Where To Eat Near USC

"Despite sounding like a trendy new Paleo restaurant, Caveman Kitchen is a casual Peruvian/American/whatever-it-wants-to-be spot that makes some excellent, huge plates of meat. The space is usually filled with students eating rotisserie chicken (which is always roasting in the back, so the place smells great), burgers, and lomo saltado. Come here once for a hungover breakfast or a quick dinner and you’ll probably become a regular." - amy clark, katherine lewin

From the outside looking in, you wouldn’t know what to expect. I was surprised to find a whole vibe inside! You walk up, order, and they bring the food to your table. We ordered the Lomo Saltado and it was bomb! I devoured that in 15 min! 🫣 we also ordered two drinks and the music was at the perfect level. Parking can be a little difficult but worth it!! 🔥

The space looks like an authentic Peruvian joint. Interesting and very tropical types interior and decor. I got saltado chicken and fish tacos. The chicken was good. The fish tacos were okay. Maybe my palete didn't like it. Horchata was surprisingly very good.

Friendly service. Ordered the signature combo. Soggy sandwich, soggy fries. Big piece of bacon, small amount of chicken. The spicy avocado bottle on tabletop was good. Made the soggy bread and fries taste ok. Huge projector TV great for watching sports. Dimly lit and Comfortable. But for $14 there is many better options. Things they can improve on are toasting bottom bun. Cooking fries longer, adding 1oz more chicken to sandwich.

If you want to be dancing in your seat while you're waiting for (and eating) your food, come to this place. It's Peruvian-American in my opinion. The food was awesome! I had the Cave Club Sandwich Combo. I'll come back soon to have the Lomo Saltado.

Google
Great place for Lomo. We also had the Pina burger. Wasn't blown away by either but they were good. We will return when in the area.

Cashier threw receipt to trashcan before offering to give the receipt to me. I asked her where was my receipt and she said “in the trash can. Oh you wanted your receipt?” I said yes and she took it out of the trashcan and handed it over to me. I was surprised of such behavior. Her attitude was a bad start and I began to feel unwelcome. My mom found a table and called me over. I explained to her what had happened and she said let’s wait for the food I’m hungry. I wasn’t too sure to stay however, we decided to wait for the food. Once’s the food had arrived the presentation seemed so appetizing and all I wanted was to get closer to my food plate. I took a good sniff over my plate and it was not what I expected. The food was marinated in a loud flavor that was covering up what we call in Spanish “chuquillo” a smell that the meat releases when is starting to go bad. I was nauseated immediately. It was so obvious of the nasty smell mixing up with so much flavor. I told my mom to smell the food before trying it because my was not good. She checked her food as well and she got so upset. She immediately called over somebody to alarm them. And they spoke with chefs and perhaps it was a bad batch we received. We were no longer comfortable there. We were afraid to get sick. They gave us a refund and then we left.

Google
This little hidden cave is absolutely amazing! The food is full of flavor, and you can really taste the chicken difference with their big fire oven. I brought my coworkers along, and they all fell in love with the place. I ordered the shrimp saltado , and it was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. The restaurant has a great vibe, and their drink selection is yummy. Highly recommend!

Google
I rarely write any reviews, I felt that I should bring this up. I went yesterday placed my orders. Didn't tip this time. I got an alert that a tip was added in yesterday transaction. I just wonder kf they have done this to other paying customers. They are stealing and that it's right. The amount was small($3.00). But imagine they do that to every customer it adds up. I will speak a manager to keep them informed. Can't say if it was the cashier that rang me up, or the person that closes.

Yelp
First time to Caveman Kitchen. Will not be my last. Second, it's close to work. First, because I enjoyed it. A lot. I didn't enjoy the parking. I showed up after work and ended up parking down the block. I thought I might have to do a few laps around the neighborhood but lucked out and caught someone taking off from a spot my car fits. If you know me, I don't have Zoey anymore. My new ride, Caleb doesn't fit everywhere. There are spots in the plaza where the restaurant is, but when I pulled in, nothing was available. Walk in, order and find a seat. I got there early so I had to order a few times as I didn't know when my party would arrive. Not a big deal but just know it's not like you get a bill for the table and just add to it. Get up and order, get your number and everything will be brought out to you. Though not quite full service, the staff is friendly AF. If you need anything, just ask. Also really helpful and I appreciate that when I did order, one of the counter staff told me to order the dessert and let her know when I was ready to avoid having to place another order. I really enjoyed the food. The Mariscos Saltado hit the spot. Along with the Plantains for appetizers and for dessert. See pics. I even had their "Caveman" beer. Sorta like Pacifico but a full bodied and went well to kick off the three days weekend (went last Friday). Dining are can get a little loud with the music then adding the people. So, don't go hoping to have intimate conversations. Go there to eat. Eat well. Like I did.

