Very cool New England hamburger and ice cream stand. Loved the walk up ordering, the patio seating area, and the retro vibes. Food was pretty good too. Fries were great! Other food was above average. Soft serve was very good, creamy and smooth. Wish I had a place like this near me, but thankful I don’t. I’d be there all the time gaining weight.

Google
I was disappointed by the very small serving size. I was a little surprised that a Cash only ice cream stand charged $7 for a Small Soft Serve Cone. (Without any toppings)..BUT then when they handed me this tiny little cone I was SHOCKED I had just paid $7 for it. As a frequent flyer to little roadside ice cream stands all over New England i can say this is the worst bang for my buck I've had in a long time!! (For a great deal & even better ice cream, Maple soft serve even...try out my favorite find yet. The Eldridge Family Sugar House & Ice Cream Shoppe in Tamworth NH)

My family and I have been coming here longer than I can remember. I will always love coming for the nostalgic value, great food options, and ice cream. Over the years though, the prices have felt increasingly unjustifiable. I’d feel better about the price if they didn’t have raging wasps in the outdoor seating area year after year. Everytime I come to visit we have to leave and sit in the car because the wasps are so dangerous to be around. I’d hope next season they do something about this because it would definitely encourage folks to stay around and enjoy themselves otherwise.

We stopped by hoping to get some ice cream and notified that they only had maybe 5 or 6 flavors. I had creamsicle, mix of vanilla and orange flavors and it was pretty good. This place mostly focus on food. Lots of food choices. For the time, we were making our minds, which took a bit of time, lot's of people ordered food. It means place is popular.

Google
We LOVE Dairy Joy! Yes, we always get the Javaberry cone, usually large. I love the clam strip plate and shrimp plate, my son had a great burger and fries we all so got the onion rings. We are going again this week and we come from Central Ma. do you know we MUST love it! Yes, it’s pricey but worth it and it’s a pretty ride!

Google
Couple criticisms: this was my first time coming to Dairy Joy, as much as the place looked cute, lines and cues were incredibly confusing. People were clumping rather than a straight line, there were no organization tactics but no biggy, the place was local and is a popular destination for snacks, food, and sweets. You’d think the creamery would have a ton of ice cream flavors because the name of the place is “Dairy Joy”, but unfortunately, there was very minimal flavors which only contained Vanilla, Strawberry, chocolate, orange creamsicle, and marble. Unlike other ice cream and snack shack places, there were no topping options for the ice cream. Again, not a big deal. Just something I noticed. There were more food options rather than desserts. There are good plant based and gluten free options for those with allergens which I think is a really good plus for new comers to enjoy. Staff were medium-friendly. Not all friendly, medium-friendly. They all seemed unhappy whenever they would work in the establishment. They never let you know when to pay a head of time, leaving several customers confused. However, I was pretty disappointed when I first received my order. The soft serve was more silky rather than a sweet, soft and pillowy melty texture. The frappe I also ordered was supposed to be “extra creamy”, but it was not what I was expecting. The new flavor they also added for limited time, which was cookies and cream was good, but the texture kinda ruined the fun. It was more of a liquidy and a soupy cold mess. Overall, cute location in a peaceful town :)) , but I wouldn’t come back for more of their ice cream. Expanding the selection of flavors, improving the texture, organize the chaotic lines and making the environment more friendlier towards customers and other staff are my only critiques.

Google
Probably best for ice cream. Food (burger and dog) were nothing special for the cost. Woman yelling for money back on food while we were there. Young lady taking order rolled her eyes when we ordered food. Order was incorrect. Condiment station needed refilling. We came here for a nostalgic visit and left disappointed.

Google
$CASH ONLY$ and there is ONLY ONE reason a business does this. I wonder if they ever get audited by the IRS. Anyway, mediocre and very overpriced food and soft serve ice cream which is delivered by a truck in large bags made in a factory. We got a burger and were asked if we wanted lettuce and tomato. 'Sure' we replied. It was $2 extra. Came with nine French fries. I used to live near this place years ago and would take the kids many times a year. On one visit my nine French fries were stone-cold and I asked for a replacement. I had eaten half of them however and the owner asked where they were?! He suspected I was a serial fry scammer, driving up and down route 117 ordering fries and then claiming they were cold. I boycotted them after that.

