Tuscany's Castle Hotels Are Bastions of Tranquility

"Castello di Spaltenna, in the heart of the Chianti wine country, was a monastery first, then a castle, and now it’s a fairly expansive resort-style hotel whose 37 rooms are spread between the medieval castle building and a couple of outbuildings." - Mark Fedeli

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst touring Tuscany, and a very pleasant time we had!|The hotel is set above Gaiole with beautiful views across the hills. Our room was very quiet with a lovely private balcony, and enough space for a few days stay. Since we were touring we did not unpack, and the fact that there were two suitcase stands was very helpful. The air conditioning was a little loud, but not enough to lose my 5 star rating. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom functional. Everywhere was nicely cleaned and well presented.||There is a fantastic pool with sun-beds, umbrellas, and some nice shady trees;a delightful place to unwind after a hard day’s holidaying!||We did not dine in the Michelin starred restaurant, but breakfast on the terrace was excellent, as were the lunchtime snacks which were taken at the same place. In the evenings we strolled down to the town for dinner.||This is a very nice hotel with friendly staff, comfortable rooms and good amenities. Well worth considering!

Amazing stay and experience at Castello di Spaltenna! The staff were so nice and helpful. The room was nice, well kept and AC was great during the hot climate. The morning breakfast was perfect and the restaurants were great. You can’t beat that pool location and view of the Tuscany landscape.

The reception has you parking up 150 yards away, then advising your arrival and you sitting around waiting for a porter to drive your luggage back to the hotel. Why? Rooms were dingy and dark, we had the third in the line of 5x mini-suites. The pool was nice but a walk away, and packed with fat Americans doing their white lotus... we ate at the Michelin restaurant, and it was good, the staff were great, the food lived up, but the hotel sadly didn't. We sat waiting for the chap in the barrow to come and get the luggage again... I thought it missed, stay somewhere else and eat at Castello, but don't do the double.

Castello di Spaltenna was truly paradise! It is located in Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany. Originally, back in the 12th century, this was a monastery. Our room was very spacious and impeccably clean. There was more than enough closet space, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very big. The views from our room, as well as all the grounds, were absolutely breathtaking. The pictures do not do it justice. It is that beautiful! The service and attention were excellent. Everyone was very welcoming, friendly, and very eager to help with questions or anything we needed. Ms Celeste and Jemma (my apologies if I misspelled) were so kind and gracious and made our stay extra special. Breakfast was included, and it is located on the terrace, overlooking the gorgeous hills and vineyards that surround the hotel. Everything they served was excellent, and there was a variety of food. They also serve lunch in the same area, not included, and it is also delicious. There is an awesome infinity pool with sun-beds, umbrellas, and some surrounding trees that provide plenty of shady areas to keep cool and enjoy the beauty of Tuscan nature. There is also an indoor heated pool, which is definitely nice if you are there when the weather is not quite warm enough for an outdoor pool. There is also a very nice spa where you can book all types of great, relaxing services. You get an hour of complimentary spa time, which you need to book with some time in advance. For dinner, there are 2 on-site options. L'Osteria offers a casual dining experience, and they serve typical dishes from the region. The food was so delicious and the service was excellent. The second restaurant, Il Pievano, is a 5-star Michelin restaurant. We did not get the chance to dine there as we loved taking strolls into the town to dine where the locals go. I did not include the kid friendly category in my review as we were there at the end of May, so there weren't any family with children at the time. But judging from the all around excellent experience, I am sure it is a great place for families with kids. For transportation, you definitely need to either rent a car or book a car service. If you plan on staying in the area, the main town area is close in walking distance. We look forward to going back. We highly recommend Castello di Spaltenna.

If I could give less than one star, I would. Disappointing experience. We traveled from NYC for a friend’s wedding. We invited them to breakfast the next morning but the hotel was NOT accommodating. They would not allow outside guests. They were very strict. We offered for them to come at the end of breakfast. They still said no. ANd to note — breakfast was not full and they had buffet style with plenty of food. This didn’t feel very « Italia ». There was zero flexibility. It is a Little strict in my view for thé Price you pay especially when on a vacation.

The Spaltenna well deserves to be included in the best small hotels in the world. Located on the top of a hill overlooking 1000's of acres across the lush Tuscan countryside, everything about this castle turned hotel is first rate.

The Good: The place looks even better than the pictures. The infinity pool is the star of the show, but the Tuscan countryside view during breakfast and from the rooms is just as breathtaking. The food that is served, including the breakfast buffet, is incredible (although we did not try the Michelin-star restaurant on the property). Although our room was on the smaller side, it was still an excellent value with a large bathroom and comfortable bed. The Bad (not "bad", but minor annoyances): I understand that they have the "5-star hotel" and "Michelin-star" labels on their hotel and dining respectively, but it appears to have gone to their head a bit too much. The vibe in the dining room, even during the free breakfast buffet, was very stuffy and so quiet you could hear a pin drop. It definitely crossed the line beyond "relaxing" and into "tense" and excessively formal. Even the wait staff seemed quite tense during service. For instance, a waiter brought us a meal that was supposed to go to another table by mistake (no big deal!), and when he realized, he seemed to be in a panic as if he would get in big trouble with his supervisor for such a minor mistake. Beyond the service, we were a bit disappointed to discover that a simple bottle of still water for our table at lunch came out to €8. This is an unacceptable mark-up for water, even for a 5-star hotel. Lastly, housekeeping was very inconsistent with regards to the frequency they would come to clean the rooms. They were either borderline invasive and knocking on our door every 3-5 hours during the day or would not come at all...it was very strange. Although my review seems very critical, I still consider our time here to be well spent and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a luxury experience with breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside.