Yelp
Highly recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. Their famous lomo saltado was flavoring but if I am being honest the protein to potato fries ratio was off. Add some protein and ease up on the tomato, onion and fries please!!! I also try their burger which was juicy and delicious. Service was good, music was good, food was good. Only thing that sucks is their parking lot!!! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
I would really give this 3.5 stars. I ordered the popular Lomo Saltado and it was just okay. I felt like the meat needed more flavor. It came with rice but no beans. The sauce was really good, just needed the meat to taste like the sauce and it would have been much better. Also I felt there was way more fries in it than actual meat. But not bad. I just wouldn't get it again. Shopping center parking.

Yelp
I was looking for a delicious and very inexpensive Peruvian food close to my home. I did search up in yelp and found this amazing place not too far from home and decided we give it a try and oh my God I am so glad we did. My husband and I love the food and the boys were definitely very pleased. We will definitely be back for some more.

Yelp
Been coming to caveman kitchen on and off for years. The food never misses, whether it's one of the sandwiches or saltado dishes. The service is nothing special, just a walk up and order kiosk, but the staff does a good job of checking in periodically on everything. They're always playing some sort of sporting event on the TVs. Parking can be a little hectic at times due to other restaurants in the plaza, but thankfully they have an attendant that relieves some of the pressure.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was delicious. Their horchata was authentic. We had the lomo saltado, Pollo al mojo, and bistec criollo. Service was quick and well worth the price.
google avatar

Stacee S.

Yelp
Recently got caveman again after a long time and the lomo saltado did not disappoint!! This was always my go to place when I lived by USC. The lomo is excellent, the rotisserie chicken, the jalapeño burger, it's all good! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy Peruvian food. I've been here several times and only ever get the Lomo Saltado, but I have yet to be disappointed. You order up front, and then they provide you a table where the food then comes out quite quickly. They have this creamy salsa verde that adds a nice kick to the food as well. I can't complain!
google avatar

April W.

Yelp
Delicious chicken, love the green sauce, and wonderful rice and beans. It is all very flavorful and moist!!
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant! Delicious food and the best people own the restaurant. Try the Pollo Al Mojo (garlic chicken) it's theeee Best! You won't find that anywhere else. TRUST!

Yelp
Veggie Saltado.... Perfection. After cutting all meat and finish what I realized was Vegetarian meals require a level of creativity that meat diets don't. The Saltado dish should be served at every vegetarian restaurant.

Yelp
Food: The one menu that I get here is Lomo Saltado with Horchata. Lomo Saltado (4.5/5): My friend introduced me to this place saying that this is the dish you have to try if it's your first time. I got it and it was a taste that I've never had before. I can't have cilantro so I got mine without it, but the taste of all the ingredients in this dish were amazing and flavorful. It's a dish that comes back to your mind once in a while. Horchata (4/5): Usually all the horchatas in LA are just too sweet, but this restaurant's horchata - still slightly still on the sweeter side - balances well with the savoriness of the main dish. Service: Order at Kiosk and then server comes to your table with your food - food comes out relatively quickly. Good service! Ambience: Casual eats. Usually have seats to eat.

Yelp
I placed an order about 2 weeks ago and requested dark meat only over the phone, and yeah it gone done. I placed an order today without any special instructions, and they did all dark meat again with a shit load salad and rice , and I was just shocked. The food here is a 9/10, it's just the attention to detail that pushes it over a 10. I love this restaurant and the employees here.
google avatar

Dezmond B.

Yelp
Caveman's Kitchen has definitely proven itself as a top tier Peruvian restaurant in LA. Each time I I visit the food has been top notch consistently. The service is always fast and efficient. They make this in house verde sauce that adds a delicious spice to any meal. The ambiance in the restaurant is very vibrant there are a lot of colors and writing on the walls. Go enjoy this delicacy when you get a chance.

Yelp
Love the green sauce here and micheladas I love tallarin with steak great prices they even have valet parking
google avatar

Marcela O.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best spots for a Lomo Saltado! The food here tastes amazing! Full of flavor. Loud music and they show the games at this restaurant. The food is done fairly quickly at a reasonable time. The only downside is the small parking lot situation, prepare to fight for parking here, or just park on the street.
google avatar

Juel A.

Yelp
Bomb! Bomb ! Bomb ! Definitely recommend this place. They have a good menu of f different plates and even burgers. The micheladas were so good, and we had the lomo mixto with steak and shrimp.

Berti P.