Yelp
Have been going for 2 decades, burgers are good and so is the soft serve, clams are the best in metro west but the service is spotty at best because it's all local kids at the windows, some of whom have customer service skills and work ethic, but others don't. However this place is fairly expensive on the order of $20 to $25 for a family of 4 for ice cream and $40 to $100 or more for dinner. It's in Weston the most expensive town for income in the state and located on 117 serving all of the exclusive metro west towns so prices reflect the zip code

Yelp
Nice vintage vibe ice cream and classic American food spot in Weston. My family and I go every spring/summer. I had Lobster Roll (pretty good - solid) Dairy free chocolate cake ice cream (good, but should order after I ate, as melted bit)
google avatar

Traci T.

Yelp
I get their chicken tenders all the time. I was just starving and craving them on my way home. They've always been expensive - but worth the money as a treat, in my opinion. On the way home I are an ice cream which was great, but the cone was stale. Not normal for them, so I thought just a one time thing. I got home so excited, to take a bite into a chicken finger to discover they are completely different. (I have gotten their chicken fingers MULTIPLE times this season. I'm POSITIVE these are different.) I called and the girl told me they are the same. I literally would bet anything on this, as I am POSITIVE they are different. This is someone that just drove 25 mins extra on a long drive home to get them, because she knows how good they are (or used to be....) The chicken is normally amazing white meat. This was gross and creepy chicken- mushed together. More like a nugget than a tender. I literally cannot eat these and am throwing them out and about to cook. I have asked for a refund and am waiting. But honestly- I am so frustrated that they probably just lost me as a customer.

Yelp
Truthfully, Dairy Joy does not have the best fried clams or ice cream, but the roadside stand offers a quintessential taste of summer in New England. If you are looking for something nostalgic, I would recommend stopping by. I believe Dairy Joy is at least 60 years old by this point. The lines get pretty long in warmer weather but it's a nice place to bring the kids.

Yelp
We stopped by after leaving Walden Pond and just got some ice cream. But this place seems like a little gem. The soft serve ice cream was very good, and the food that others had looked delicious. The fact that they only took cash was a bit of a hassle, but otherwise I'd love to go back and get a "real meal" at this place. It's seems to be the last of a dying breed of old time ice cream stands.
google avatar

Yelp
A quick ice cream stop, yes please! We stopped by dairy joy as part of my search to find the best soft serve. They have it listed as having dairy free options, but when we came there weren't any available. We came around late lunch time, so there was a line and I was excited to try the creamsicle soft serve. While we were waiting there was a lady who came back and said the creamsicle flavor was off, so I ended up just getting a plain medium twist cone. They are a cash only spot, but they do also have an ATM if you need. This medium cone was no joke huge and very filling. It was soft and creamy and could in itself be a meal. They also have fried seafood and plenty of tables if you're looking to sit down and have a meal outside. Overall, a pretty good spot to get soft serve, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place and always want to stop since it looks so cute! Today was the day. They're cash only and only soft serve ice cream. We thought the ice cream was okay, not great. The prices were pretty steep for soft serve. We asked for a root beer float and were served a regular soda float. Gave it a try and wasn't our thing. The chocolate dip cone was fine. It wasn't bad but I'd pick Dairy Queen over it in a heartbeat if given the choice. Fun to try on the first nice day of spring but not much to rave about.

Yelp
If you are looking for a simple classic that is the soft serve Diary Joy can satisfy. Diary Joy's soft serve is soft yet not the creamiest of soft serves. Some of the ice cream tasted icy like it had some sheets of ice within it. I do appreciate Dairy Joy's simple menu with not too many flavors and weekly specials. Dairy Joy keeps it simple and doesn't overwhelm you with flavors which can be nice. Sometimes you just need a spot to go to that always has their classic flavors and keeps ordering easy and uncomplicated. Diary Joy is cash only and has no public restrooms. Not a fully satisfying rest stop if you need all amenities.
google avatar

Steph P.

