Was in downtown Austin for the SXSW festival and needed to grab something quick between movie screenings. I was intrigued by CAVA because it looked like it offered tons of healthy options. There are good and bad things about my first-ever visit, and as a whole, I will absolutely return again.
THE GOOD:
* The ability to customize your bowl. They have salads, all types of rice, grains, beans, and more. I opted for a bowl with half brown rice and half lentils (both were excellent), and added lots of veggies to the top.
*This is a terrific choice for vegetarians, as there are dozens of meat-free options!
*The portion sizes are very large, I ended up taking half of my bowl back to the hotel to enjoy the next day.
*Free refills on the sodas / iced tea from a self-service drink fountain.
*Fair prices, especially considering the high quality, healthy ingredients and portion sizes.
THE BAD:
*Staff: Cava would be a solid 5 star rating except for how rushed the staff is -- this is a create-your-own bowl place, but they are in such a hurry that they don't listen and then get your order wrong. I had to get my bowl redone TWICE because of the lack of attention from the staff. They had to throw out and waste all that food because of their refusal to slow down and listen, which resulted in my bowl being made wrong -- twice.
*Cleanliness: the dining room was disgusting. Really, really filthy. The tables were sticky, trash on the floor, just nasty. Makes me wonder how bad the kitchen could be.
*Pita: they offer a side of pita included with your entree, but mine was hard and seemed reheated or microwaved. Pita should be fluffy, and mine was not. It tasted good and would've been awesome had it been fresh and soft.
Overall I was quite impressed with CAVA. This quick service chain delivers a solid and tasty meal. I will absolutely return, but I may try to go when they aren't so busy. I think the amount of ingredients and the stressed out staff just causes a ton of service problems and creates massively long lines.
