12 Best Indian Restaurants in Charlotte | Eater Carolinas

"Vegetarians and vegans are the star patrons here at this Ballantyne establishment near Stonecrest. Delight in street foods like chaat, mostly bite-sized rice crackers or puff pastry offerings like a savoury Punjabi aloo samosa or Bombay vada pav (potato fritter in a bun). Or choose from dosas, which are large, thin, lightly crispy crepes typically made of rice and lentils. However, millet (ragi dosa) and semolina (rava dosa) varieties are also here, with most menu items under $15." - Shindy Chen

Google
Really authentic (I love that they have a lot of Southern Indian cuisine!) with a massive menu. The food was fresh and delicious, though the drinks were a little subpar in comparison. The prices are pretty good for the amount of food you get, so I'll definitely be coming back to try out other dishes. There's not a lot of staff out front, so after ordering from the computer kiosk, you're mostly left to yourself, which could be entirely fine, unless you have questions.

Google
One authentic Indian restaurant to have chats. We tried 3 types of dosas as we went on Tuesday, we got offer on dosas. Also we tried chole, Dahi Poori and samosa chat. Price is very reasonable Taste is really amazing. Varieties of Chutneys are served unlimited. I liked their aloo sabji served with dosas. Their service was quick ♥️

Google
Amazing food at amazing price. Unlimited sambhar and 4 kinds of chutney for every guest. So much variety and everything is cooked fresh, right as you order it. Always very busy, but service is always quick and accurate. Family of 4 can comfortably eat dinner and snacks and chai for $50 or less, and the food is delicious. 100/10.

Google
One of best places to have Dosa, Dahi Puri and Alu Chaat. Everything is excellent in taste and presentation also. Sambhar with four accompaniments chutneys was finger licking stuff. And Ratheesh service and follow-up was very personal. Love this place.

Went for the first time and one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Charlotte NC. Food taste and quality are extremely good. Authentic Bharat style and zero side effects. Ratheesh is an amazing guy who got us everything needed Weekend breakfast buffet is excellent. Loved this place

Google
This was the first time I was here. Definitely not the last!! The atmosphere is good. It's a very simple place with bunches of tables and not much decor. It was standing room only for the entire time I was there and nobody minded the wait. I ordered from the digital menu but also asked several people about their dishes and the items they recommended. Ratheesh took care of my while I was there and he was excellent about answering questions and his service was prompt and polite. Finding a good dosa place is difficult. I live in Savannah and there is only one. On top of that, the pani puri live was totally fun and great food. It was my first time having that dish and it came recommended by another couple and was an active dining experience worth trying. Overall, this place was amazing and the crowd there just confirms it. Even though it's a vegetarian menu, the dishes are so hearty and plentiful, you will never miss the meat. I would 10 out of 10 recommend you try this place. It's totally worth the drive from almost anywhere.

Google
I had the pleasure of being served by Ratheesh , and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. From the moment we were seated, Ratheesh was warm, attentive, and incredibly professional. He anticipated our needs without being intrusive, offered thoughtful recommendations, and made sure everything came out just right.

Yelp
We tried their weekend breakfast buffet. Has South Indian breakfast items. Has good options and Sambar was very very good. Their medhu vadai was sour for some reason which was not good. Very good for the price. The place has good seating and it's overall clean.

Yelp
This was one of my first times having authentic indian cuisine, and it certainly didn't disappoint. My dear friend are vegan, and this is one of their favorite spots. I can see why! Luckily, I had them order their favorite dishes. Everything was so delicious. From the various chutney flavors to the lentil soup, fry bread, and dosa, it was so very tasty. Do note that it is self-service. You order at a kiosk, get your own chutney, and drinks. They simply bring out your food (on paper plates). While the service left something to be desired, the food was great.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the authentic Indian street food and snacks available at Chaat n Dosa. I had the chole bature but other members of our party ordered the samosa chaat. Both were delicious. We also ordered the family sized dosa and found it hard to finish between 5 people. We tried 3 slices of cake - butterscotch, chocolate, and strawberry shortcake. They were good, but you could tell they had been sitting in the display case for a while. Not to worry though - Chaat n Dosa does offer cakes specially made for events and these look extremely impressive!