One thing that we did like was the Infinity Swimming Pool. It had very beautiful sightseeing and looked very nice. The hotel's location was great and it was a short distance to the city historical center. The hotel was nothing special. The conditioner worked poorly, breakfast was very basic, and the room was quite small. One surprising aspect was that the hotel provided worn-out plastic wine glasses for drinking wine. We agree that this hotel does not deserve a 5-star rating. I believe it is possible to find something cheaper and more authentic in Tuscany.

Yelp
The location and setting is truly beautiful! The Michelin dinner 14 course Mr Hyde was a true delight. Would recommend to all, but only suggestion would be not a place for very young children

Yelp
The hotel had beautiful views of the countryside and Tuscany's iconic rolling greens. We had a beautiful room, with purple flowers outside, and had a nice spacious living room and bathroom. The bath products were amazing, loved the LED lights in the shower and I loved how we had complimentary turndown service with chocolates. We spent a day at the pool which was very relaxing! We ended our pool day in the spa where we were able to use the sauna, steamroom, and jacuzzi. The hotel had a gorgeous outdoor pool, but for the cooler months there's also an indoor pool. The hotel's morning breakfast was amazing! They had everything from sweet waffles, pancakes, croissants to cheeses and meats, salmon, bacon and eggs, not to mention fresh fruit and yogurt bar. They also have many restaurants, including La Terrazza Restaurant and Il Pievano. Il Pievano has light dishes and is Michelin-starred / rated, while La Terrazza is your more casual dining also where breakfast was served every morning.

Yelp
Amazing find for our Tuscan adventure. With all of the options on where to stay in Tuscany, I'm glad we chose Spaltenna. We had a beautiful room, with lemon trees outside, and had a nice spacious living room and bathroom. The bath products were amazing, loved the LED lights in the shower and I loved how we had complimentary turn down service! It was a bit chilly when we visited so we weren't able to enjoy the amenities. The grounds are stunning and we had great views of the vineyards from the restaurant. We grabbed late night drinks in the basement restaurant where breakfast was served each day. The coffee was an absolute hit! There is also a game area and the concierge was helpful in getting us to other wineries. We enjoyed talking with the potter on site and bought some bottles of wine and olive oil to send home for our drinking and dining pleasure. I even bought some olive oil dishes for friends. Overall, great choice to stay at. They even gave us a parting gift which we love a lot. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Our family enjoyed three nights at Castello di Spaltenna. The rooms were beautiful and the staff were lovely. It is exactly what you would think a Tuscan castle would be like. The grounds were exquisite and the hotel was up to date in every way. The pool, spa, workout facility and tennis court were perfect to unwind after a day of travel. The hotel was filled with little "hide aways" and quiet nooks to sit and enjoy the scenery and relax. The food was delicious too with a wonderful breakfast selection each morning. The location near Siena was ideal. Castello di Spaltenna was easy to get to, but you felt a world away! We will definitely go back.

Yelp
This place is breathtaking. Here for my honeymoon and blown away. Had dinner at the formal restaurant and everything was so unique and delicious. Beautiful room with an amazing view. Can't go wrong staying here. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This was our honeymoon choice in Italy. It was amazing! Friendly staff wonderful rooms with champagne, flowers and wine awaiting us upon arrival. Wish we had a few more days here but will be back on future anniversaries. Highly 100% recommend this for any occasion!

Yelp
The hotel is in a wonderful setting and easily accessible for exploring local towns and villages. The staff are very friendly and are keen to make your stay as enjoyable as possible with helpful advice. Our one disappointment was the room which seemed cramped for a "superior" room and the bathroom was small. The views were not particularly good. We were shown other options for our return in August and have agreed much improved "superior" rooms.

Yelp
It was heaven! We arrived on a surprisingly lukewarm December day. The ambiance is truly breathtaking and will definitely make an impression. Th staff are phenomenally friendly. Our room was quite lovely. It looks very medieval, but the bathrooms are just heavenly! The perfect mixture of classical and modern architecture. The restaurant was out of this world. The staff, ambiance and food were worth it. The dinner was multi-course and each dish had a fresh distinctive palate. The desserts are superbly fresh. I recommend trying one of the special items for the main dish. Our compliments to the chef! The hotel has wonderful amenities. I would definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
My husband and I traveled Italy for our honeymoon. Our second stop was Tuscany and we stayed at the Castello di Spaltenna resort. I gave it 4 stars for how beautiful this place and the grounds are and for the people who were work there. It was so beautiful it would be a perfect place to get married. We were there for 4 days and after we toured around Tuscany the first 3 days, our 4th day was just for relaxing around the resort. We needed it and it couldn't have been more perfect. I didn't give it 5 stars for these reasons: Our room was freezing! We were there in April and the heat wasn't working that great. Also, the bed was so uncomfortable I kept tossing and turning, not sure about the other rooms, maybe the beds were better. And lastly because of the food. Breakfast was great...but dining at their restaurants, which there are 2 of, the food wasn't that good and it was ridiculously expensive. We ended up going into town to eat. Overall we did enjoy it and would recommend it.

Yelp
GORGEOUS HOTEL. It is beautiful and classy yet retains that sense of the old world. It's an 11th century castle and you can feel it! The breakfast is DELICIOUS - bacon, all types of juices, cheese, meats, croissants, and cappacino brought to your table.

Yelp
Perfect location. Beautiful room with private patio overlooking the mountains. Superb service. Best breakfast ever. Delightful experience. Pure bliss.
