Tuscany's Castle Hotels Are Bastions of Tranquility

"Castello di Spaltenna, in the heart of the Chianti wine country, was a monastery first, then a castle, and now it’s a fairly expansive resort-style hotel whose 37 rooms are spread between the medieval castle building and a couple of outbuildings." - Mark Fedeli

Castello di Spaltenna Exclusive Resort & Spa (Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Only in Tuscany do you have to specify exactly which thousand-year-old castle-turned-boutique-hotel you’re talking about. Castello di Spaltenna, in the heart of the Chianti wine country, was a monastery first, then a castle, and now it’s a fairly expansive resort-style hotel whose 37 rooms are spread between the medieval castle building and a couple of outbuildings. A spa, two pools, and plenty of space to roam are among its attractions; the cellar lists hundreds of labels, including some grown on site, and the restaurants include a tavern and terrace, an osteria, and the Michelin-starred Il Pievano." - Tablet Hotels

Castello di Spaltenna | Best places to stay in Tuscany

"This medieval stone castle and hamlet is set in extensive grounds on a wooded hillside in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine-producing area. Parts of the beautifully-restored monastery-turned-castle date from 1,000 AD; the main building wraps around a lovely courtyard where gourmet meals are served in summer. The bedrooms here, accessed by a warren of stone staircases and passages, are full of character; those in the outbuildings less so. Spaltenna, which lies just outside the pretty village of Gaiole, makes a great base for exploring this lovely area of Chianti and its famous wine estates. Florence is an hour by car and Siena 40 minutes. The gourmet-style Pievano restaurant serves elegant, Michelin-starred meals in the candlelit courtyard while Bistecca alla Fiorentina and other more rustic dishes are on offer at the more relaxed La Terrazza. We stayed at Castello di Spaltenna in Chianti during our honeymoon and, unfortunately, the experience was disappointing overall. I had reserved far in advance and noted it was a special trip, but upon arrival (later in the evening) we were taken to a very odd room located upstairs in what felt like an attic. While it did have a nice balcony, the rest of the space was dark and uninviting, with only a few small skylights providing light. The shower had no window or lighting, and there was an awkward sitting area with a long couch and table—no decor, pillows, or warmth. There was also a small second “bedroom” with a daybed that seemed unnecessary and unfinished.||The main bedroom itself was fine but did not resemble the photos on the website. I understand the property is a converted historic building, but the decor was subpar and lacked the charm and romance we expected. We had booked one of their mid-level rooms that advertised two sinks, yet ours had only one. It was late when we arrived, so the hotel could not move us until the following day, which we appreciated—but they initially seemed dismissive of our concerns, saying the room was “big,” as if that made up for the lack of ambiance.||We had dinner that night at the Osteria, which was mediocre, and the whole situation left a poor first impression. The staff did not offer any compensation for the inconvenience, and my husband had to ask for a small adjustment to our bill, which ended up being about €75 off—barely reflective of the frustration and lost night.||The room we moved to the next day, however, was beautiful. It had lovely views, double sinks, a shower with natural light and dual shower heads, and thoughtful amenities like a mini fridge that had been missing from the first room. The grounds of the hotel are stunning, with sweeping views of Chianti and a gorgeous pool area. The location is also excellent—very central and close to a charming town down the hill with great restaurants.||Overall, while the setting is undeniably beautiful, our experience did not match the high expectations we had based on the website and reviews. Better communication, consistency in room quality, and more genuine hospitality would have gone a long way toward improving our stay.

Google
Beautiful spot, wonderful food, relaxing spa, and friendly people. The location is beautiful. Right in the hills of Tuscany. Peaceful and quiet. Very friendly team of folks. Breakfast, lunch, pool and dinner. Marilena took great care of our family at dinner every night. Our daughters loved her! The Michelin star restaurant was INCREDIBLE!! The indoor and outdoor pool was clutch on summer afternoons. Spa was first class. Steam, sauna, Jacuzzi, cold showers. Great spot, warm hospitality, would easily return!

Google
Amazing stay and experience at Castello di Spaltenna! The staff were so nice and helpful. The room was nice, well kept and AC was great during the hot climate. The morning breakfast was perfect and the restaurants were great. You can’t beat that pool location and view of the Tuscany landscape.

Google
Amazing place. The rooms are great and the view at breakfast across vines and olive groves will never get old. Gaiole is a lovely village and plenty of quality vineyard tours in the vicinity.

Google
A pleasant and well-maintained hotel offering a comfortable stay. However, the pricing feels somewhat excessive given the overall value provided. The location is adequate, though noticeably removed from the city's more vibrant and desirable attractions, which may pose a slight inconvenience for those wishing to explore the area more easily.

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst touring Tuscany, and a very pleasant time we had!|The hotel is set above Gaiole with beautiful views across the hills. Our room was very quiet with a lovely private balcony, and enough space for a few days stay. Since we were touring we did not unpack, and the fact that there were two suitcase stands was very helpful. The air conditioning was a little loud, but not enough to lose my 5 star rating. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom functional. Everywhere was nicely cleaned and well presented.||There is a fantastic pool with sun-beds, umbrellas, and some nice shady trees;a delightful place to unwind after a hard day’s holidaying!||We did not dine in the Michelin starred restaurant, but breakfast on the terrace was excellent, as were the lunchtime snacks which were taken at the same place. In the evenings we strolled down to the town for dinner.||This is a very nice hotel with friendly staff, comfortable rooms and good amenities. Well worth considering!

Google
Castello du Spaltenna is a really nice 5-star hotel. The staff is super serviceminded and friendly. The place is very nice and original. The Michelin restaurant is really good and so is the Osteria. The pool is nice and has a great view over the Tuscan hills. The small town of Gaiole in Chianti is within walking distance and has some good restaurants and bars. Very recommendable.

