"Before 2002, downtown Des Moines was fairly barren after office workers clocked out around 5 p.m. Then chef George Formaro took a risk with Centro, an Italian restaurant open for lunch and dinner. The gamble paid off, and 22 years later, a buzzing community of boutiques, music venues, restaurants, coffee shops, and apartments have joined the area. Centro is still fantastic, whether you split a pizza (half-price on Mondays), devour a grilled pork chop with Chianti demi-glace, or attempt to conquer the Kill-Bill Pork Tenderloin, a sandwich stuffed with crispy pork tenderloin, ham, bacon, cheese, and a sunny side up egg." - Karla Walsh

"When it opened in 2002, Centro was the crown jewel of downtown, and pretty much the only game in town. Seventeen years later, it’s still packed every night, serving mostly Italian dishes with a couple of safety items thrown in, like the cheeseburger and Greek salad, a common practice with menus around the city (another restaurant charmingly refers to them as “global comfort eats”). Its coal-fired oven puts out excellent pizzas, like George’s Favorite (named after chef-partner George Formaro), which features Italian sausage produced by Graziano Brothers, a local Italian grocery. The New Yorker, topped with meatballs, mushrooms, and roasted red peppers, is also a best-seller." - Gary He

Just the fact that they charged us to pay by credit card, and then we had to pay higher tax because of that, makes me not want to go back, and I enjoyed the salad, but the pizza was disappointing. We started with the Caesar which was very good and I liked the anchovies. The pizza was a four cheese with tomato sauce. Horribly tasteless, I make better pizza at home, and my tomato sauce actually has flavour. This was just coloured red and the entire pizza just tasted of garlic. It was tasteless bread with the texture of cheese that tasted like chunks of crushed garlic. Then to top it off, I realised once home that they charged an additional $1.61 (2.75%) to pay via credit card, and then the tax we paid went from $4.10 to $4.22. If anything this charge should be after tax and not increase our bill. This is daylight robbery and a disgrace to hard working people. We live down the road and we would have gone back, but this is just unacceptable

Wow. Centro is fantastic. This is easily the best Italian food in Des Moines and top 5 favorite Italian places I’ve ever been. Our server, Grace, was fantastic. I had the spicy sausage rigatoni and it was phenomenal. The desserts were unreal good. If you’re in Des Moines and looking for a high quality restaurant experience, I highly recommend Centro.

Guys, the salad could’ve been great if we could actually taste the vegetables — instead, it was drowned in a sweet dressing. The meat was extremely poor quality; we couldn’t even eat the steak. As for the service… it was disappointing. No one cleared the dirty plates, I didn’t even get a proper dinner plate and had to eat from a dessert plate. On top of that, the waitress brought all the food out at once and just stood there waiting while we scrambled to make room.

Our waitress Lainey did a wonderful job! Food was excellent. I am gluten free and they were careful to ask specific requirements about the cooking of my food.

My experience at Centro Restaurant in downtown Des Moines was absolutely fantastic! This Italian-inspired gem, led by Chef George Formaro, delivers fresh, flavorful dishes in a lively yet upscale atmosphere. The coal-fired oven pizzas are a standout—perfectly crisp with high-quality toppings like Graziano sausage and fresh mozzarella. I also loved the cavatelli with sausage, which was perfectly balanced with herbs and a rich, spicy tomato sauce. The service was attentive, and the portions were generous, leaving us eager to return for more. Whether you're grabbing a drink and pizza or enjoying a multi-course meal, Centro is a must-visit for anyone in Des Moines

Really blend and dry food feels like i was eating dirt. Dont order pizza, it was dried out. No sauce and the veggies tasted frozen. Dont order veggie burger, it tastes like dirt patty with no seasoning. Dont order bruschetta, i would like the chef to go to biaggis and try them out. The bread was so hard and burned up i could cut tomatoes with it. Ruined our anniversary. Restaurant saving up a lot on seasoning. The only good thing was service. The staff was helpful and served with a smile. .

A favorite in Des Moines!! Had a miscommunication with a pick up order, but they were able to crank it out in 20 min on a busy night. The bartender Nate made a fabulous cocktail while I waited and we were good to go! 👌

I don't usually write reviews, but I had to this time seeing as I had the best experience in a long long time last night! I am so positively impressed with the attention, care, and just genuine quality of this restaurant. To start off, I was so moved by the personalized menus, which said "Happy 22nd birthday!", after I briefly mentioned in my reservation that we would be celebrating a 22nd birthday. I never expected such attention to detail, it made me so happy! Our server was simply AMAZING. She was awesome, super attentive, took care of all our needs and more. We were never rushed out, we were able to sit and enjoy the moment for as long as we felt comfortable, which is so rare nowadays! The place itself is beautiful, with vintage flooring and dim lighting, truly took me right back to Europe. The food was DELICIOUS and it came in really nice portions! Easily some of the best pasta I've had and I also have leftovers!! I also loved the Tiramisu we were gifted at the end, as a treat for the special occasion. I wish I could put into better words how perfect of a 22nd birthday night I had here. Easily became my favorite restaurant in Iowa, will definitely be back to try more of their menu.