Yelp
Went in with my cousin had a beer and two michis apparently that's all you can drink. We also ate a fish taco and a burger. It's good but if you want to hang out and watch a game with some beers. This is not the place to go. The girl at the front told me I was cut off
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
I swear on my life, their red sauce is the BEST spicy sauce in all of LA. I don't know what it is!! It's super spicy, and just SO delicious. I used to come here with coworkers and I would drown my food in the red sauce. It's a little too spicy for me so I just eat my food with tears in my eyes and then say "it's sooooo good!!!!" lol. I get the same thing every time. Chicken, white rice, and beans. I'm not even a plain white rice and back beans fan, but with the sauce, it's the best rice/beans. The chicken is just fine. It's not life changing, but drown it with sauce. Yes 98% of my review is about the red sauce. It's life changing!
google avatar

Shasta C.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the green salsa is fire. Love coming here because of their friendly staff and delicious food. My favorite dish is the lomo saltado.
google avatar

Jasmine A.

Yelp
I know people come here for the chicken, but Idk the rice is just so good. And the beans also!
google avatar

Rick Vincent C.

Yelp
I had the Lomo Soltado Mixed with beef and shrimp. The meal overall was pretty carb heavy as it came with rice and fries. This meal with a Diet Coke and tip came out to be like $30. Some would say it's not worth it but the flavor combination and not having to cook a delicious meal yourself makes it, hahaha. The food came out pretty quick and luckily we made it in time before the rush. My friend and I arrived around 1pm and the private lot for parking was already full but there's plenty of street parking if you walk a little bit. The meal was a bit saucy so if I could do it again I would ask if they could make the fries a little more on the crispy side so it doesn't become super soggy when soaking up the juice.
google avatar

Gabe C.

Yelp
This is a place I want to show everyone but also want to keep a secret! The Lomo is so flavor and authentic! It has a hole in the wall feel with a sense of community. Always greeted with a smile and comforting service. Also don't sleep on the hamburgers!
google avatar

Bree G.

Yelp
It seems that anytime I place my order online right past 8pm my order is cancelled ,and I am told that they are out of chicken every time. It's happened about 3/4 times now. Today when I expressed frustration I was told that they do not want to make anymore chicken since they close at 9pm.. I would understand this if it were closer to 9pm. I placed my order at 8:07pm and received a confrontation email with a pick up time for 8:27pm. Followed by a phone call letting me know they were cancelling my order. Which is too bad because I really enjoy the food here. Food is delicious. The Parking lot is small and I believe they charge during certain hours.

Yelp
I'm not going to lie to you .!!! This is one of our families favorite restaurant.!! People are great . Food is awesome and always hot . And there is a great vibe. But Sadly today was not really great .! Food had extra extra oil . We order a Lomo Saltado and a mix Tallarín and it was great in taste as always but super oily..! Please be advice that you guys are always on top of your game but this time you guys mess it up ..!!!
google avatar

Heavyn K.

Yelp
The food was amazing, I ordered fish tacos & it was a filling plate w/ beans. Super tasty, the horchata was good & they kept my water filled up. Awesome because I am a thirsty human who drinks more water than I eat & they didn't disappoint w/ catering to us.
google avatar

N W.

Yelp
My review was only a star away from a 5 star review. The place has great food, a nice ambiance, and I can see that the service crew is trying their best to service the clients. However, the management team is chilling on the setting/dinning floor, socializing and drinking with friends while people are waiting for their food and staff is running around....Not cool! A successful business has to be led by example.
google avatar

King K.

Yelp
The Lomo Saltado is absolutely amazing here I would highly recommend getting the green sauce which makes everything better
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Such a great spot to grab Peruvian food! Food is made to order and comes out super fast! Loved it and would definitely be back! The parking lot here is CRAZY though! Super hard to get parking so be ready to park on the street.
google avatar

Edwin C.

Yelp
Lomo saltado and the garlic roasted chicken are my go to selections! There are many options and I can't wait to go back and try something new.
google avatar

Lucy T.

Yelp
I really enjoy their roasted chicken! I feel like the chicken has amazing quality and is delicious! It's a cute little place where his family owned so the food taste like it's homemade! I recommend you try this place!
google avatar

Sian S.

Yelp
fast & nice service, but at this price point i was a little disappointed by taste and flavor. compared to other peruvian places i've had they were a bit average. still a good spot to take someone who's never had peruvian food though, and in a pretty good location for usc students. good place to sit and have a beer or something.
google avatar

Jorge A.

Yelp
I have been here quite a few times but have only tried three different dishes. I have had Lomo Saltado, Pollo Rostizado, and Pollo Criollo. Every one of these dishes has been absolutely delicious. I want to try everything on their menu. The service is always on point. All of the employees are very attentive and friendly. The place is always clean and inviting. Their prices are very reasonable compared to other restaurants with similar menus. If you haven't tried them then you don't know what you're missing.
google avatar

Kolani W.

