San Francisco’s 38-Year-Old Castro Coffee Company Is Getting Evicted in June | Eater SF

"A 38‑year‑old coffee shop owned by brothers Ken Khoury and Riyad Khoury (both in their mid‑ to late‑seventies) that has pleaded with the theater's owners to be allowed to stay after being told their lease would not be renewed; according to reporting, they were informed ahead of January 2025 and will be required to vacate by July 1 when APE assumes the master lease for the building." - Paolo Bicchieri

Love this place. Cozy spot with dozens of options for any type of coffee bean you could imagine and cool staff. Latte and Cold Brew this time time to get caffeinated.

Iced hazelnut drip coffee - 5/5 Iced caramel cream drip coffee - 4/5 Iced coffee default flavor - 3/5 tastes bitter Cozy hole in the wall with friendly cashier. Great coffee at reasonable prices. $2.75 for small drip coffee. You can buy beans by the pound

Here's a review for the Castro Coffee Company: --- I recently visited Castro Coffee Company and tried their hazelnut lattes. I have to say, they were absolutely delicious! The flavor was rich and perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of sweetness and a delightful hazelnut aroma. The coffee was smooth and creamy, making it a truly enjoyable experience. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great coffee spot. Can't wait to come back! ---

Google
Spotted this place while on a walk and I'm so glad we stopped by, such great service and coffee. I got a mocha and it had the perfect balance of chocolate and coffee. The man behind the counter was very friendly and gave great recommendations for treats and drinks. They have baked goods and a great assortment of coffee beans. It's a small space once in the shop so a line was forming out on the sidewalk, and masks are a must. For sure stop by here.

Great independent coffee shop. Large selection of pastries and coffee. Friendly staff reasonable price and great location for people watching on Castro street.

I'm not a hot coffee beverage addict by any means, but I do enjoy a flavored, steamy cup of something every now and then. We were on vacay and walking the Castro area in search of a jacket for me. My spouse asked if I wanted something, and I said "Sure, as long as it's not Starbucks." Vacation rule #1 for me: Don't eat/drink at a place you have back home. Enter the Castro Coffee Company. ATMOSPHERE: It's the tiniest of shops, brimming with merchandise and the aroma of freshly brewed beans of the coffea plant. There's absolutely no seats inside, just some outdoor ones on the unprotected sidewalk next to the Castro Theater. MENU: Impressive list of roasts and blends of all kinds, hot and cold beverages, baked goods, and online sales. BEVERAGE: Cafe Mocha Mmm, the perfect balance of cocoa, espresso, milk, and sugar that helped fight off the nip in the air. Believe it or not, this simple drink can get screwed up, but not here! Give it to me regular, no skinny this, shot of that, easy on the whatever... SERVICE: I didn't want to add to the crowd in the little shop if I didn't have to so I waited outside. Spouse reported fast and friendly service. OVERALL: Delish mocha, competitive pricing, support local!

By far the worst place that I've been in San Francisco, I went there and there was a lot of information, it took me a moment to understand and choose what I wanted, meanwhile no one talked to me and the people who worked there just stared at me. Why I'm finally order the drip coffee I was not sure how it worked and I asked the girl that was serving me, and immediately other guy in the room said rude that I just need yo got the coffee and go away, they sold me the coffee and immediately ignore my presence, I was still confused on how it work. I felt really bad about it since english is not my first language and it was my first time in USA. This was the only bad experience that I had in San Francisco, I would never ho back there.

Google
I have been here multiple times, and the coffee is always different. Every time I get a large latte, I get half liquid and half foam. You can even feel the cup super light. Paying close to $10 for steam milk full of air is just messed up.

Yelp
I've purchased my coffee from here for 30+ years (starting when it was the Castro Cheesery), and it continues to be reasonably priced and excellent quality. I have Ray make my own blend of four different coffees and a no. 2 grind, and the quality is always impeccable. Please support this business - it's in danger from the new landlords of the new Castro Theater, and Castro Coffee is a unique, true San Francisco gem!

Samantha D.

Yelp
My parents supported this business when they used to also sell cheese and they had been supporting the Castro Coffee Company for over 30 years. They have both since passed away and now I come here to buy my coffee beans for myself as well as gifts for people that I love. It's a wonderful business with great service. Ken has always treated us like family and was a huge support throughout both of my parents' cancer battles. It is a place I like to visit when I need a boost of love and serotonin. His story is a beautiful one. The energy is always positive here and whenever I'm waiting in line, I often have great conversations with other customers who love the Castro Coffee Company as much as I do. It is truly a special place to me. My favorite Coffee has been the Moka Java Dark that Ken had recommended to us years ago. But they have so many great options. The carrot cake is excellent as are the pastries and teas they sell. This shop has everything you could want including great music and wonderful people. You can't replace this type of shop. It's what makes a community a community.

