"Ceremony teahouse and retail shop on the east side of Providence, Rhode Island, just around the corner from the Brown University bookstore, sources loose-leaf tea from small farmers in China, Taiwan, and Japan. Warm up with a matcha latte and a bowl of congee, or schedule a personalized tasting in the peaceful private tea ceremony room. For a quick cup, pop by Ceremony’s mini location on Brook Street." - Stasia Brewczynski

"This breezy cafe located near Brown University serves up teas from across Asia, in addition to cocktails, natural wine, fun iced and hot drink creations, and snacks. The best way to experience the breadth and depth of their offerings is to take part in a tea ceremony. This requires a special reservation that gets you an intimate tasting experience led by a tea apprentice, and doubles as a calming break from the swarms of tourists visiting Thayer Street and Brown. But if you’re just looking to switch up your morning caffeine routine, you can still stop by and order a cup of tea, or perhaps an iced strawberry matcha latte with a giant gummy bear." - grace kelly

"Michelle Cheng, who grew up in China before moving to Rhode Island at age 13, got her start in beverages by selling ethically sourced high-quality teas from China, Taiwan, and Japan through her wholesale business, Leafy Green. In 2019, she expanded her business into Ceremony, a modern tea house where you can book a tea ceremony to taste through the oolongs and senchas on offer, or pop by to pick up a hand-whisked strawberry matcha latte to go. The cafe recently added alcohol, including natural wine, sake, and makgeolli." - Jenna Pelletier

We stopped by on a busy Saturday around 5pm. The cappuccino quite honestly was perfect — creamy and frothy with smooth espresso. I had it with oatmilk which did not disappoint (.50 charge). The matcha latte was also impressive as it was very well balanced in flavor. The cafe was packed with people socializing and working on laptops, and the line was a little hard to understand but one of the cashiers quickly let us know where to go. When taking our order the man at the cashier was extremely kind, patient and helpful despite the slightly hectic atmosphere (he had bright blue eyes. Thank you!). The space is bright, clean, and sleek. I will definitely be visiting this cafe again and again.

Japanese cafe with amazing drinks and unique treats. A friend from Brown told me this was the best café in Providence, so my friend and I had to check it out. We stopped by for some light desserts and drinks and went with the strawberry matcha and black sesame latte, and both were fantastic. One of the coolest things? They hand-grind every matcha order in a stone bowl, which makes it taste smoother and more aromatic. The strawberry matcha was perfectly balanced—not overloaded with syrup, just a light glaze in the bottom half of the cup, giving it the perfect sweetness (just like in Japan). The black sesame latte was also amazing. Most places in the U.S. make them sweet, but this one had almost zero sugar, which highlighted the pure nuttiness and roasted depth of the black sesame. As for the sweets, we went with the taro pastry and the sweet soy dango. While they might not be as indulgent as the roll cakes or babka, they were perfect little bites. I especially loved the dango. When paired with the strawberry matcha, the chewy, bouncy texture made it feel like I was sipping on a matcha bubble tea. Such a fun combo. Highly recommend giving them a try if you’re in Providence. Just a heads-up—on weekends, students start lining up around opening to snag a table, so finding a spot to sit and relax might be tricky.

a little bustling if you have social anxiety like me BUT the menu, flavors, even the shelf/refrigerated goods make it all so worth it. I had a caramel pear matcha latte that was as delicious as it is beautiful. The flavors they have available you will find nowhere else. I’m so happy this place exists. I truly look forward to testing out the rest of their menu. I went about five pm on a Thursday and didn’t have a problem parking. Had to walk not even two minutes I’d say.

Overall: 4.5/5 [take out] We were lucky to find free metered parking right across from Ceremony since it was a Sunday. Ceremony has large glass windows, allowing you to see all the happenings inside. They offer a range of Asian-inspired drinks and food options, from egg sandos to hojicha lattes. Beyond being a coffee bar, they also feature a ceremony room and a bar that serves both mocktails and cocktails! Although it was crowded, it felt like organized chaos. Iced Strawberry Matcha ($6.50) + Oat Milk ($0.50) + Honey ($0.75): This was really good. The strawberry puree wasn't overly sweet, and it does require a bit of scraping off the cup's sides in order to mix it in. The drink itself was well-balanced with a smooth texture, and the perfect level of sweetness, even with the added honey. Iced Caramel Pear Latte with Espresso ($6.25) + Oat Milk ($0.50): I'd never seen a drink like this, so I had to try it. The espresso flavor came through without being overpowering or bitter and was complemented by subtle hints of caramel and pear. The cashier mentioned it was on the sweeter side, but I found the sweetness just right. The flavors also worked surprisingly well together :) I definitely recommend checking out this cute coffee shop. After we got our drinks, we enjoyed a stroll through Brown University and then headed to our lunch spot.

Ceremony has been on my list of cafes to visit in Providence and it didn't disappoint. We stopped by while we were in town on the Friday after Thanksgiving around 3pm and it was pretty packed. By the time we got our drinks, it cleared out a lot and we got counter seats. Seems like a popular place for people working on their laptops. I got the Adzuki Matcha Latte, which I really enjoyed. Not too sweet, and it had a nice balance of matcha flavor with the red bean.

An Internet-famous cafe near Brown University. Hojicha Latte is the best of the day! Also the Black Sesame Latte is good too. Matcha Red Bean is a bit sweet for me.

Japanese influenced coffee shop with great coffee and unique pastries. Various market items available as well. Coffee has a great flavor. I recommend adding a third shot to the iced latte, as it's a little milky with only two shots (16oz). Nice clean and bright vibes. SLAMMED busy and took about 10-15min alto get drinks (seems a large mobile order was being made). This place is going, but plan to stay a while, even on a Sunday.

Great atmosphere, very aesthetic. Wish they had more espresso flavors that weren’t fruity or floral, but I thoroughly enjoyed the brown sugar espresso. Ask for the bear (comes in strawberry, espresso and matcha for a surcharge). Very popular spot (understandably) gets full inside quickly but there’s seating outdoors too.
