15 Restaurants Worth the Drive to Portsmouth, New Hampshire

"Ceres Bakery, while named for the street of its original location, also honors the Roman goddess of agriculture. Bakers turn the fruits of Ceres’ harvest into breads, cookies, and pastries, and also offer daily selections of soup, salads, and sandwiches." - Celina Colby, Kate McCarty

Fabulous little place and so cozy. Wasn’t having a great week and treated myself to a proper sandwich. Lovely staff. Fair prices and fresh food/coffee Marvelous

I ordered a custom cake for my significant others birthday, and they exceeded all expectations. They suggested a blueberry crème filling, and it did not disappoint. I have never received so many compliments and questions on where I got the cake as it was the best tasting cake anyone had. Everyone was also enamored by the color and design. As someone who does not like cake, I loved this. The buttercream or frosting wasn’t that sickly sweet. Just perfect!

Google
We ordered three cakes for a family get together the gluten-free chocolate cake, the blueberry lemon, and the carrot cake. All were beautiful and absolutely delicious! Say we’re not overly sweet but delightful. Plus, they were soy free, which was important to several in our group

I heard Ceres had the best carrot cake, so I called to see if I could order one for my boyfriend’s birthday. I called towards the end of their day on a wednesday and they were able to have a carrot cake for me by friday! It was easy to order and the staff was kind and helpful! Everyone agreed it was the best carrot cake they’ve ever had. My boyfriend who usually isn’t a huge dessert person ate all of the left overs over the next week. I also picked up a chocolate croissant while i was in there and that might have been a mistake because now that’s all i think about…. it was delicious.

Stopped at Ceres Bakery on our way from Falmouth to Portland on the recommendation of a friend. My husband got the Roasted Turkey sandwich with garlic aioli and I ordered the Kale Salad as a wrap with added Tofu. Easy and quick to-go lunch. Bakery was cute, employees were friendly, food was good, bathroom was not great…

Google
This place was the BEST little cafe! We were so lucky to stumble across it. The food was incredible and the atmosphere was so fun and the prices were great. It felt like I was in Europe. The workers were friendly and nice. We got the egg sandwiches, which were perfect for breakfast and delicious. We got a blackberry cardamon muffin and a raspberry rhubarb tart to go. We took them out to the water to enjoy 😁 I would HIGHLY recommend Ceres Bakery and we will definitely go back next time we are in the area!

Google
This is such a beautiful and charming bakery. Everyone here is very very sweet, and it made us wish we lived closer so we could come here all the time. They have a big variety of delicious looking breads and pastries. My egg and croissant sandwich was really fantastic: extremely buttery and decadent. This bakery is worth coming to just for the friendly service!

Google
First time ever experiencing ceres bakery! I ordered a birthday cake for my Granddaughter's birthday and it was so delicious and perfect!!! Everyone commented on how good it was!! I will be ordering cakes again!! Love ❤️

Yelp
Found this spot covered in ivy and looking so cute! I got the ham and cheese croissant and the blackberry peach muffin, which were both delicious. The muffin had chunks of blueberry and peach, and although the inside didn't taste like either, it was still sweet and yummy. The croissant also only had a tiny spot of rolled ham and cheese, but the rest was super buttery. Such a cute cafe and definitely recommend!

Yelp
This place has been around for decades but it was my first time here. I had a lovely tart and a cup of coffee while sitting outside enjoying a weekend morning. All baked goods and sandwiches look great, a true local gem.

Yelp
Great pastries and coffee! The staff is very friendly as well. There are some tables to sit inside as well. I tried both the cinnamon roll and the ginger peach scone. Both delicious!

Yelp
A fun Bakery/ eatery in downtown Portsmouth. Warm and inviting. Great spot for lunch or breakfast. They also provide all sorts of baked goods.