Yelp
Asked for a medium oat milk cappuccino, she said the milk doesn't foam, which is false as they use a barista mix, but I said OK and ordered a latte instead. The drink was literally half filled, the rest was foam. It was VERY hot. The espresso wasn't very good, but at least the customer service was quick. Being a coffee snob, I won't return here. There are too many coffee spots in SF which are great to justify drinking poorly made coffee.
google avatar

Janelle D.

Yelp
Quick easy service here. The guys behind the counter are friendly and knowledgeable about their roasts! I enjoyed a mid afternoon cappuccino with oat milk on the seating out front.
google avatar

Yelp
Love coming here for coffee beans as they have a wide variety. They are always friendly and informative. The shop is small and you can tell there is a lot of history there. It definitely adds to the vibe which I love.

Yelp
This place smells so divine and amazing each time I step in! A huge selection and variety- if you're a coffee lover like me, you won't be disappointed. Owners are nice people who are very passionate. You can also get a cute mani-pedi done at their nail salon a few doors down too if you so choose! :D Please continue to visit and support until the end of the month.

Yelp
Excellent selection of whole bean coffees. I was a bit turned off by the brewed coffee as it was pre-brewed and in an urn, and self serve. That said, there were several selections and the one I picked (dark) was excellent even though it wasn't brewed real-time.
google avatar

Priyanka L.

Yelp
Collection of coffee and baked items is insane. Order and step outside for others. They also have beans.

Kate T.

Yelp
I have been drinking and ordering whole beans of their Morning Rush blend since the '80's! Turned on to this "GOAT" of a coffee by a San Franciscan relative, I have never found any coffee that could compare to its robust flavour from any coffee roaster anywhere. Trust me, I have tried. Living back & forth across USA with home in Canada, I still order the whole beans directly from proprietor Ken! Castro Coffee is family to me. Even bought a Technivorm Moccamaster Drip machine because this coffee deserves the best brewer!

Yelp
What do you do when you're standing out in the pouring rain waiting for the Castro Theater to open? You go inside the CCC for a gorgeous Americano and marvel at your great decision as you sip a cup of heaven. Inside, you'll find a wall-to-wall selection of the finest beans found around the world. You can get whole beans, or they are happy to grind them for you... but either way your caffeine bliss is one transaction away! You can grab a cup to go, or order whatever your little heart desires from the super nice barista behind the counter and be on your way. If you're lucky enough to snag a table outside, you are sheltered from the sun and rain, and have The Castro to entertain you as long as you wish, or at least as long as that buzz lasts.

Yelp
Super yummy coffee drinks. Ordered for pick up and it was ready for me. Kinda hard to spot when driving by looking for it.
google avatar

Yelp
Buy your beans here. They have lots of flavored beans too and they have flavored coffees on tap that correspond with the holidays which is fun. (Irish Cream at St Patricks Day, and Christmas flavors, etc.) One of the most unique is the Blueberry! I would have never thought of that flavor but it is one of my favorites and I'd only seen it here in the Castro!

Yelp
My new favorite spot to re-up my coffee. Had the pleasure of meeting Matthew who recommended a yummy Medium bag and his wonderful Father. Grabbed a latte and hung out in front and felt right at home. Incredible, charming and kind family atmosphere who clearly loves and cares about their community. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
FANTASTIC! Amazing selection and great prices! Best place to buy coffee beans in San Francisco!

Yelp
Seems the place has been here for some time. Coffee was fine. Pastries are delivered from elsewhere. But the best part is people were genuinely friendly

Tracy T.

Yelp
Visited SF 30 years ago and bought coffee. Had them mail some to my brother in Florida. Went back in May 2025. Saddened to hear about their eviction problem. Wonderful coffee with large variety of flavors

Yelp
7/2/23 gotta try one latte in San Francisco at least once Emna, the friendly barista created our almond milk latte. It's a small coffee shop with seating only outdoors. Perhaps I'm already acclimated to the oatmilk latte that the almond latte tasted less creamy (obviously). I'm sharing with my good friend & he opted for the almond milk. Although the shop boasts of these wonderful beans, I didn't quite sense the aroma & essence of the (?) di Napoli. It was a good cup of latte but in comparison to the many cafes back home...you get my drift. I did appreciate the welcoming attitude that Emna showed. Good spot to just chill on a lazy Sunday if you're from this area or as a tourist It was just a few steps from where we were dropped off (end of the line) from the F-line.

