, it’s a smart stop between museums, markets, and lakeside strolls.

The paradigm and Italian sandwiches were absolutely delicious! Packed full of flavor, and paired perfectly with a cold, crispy coke! These are the type of sandwiches I would bring to a picnic date! My friend and I loved it here and are definitely coming back as regulars!

Tricia (Maddaylight)

Google
Recently coworkers noted it as the G.O.A.T., so as someone who loves to cook and is a bit of a foodie I had to try and see if it actually was up to snuff. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely rate it as equal to Alimentari for quality. The prices were reasonable and I would go again. We had the Paradigm, Sullivan, Pasta E Fagioli, Siren Shrub (cherry), A' SICILIANA SODA, and a chocolate chip cookie. The sandwich sizes were large, so next time I would split one or save half for later (we opted to save the soup and bread for the next day).

Google
I stopped through on my lunch break. I had a hard time picking which sandwich because they all looked phenomenal! I got the special off the day, the CBR+. It was a chicken bacon ranch, but it was the best one I've ever had. Highly recommend! I will be going back!

Google
Phenomenal sandwiches and cookies! I had been looking forward to visiting for a few days, and it did not disappoint. Their fresh meat and veggies pair perfectly with the soft, savory focaccia bread. I’d love to try everything on the menu!

Google
Casetta Kitchen and Counter is an awesome spot. I've had several sandwiches and have never been disappointed. The Manzo, in particular, is delicious. I'm not usually a roost beef kinda girl but I am at Casetta. Their focaccia bread is outstanding! The bread alone makes their sandwiches worth getting, but the toppings and flavors elevate the whole sandwich. I love their cozy little space and it's always packed. People know Casetta has the good sammy's. Last, but certainly not least, Casetta's chocolate chip cookies are the best I have ever had. I can taste a sprinkle of salt but I think they might add a pinch of cinnamon or something. Those cookies are out of this world.

We made a trip to Madison from Chicago and Casetta was HIGH on my itinerary. The bread, the deli meat, the sauces… EVERYTHING was so deliciously perfect! The only two things I was bummed about was 1) they were sold out of their renowned and infamous chocolate chip cookies by the time we arrived, and 2) there was no special that included something with a chicken cutlet (every form of their cutlet sandwiches look phenomenal). Nonetheless, we ordered a Hoboken and a Turkey make your own on their focaccia bread and ordered another for the ride back on their hero bread. We savored every bite and would absolutely make the drive back for a delicious sandwich and (hopefully) a chocolate chip cookie!

Google
It should NOT take 30 minutes to make a freaking sandwich!!! By the way, I only took bites from half of this sandwich. That big chunk missing out of the other half is how I took it out of the bag. Waited so long and I was so annoyed that by the time I got my food I didn’t even want it. But the sandwich ended up being SUPER soggy and messy. I didn’t know every freaking sandwich they have is a knife and fork kind of sandwich. I would rate zero stars if I could. Wouldn’t give this to my dog

Google
The Italian sandwich on fresh focaccia bread and pasta fagioli soup were phenomenal! My husband and I discovered this wonderful shop on our first trip downtown, and we will definitely be back for the great service and amazing food.

Yelp
All the raving reviews of Cassetta are SO warranted. I've been wanting to go for so long but due to their hours (10:30-2:30 only on weekdays) it's slightly inconvenient to get there between my class schedule. I did finally go in at around 1:30 on a Wednesday -- next time I will definitely go in earlier as a few things were already sold out! I got a make your own turkey sandwich on foccacia and this was phenomenal. Each of the ingredients tasted fresh and contributed to the overall deliciousness of the sandwich. Despite the large portion size, I finished eating it and immediately wanted more. All the staff were so friendly as well! Missed out on trying the chocolate chip cookie and chicken cutlet but looking forward to those next time!