Yelp
I high recommend the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. We bought the cake for my mother in law's birthday and we all loved it. Very friendly service and we are happy to support this wonderful longtime Portsmouth business.
google avatar

Yelp
Their pastries are amazing! The cinnamon roll I got was delightful and flaky like a croissant . And the berry scone was simply perfect in sweetness. The staff are so accommodating and really nice. All around wonderful spot!

Yelp
Ordered a cake to pickup during our vacation. Prompt and efficient communication. Very reasonable prices and DELICIOUS cake. Highly recommend the lemon blueberry. Grabbed a sandwich when I picked it up and it was great too!

Yelp
Stopped for sandwiches as we were driving from Maine to CT. Bread was very fresh and tasty. Sandwiches were large and delicious. Pastries looked great, although we didn't try any.

Yelp
This place is ceres-ly good for a relaxed breakfast. I was vacationing in Portsmouth with my husband and anther couple. We have come here to refuel during both trips some years apart. During this latest visit we came in at the very end of breakfast service but the guy at the front was nice enough to extend to us the last breakfast sandwiches. I liked mine with spinach and my hubby liked his with bacon. Our friends were put off a bit by the texture of the egg but I liked it and the fact that it was cut to the size and shape of the bread. Good coffee. Good eco friendly service and disposing. I'd come again given the opportunity.

Yelp
One of the best oatmeal raisin cookies I ever had. Very reasonable prices. Love the low key atmosphere. Highly recommended

Yelp
Excellent bakery and lunch spot. Kale salad, gazpacho, fresh sourdough bread, rhubarb tart. All outstanding. Staff and owner super friendly and helpful. Nice indoor and outdoor seating. Highly recommend this little gem.

Yelp
Popped in for some quick morning food since my friends and I woke up super hungry. Unlike usual, I had the energy this morning for an early go and the place looked really cute. The egg wrap I had was fine but it wasn't as good for me as it was for my friends. They got the egg salad sandwiches and some pastries and they were super into it. I kinda just sat there waiting for them to finish but it was okay because they were clearly enjoying themselves so much and it makes me happy to see them happy. Fortunately it didn't take too long and they left and went back to sleep and I was able to get some really nice alone time.

Yelp
This place is very cute and adorable and you can just tell that this place is very homey and everything is homemade and fresh everyday. The people are very nice and service is very personable and friendly. There's plenty of seating and a lot of pastry options both sweet and savory. They also have hot sandwiches available, coffee and tea and their bar where you get utensils and stuff even has croutons and sunflower seeds for you to take!! I tried the quiche and cinnamon coffee cake which were both good but didn't blow my mind. You get a very large piece of the coffee cake for the price though.

Yelp
An absolute gem. If you're looking for breakfast or lunch with homemade aesthetic and unmatched taste, you need to try this spot. When people say "worth the wait," they're talking about Ceres, and rightfully so.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time today and we loved it! It's small and busy, but the employees were very friendly and everything moved fast. They have a huge selection of baked goods as well as menu items on the board. I love how they have a build your own sandwich with so many unique toppings! Half sandwich option is also great. We went with a turkey, bacon , lettuce, sprouts, pickled onion, cheddar, mayo, sandwich on white bread. It was delicious!! All the ingredients were plentiful and most importantly fresh. The bread was super soft and tasty. This is my new favorite sandwich spot!

Yelp
Been to Ceres bakery two times. Each time I was waiting at the counter waiting for service while all the employees continued to talk The cakes are good, the service is horrible. There are plenty of bakeries in town...dont need to go back there .

Yelp
Your one stop shop for freshly-baked pastries and bread, coffee and tea, and scrumptious breakfast and lunch - just make sure you have cash. We get pastries here before our annual family boat ride, and they are always a big hit! The almond croissant and almond peach muffin are especially delicious, though we've enjoyed all their treats - and I do mean all, we buy for a big group. Each one is freshly-baked, and they have a wide selection of coffee cakes, scones, muffins, cookies, et cetera, often adjusted for the season. The baked goods come in very generous portions, and I think are fairly priced for their size and quality. There's often a line - especially on weekend mornings - which indicates its popularity, but the service is always very quick and friendly. They don't accept credit or debit cards currently, so make sure you have cash.