Yelp
This chaat N Dosa location is a place for real Dosas. I have tried their paneer masala dosa, which was soo delicious and the aloo ( potatoes) were soo yummy. Me and my kids loves it. Bhatura ( fried big round tortilla bread) is soo soft and melts right in your mouth. Samosa and medhu Vada was good and it taste better with green coconut chutney. My fav!! I love everything from this location and great customer service. Definitely go to !

Yelp
Outstanding service! They are happy to help you decide what to get. Everything I have tried has been wonderful. I start to eat so fast and forget to take pictures of my food! I have visited about 5 times, every time I am anywhere nearby! Always consistently delicious!

Yelp
This is a great place in a small shopping center. There's plenty of shared parking in the parking lot. The staff were friendly and welcoming. They have a computer screen where you can place your orders when you walk up or you can place it with the employee who's in the front The seating area is all inside. The food is very tasty and seasoned well. The prices are reasonable and affordable. They have several vegan options to the vegetarian meals. I hope that you enjoy as much as I did.

Yelp
Finally tried this spot out for lunch and would recommend stopping by. You order from a kiosk so if you're not familiar with Indian street food, you may feel overwhelmed by the menu. The prices are very reasonable and the food came out quickly. The restaurant itself is low frills and the food is authentic. There were a lot of people there and the staff was efficient and nice. I loved the samosa chaat. I also got a combo platter that I liked some parts of (paratha, daal, soup, and dessert were excellent) and didn't like other parts of (rice and curry were not to my liking). I would order something else next time like a dosa combo. The chai was unsweetened but otherwise balanced.

Yelp
Buffet morning review 1. Vada is very small 2. Poori looks like taco chips with full of oil. One pori split to 6 saggy taco chips. 3. Idly is not soft 4. Sambar is not tasty Overrated for 9.99 but need to take of stomach on a weekend. Owner has deleted my review in a group chat and very rude on response

Yelp
Passing through the area and my wife was in need of some comfort food. We stopped here to order take out. For us the place was perfect, reminded us of food from various family members back home. Food tasted great and I am glad chance has us stop here. I look forward to returning to eat again.

Yelp
This place's food gave me great joy- lovely although the chutneys I ordered & paid extra for did not match the ones I got - mango pickle instead of onion chutney, but hey- it was still tasty. And authentic. Was wonderful to be able to order online & just pick it up. (You do kind of have to already be familiar a bit with Indian & this type of 'snack' food to order from here). Also, was frustrating that the ordering menu online for yelp was different than the ordering platform the store directly uses (larger more interesting!) The store platform required all my information- mailing address, etc.- for me to order online, which is ok for billing but....did not submit a card at that time. (And told me after confirming it received my order that I was agreeing to receiving promo contact from the seller- not thrilled about that either.) Appears that if you order in the store, you may need to pay debit or cash (can't totally confirm the details tho- I was starving when I picked up my food & read that in passing, with slight confusion). Did not include or offer any plasticware or napkins either for a sizeable to go order- guessing could have grabbed some on the way out. (In addition to other items, I bought 2 different curry meals which included rice & roti- also wonderful). All said, I'd definitely go back but would order & choose to dine in. Dining in ambiance is not more than a snack shop set up but just would be a nice change from taking out. Plus I spent way too much money by ordering at a distance Next time I'll slow down & take pics of the food I eat- we were ravenous and couldn't be slowed down for such things.

Yelp
What a refreshing a change to Indian food scene in Charlotte. I really enjoyed my food here - chole Bhature was so tasty. That bhatura was soooooo good! Reminds me of eating one in India. Dahi puri was just okay - didn't like as much. We also tried vada sambhar and that was good. There was 2 types of Sambhar, and both were tasty. We then tried Dabeli - which was again just okay. Nothing great. Overall I liked the place - I would love to revisit and try some more items on the menu.