Yelp
The vibe of the restaurant is alright. It tends to be pretty busy so I either order to go or pickup. I will say the food is kind of overrated. Yes the sandwiches are good but that's just the Italian sandwich. Had the manzo and that one came off pretty greasy and over-sauce. The other one was haboken and it's not the best, it's literally a sandwich with some meat and a big slap of cheese, which can be good but the cheese was as long as the sandwich and height of a regular cheese stick. If you need a sandwich in a hurry then sure, go ahead and get it from here. Otherwise a sandwich from potbelly taste about the same and cheaper

Yelp
The experience I had was my fault rather than anything this establishment did. Went for lunch with my uncle, who was in town visiting, and the sandwich I ordered was their Italian one. I should have ordered a sandwich that complemented their bread, which was great, it was just "light" and didn't contrast well with the heaviness of the Italian meats. I think I would've had a better experience had I ordered a different sandwich, like with turkey or roast beef. Overall, though, it was a good Italian sandwich, it was the contrast between the fillings and their bread that just didn't do much for me. The service was good. Took a while for our order to be completed, but we it was busy. Seemed to be a pretty popular lunch spot, which should be obvious when looking at the hefty size of the sandwiches, which are on fresh baked bread, and the affordable prices. Their pricing is better than a sub sandwich chain, and you're getting better quality ingredients all-around, from the bread to the meat and cheese. If I had to nitpick, I would say that the biggest down would be how small the dining area is, and thus the more confined seating. Both my uncle and I aren't exactly social butterflies and would've preferred to have some more separation between ourselves and other diners. I would recommend trying this place out though if you haven't. I think the limited menu is good idea and allows them to focus on a real quality sandwich. Maybe my Italian one would've been better on the focaccia instead. Either way, if I return, I think I would try one of their other specialty sandwiches over the Italian.

Yelp
I took out lunch on a Monday. Meatball 3.0 - Monday special was my entree. In fact for the past couple of weeks I was trying to get this sandwich, but went out of stock before I ordered. The sandwich was really good, and flavorful. There was 3 meatballs in it, probably that is why it is named meatball 3.0.

Yelp
Went yesterday to finally try their sandwiches, because I've heard so many good things. Arrived at 1:30, they close at 2:30. They were sold out of bread-all their types of bread. I hate to be picky, but when they have such short hours (10:30-2:30), I would think they would have enough bread to last during that time-especially considering their focus is bread sandwiches. We were suggested by staff to order the day ahead for pick up.

Yelp
Looking forward to allegedly the best sandwich spot in Madison. Difficult to park downtown so I stick $1.50 in the machine and walk 2 blocks to the restaurant. 11:30 am on a Friday and they're closed. Not a soul around. No note on the door. I'll try again but very disappointed on the first attempt.
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I'm downtown Madison I always mean to stop here and finally did and I said to myself "why did it take me so long to get here." The bread and the meats and the cheeses are out of this world bonkers good. It was worth the parking ticket to snag this lunch.
google avatar

Yukie X.

Yelp
A quick easy lunch spot with fresh ingredients and friendly staffs. There was seriously nothing bad I can say about my experience. You get a huge filling sandwich for the price, and definitely worth the visit!
google avatar

Mallory M.

Yelp
All time favorite sandwich shop ever. When i lived in Madison I would try to go here every time that I could. Only thing is that their hours are weird (only open from 10:30-2:30) so if I had class i wouldn't be able to go. But boy oh boy would i go there every single day if i could. I usually built my own sandwich on the focaccia bread. That bread and those ingredients were so fresh and tasty. The fresh mozzarella, prosciutto and balsamic glaze combo will get me EVERY TIME!! I love it and miss Casetta so much. Cannot wait to go back.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
I'm not a huge sandwhich person but this place was recommended to me and I really enjoyed it. The hours are a bit inconvenient but makes it all the more special when you do find time to go. The staff were friendly and food was made quickly. The bread was the best bread I have had in my entire life. I had the Sullivan. It was good and I would get again but also am excited to try other things in the menu

Craig T.