Yelp
This is your perfect lunch stop. Walk in order your sandwich, pick your bread, add your fave toppings and have it made to perfection! The staff are all overly helpful and super nice, ask what their favorite is -- I have never once gotten the same answer. Rotating art that is usually really good, fun outside chairs and delicious cookies to have for desert! Ceres street has an amazing hometown feel, and excellent food to boot -- nothing is fake here, enjoy it a place like this seems to become more rare every day.

Yelp
Tasty chicken salad sandwich has leeks instead of onion, making for a sweeter flavor fest. Hot apple cider worked wonders on a cold March day. Irish soda bread seemed like a black market commodity. Didn't get to try it because it wasn't on the menu. But that didn't stop the ordering line which had a number of folks picking up their unmarked paper bags of goodies. Best of all -- there's a gas fireplace to heat your buns. Oh yeah!
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
The egg wrap was amazing. Friendly staff and good coffee as well. Only wish there were a few outlets to plug in electronics but that is a small wish for an otherwise great spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Omg. Is this place the coolest place and amazing danish, egg sandwiches and homemade bread including day old bread at half price. BEST cafe in Portsmouth and its so much more. Did I mention the soups?! Still the best bakery and breakfast in Portsmouth. 5/2019

Yelp
We visited on a Saturday morning. I wanted to try the cardamom coffeecake but that wasn't available. So we got a blueberry scone and a blueberry muffin, each for $2.50. Both were good. Black coffee was strong. This is a cute little bakery and cafe.
google avatar

Jeannem M.

Yelp
Best Pastry and lunches for a reasonable price. They also have great coffee. A fun place to eat.
google avatar

Bill D.

Yelp
Went for bread, $5 for a loaf of white. Was going to get a muffin too but it was $7.50 based on the sign. Not sure if that could be true. No Italian bread either that I could see. We ended up leaving because of the high prices, wound up at Tuscan Market and got everything we needed for much less. It's a nice Italian market and pastry shop.

Yelp
I haven't updated my Ceres Bakery review in almost two years, so it's time. Ceres is a good lunch place. It frequently feels sort of heavy on the vegetarian stuff, but vegetables won't kill me. What I usually get from Ceres Bakery is some kind of already made lunch to go, and it's consistently good. The one thing that sometimes stops me is when the line is out the door. Locals are likely to be found at Ceres, and the tourists flock to Popovers. I'll side with the locals on this one. I can't comment much on the breads but the prepared lunches are worth the walk from the other side of town and I've always finished any piece of their bread which is included in a lunch. This is a good place to buy something to eat in Prescott Park.

Yelp
I've been coming to Ceres for years and it is hands down my favorite place in Portsmouth. The coffee is delicious and so affordable. The egg wraps are magically delicious. The egg sandwich is great too! Summer Salad is a tasty and easy go to. The daily lunch specials are always fresh and delish. I can't say enough great things about Ceres!

Emily M.

Yelp
Stopped by for breakfast on our way out of town and were not disappointed. I don't think that I'd be able to stop myself from coming every morning if we lived here. I got the ham and cheddar croissant and my bf got a egg sandwich wrap. Both hit our savory fix. If it wasn't the last one I would've gone back for more. He got a raspberry danish which was delicious and I took a mixed berry scone to go. Perfect treat for when we returned home and not too sweet.