Yelp
Their machine for their dairy free flavor is almost always broken or they've run out. In addition, they close at random times and don't communicate the times they close.
google avatar

Annie G.

Yelp
I've been going to Dairy Joy for 30 years and it's only gotten better. It's a real New England experience, especially if you like seafood (lobster rolls, fried clams, etc), and they have some of the best soft serve ice cream around, including some swirl flavors you won't find elsewhere, like Javaberry. My family and I love bringing friends and family from out of town because it's outdoors, it's old school, it's casual, and the food is really excellent. Great service, plus more items, specials, and flavors each year. Get there before they close for the season!
google avatar

Charlie K.

Yelp
Waited in line, asked about gluten free options as my daughter has celiac disease, and the two young people at the counter just quickly said nothing is gluten free - absolutely nothing on their menu. We've NEVER been to an ice cream/soft serve place that doesn't have a single flavor or item without gluten - we're not picky about serving spoons/cross contamination, as our daughter has been fine. It was clearly that they didn't want to check ingredients or be bothered to look into it. Can't recommend if you want any form of service, especially for a seven year old who'd been waiting in line.
google avatar

Yelp
Go there almost every week, mostly for take home soft serve. This year we have seen the quality of the help, not the product, deteriorate. Got home just now to. Find that we got " almost a quart" for the price of a quart. Who is training and/or supervising....and while I am at it; $10.10 for a quart? This is a cash only business , ok, I get that, but nobody carries change anymore . Get modern, please.
google avatar

M R.

Yelp
We only go for soft serve. We won't go to any other stand for soft serve. Javaberry (dip with chocolate sprinkles) or creamsicle. Incomparable.
google avatar

Anrana S.

Yelp
Common theme here. Expensive. And just not worth the price. I also ended up with a really bad stomach ache after eating the fried clam strips. Maybe it was sticker shock? Or excess grease?

Drew M.

Yelp
Don't expect them to be open when they say they will be. Called them to confirm their hours and later that day drove an hour to find that they closed early. Very disappointing. I've been coming here for years and while the prices are high, the ice cream and food are great.

Yelp
We tried Dairy Joy for a weekend lunch and found the food to be decent but overpriced...there are definitely better options at this price point. Our party shared a couple of the seafood platters, and I really liked the shrimp but wasn't a big fan of the rest of it. My husband, who generally likes fried seafood more than I do, thought it was all decent. The sweet potato fries were wonderful - I'd definitely recommend them! They were probably the only thing I'd actually go back for. The ice cream is soft serve and also decent, but there are only a few choices for flavors (although they do have dairy free options, which is a plus). Seating is picnic tables outside, just watch out for the wasps that are attracted to all of the food and drinks!
google avatar

Rita V.

Yelp
If you take the Dairy out of the joint and leave the Joy, the dairy-avoiding people (vegan, lactose, etc.) can rejoice having their Salted Caramel confection. ALL the summer without the lactose! (OK, my husband wanted to try it and scarfed it down with Chef Mike smiling like the Cheshire cat because he KNOWS he is on to something!) and I indulged in a choco-nilla twist. Do not be frightened by the price tag. Yes, clams, lobster and food in general has gone sky-high like the house in "UP" - but you still get your money's worth on the best dang fried clams and fried shrimp with no ocean in sight. I mean, if you really feel you are missing out on the shack, bring your water gun and have your grandma chase you down. They fry clean and they fry right. And fry away they can because I trekk from Hudson just to get my summer fix. YES, pricey. EVERYTHING in the Covid era is pricey. So don't have the clams. Enjoy a burger. Or those ONION RINGS! Vegetarian? Yea, they got stuff for you too and its just not only salads. I guess someone here may think I'm one of the "rich folk"... I reserve my outings for quality and do my homework before I embark on my glutonous mission. Bring cash. They will laugh their card over to the ATM located right in front of the building. And bring your kids, grandma, parents. For the love of summer shacks. And hard working people who put out really good food!

