"Founded more than 40 years ago by sea urchin diver Dave Rudie, Catalina Offshore Products Inc. began as a sea urchin wholesaler that helped launch and sustain demand for local sea urchins—supplying sushi bars and restaurants—and has since evolved into one of the largest distributors of seafood from San Diego and Baja, now operating a wholesale division alongside an online store and a walk-in fish market. Rudie will continue to lend his expertise to marine research and seafood policy and still dive for sea urchins. The company was sold to Beish, whose stakeholders include longtime fishmongers Kathy and Dave Strangman of San Diego Seafood and cattle rancher Jose Chacon, and it will be managed by Chacon and the Strangmans’ children, Brittany and Tanner. Beyond maintaining Catalina’s legacy, the new operators plan to offer beef from Chacon’s ranch in Sonora in the online store and on-site market, remodel the fish market next spring or early summer, obtain an off-premise beer, wine, and liquor license and a tasting license for in-store events, and launch a food truck serving a rotating seasonal menu featuring their seafood and beef products." - Candice Woo

"During a 15-year tenure with Catalina Offshore Products, Gomes founded a walk-in fish market for the wholesaler and started an educational dinner series, reflecting his long career in the commercial-fishing industry and his emphasis on education and community connection." - Candice Woo

"Recommended for sushi-grade fish and specialty ingredients, with chefs singling out tuna and sea urchin for home raw preparations; also stocks niche pantry items like bourbon-barrel small-batch ponzu, cuttlefish ink, and roasted black sesame seeds. Shipping runs about $50–$55 flat in the continental U.S. (California shipping $15–$30), and orders over $200 in Southern California or over $300 elsewhere qualify for free shipping." - Nikita Richardson

"This local seafood wholesaler business may have slowed its restaurant sales but fresh catch is still available at the on-site fish market which is open daily and features. Walk-ins are welcome as well as pre-orders for curbside pickup." - darlene-horn

"As the San Diego seafood wholesaler where Gomes served as the public face for 15 years, Catalina Offshore Products expanded its offerings under his leadership: he spearheaded development of Catalina’s walk-in fish market, founded the nonprofit dinner series Collaboration Kitchen, and played a vital role in securing a grant with NOAA Fisheries to help expand demand for opah and other underutilized species; although Gomes is stepping back from day-to-day operations, he will remain an ambassador and chef liaison for the company." - Candice Woo