Yelp
Amazing lunch spot with great vibe and even better fresh sandwiches. Must stop at lunch when you're in Madison.
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
This place rocked my world. I was in town for work and looking for something to pick up for lunch in the area. The pictures of these sandwiches on Yelp influenced me to stop by. The line was long but they have friendly and efficient service. Next time I would certainly order ahead online because they were probably dealing with 20 in store and 30 online orders at a time, cranking em out. You have to get this sandwich on their focaccia which was absolutely divine. Probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

Yelp
Casettas had been on my bucket list for a while. Finally had the chance to try their sandwiches out one afternoon for lunch. The place gets busy! Luckily made it in time before the lunch rush and got seating immediately. I ordered the Paradigm (a delicious combo of spicy soppressata, mozz, dressed arugula, tomatoes, and roasted peppers). The paradign was so good! The sandwich i requested was served on their in-house baked focaccia which was really airy and delicious (you can choose to choose your bread). We also got the Manzo (roast beef, provolone, dressed arugula, and hot giardiniera). The Manzo was a great tasting sandwich (personally Paradigm was still my fav). Both sandwiches were ~$13 each and I thought the price was worth the taste, flavor, and portion sizes. Will definitely return (my one critique is that they're only open for lunch / late afternoon on weekdays, so it's definitely hard to make the time to visit during work). Would recommend!

Yelp
With homemade focaccia, daily rotating sandwiches and incredible sides, Casetta Kitchen is one of my favorite Madison spots. Although the store is small, there are usually always places to sit and the staff is very kind. Pictured was a Friday special; with chicken cutlet, arugula, ricotta, and spicy sauce. My favorite is "the paradigm" (also pictured) with spicy sopperessata, mozzarella, spicy tomato vinaigrette, mayo, arugula; and roasted peppers.
google avatar

Yelp
Having read the great reviews the last few years this place was on my list to try. Covid got in the way and it only being open for lunch did not help. Finally on a glorious sunny Friday we rode our bikes into town and stopped. That great weather brought out everyone. The line was very long. I heard someone exclaim that they have never seen the line that long. I should have ordered ahead of time on-line but it was too late. Actually the line moved quickly and the order itself came out surprisingly fast. We split the Italian on focaccia and I added soppressata and garlic aioli. The bread was excellent - very fresh. The sandwich with my modifications was quite tasty. The only downside - was the sandwich really worth $15??? I have tried Casettas so no need to rush back despite it being good.

Yelp
Not that Casetta needs more 5 star reviews, but let's just say it is one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. After following on Instagram for a year, my friend and I finally decided to give it a go. He typically gets the Manzo, so I followed suit, and I was not disappointed. The shop is located in a building off of the Capitol and is just the cutest little aesthetic. There was no line when we went in (1PM on a Friday) but I am sure that varies a bunch. The hours are a bit odd, 11-2:30, but I don't think it really matters given the quality of the food. The best things come in small doses? The focaccia bread is simply amazing, and everything in between was the perfect combination of flavors. The dijon vinaigrette (I think is what it is called) was something I was skeptical about but pulled the sandwich together in the best way possible. Service was fast, staff were kind, and it was just an all around great experience. Will definitely be returning to give some of their daily specials a try or something with fresh mozzarella. Certainly a quick favorite.
google avatar

Cherise K.

Yelp
THE BEST SANDWICH SHOP IN MADISON. Hands down. The only issue is that it is only open 10-2pm M-F, which really limits the time I can actually get my hands on this amazing sandwich. My go to is the Paradigm. You cannot go wrong with it. It is the perfect combination of flavors and you HAVE to get it on the focaccia. No exceptions. What is great is that you can order this online and pick it up to take to the park or grab lunch here and coffee shop hop til the bars open at 4 after getting a late lunch. Either way, love this place, cannot rave about it enough, everything on the menu is good and i just wish the hours were longer!
google avatar

Yelp
Casetta is a definitely a favorite of mine for casual lunch in Madison. The salted chocolate chip cookie is to die for...I could absolutely eat a dozen of these in one sitting. If you're stopping in for a quick bite, a cookie for dessert is an absolute must!!! I love all the sandwiches, especially the Italian. The bread is always nice and soft and the ingredients are super fresh. You don't want to miss out on Casetta!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
Yum! I made my own with turkey and capicola-- but what makes the sandwich is the delicious fresh squishy focaccia bread. What a good sandwich!
google avatar