Yelp
This place used to be good but it is clear a case of owner greed and corner cutting. For the cost if a simple cheeseburger you would expect better meat than a previously frozen preformed garbage sirloin patty purchased from the Costco a 3.5 miles down the street. Be the local favorite again, use fresh better quality ingredients. The customer base has dried up so they've increased their prices and lowered quality. It's time they tried raising the food quality, get a little lower margin and bring back the long lines because customers would actually want to eat there again.

Lisa D.

Yelp
I went one night after work and paid $24.00 for 10 little scallops. It was supposed to be a scallop plate. Nothing else came with it. I had to buy a drink separately and an order of French fries separately also, which cost more money! Such a big rip off! Never again will I go there! I also say at a picnic table and they shut the lights off on me so I finished my meal in the dark. Real nice. Worst experience of my life! Never again. Never even got to get an ice cream. No great loss. Seafood Plate , where did you go to?
google avatar

Rhea B.

Yelp
Really great burger, onion rings, and fries. And very friendly service. It's late in the season, and sometimes seasonal stands kind of wind down and fall apart, but everything was great tonight!

Rebecca K.

Yelp
overpriced for the amount of food you get. got a medium ice cream in a waffle cone and the server didn't even fill it over the cone, i asked about it and she said it was the normal amount...
google avatar

Yelp
Besides the owner being a total DBag food is so mediocre it's crazy and ice cream is fitting of the owner. Terrible place
google avatar

Sheila Z.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid!! Never been let down! Lines can be kinda long but it's worth the wait for sure!! Ice cream and burgers and fried fish platters are to die for!! My parents took me there and now I take my kids there and they love it on a warm summer night!!
google avatar

Henry D.

Yelp
I went today to get a frappe with a friend. It said on the board that it would be around 7 dollars, 8 dollars with malt for each. We got 2. They charged 21 dollars. Didn't even come with malt. If I could give a 0 star review I would. Terrible establishment. Would never recommend.
google avatar

Kellie W.

Yelp
It's not often that I write a negative review but 1.75$ for lettuce and tomatoes on my veggie burger.......really Dairy Joy? It's not guac. My son and I went there tonight for food, and the prices are way too high for a drive up ice cream joint. The veggie burger was ok...not much flavor and it fell apart. My son got the smoke burger which definitely isn't smoked and if you get it with their bland fries its 15$. They also don't ask if you want fries so you automatically get charged for them. Its 13$ without. 15$ for a large sweet potato fry...yup. I changed my order to a small because of it. The quality and price don't match up. The girl helping us was incredibly rude. I asked for a pixie sundae, she came back with soft serve in a cup with nothing else on it. Then dumped the toppings on it so messily they were all over the sides of the cup. The ice cream is mediocre. Go to Pizi Farm it's way better. I'm attaching a pic of our ridiculous receipt.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
Great seafood and ice cream. Loved the ice cream cones (creamsicle, vanilla and dipped chocolate). The lobster roll was delicious (pricy but sometimes you pay for the experience) and the clams were quite tasty. My brother got the fried shrimp and fries which were also quite good. Only disappointment was the onion rings, which were only lightly breaded and really were quite flavorless (requiring a rare application of ketchup).
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
I was about to give them 4 stars but just saw that they charge you extra ($1.75!!) for lettuce and tomato on your sandwich, and for cheese ($0.80). I understand paying extra for cheese, but man, $1.75 for lettuce and tomato is STEEP. In any case, my coworker and I came here to try their famous soft serve and also to pick up lunch. Since we came right when they opened, there wasn't much of a line, but people started arriving when we were leaving. We tried: -Pixie Sundae (Coffee Soft Serve w/Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream, $3.95): YUM- their soft serve is really delicious. It's very thick and creamy, and their hot fudge was also the perfect consistency- highly recommended! -Chicken Finger Specialty Sandwich Combo (w/Fries & Soda, $13.90 + Lettuce/Tomato $1.75 + Cheese $0.80): Now I know why everyone is complaining about the exorbitant prices here, since it cost a total of $16.45 for a fried chicken cutlet sandwich, a small tray of fries, and a small soda- crazy!! The chicken cutlet was at least pretty big, and was wider than the bun, but it needed seasoning. At least it had a good crisp on the outside. I wouldn't get this again. I also tried a sample of the Javaberry soft serve, but I'm not a big fan of raspberry so this wasn't my favorite. I would definitely come back for their soft serve, but avoid ordering any other food here! They have some tables to sit at if you want to dine there. Parking was easy since they basically have a giant patch of grass/dirt in front.
google avatar

Doug F.