Yelp
This place has more or less become our Friday go to spot. It has a very casual dining feel with a varied menu featuring a lot of variety of dosas and chat items. You can't really go wrong with any of the dosa items. Service is quick as well. I haven't really cared much for the chat , it's kinda okay but pales in comparison with the southern fare! My daughter loves the vada pao! The owner is a really welcoming and kind person and we are happy to be regular patrons here!

Yelp
Masala dosa fantastic!! Curries & all perfect Such low prices!!!!!! How do they do it?

Radhi C.

Yelp
Even though ambiance is super basic, South Indian food, specially dosa is crispy and delicious eaten together with their unlimited chutney(coconut and ginger) and sambhar(madras and another no onion version). Kids liked the mango lassi, though one said it was a bit watered down. Loved seeing a water station, eco friendly plates and containers and a hand wash station. They also have pastries and snacks available for purchase - haven't tried those yet.

Yelp
A popular Indian café in Charlotte's Ballantyne neighborhood, this vegetarian and vegan-friendly establishment serves up tons of spice (flavor) and tasty snacks. There is online ordering available and if you order on your phone, you'll receive 5% off your purchase. There's also a self-serve bar for chutneys and sauces. What I tried: MEDU VADA- Crispy fried donut made with lentil batter and mixed with spices. - Pairs perfectly with the coconut and ginger chutneys. IDLI - Steamed cakes made with rice and lentil batter, served with sambhar and chutneys. - Shines best when paired with the chutneys as the spread provides the flavor. MASALA DOSA - Dosa filled with mashed potatoes and spices. - Absolutely delicious. CHOLE BHATURE- Bhature is a fluffy, deep fried thin bread. Made with plain flour, fried and served with chickpea curry (chole). - MANDATORY - the buttery taste is KING. ALOO TIKKI CHAAT - Aloo Tikki is a snack made of boiled potatoes, peas, curry spices, and topped with garbanzo and tamarind chutney.- The yogurt in this dish gives it a slight sweetness which I loved. Also featured in Reel: Cone Dosa Coconut Chutney Madras Sambar Ginger Chutney

Yelp
We went to this restaurant for the 2nd time this past weekend. We never really know what we are ordering, but it doesn't matter because it is ALL DELICIOUS! The thing in the bowl was Samosa Chaat, and may be the best Indian food I have ever had! Some things I love about Indian food is you can mix the different dishes different ways and get a delightfully different flavorful spoonful with every bite! And the spices just make you feel good! You should check this place out!

Karyn P.

Yelp
The whole package! Food is spicy for my daughter & husband. There is mild for me. The service is fast, we did stay in & take out both. "Bread" selections are superb.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after my friend and I left the movie theater on Rea Road. Found it on Yelp and the reviews were good so why not? Overall the food was good, service was ok. Very popular spot, they had a steady flow of customers. Order food on a kiosk and wait for your order to be up. The challenge for me was being unfamiliar with Indian food and not having someone readily available to ask questions. When we were able to find someone there was little enthusiasm on their part to interact with us. We ended up ordering a variety of items to try between us since they were reasonably priced below $10. The reason I gave 3 stars is for cleanliness. The tray that our food came out on did not appear completely clean although it had been wiped down. We moved tables because the first table looked like the last customers had a field day and left all of their food under the table. The rest of the restaurant definitely needed to be swept. I was unsure if we came at a bad time but we were there over an hour and no efforts to sweep. Again, food was good, prices were great but the bland customer service and upkeep is why I will not be back.

Yelp
This is my authentic Indian street food restaurant. There are many that are like it, but this one is mine. I have been to many Indian street food restaurants and Chaat N Dosa is second to none of them. Recently, my wife and I ordered their family meal for 3 which comes with 9 items--3 chaats/snacks, 3 tiffins/dosas/combos/thali, and 3 desserts/drinks. Specifically, we tried Dabeli, Bhel Puri, Dahi Bhalla Papdi Chaat , North Indian Thali To Go, Malabar Parotta with Curry, Chole Bhature, Rasamalai, Gulab Jamun, and Mango Lassi. Every single one of these dishes blew me away. I would recommend them all.

