"Chaconia is a Caribbean take-away restaurant based in the heart of Deptford, London which offers the best in Caribbean cuisine. Our speciality is Roti (as well as other food and drink) from the island of Trinidad & Tobago. All our food is homemade, from fresh ingredients, and from family recipes. We call ourselves the "Roti specialists" and we invite you to come down and find out why!"
"Trini spot Chaconia is low on decorative fuss, but big on being looked after by its matriarch and chef so expect huge bundles of soft, stuffed roti and doorstop slices of macaroni pie. Everything is takeaway or delivery only but that doesn’t stop the richly spiced curry goat from regularly selling out quickly—it’s a cut above and people know it. We think it’s worth collecting from the Deptford kitchen for the freshest roti and a chat with Chaconia’s friendly owner. " - jake missing, rianne shlebak
"Trinidad and Tobago’s flag hangs in Chaconia’s windows—your first indication that roti should be on your order. The indication that you should (try) and get it with richly spiced curry goat will be because it’s sold out. Or, if you’re early, on recommendation from the welcoming owner and chef of this takeaway and delivery-only Trini spot. She’ll also nudge you towards adding tart tamarind sauce, which you should get too. "The Chaconia flower is the national flower of Trinidad & Tobago, chosen as it blooms at the end of August, which is when the nation gained its independence from Britain. This, and a ream of other interesting facts about the island collective, can be learned from Una, the owner of Deptford’s restaurant named of the same flower. As all the roti skins and fillings are made by Una, they have a softer, less oily and industrial texture than other places. It also means that the select choice of fillings — stewed and curried chicken or goat — have more depth of flavour and seasoning to them. The fry bakes are also a joy, to be snapped up whenever they are spotted in the side warmer. A less dense dumpling split with a saltfish boujoul, consisting of intensely flavoured saltfish and vegetables, at only £1.50 these are not to be missed." - Riaz Phillips