Yelp
Mediocre food for a high price. For $16 I would expect my burger to actually taste like something. Great for the rich folk.

D F.

Yelp
This place used to be good but has gone downhill. In addition to the mediocre, overpriced food and the unprofessional, unfriendly staff, the bees are a big issue and you cannot even sit and enjoy your food without them swarming your plates and your face. The workers were complaining to each other about having to work and seemed to be making fun of certain customers. Used to really enjoy going here years ago. Not sure what happened to turn it into a place I probably won't ever go to again.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
The lobster roll was good, but this place is extremely overpriced. $4.50 for a tiny soft serve cone! The size was not much bigger than something I would get for $1 at McDonalds. The ice cream is just ok. Won't be visiting again.

Derek C.

Yelp
If you're looking to order horrible food at unbelievable rip-off prices from a hostile server and eat it at a filthy table while the countryside peace and quiet which used to be this place's one saving grace is ruined by the ugly thumping music emanating from the kitchen, then this is the place for you.

David R.

Yelp
Visited on a modestly busy Saturday afternoon. Service was fine. I ordered the extra thick frappe ($8) which was very disappointing; mainly tasted like milk with cheap Hershey's chocolate sauce and had a thin texture. We also ordered an overpriced soft serve which was unremarkable.

S. T.

Yelp
Drove by several times, and finally stopped by with my daughter. $10.00 for a medium waffle cone. Soft served vanilla ice cream was nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Sol C.

Yelp
Great soft serve swirls - the creamsicle and javaberry were both delicious. Huge portions even though we ordered a small. I loved the mix of ice cream with sherbet.

Hapasushi L.

Yelp
Good price for what you get. Seating is in front of trees. Nice shade. Calming atmosphere. Great for kids.

Al J.

Yelp
Way overpriced and the ice cream portions are much smaller than years back. But, all good things must come to and end. They are in a high rent district, so I am sure the locals have no issue with the cost. For me, personally, I do not mind paying the price if the portions did not shrink.

Yelp
One of Thrillist's (33 best ice cream shops in America" (5/17/15) But I didn't order any ice cream, just a couple of cheese burgers. They were OK, the not-too-thin griddled patties (served ~medium) were decent, served on a toasted bun with melted white American cheese. But expensive for what they were, given they charged an EXTRA $1.75 for adding lettuce and tomato. really? Really?? REALLY???
google avatar

JD H.

Yelp
Every year, we look forward to celebrating Spring with a visit to Dairy Joy. This year's visit was a terrible disappointment. The burger was just fine....no complaints. The grilled cheese sandwich was burned on one side and the cheese wasn't even melted on the other. The fries were really lousy - not crispy, kind of greasy and not what I was looking forward to at all. The soft serve was just plain yucky. It was chalky and the chocolate/vanilla swirl was pretty lame. (Hardly any chocolate or vanilla taste at all.) The whipped cream machine was not working right so they splurted out some wet mess on top of the ice cream. The hot fudge tasted like it came out of a great big can from 1983. This wasn't a bad day. A bad day could explain the grilled cheese and the sloppy whipped cream mess. However, if the food isn't sourced well - like the fries, the ice cream and the hot fudge - there's not reason to go back.
google avatar

dan w.

Yelp
$8.95 for hot dog with frozen fries and a coke. $5 for a small soft serve cone. Extra for dip. Enough said. Back to Dairy Queen.

David M.