Google
The reception has you parking up 150 yards away, then advising your arrival and you sitting around waiting for a porter to drive your luggage back to the hotel. Why? Rooms were dingy and dark, we had the third in the line of 5x mini-suites. The pool was nice but a walk away, and packed with fat Americans doing their white lotus... we ate at the Michelin restaurant, and it was good, the staff were great, the food lived up, but the hotel sadly didn't. We sat waiting for the chap in the barrow to come and get the luggage again... I thought it missed, stay somewhere else and eat at Castello, but don't do the double.

Yelp
The location and setting is truly beautiful! The Michelin dinner 14 course Mr Hyde was a true delight. Would recommend to all, but only suggestion would be not a place for very young children

Yelp
The hotel had beautiful views of the countryside and Tuscany's iconic rolling greens. We had a beautiful room, with purple flowers outside, and had a nice spacious living room and bathroom. The bath products were amazing, loved the LED lights in the shower and I loved how we had complimentary turndown service with chocolates. We spent a day at the pool which was very relaxing! We ended our pool day in the spa where we were able to use the sauna, steamroom, and jacuzzi. The hotel had a gorgeous outdoor pool, but for the cooler months there's also an indoor pool. The hotel's morning breakfast was amazing! They had everything from sweet waffles, pancakes, croissants to cheeses and meats, salmon, bacon and eggs, not to mention fresh fruit and yogurt bar. They also have many restaurants, including La Terrazza Restaurant and Il Pievano. Il Pievano has light dishes and is Michelin-starred / rated, while La Terrazza is your more casual dining also where breakfast was served every morning.

Yelp
Amazing find for our Tuscan adventure. With all of the options on where to stay in Tuscany, I'm glad we chose Spaltenna. We had a beautiful room, with lemon trees outside, and had a nice spacious living room and bathroom. The bath products were amazing, loved the LED lights in the shower and I loved how we had complimentary turn down service! It was a bit chilly when we visited so we weren't able to enjoy the amenities. The grounds are stunning and we had great views of the vineyards from the restaurant. We grabbed late night drinks in the basement restaurant where breakfast was served each day. The coffee was an absolute hit! There is also a game area and the concierge was helpful in getting us to other wineries. We enjoyed talking with the potter on site and bought some bottles of wine and olive oil to send home for our drinking and dining pleasure. I even bought some olive oil dishes for friends. Overall, great choice to stay at. They even gave us a parting gift which we love a lot. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Our family enjoyed three nights at Castello di Spaltenna. The rooms were beautiful and the staff were lovely. It is exactly what you would think a Tuscan castle would be like. The grounds were exquisite and the hotel was up to date in every way. The pool, spa, workout facility and tennis court were perfect to unwind after a day of travel. The hotel was filled with little "hide aways" and quiet nooks to sit and enjoy the scenery and relax. The food was delicious too with a wonderful breakfast selection each morning. The location near Siena was ideal. Castello di Spaltenna was easy to get to, but you felt a world away! We will definitely go back.

Yelp
This place is breathtaking. Here for my honeymoon and blown away. Had dinner at the formal restaurant and everything was so unique and delicious. Beautiful room with an amazing view. Can't go wrong staying here. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This was our honeymoon choice in Italy. It was amazing! Friendly staff wonderful rooms with champagne, flowers and wine awaiting us upon arrival. Wish we had a few more days here but will be back on future anniversaries. Highly 100% recommend this for any occasion!

Yelp
The hotel is in a wonderful setting and easily accessible for exploring local towns and villages. The staff are very friendly and are keen to make your stay as enjoyable as possible with helpful advice. Our one disappointment was the room which seemed cramped for a "superior" room and the bathroom was small. The views were not particularly good. We were shown other options for our return in August and have agreed much improved "superior" rooms.

Yelp
It was heaven! We arrived on a surprisingly lukewarm December day. The ambiance is truly breathtaking and will definitely make an impression. Th staff are phenomenally friendly. Our room was quite lovely. It looks very medieval, but the bathrooms are just heavenly! The perfect mixture of classical and modern architecture. The restaurant was out of this world. The staff, ambiance and food were worth it. The dinner was multi-course and each dish had a fresh distinctive palate. The desserts are superbly fresh. I recommend trying one of the special items for the main dish. Our compliments to the chef! The hotel has wonderful amenities. I would definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
My husband and I traveled Italy for our honeymoon. Our second stop was Tuscany and we stayed at the Castello di Spaltenna resort. I gave it 4 stars for how beautiful this place and the grounds are and for the people who were work there. It was so beautiful it would be a perfect place to get married. We were there for 4 days and after we toured around Tuscany the first 3 days, our 4th day was just for relaxing around the resort. We needed it and it couldn't have been more perfect. I didn't give it 5 stars for these reasons: Our room was freezing! We were there in April and the heat wasn't working that great. Also, the bed was so uncomfortable I kept tossing and turning, not sure about the other rooms, maybe the beds were better. And lastly because of the food. Breakfast was great...but dining at their restaurants, which there are 2 of, the food wasn't that good and it was ridiculously expensive. We ended up going into town to eat. Overall we did enjoy it and would recommend it.

Yelp
GORGEOUS HOTEL. It is beautiful and classy yet retains that sense of the old world. It's an 11th century castle and you can feel it! The breakfast is DELICIOUS - bacon, all types of juices, cheese, meats, croissants, and cappacino brought to your table.

Yelp
Perfect location. Beautiful room with private patio overlooking the mountains. Superb service. Best breakfast ever. Delightful experience. Pure bliss.