Yelp
A cute coffee business right at the busy intersection of Castro station! I popped by to grab an iced pumpkin spice latte and chilled at one of the outdoor seats, and it seems like a lovely spot to buy coffee beans or get a pastry bar as well. The store smells amazing and the walls are lined with bean options ranging in roast levels and flavor profiles.

Yelp
My go-to for ever. Really nice people. They have a superb coffee selection, all fresh roasted and so many varietals, blends and flavors to choose from. Prices are competitive too. My favorite part about going there is choosing a cup from one of the rotating six fresh pots have available to drink (they have espresso and tea too). Not to be forgotten- tasty tempting treats to accompany your favorite beverage!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic coffee spot with some really good pastries and small bite options. Excellent selection of coffee and the people there are always friendly and quick to get an order out. It's the highlight of my day when I get to stop in there and get a beverage and maybe one of their Keylime tarts or bar, or a quiche, or one of the many different tasty things they offer. I also get my coffee there and they grind it for me and it's awesome. The organic Sumatra is my favorite. Really nice people that always brighten my day when I do business there. Their space is really cool as well. I love their set up with all of the coffees on display and the easily accessible drip coffees with good selection.

Yelp
I think I would've given them 3 stars if the coffee was decent, but I was completely floored by my most recent interaction- and I promise to never return. Popped in on Easter Sunday with my boyfriend for coffee and donuts- we were the only ones in line, and there were a few people outside. I guess the cashier didn't like that my boyfriend took a second to get his card out to pay. I don't see why else she felt the need to angrily snap at him to "FINISH IT UP!" pointing at the card terminal. I'm furious he left her a tip. Given that this would be the second time I've raised this issue to management, I'm inclined to believe this is just business as usual for The Castro Coffee Company.

Fernando P.

Yelp
Great coffee! Great service! Good prices for a cup of coffee. Very nice shop! Parking tough to find.
google avatar

Vickie B.

Yelp
I like flavored coffee beans. I have been coming here for years. The selection is akin to my favorite place to buy coffee in Pittsburgh, Nicholas. Today I had a 12 minute wait for the bus. I wanted banana coffee beans. Perfect. I can get my beans and still catch the bus. Prices are reasonable. I paid just under $12 a pound. Service is pleasant. There are a few baked goods available. And there are a few seats outside because it is always enjoyable to people watch in the Castro.

Brian F.

Yelp
Delicious flavored coffee and heavy cream! This is my dream cafe! I'll be going out of my way to stop here every morning.
google avatar

Yelp
Very friendly staff . I've been going here for several years now . The owner is a super friendly gentleman. I love to go grab a coffee sit and watch people walking. Whenever I get a chance I will go again and again . They have so many different coffees to choose and buy . The only bad thing is that there are so many crazy people walking around and yell and scream or beg and it becomes scary sometimes. You just need peace while you are drinking or eating . This our city problem though not the business problem .

Yelp
Neighborhood coffee that's good quality and inexpensive - what more can you ask for?! I got a small cup for $2.50... Chocolate raspberry custom coffee. So yum! When you walk in, the aroma of coffee is all around you. There are beans to buy & also espresso-type drinks too. I'm going to come back here! It's in the middle of Philz and Peet's in Castro, but don't be tempted to go to the corporate coffee. Support local! My star rating: 5 - you have to go!!! 4 - you won't be disappointed 3 - it was okay 2 - I probably won't go back 1 - turnaround and run
google avatar

Bryce P.

Yelp
Average cappuccino Executed poorly - way too much foam Syrups/flavors are artificial - not made in house That said, their own bean collection was impressive Would rec another shop for a drink, though would rec here if you want to buy whole beans

Sofia C.

Yelp
Wonderful service!! I asked for a custom drink and my request was fulfilled and it turned out AMAZING. i highly recommend the chai frappe.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite coffee! We order 5-10 lbs at a time and have it shipped since we live 30 mi away. Love their espresso beans - even with shipping they're less expensive than the popular coffee house chains and SOOOOO much better. I get espresso perfection - and the beans are crazy oily and smell incredible before, during and after my espresso is made...

Sandy P.

Yelp
A huge variety of beans to make any true coffee lover happy. It's my favorite and only place I get my beans. Plus, the service is friendly and fun. My favorites (so far) are Espresso Perfection and European Royale. If you're a real coffee connoisseur, you must check this place out!
google avatar

Leslie C.