Yelp
When Tonya says I need to try a new Indian place, I know I need to prioritize trying it. Covid-19: you can order and pay online. The food was ready and waiting for us when we got there. We got their family meal for 3. This comes with 3 chaats, 3 Tiffins/Dosas/Thalis/Combos, and 3 desserts/drinks. I loved this option. 3 desserts was probably a little more than we needed, so I probably would have rather had more chaats. This was an insane amount of food. We only eat once a day, so my husband and I usually eat for 3 people between the two of us. The amount of food we got lasted us for 6 meals. It's definitely enough food for 5-6 people. I love leftovers, so no complaints here. We got Dabeli, Bhel Puri, Dahi Bhalla Papdi Chaat , North Indian Thali To Go, Malabar Parotta with Curry, Chole Bhature, Rasamalai, Gulab Jamun, and Mango Lassi. We tried several new to us dishes and my favorite new discoveries were Dabeli, Malabar Parotta, and Dahi Bhalla Papdi Chaat. I've had Bhel Puri and Chole Bhature before and loved them here too. Of the desserts, we loved the Mango Lasso and the Gulab Jamun which we have had before. The Rasamalai wasn't my favorite though. Their whole menu is vegetarian which is fine with me because while I'm not vegetarian, I always eat vegetarian at Indian restaurants. It's also street food focused which I love. I can't wait until the pandemic is over so I can come back with Tonya and order the entire menu. This place is now my favorite Indian restaurant!

Dudine J.

Yelp
I do have to say, the menu is pretty long and no information about the food description. The place is easy to find. Easy to order using a kiosk. The person who brings th food out is the person who can take cash orders. Food came out quickly. The place seemed authentic because I saw many families from the region enjoying the food. Since I didn't understand the menu, I tried to order things which seemed easy and simple to understand. The restaurant is 100% vegetarian. I feel like ti truly understand the importance and concept of this street food restaurant, you need someone from the region to help you along. I feel a customer like myself lack the knowledge to truly appreciate the cuisine and the experience.

Yelp
A vegetarian spot with South Indian treats. It is open for indoor dining, and several other parties were there. I got a dosa and idli combo with a dessert, and a fried bread over chickpeas. I ordered a poori, but honestly it seemed more like a bhatura (the former is whole wheat and tends to be smaller, while the latter is a larger white bread). I underestimated the size of all of this, probably because the price was quite nice. I ended up with a substantial dosa (with a small bit of filling) and an absolutely huge bread that I couldn't quite finish, a sad an unusual event for me. I'd order differently if I had another shot at it, but I'd definitely go back. For the uninitiated, I'd definitely recommend a Thali, which is basically a sampler platter. They had a lot of delicious-looking things.

Yelp
Hands down best consistent Indian snacks fast and friendly service. All menu items are good

Yelp
If you know what to order, food is pretty good. My go to for quick Indian food take out.

Aleeza L.

Yelp
This place is not beginner friendly but I promise it is well worth learning how it works because it's the best chaat and dosa I've had in Charlotte thus far. The main thing to consider is that this place relies on it's patrons being independent and understanding that it's a fairly self-serve type of place. This is not a place to expect any white-glove serving. 1. If you're unfamiliar with what chaat and dosa are... Please look at the menu before going and do your Google searches prior. Choose 2-5 items for 2 people. 2. There are 2 places to order at the main counter. Left kiosk has been self-serve with card only. The right kiosk switches between self-serve and someone taking your order. It depends on how busy they are. 3. The self-serve kiosks are fairly easy to use but be mindful and refer to step 1 so you don't take up a lot of time ordering at only 1 of 2 kiosks. 4. Once you order, grab a table and grab some chutneys, cutlery, napkins, water, from the long wall. It's all self-serve. 5. Listen for your name to be called. Items will be called out as they're prepared and will likely not all come out at once. Don't be shy telling a server if you haven't received everything yet. They've got a ton of things in motion in the back kitchen. Our go-to order: Paneer Tikka masala Dosa Samosas Chole batura or thali Pani puri Mango lassi (All under $50 and we are stuffed) I know this isn't so much a review as a "how to enjoy chaat n dosa" instructions... But I just don't want people to misjudge this place due to their own preconceived notions of how a restaurant "should" run. The model works for them and the food is unmatched in Charlotte... So... Support this small business so we can enjoy chaat and dosa for many years to come!! Also... If you're still nervous to go... Hit me up and we'll go together. I won't turn down a chance to go. I'll teach you so more people can fall in love with this place.