Yelp
Stopped into Ceres Bakery on my way out of town for a quick bite of breakfast to eat. I ended up going with a classic egg sandwich, on wheat bread, spinach, tomato and cheese. It was the perfect start to my morning. The wait staff was very friendly and patient as I quickly scanned the menu. It was very busy (looked to be a lot of locals as everyone seemed to know everyone) - my kind of restaurant!
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
Locals place. Not Martha Stewart. Tourists and groups will like Popovers better. Limited tables. Small scale. Please don't take that one open table that magically appears when we show up. :) Consistently amazing egg wraps, lunch, everything. Good coffee in a mug. Amazing bakery products.get the Anadama bread. Amazing flats... Who would believe what looks to be dried pesto pizza could be so interesting and flavorful/durable? Enjoy the local artwork that lines the walls. The people who run the bakery are heros, who make bakery magic. One of my very favorite places in Portsmouth. Thanks for supplying my addiction... that you created.

Yelp
I really enjoy their make your own sandwiches. Both the turkey and the tofu are consistently good, and they have lots of nice choices for veggies to add. Surprisingly delicious egg sandwiches. Got mine with egg, bacon, spinach and cheddar on normal bread. Wasn't expecting much but it was delicious! My only complaints: a lot of times the daily specials sound delicious, and I want to try them but they ALWAYS seem to include the same few weird ingredients for some reason. They could definitely switch it up every now and then. It is clear whoever creates the specials makes them based upon their own personal tastes. I have also had some unpleasant exchanges with the staff on occasion. My first time picking up a call in order I was rudely reprimanded for asking if I needed to wait in the long line or if I could grab it at the register. Overall, tasty food if you order the right thing. I live in town and still sometimes find the customers off-putting at times. Definitely a Portsmouth "local's spot"; people will be weird if you don't know the drill.

Yelp
This bakery has become our regular stop-over for road trips. We stock up on bread and baked goods and enjoy whatever lunch specials they have. Very good coffee. Relaxing atmosphere. I cook all my food, and don't like most restaurants we find on the road. This one is up to my standards! The food is imaginative and simply prepared. There is nothing pre-fab about it. The breads are perfect. Try one of their specials. We had a curry dish that was big enough for two.

Yelp
Probably my favorite place to grab lunch in Portsmouth! Always fresh, unique and delicious! Cash only but do have an ATM Onsite. This is a special place!

Yelp
I have been going to Ceres for years and have always left happy. The perfect lunch or breakfast place.

Yelp
Great Bakery. Rustic kitchen. Everyone is so friendly. Everyone's a neighbor. Fresh muffins, scones, tarts. Smells great, tastes delicious.

Yelp
this place is awesome. Great fresh food. Always appreciate the worker's attitude at this store. They seem to really care about the food and customers that come in.

Yelp
Cute old fashioned bakery in downtown. Large display case with cookies and bars. Place also serves sandwiches and drinks. Got a cookie and a coconut shortbread, prices are reasonable. There's some seats outdoors also.
google avatar

Noor B.

Yelp
Very nice little bakery. It's cash only, so make sure you have a few bills on hand. The kitchen sink cookie was wonderful - moist and full of dried cranberries and white chocolate. The chocolate chip cookie was also very good - not too chewy, and not too crunchy. Brownie was rich and lovely and not too heavy on the nuts. They have several nice loaves of fresh bread and some other pastries I wish I could have tried. I would stop in again!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great local and friendly party, lunch or dessert, you've got to stop in. Be warned - everything looks so good that you'll over-order :-)
google avatar

Yelp
First rate baked goods. Reasonable prices. Good selection. Recommended.

Yelp
[my indie senses are tingling] . . . . . .or maybe it's some of their horseradish spread waking up my wee schnoz. Either way - this bakery is brilliant! It's been one of my hipster favorites for eons - tucked away on a side street, GREAT selection (mostly veg), INCREDIBLE flavor, 100% reasonable prices, and most wonderful smiley service. Small eat-in cafe area, but perfect for writers and readers. *DAILIES! Every day has a new sandwich/pizza/soup/bread special (information available online so that you can prepare for your visit) - but once it's gone, it's gone so act fast! [yesterday the lady beside me snatched up the last two loaves of Anadama and I was SOL] *TREATS! Ooooo the treats! Cookies/bars/tarts/cakes/pies (vegan! gluten-free! sweet-tooth daredevils! come hither!) You can also call ahead to order said treats for take-away. *[[[sandwiches]]] you can order the special (usually around $7.50) or build your own (full size ~7.50; half size ~3.75). Pick your filler, 3 toppings, spread & bread (pickle on the side? YES). *[YESTERDAY] I had a half sandwich of Asian marinated tofu + lettuce/sprouts/cucumber + horseradish spread = INCREDIBLE! The half size was perfection because I had also ordered their raspberry/chocolate brioche.....which rocked my world, comforted it.....the shook it up all over again. TREAT YOUR TASTEBUDS TO THAT BRIOCHE!!!!!! Cere's is a hug for your mouth ( - go get a hug).