Yelp
Wow!! I ordered my usual pain in the ass drink- iced decaf mocha, no ice, extra mocha and the person taking my order did not even blink. They got the order perfect!!! The drink was delicious. Rich in chocolate, smooth coffee flavor and perfect temperature. I am very very impressed! Plus the staff is super nice and helpful. Highly recommend this coffee shop!!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Turkish coffee was great! Very friendly service. They had nice looking pastries and desserts.

Yelp
Castro Coffee Company is everything you could want from a local coffee shop. The staff is friendly, they remember you after only a couple of visits and they also have treats for your dog. They have a lot of options for coffee and some tasty pasteries to accompany.
google avatar

Yelp
Super small coffee shop with plenty of coffee options! I got the Vietnamese coffee and was surprised by the quality. Honestly you can't beat the price and size of the coffee. I think I paid around $4 which is really inexpensive compared to other coffee shops and Vietnamese coffee usually comes in a small portion but this was huge!!

Yelp
I've never gotten coffee here. Unbelievable, I know. After all, I've bought the chocolate-dipped appendage on a stick that I lustfully yet respectfully dubbed Mandingo at Hot Cookie, wolfed down the overaccessorized wieners at Dapper Dog, and attended the most essential sing-alongs at the Castro Theater. Besides, I'm a Philz guy who becomes a creature of redundant habits. But I had never been here until I found myself in the Castro early on a weekday morning with a few minutes to spare before a medical appointment up the street. What deterred me is the claustrophobic space and the number of tourists and regulars who venture in but don't seem to come out. On this particular morning, it was almost empty which allowed me to get a pleasing 20-ounce cup of the Hawaiian Royal Kona coffee for just $2.15 (photo: http://bit.ly/2PJ1Nsg). It gave me a gulp of the tropics before my EKG and motivated me to come back to buy a bag of their beans. They spotlighted at least five different types that morning which I presume they rotate. I was just thinking how good a cup of the Geisha Esmeralda would go with a Mandingo. COFFEE - 4 stars...smooth richness with a different flavor AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...still feels tight in here but I can bear it now SERVICE - 4 stars...awfully nice considering how long they must be in there every day TOTAL - 4 stars...indie coffee that worked for me RELATED - Hanging around in the Castro? Here's a list of the places I've tried and visited: http://bit.ly/2MD7Kcw

Yelp
The best coffee selection and cups of coffee! The workers are super sweet and knowledgeable of the flavors. The best part is that they have unroasted coffee beans. Definitely making Castro Coffee my go to place for all my coffee needs!
google avatar

Abraham A.

Yelp
Pretty decent spot for a cup of coffee. I love that two of the six coffees they offer on a daily basis or flavored. I believe I had banana cream, a flavor I never thought would taste good in coffee. Service is always great here, it's a tiny coffee shop that is local and puts out hugh amounts of coffee, what's not to like.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
My favorite drip coffee in the city. A good selection of great tasting coffee that is fresh, hot, and reasonably priced. They also have a huge selection of very reasonably priced beans. The service has always been great too. Love this place.
google avatar

Yelp
This is easily my favorite local coffee shop in San Francisco. No better place to get a variety of quality beans at an affordable price! As I've admittedly become more of a coffee aficionado (read: snob) over the last year, I've started caring more about the whole beans I buy. I appreciate having choices between different roasts, blends and single origin, all ideally roasted fresh. I found CCC through Yelp and swung by. It's a fairly small shop, but it's packed to the brim with different kinds of coffee. The variety of choice is almost dizzying. There are easily over three dozen types from all over the world. If you're not sure what to get, the staff is super helpful with recommendations, and you can ask to smell the beans as well. One thing I really appreciate is the flexibility in quantity you can purchase. I usually make coffee just for myself, so buying a traditional 16 oz or 12 oz bag can take me over a month to finish, by which time the beans aren't as fresh. The types I've tried so far are Costa Rica medium, Organic Sumatra Mandheling medium, Castro Breakfast blend, and Dark Sumatra. You can also of course, order brewed coffee, tea, and pastries.

Yelp
The barista working on 10/23 at 6pm was terrible and so weirdly rude it was unbelievable. He started giving us really hostile attitude before we even ordered, it was shocking and super odd. When we asked why he was being so hostile, he said "I'm always rude, everyone knows I'm rude." Very bizarre. To top it off, the beverage he made was awful. We actually ended up throwing them out.
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
Had heard from a friend that this place was good. Their door hours state they are open until 9pm on Mondays (see picture) and we were meeting friends so we went to Hot Cookie first. Came back over at 7:54 and they had already locked the door. One of the employees left and I asked him about their posted hours and he threw such attitude to barely deign to mumble "not tonight" without even looking back at me. This review isn't really against him but the fact that the hours posted on their actual front door say 9pm and they don't even stay open until 8pm is ridiculous. The fact that the employee was a dick about it after the fact was just icing on the cake. Bad experience.