Yelp
This is a vegetarian restaurant. The food is very tasty and fresh. The restaurant is spacious. Service is okay. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
This review is for everyone like me who loves Indian curries but is not well versed on Indian street food. Every time I come here, I have no idea what I'm ordering but am always pleased with whatever I get. Seriously. It's all delicious and very flavorful. Ambiance is nothing fancy, but it's clean and to the point. I recommend eating in an not ordering to go unless you live pretty close (though I have ordered to go and it was still great. The food is just its very best fresh out). Service is typically quick. But there's limited interaction with a host or server. I'm OK with that but some may not be. It sort of feels like a cafeteria setup. You order from a kiosk and the food is brought to you as it's made. The food is well priced, especially if you're looking for a quick but filling lunch or dinner for multiple people. A $9 thali could easily fill you up or you could share a curry combo with someone. Some of my faves include dahl puri (this dish is chilled/not hot), parotta with curry, potato bhajii, samosa chaat and aloo tikki chaat. Definitely worth a try if you're up for something different.

Eamon C.

Yelp
Have eaten here a few times when I've been in the area. Sometimes the dosa can start falling apart a little, but they are very good. The samosas are regular samosas, decent enough. The upma is regular upma, decent enough. The mango lassi is good. I had dahi vada and uthappam here a while ago, but don't remember what they tasted like.

Yelp
Love. However it's not easy to order. I need more descriptions, more pictures. I am always asking what things are. Make me use more diverse

Yelp
Amazing food!!!!!! I mean truly delicious!! So flavorful. Always very busy. Seems very authentic

Yelp
This place is so unique and the prices are ridiculously great for the amount of delicious food. We placed a large order to sample pretty much the whole menu and we were surprised by how heavy and filling the dishes were. This wasn't the typical curry with a whole lot of rice: rather, the dishes were filled to the brim with vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, puffed rice, and delicious sauces. My favorite dish was the Bombay Chinese Bhel. Very flavorful and addicting. One note: nearly everything was too spicy for me. But I desperately wanted to eat every single bite so I pushed through, lol. I recommend requesting less heat if your palate is sensitive like mine.
google avatar

Demetria M.

Yelp
Chaat has great reviews and I love Indian food so I made the trip over to check out the menu on a Saturday afternoon and they were very busy with call in orders and dine in customers.  I ordered the samosas, poori channa(chick peas), and bhaji(potatoes).  I wasn't a big fan of the samosa but I enjoyed both curries and although I was told the channa wasn't spicy it did still have a kick.  The poori was hot and delicious and each curry came with 2 pieces which was more than enough.  Looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Good food, ok ambiance pav bhaji is very good. Service is self service. Bombay Vada Pav is great

Yelp
Drove 45 min to this place because we wanted to eat chaats. Highlights for me- 1. They have "MASALA PURI"!!!!! Masala Puri is a people's favorite street Chaat in Bangalore and I haven't seen any restaurant serving it so far. The taste was not exactly what I expected but none the less it was nostalgic! Took me back to Bangalore. 10 points for just this. 2. The prices are pretty reasonable. Small portions, affordable rates. I love this concept because it let's you try more dishes on the menu and won't end up eating just one thing because of the heaping quantity. 3. My husband and I tried bhel Puri, masala Puri, dahi batata sev Puri , dabeli, Mysore bonda and custard apple milkshake. Everything we ordered was great except Mysore bonda which is supposed to be fluffy and light but this was too dense. The chutney was definitely not fresh. Either made the previous day or the summer heat made it smell funky. Came from the refrigerator straight. Overall a great place for you Chaat and Dosa cravings. We didn't try Dosa but definitely looked appetizing. Will definitely go back to try.