Yelp
I ordered a birthday cake for my daughters 9th birthday 7 days before I needed it. I ordered a checkered cake with a drawing of a mermaid on it. They said they do not decorate cakes but could draw one on with frosting. My daughter and I agreed and paid in full. 24 hours before I am suppose to pick up my cake, they call to tell me that they cannot draw on a mermaid. This was the entire point of her birthday cake. She then proceeds to tell me that I can go to Michaels and put decorations on myself. Now I am trying to find someone who can decorate a cake last minute. Thanks Ceres bakery

Yelp
Ceres is the absolute best. Danica baked and decorated some stunning cakes and pies for our wedding last weekend. So delicious and beautiful. Also, check out their sandwiches and cookies and bread and granola.

Ray R.

Yelp
A friend recommended that this place had a great breakfast sandwich so I thought that I would swing by. The sandwich was so so for a breakfast sandwich. The croissants were great. Cashiers seem salty but it was early Sunday morning.
google avatar

Kathy T.

Yelp
I've eaten here so much, from when they were down on Ceres Street to the Penhallow location. It's always been great! Everything made from scratch. If you are smart you should go before noon. There is limited seating and the place fills up with locals and regulars. If its nice out they do have outside chairs and side tables if the inside it full. You can also get your food to go. The menu changes everyday which is nice. They have full meals, sandwiches, soups, pizza, flatbreads, cookies and treats, teas and coffee. Some highlights: Quiches are delicious Salad with the homemade green goddess dressing Lemon chicken orzo Gingerbread scones Chai tea is made for you not from a concentrate Cocoa heart cookies Loaf of plain white bread is fluffy and superb for $4 Prices are stuck in a time warp! The value is amazing! Sometimes they do run out of certain things, but everything is usually pretty yummy!

Yelp
A bit cramped but what a wonderful bakery.. And not just sweets. These folks specialize in breads. The staff is friendly and helpful and really seem to know their product. Great spot off the major beaten path of downtown Portsmouth and awesome coffee too. Those who haven't tried it must do so. Those who have owe it to ourselves to keep going back

Yelp
I'm definitely a big fan of the Ceres Bakery. I came here last Friday for lunch with a buddy, and while there was quite a line, it moved quickly because the folks that work behind the counter are totally efficient. I was looking forward to ordering a curried chicken salad, and unfortunately they ran out literally one customer before me. However, the young lady that was taking my order suggested their chicken curry on jasmine rice and offered to throw some greens in it to give me more of a salad-type feel. The curry was good, but not great. The piece of pizza that my buddy and I split was damn tasty though, and every other time I've had pizza there it's been well worth getting. I purchased a cookie for later consumption, a snitz, which I'm pretty sure is my all time favorite cookie. I can't go to the Ceres Bakery without buying one, and I'm lucky if I can get out the door without breaking off at least a little piece. So, while my curry was not the highlight of my lunch, I have to give CB bonus points for the great customer service and efficient counter service. They also put chairs out front because the weather was nice, which was fantastic. If you don't mind waiting in line for a couple of minutes at lunch, I feel like the CB is worth your time and money. Speaking of, make sure you bring cash, no cards allowed.

Yelp
I got a sandwich and my husband got a quiche, we enjoyed them but not so much that I'd rush back.
