What Are Dosas and Why Aren’t There More South Indian Dishes on Menus? | Eater

"A Bengaluru institution for more than 80 years, this long-running tiffin spot—now also known as Shri Sagar—is especially famed for its butter-laden masala dosas served with filter coffee; its enduring popularity and extremely low prices in India highlight the stark cost differences diners face in the U.S." - Nikhita Venugopal

Excellent Experience at Central Tiffin Room! I had a truly fantastic experience at Central Tiffin Room. The food was absolutely delicious, deserving every one of its five stars – fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The service was equally impressive. The staff were attentive, polite, and efficient, making sure our dining experience was smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. The atmosphere was also wonderful – very pleasant and inviting, contributing to a relaxed and enjoyable meal. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast options here, which were outstanding. I highly recommend Central Tiffin Room for anyone looking for a superb dining experience!

Established in 1920, this is one of those hidden gem of malleshwara. Visited by Virat Kohli, Deepika padukone it has added another feather into the hat. Love their amazing mangalore bajji, benne masala dosa, signature coffee. Be ready to stand in queue to visit this nostalgic place. However, people do comment on food being overhyped, which is left to each individual.

With its rich history and immense popularity, this place truly embodies the essence of Bengaluru. Known for its crispy dosas, the taste and texture make every bite feel worthwhile. Alongside dosa, dishes like vada, khara bath, Kesari bath, and poori are equally exquisite, making this a personal favorite. Don't miss their specialty—Mangalore buns or goli baje—both are a must-try. Every meal here is best concluded with their signature filter coffee, which comes highly recommended. The staff is friendly, though the seating may feel a bit cramped for some. Due to its popularity, weekends can be crowded, leading to some wait time. However, with seating available on both the ground and first floors, the queue moves quickly. While prices have increased over the years, the history and authenticity of the place make it well worth it.

We finally visited CTR on a Sunday – and as expected, there was a huge queue! But honestly, the wait was only about 20-30 mins, and it went by pretty fast. Just a heads up – you might have to share your table with others, which we didn’t mind at all. It added to the charm somehow! Once we placed the order, there was a bit more wait (hungry tummy alert 😅), but the food made up for it. We started with the benne masala dosa – it was good, but personally, I’m more of a thin, crispy paper dosa kinda person, so the thick texture wasn’t my fave. But ohhh the aloo filling? So soft and flavourful. Loved it! The idli with sambar and chutney was chef’s kiss – super soft idli, flavourful sambar, and that coconut chutney? Yummm. And the real hero? That filter coffee! So perfectly balanced – strong, hot, frothy. We actually went for a second round because one cup just wasn’t enough. ❤️ Wrapped it all up with chow chow bath – a warm, sweet ending to the meal. Giving this a solid 4 stars just because of the wait and my personal dosa texture preference – but otherwise, such a lovely experience! Would happily visit again 💛

Love their crispy benne masala dose . Be ready to stand in a queue but yes not fr long time max 15-20 min we ll get seat in weekends . That vibe is just awesome. They also have usual south breakfast plain dose , khara bath kesari bath . A filter coffee at end will fulfill your day .

Aye, whatte place! I'm usually happy with home food only, but today CTR showed me what "Dosa nirvana " means. That "benne dose", crisp on the outside, soft inside – simply next level, boss. Chutney was so fresh, I wanted one more round just for that. Palya? Too good. Place was full-crowd, but that’s how you know food is solid. Old-school vibes, fast service, and every table full – typical Malleshwaram style. No show-off, just proper taste. After every bite, I was like "Maga, yen taste idu!"

Service and atmosphere were good. We ordered benne dosa and masala dosa with filter coffee. The filter coffee was good, but the dosa’s had way too much oil—so much that it got all over our hands. The excessive oil overpowered the taste of the dosa, making it difficult to enjoy. Oil was literally dripping from dosa. One feedback would be to maintain authenticity in the preparation. Will never prefer going, chutney was also different. Highly dissatisfied.

Central Tiffin Room (CTR) in Malleswaram is truly a landmark when it comes to breakfast in Bangalore. With its deep-rooted history and timeless charm, stepping into CTR feels like taking a trip down memory lane. The vintage ambiance, the aroma of fresh dosas, and the bustling atmosphere bring a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to find elsewhere in the city. We visited on a Saturday early morning and, unsurprisingly, had to wait around 20 to 25 minutes to get a table. The place is almost always crowded, but the waiting time is well worth it. Once seated, we ordered plain benne dosa, benne masala dosa, a plate of puri, kesari bath, and tea. Each item was delicious — the dosas were crisp on the outside and buttery soft inside, and the kesari bath was perfectly sweet and flavorful. The puris were puffed and served hot, and the tea was a comforting finish to a fulfilling meal. The staff were courteous and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our visit. Despite the rush, the service was smooth and efficient. If you’re in Bangalore, especially near Malleswaram, a breakfast visit to CTR is an experience you shouldn’t miss!