Yelp
Garlic chicken is such a hit each time - portions spot on, plantains delish - my only wish is for better packaging to retain all of the juices from chicken
google avatar

Tania G.

Yelp
Prices have increase.. it doesn't seem right when the cost goes up but the quality of service goes down. I've noticed when tables aren't clean right after people are done eating.. and I don't mean, JUST picking up the dishes, at least wipe down the table. Use to be my favorite local spot but oh well.
google avatar

Aleyda Q.

Yelp
I placed an order for 25 people there was so much rice, but not enough beans!! I was embarrassed that some guests didn't get beans.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
The best Lomo Saltado I have ever had! Love this place. They have some great hamburgers as well.
google avatar

Esther C.

Yelp
Food is SOOO yummy but portion isn't as big as you'd expect it to be. Very chill vibe and big seating area. I would recommend this place if you're in the area! Their michelada is also 10/10.
google avatar

Contessa B.

Yelp
I'm soooo glad that our first choice for lunch had a wait time of 30-40minutes!!! This spot was our second choice....it should have been our first LOL!! This was both our first time dining here. Ordering was quick and easy and our food came out within minutes. As soon as we opened the door to enter....the smells from the kitchen let us know that we were about to have a party in our mouths!! And we did!! I can't wait to go back. Also their Micheladas are so good
google avatar

Jamie K.

Yelp
This place was my jam when I worked on USC main campus. Now I work in El Segundo. I was really looking forward to eating here today. Website shows hours (see picture) as 1030am to 9PM on Mondays. Yelp says only to 330pm on Mondays. Showed up at 310pm and its closed. Their digital info get 5 .
google avatar

Carlos M.

Yelp
One of the top 10 roasted chickens in Southern California Customer Service was great. Food was delicious when I go back yes 100% satisfied telephone best Chicken ever.
google avatar

Danny W.

Yelp
Of the past few years of residing in the University of Southern California region, Caveman has often been one of the places that kids like for the quick Peruvian food. Anyone can cook, and you can most likely make this at home. With that said, this place has significantly dropped off in the past few years, remaining the same old design with mediocre food. I would caution everyone who wants to come here to look at Yelp or or other review sources to see where they can get better food or even a better dining experience else where, because the list can go on and on. Food 3/5 Ambiance 0/5 Service 1/5 Value 1/5 Overall 0/5
google avatar

Victor L.

Yelp
Good! Would come again. Portion was just right, price was right. Environment was dark but right! Not much bad to say
google avatar

Sheyla M.

Yelp
Caveman NEVER disappoints! Always great, savory, delicious, fresh food. I've tried a few of the items but my favorite of all time is the pollo Al mojo. Especially with that green salsa chile. So bomb, spicy but bomb. The staff is always friendly and service is fast. They have an indoor tables and small 2 seater tables outside. The only bad thing is the parking. That parking lot is always full since there is multiple eating places there. If you haven't tried caveman, then you are missing out.
google avatar

Abby G.

Yelp
I love the lomo saltado and the rotisserie chicken that they have! I always order to go and it's always ready within 15-20 minutes of ordering. This place gets packed (lines can be long to order) when doing a walk in so I do recommend ordering ahead of time. There is limited parking in the parking lot since it is small and shares with other businesses.
google avatar

Carol H.

Yelp
I had never been to this restaurant. One of my coworkers was ordering food for pick up. I looked at the menu online and ordered the garlic chicken. Many restaurants and different cultures all do a chicken, rice and beans dishes (arroz con pollo), but this one was different and excellent. It was different from the popular Cuban restaurants, It was also different from the many Mexican or even Jamaican restaurants (chicken, rice, and bean dishes). The 1/4 serving of chicken was well seasoned and juicy (not dry at all). The rice and beans were also delicious. The beans were nice and tender. The dish came with some delicious plantains that were also tender. The portion was large and I was not able to eat the whole meal. I gave half to one of my coworkers who also loved it. I definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be going back again soon.
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Very good food. Coming from USC it is easy to get to and the service and A/C were a blast. There are 4 TVs for those who induldge and need the distraction from this fine place but I don't see why.
google avatar

Mario D.

Yelp
I'm all about Peruvian joints, but this spot totally schools the big ones down in the South Bay, Cerritos, and Long Beach. Not gonna drop names, though! Their Lomo Saltado? A solid 5/5. Pollo Saltado? Another 5/5. And that rotisserie chicken? You guessed it - 5/5. Only bummer is the location and parking situation. Prices? Way better than what other places are pulling off.

Maurine A.

Yelp
Food, prices and service are excellent! Staff is friendly and accommodating. I recommend Caveman Kitchen highly!