Yelp
Great food. Fast service. Family ambiance. Went here often for samosas, Channa masala, rice, and badam milk -- first time trying it. Sweetened almond milk. Really good!

Yelp
Chickoo shakes! Count me in. Tasty chaat too. Sadly, they forgot the masala for my dosa.

Yelp
Wow. This place has been on my radar for a while. To give it a try we ordered a few items for takeout last night. I wasn't familiar with any of the dishes (besides the samosas), but that's what makes it so fun. I didn't know what to expect and was more than willing to try. Everything was delicious. I wish we ordered more. We got the south curry of the day (spicey and flavorful), samosas, dabeli. Each dish was so good. In fact, I started writing this review this morning. My phone needed to update so it shut off before I could wrap up. I'm back to my draft and have since ordered pickup from here...yes....again. We were craving more! New favorite spot for sure. I'm pretty sure by now I've made it half way through the menu. Oh and it's deceptively filling too! Hooray for leftovers.

Yelp
I love this place and the food is always great here. However, the ordering system needs work, and the menu is tiny- I have difficulty reading it. But, the food makes up for that inconvenience. I recommend a visit !

W M.

Yelp
Delicious flavorful food! Our family of four went on Mother's Day at 6pm and at 6:30/45 the place was packed! Food is authentic and made to order. They call your name as each dish/item is ready so listen and go into get your food! No frills seating.

Kat R.

Yelp
Tasty food, mostly snack/ street food! We got pani puri and thali, both very good, authentic tasting. The place looks clean, staff is friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I ordered Malabar Parotta with curry & Dosa Masala. Oh my goodness..This is so WOW. Trust me!! Unexpected pleasure!!

Taran D.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service is really quick and the people are very polite. The ambiance is very homely with the background music and the friendly chatter.

Pamela E.

Yelp
This place is great. They have grown from a small take out place to a full sit down restaurant. They serve authentic Indian food, the aromatic spices make the food colorful and delicious. I am often the only American person eating in here but it is often full. If you want to try Indian food come to Chatt N Dosa for a delicious meal. You can take your food to go or eat in. I suggest trying the Thali Platter Take out only - Thali Platter - The Complete meal - South Curry of the day, North Curry of the day, Dal, Veg Fry, Veg. By trying the Thali platter you can identify which foods you prefer, it's a wonderful variety. Also you can just pop in for some Samosas if you're in a rush but want a delicious snack.

Timesh D.

Yelp
Very good Chaat food, definitely satisfied our craving! I would like to go back and try more items.

Yelp
Consistently great tasting food but service and back room (kitchen) execution needs improvement as it felt like they were too slow and overwhelmed with too many guest orders even though the restaurant wasn't full.

Yelp
Delicious street food and awesome customer service... The golguppas and their chaat are the best...

Yelp
Takes two hours to get your food. Needless to say I never got it. Lots of people there but lacks in service

Yelp
Amazing and authentic Indian food! I ordered Masala Dosa, Malabar Parotta with curry, and Rasmalai. I wanted to order the Thali, but they didn't have it that day. So, I asked the gentleman behind the counter for a recommendation and he kindly suggested the masala dosa with some kind of potato side. It was spicy, but so delicious. The malabar parotta with curry was our favorite. Everything was hot, fresh, aromatic and tasted homemade. The portions are plentiful; the food I ordered could've easily fed three moderately hungry people. My boyfriend who doesn't care too much for Indian food rated it an 8/10! I give it a 10/10. I will say don't come here if you are in a rush. I waited about 35 minutes for our food. Oh and the PRICES! The prices are so reasonable! For 2 main dishes and a dessert including tip I paid about $25.

Yelp
I ordered several things via DoorDash. I wasn't impressed. I do love indian food, but I am not vegan. To be fair, I ordered combos and I am not entirely sure which sauce went with which items because they were all packaged seperately. It just had a very odd aftertaste to me a d I don't feel that the spices align with the Indian food I have had in the past, which is vast. Not my jam.
