Ordinary and grossly overpriced. Poor service. Not worthy of a Michelin *.
I was very happy that I could get a last-minute reservation at a Michelin 1-star restaurant on Saturday night. Strangely, when I arrived, it was empty -- there was only one table taken. The menu was heavy on prestige dishes like abalone and shark's fin and then had a list of "home cooking" dishes. The beer and wine list was perfunctory. I was alone, so I ordered a pork dish and a dish of noodles with abalone. Both were competent, but I'd have done just as well with any one of hundreds of places in HK. In theory, even the simplest dish at a Michelin 1-star is special, made perfectly and presented well. I had thought that the noodles with abalone would be one of those dishes where a skilled chef takes a simple dish and magically elevates it. No, in this case, all the abalone did was make it more expensive. I was seated opposite a curtain leading to the kitchen, and could hear everything going on in the kitchen. The window was dirty. I ordered green tea and was served jasmine (which they corrected). I paid 750 HKD.
This is not a Michelin * restaurant. I have been to many many Michelin restaurants in Europe, and this place clearly does not qualify. The food, the service, the dining room, none of them are anywhere near a Michelin 1-star 2-fork standard.