Ellena K.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Madison - must try!! I wish they were open more hours. Takeout and dine-in are great. Staff is always very kind and helpful, even with how busy they get. Don't forget to get a homemade chocolate chip cookie!
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
10/10 recommend and hands down the best sandwich in Madison! If you have not been here you are missing out. Very friendly staff and they crank out the food very quick. Expect to wait in line for a few minutes but you will be eating very soon after ordering. I made my own sandwich and was very happy with it. The ciabatta is a must try and I would suggest that to anyone who goes here especially for the first time. I wish I could have tried the chicken cutlet or chocolate chip cookie but they were sold out a few minutes after noon. This is a hidden downtown gem but those who know, KNOW! Check it out!

Julia O.

Yelp
If you want a sandwich there's nowhere else you should go but Casetta. Best sandwiches in town. Get the focaccia bread. I love adding hot giardinera relish and the Dijon vinaigrette to my sandwiches. Garlic aioli is also a great add. Daily sandwich specials so there's always something different to try. The pasta e figioli soup is outstanding. And their chocolate chips cookies are some of the best in Madison. Also recommend the spicy chickpeas side. They get busy!! If you don't want a long wait, I suggest ordering ahead online. Sometimes they get so busy they have to shut down online ordering for the day. At those times I've actually been pretty lucky to walk right in without much wait. There are tables to eat in but at peak times it can be hard to get a spot.
google avatar

Courtney T.

Yelp
That classic Casetta pic This lunch time hot spot tapped in to so many big city feels for me. Big city's always have the best local sandwich shops & thanks to Casetta, we have right here in Madison. I had the paradigm and it's now converted me to a sandwich girl. ‍
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
incredible food and the kindest staff ever!! also love the christmas decor would love to dine in here sometime but yalls hours are so anti worker hours wishing for weekend hours id be here every week!!!
google avatar

Brianna C.

Yelp
Idk how accurate hidden gem would be. But this place is quite incredible. Despite the crowd, they always do their best to keep things moving. Their in house focaccia (spell check?) bread is heavenly. The staff is always nice despite being crowded from opening to close. The place is small but always clean! They offer complimentary water as well. Staple place to visit while in madison.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
Great sandwiches! Delicious sea salt chocolate chip cookies! Their order ahead and pick up program seems to work okay with a spacious lobby area to wait for your food to be ready. Wish they had better delivery options, though. If so, we would order from them a lot more often!
google avatar

Hanna G.

Yelp
WOW! Casetta was soo good!! There sandwiches are delicious and the bread is incredible. I loved the Thursday Roast Beef special! I will definitely be coming back to try more of their subs and specials.
google avatar

Corbin B.

Yelp
Good sandwich! Real nice quick service. I got the turkey on a hoagie. Next time I'll have to try the Italian on focaccia.

Michael F.

Yelp
One of the best sandwich places in Madison. Great variety, fresh ingredients and super attentive staff.

Megan D.

Yelp
I love this place, I really do, but after driving from the west side of Madison to downtown EARLY to get an eggplant special that they rarely have anymore AND suddenly not allowing people to order online, then getting to order after being in a long line and they are SOLD OUT before noon, well, that's ridiculous. There aren't many vegetarian options besides the vegetalian (which I had previously and was fine but then was not great the second time I had it) it was a disappointment to drive 25 minutes to not get the other vegetarian option. I just think it needs to be fair and they need to work on their ordering system. Let people order online like you usually do. The food is so good and I use to come often (like a few times a month) but now it's once every several months because of this happening on more than one occasion. Hopefully they get it figured out and improve their specials (seems like everything is chicken) like they use to!
google avatar

Jody M.

Yelp
This is not just a sandwich place. You will never look a sandwich in the eye the same again. Profoundly yummy turkey sandwich piled high enough to share (which I do). Great pro staff - a hidden gem for downtown working stiffs and anyone else.
google avatar

Nibuz E.