Yelp
The last two places I have gotten big plates of fried clams, at two of the bigname North Shore outfits, they have been quite meh, to put it nicely, meaning overdone. So when I drove by DJ today, I thought Hmm, should I? It was fabulous. Pricy, maybe too pricy, but just perfect --- not overfried, juicy, and an almost fair amount for $49. Plus a small, perfect simply terrific lobster roll, also pricy, but whatever. I don't know if it is a new fry cook, somehow I think new, or the same as in the past, but they do a great job. I shall save up, then, and go back for more perfect fried clams. Will make the damn lobster at home myself :) .

Yelp
My father loves fried clams etc and my mom used to go Dairy Joy when she was younger. A friend told me about a place in Weston that had fried clams and ice cream, so decided to take my parents there for lunch. This is a classic walk up window type of place. It gave me this Happy Days feeling (if that makes sense). Prices were a bit high but seafood prices fluctuate so much I'll forgive it from time to time. My dad got a seafood plate while my mom got some clam strips and sweet potato fries. I opted for a sandwich as I knew they wouldn't eat all of theirs and could 'help' them finish. My parents both gave rave reviews of the food. The batter was just right and cooked well (not under or over done). Portion size was on point as well. They didn't get dessert but I went for a soft serve vanilla and it was by far one of the best I've had. Other than some market prices a little high overall a nice spot for lunch. As always never take my word and go see for yourself.

Melissa L.

Yelp
When I was there, I witnessed the owner shouting explosively at a customer in an extremely rude way to move his car. The customer may have parked in the wrong or bad place but he could have asked him politely to move his car. The customer was obviously slightly shocked at being shouted at.

AB B.

Yelp
The ice cream was great but the manager was so verbally abusive I was deciding between calling the police and walking away. And I chose the latter. He insulted a disabled customer, he yelled at a little boy and almost knocked over an elder. He had curly brown hair, a hat and earrings (just as an identifier, I'm all for hats and earrings). I will never go there again.

Carla S.

Yelp
Overpriced, unfriendly servers/cashiers, line very slow moving and not the greatest ice cream or root beer float. Such a cute place and wish it was better every time we go. Root beer float didn't have enough root beer (half full) and melty soft serve ice cream dripped in. Yuck. Chocolate dipped was a mess in my hand when she handed it to me. Wish they were friendlier and had a better product.
google avatar

Marie K.

Yelp
Remember to bring a fair amount of cash and you're all set for a great time! DJ is the best option around for a great variety of soft serve and dipped cones. My personal favorite is raspberry sherbet with the chocolate dip. The chicken fingers and fries are tough to beat-I make a point to have them at least once every season. This place does not take credit cards, so come prepared :)

Yelp
After a seriously hard day of bargain hunting at Frugal Fannie's a late lunch at Dairy Joy was absolutely crucial. We salivated over the frozen dairy options but needed sustenance and accordingly ordered clam strips (my first time trying these delicious crispy fried mollusks), burgers and sweet potato fries. All of this we ate on a picnic bench with the summer sun overhead; nothing could have been more pleasant. Sadly, we could consume no more after this feast and left without any dairy joy. I know, I know, sacrilege... Know before you go: it's cash only so bring your bills!
google avatar

Wendi A.

Yelp
Very disappointed! Took my kids for ice cream on a Wednesday afternoon. Very rude customer service, overpriced and the ice cream doesn't even taste great. Never again!
google avatar

Martha C.

Yelp
I feel badly writing this but think I should. We've gone for years. We know it's expensive, We know it's cash and no bathroom. But we've gone anyway, love the seafood and the ambiance. But again today, as it always is, the tables are not cleaned between people. In fact, they are gross. Lots of leftover food and drips of ice cream. They said they didn't have the staff to go and clean. I wish they would get this fixed. That's why I'm writing.
google avatar

Mary T.

Yelp
My first visit. I grew up in this area but haven't been around for 7 years. I decided to stop and get some fried clams (with bellies of course) at the first place I came across. I ordered a half pint cuz prices are crazy. But they were perfect! And they filled tiny container to the max. Cash only. They have an ATM there but why risk it-just bring cash!

Yelp
Good food! It was nice seating on their patio, but terrible cashier! Not good service!