Yelp
Castro Coffee Company is the ultimate in neighborhood businesses. The owner, Ken, has been there for decades and has been more than very supportive of the community. Just stand in the shop a moment, breathe in that rich coffee aroma, and watch & listen. You will see the endless stream of neighbors as they come in for coffee and such. They are warmly greeted by staff that know them, and important parts of their lives, and share a caring moment with them as coffee is prepared to order. It's heartwarming to be among friends when I'm there, and to catch up on some of the highlights of the neighborhood happenings. Ken has curated a menu of something for everybody... a palette of rich coffees, sweet treats, savory scones, and wholesome cookies. You can grab something on the go, or sit in the sunshine outside and people-watch. In these days of chain store invasion to neighborhoods around town, The Castro Coffee Company is one of the last true bastions of hometown merchants. literally a mom-and-pop shop. Now, with the addition of their al fresco seating, Castro Coffee has a place to make a pit stop, enjoy a cup, and catch up with a passing friend or two. I love to sit there, look around and reminisce about the neighborhood and all the history, culture, and community we have experienced there. Thank you Ken, Abeer, Dalia, Ray, and everybody at Castro Coffee Company, for creating and maintaining a community meeting place for so long!
google avatar

Barry J.

Yelp
I have tried 8 different blends from Castro Coffee. Ken knows his business. We recently left California , but I still have access to the best coffee in the city. I order my favorites and have them delivered .
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for coffee. I go for the flavored drip coffee. Pot #8 rules! Always a good flavor. They have heavy-cream so it's keto friendly! Very decent prices for a place in the Castro with seating. 16oz is just $1.95 :) The also recently replaced the tables outside, which are sturdy and don't reflect the light into your eyes anymore!
google avatar

Alexa W.

Yelp
I guess I should start with "I am not a coffee drinker" lol. And I didn't have coffee here, neither did I buy ground coffee. But I had tea and a bear claw. Both were great and the service was super nice. My friend had coffee and a scone and was ecstatic. That alone should be 5-star-worthy, because he is very hard to please :-) Nice bonus point: It's right next to the Castro Theater and they were nice enough to let us bring our hot beverages into the cinema (because we are adults and can be trusted with handling our coffee and tea around velvet chairs)!
google avatar

Orlando G.

Yelp
Best coffee in the whole area. The service is always friendly and they have many of the unique coffees in the works. Also great for Turkish coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
The Castro Coffee Company has become (and I don't use this word lightly) an institution in the Castro. Many of the neighborhood shops have come and gone, but few are as iconic in the Castro as this one. When I think of the history of the Castro, and so very much of what the neighborhood has experienced, The Castro Coffee Company has long been a touchstone of communal consistency. Ken and Abeer have been running the truest form of a village shop since their children, and probably your children, have been in strollers. Now, your kids are getting their coffee from Castro Coffee Company, and their kids can be found running the place, giving Ken and Abeer some well deserved time to themselves once in a while. All this does not happen but random chance. Their success is a sure sign of dedication, perseverance and high quality products. Ken has been a generous participant in the community and knows all his regular customers by name. The coffees are great, the line keeps moving, the greetings and salutations are earnest and, as sure as the sun rises and sets, The Castro Coffee Company is there for you, to start your day. Covid has sped up the line a little, all the appropriate precautions are in practice, but Ken has (since before Covid) installed a comfortable coffee-talk table set-up out front. If you can catch a table, take a few minutes to sit, soak up some sunshine and local color, and have a cup of the best coffee you're gonna find anywhere around.

Yelp
100% love this place, the owners, the workers and the area. I live in the East Bay and going here for my coffee is the perfect reason to visit San Francisco. Southern Pecan being my favorite coffee for some 20 years now. They cannot be beat for personalized service and excellent coffee. Enjoy!
google avatar

Gauri G.

Yelp
A great steal for a neighborhood staple in San Francisco! While the coffee was not the best I ever had, my iced coffee was well worth its price at $2.50 for an iced coffee in comparison to the whooping $5.00 I pay at other places. I definitely recommend this gem for those visiting the Castro and in need of a good cup of joe- a cheap price to pay for supporting a family-owned, local business!