Yelp
Ok..so..Casetta. How is this place so good?! My appreciation for Casetta is that (in my opinion) there is no better place in town to get top tier sandwiches! What's even more rare is that no matter which sandwich I've tried, it's always been made with fresh ingredients, good balance, amazing bread, and an overall amazing taste. Super happy to have Casetta in town as a "go to" sandwich spot that always hits the spot! P.s., The cookies are also amazing!
google avatar

Akihiro I.

Yelp
I had a turkey sandwich. It was one of the best turkey sandwiches that I ever had. Just perfect balance of everything.
google avatar

Juan M.

Yelp
This place did live up to the hype, I visited while visiting Madison for the day and read about this place in a magazine. I visited right after opening so no line or waiting around, couldn't decide between the chicken cutlet sandwich or the Italian so ordered both. The chicken sandwich was tasty but the Italian was amazing, def get the Italian if undecided.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
The Italian sandwich. Perfectly and precisely made with fresh ingredients, including made from scratch bread very fresh vegetables, and amazing service.

Sarah R.

Yelp
They have the BEST sandwiches in the city, seriously! Their focaccia is amazing and the cookies are to die for. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Daniel G.

Yelp
Really lives up to all the hype. Wife and I split an Italian + Sob Rock (one of the weekly specials) as well as two cookies. Hands down the best Italian sub I've ever had. The Sob Rock was incredible as well. Insanely tender chicken and wonderful focaccia. If you love sandwiches you need to try Casetta.
google avatar

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been blown away from a lunch meal, but wow this place blew me away! I can't believe it's been around for over 2 years and I'm just trying it now. Casetta is kind of tucked away with only a adoor on the outside view and next to a large corporate building. Inside, it turns into an L shape with bar seating, 1 row or small tables and then some larger high top tables for bigger parties. To drink, I ordered a bloody mary which was just OK, but my friend got the mimosa with half orange and half grapefruit juice, which tasted so light and refreshing. Everything we ordered for food was a must-get in my book! We ordered: -Loaded Hasbrown [porchetta, provolone, hot giardiniera, dijon aioli, fried egg]: There's a large disk of a hashbrown at the bottom that is so unbelievably crispy and surprisingly not oily! Mix it in with everything and it was the perfect bite. -Final Act Sandwich [mortadella, capicola, provolone, arugula, tomato, onion, mayo, Italian vinaigrette] - Highly recommend opting for the focaccia bread. The bread was fluffy and perfectly soaked up all the vinaigrette. There was a generous heap of deli meat within and the vegetables brightened up every bite. This was incredibly delicious. For dessert: Chocolate chip cookie - one of the most perfect cookies I have ever had. There was a crunch on the outside but the inside was still soft. Instead of chocolate chips, they are more like chocolate disks, creating lots of layers of chocolate. Lastly, the sprinkled salt on top elevated this cookie to another level. This is one of their most-known for items. Only 30-40 cookies made a day, so be sure to call in to save yours! We ended up getting the last cookie of the day. I will 100% be back here! Still dreaming about that cookie...
google avatar

Ericka B.

Yelp
Went here on a Friday for lunch and could not believe how packed the place was! They were out of quite a bit of food when we got there, including one of the bread choices, but we still were able to order the sandwiches that we wanted. Although, I think we got the last of the bread for our group. It was all amazing!! I did a create your own turkey sandwich and was a big fan. The bread provided a great catch-all for the hot pepper juice and the mustard, yet still remained crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It was also packed with turkey. I ordered the half sandwich and I was stuffed! My friend ordered a whole final act, and I have no idea how he managed to finish it all. He commented that the bread was perfect, soft, yet not doughy, and the perfect ratio to the sandwich insides. The meat was piled high, like a fine work of art. He said that its the best sandwich that he has had in town, and he's lived here his whole life. High quality ingredients leading to tasty food! Did I mention that the slice the meat in front of you. When you look at the photos of the sandwiches on the website you think, they can't possibly be as good as they look, but then you try them and they are better! Needless to say, we are big fans of this place and can't wait until they reopen so we can go back.
google avatar

Jane H.

Yelp
Fantastic sandwiches and the best focaccia in Madison. My roommates and I love going here on Wednesdays for the chicken cutlet special. These huge sandwiches are a great value for the high quality ingredients. Definitely recommend stopping here next time you're in Madison near the capitol.
google avatar

Ella S.

Yelp
Casetta never disappoints! Such a great weekday lunch spot, we've tried so many of their sandwiches over time! They always have fun specials in addition to their classics. I'm personally a bigger fan of their deli meat sandwiches than their chicken cutlet, but all were good. Taking off a star because they have kinda hard hours, wish they were open more!
google avatar

Mallory B.

Yelp
Truly amazing sandwiches. High qual ingredients, fresh bread, and, as many others have noted, don't sleep on the cookies!!! My only complaint is I can't get them on the weekend :'(

Vela S.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place, hands down one of the best sandwich shops in downtown Madison. I wish I learned about this place soon because the food and the vibes in general were amazing. The cashier was so sweet and helpful since was my first time there. I got the Paradigm on focaccia and I am drooling just think about it. Would definitely be back soon!
google avatar

T T.

Yelp
Best sandwiches we've had since moving to the Midwest. The Hoboken is my favorite, and I'm from New Jersey. I always add arugula to the Hoboken Sandwich (A-plus combo). My partner has tried the Italian and Paradigm, both of which are good. Always get their sandwiches on the foccacia. So soft! I also enjoy their chocolate chip cookies, but it's often so out so order early. Casetta is always consistent with their quality and flavor, as well as speedy!
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
Delicious, and simply tasty sandwiches. Local is where it's at!!! Quality all the way!
google avatar

Kate P.

Yelp
The best sandwiches in Madison. I really look forward to the Friday specials. Don't forget to grab one of the amazing chocolate chip cookies with your sandwich!
google avatar

Sean K.

Yelp
Casetta offers the best and most consistent sandwiches in Madison. Fast and friendly staff and a lovely spot for lunch with efficient online ordering available as well. Every sandwich is stellar, but the Hoboken and Turkey are standouts. Grab a chocolate chip cookie if you're lucky enough to have the chance.
google avatar

Collin M.

Yelp
Top notch sandwiches and cookies! To be honest I was slightly disappointed the first time I visited Casetta back when they initially opened. After giving it another shot I have absolutely fallen in love with their food! The real key here is to get the focaccia bread for your sandwich - there is seriously nothing better. Overall the sandwiches are amazing, they give generous portions of meat and have an amazing variety with some really great specials each day. Give this place a shot and you won't be disappointed. Special tip: get the chocolate chip cookie they have - it is absolutely fantastic with layers of chocolate mixed in somehow topped with salt. Yum!
google avatar

Kate E.

Yelp
WHEN CAN I GO BACK. This was the best sammy I've had in a long time - the Italian. And they even have gluten free bread which was toasted to perfection. The amount of meat on this thing was unbelievable and the best combo of ingredients for the perfect balance of flavors. My husband had the Final Act on focaccia and also said it was amazing. Not sure if this place is considered a "hidden gem" because of its location in an office building but regardless, it is a true gem. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I found Casetta's near the capital to be within walking distance of the work I was doing in Madison. I'm so sad I didn't go here on my first day because I have had lunch here for the fourth time in a row. The handcrafted sandwiches are amazing with a blend of texture in ingredients that don't overwhelm one aspect of the flavor resulting in a delightful meal. The Pasta e Fagioli is AMAZING and one of the very reasons why I have ventured here for lunch during sub zero days. The sausages in the soup are not a big "sausage chunk" like most soups have; it's finely ground to ensure each bite has ground sausage mixed with the fine acini di pepe pasta (had to ask them about the name). Overall the food is as amazing as the atmosphere, a place I'm glad I found and plan to visit for more lunches.
