"Acclaimed Indian restaurant Chaiwali has called it quits. Chef Anita Trehan opened the restaurant back in 2015 inside of her home. She was met with local fanfare, even drawing praise from New York Times restaurant critic, Pete Wells. The last day of service is December 12." - Emma Orlow

"Chaiwali, an Indian restaurant located in Harlem, is closing after six years due to decreased foot traffic. The restaurant, opened by chef Anita Trehan in 2015, was praised for its eccentric decor and intensely flavored menu." - Luke Fortney

"Harlem’s Indian restaurant set within a two-story brownstone recently re-opened after an almost two-year renovation. The space at Chaiwali is largely unchanged: There’s plenty of seating both at the bar and at tables spread out over two floors, plus exposed brick walls, dark wood, and antique-looking lamps. The food was a little more hit-and-miss than the first iteration, but there are still some solid options like the pink anari beet bhel, a take on Indian puffed rice street food snack bhel with the addition of pureed beets and pomegranate seeds; and a butter chicken that replaces the typical tomato-based sauce with a carrot based one, making it feel just a tad healthier. This time around, Chaiwali is leaning more heavily into vegetarian options like the tangy achari gobi, a cauliflower dish with pickling spices, and a lush kale burger served with avocado, and fries that have turmeric in the batter." - Eater Staff

Pretty place with great dining. Didn’t know what to expect from some of its fusion Indian food- usually not something I’m interested in. But we were blown away by every dish that came to the table. Butter naan, chicken meatballs. The opening dish the humus and cheese was expertly made. The drink was spicy and to die for. Would absolutely go back

Incredible fresh Indian food with an open atmosphere and outside seating both on the sidewalk and in their garden. Very sensitive to food allergies with many gluten free and vegetarian options. Delicious food! We met the chef Anita who is so kind and thoughtful about the food and love our server Eric who is so sweet and attentive.

Service and covid precautions were absolutely on point!!! Food, on the other hand, could've been better. I ordered their chai, because you know..you have to..the place is called "Chaiwali." It was very underwhelming to be honest. Would I come back, sure if I am in the neighborhood..but wouldn't make a trip just for it..I must say their bread and platter with various spread was amazing..just for that, I changed the review from 3 to 4 stars...

Simply one of the best and unexpected gems in Harlem. Who would’ve thought one would find awesome fusion Indian cuisine this far up on Malcom X? Each dish had enough personal touch from Chef Trehan bettering any Michelin starred offering you get in the lower part of town, but more sophisticated than any normal Indian fare. As a starter we had the Hari Mirch Ricotta (Indian Green Chili Ricotta), which had an unexpected kick much to the delight of my wife who is a fan of spice. The star of the night was the Velvet Carrot Butter chicken - one of the best takes on this dish I’ve had anywhere in the world, including its spiritual hometown of New Delhi. We paired the dish with Naan and a garlic naan, both of which were surprisingly … normal. For dessert we had the Rum Pudding, which is the best piece of Anglo-Indian cuisine I’ve had on this side of the pond. The drinks – the Delhi Gymkhana Martini (served with bits of Gold leaf), and Ah Na Nas – were good, but not to the class of the food. The service was phenomenal, with staff holding the line between attentive while not being pushy. The manager, Natalie, did a great job of making us feel welcome and ensured that we come back for brunch at this awesome establishment. Best of luck to (the awesomely named) Chaiwali!

Outstanding food. Great fusion food with sweet and spicy seasoning. From the appetizer, to the entre and dessert was an experience out of this world. I was dying to try this place. Ambiance is a little on the fancy side for my taste however the staff make you feel right at home. Great mix of crowd from locals to tourist. Definitely a place for a great date.

It was very good...not going to lie I thought that it was not going to be good, we order an appetizer that was eggplant/garlic and more stuff with naa bread and it was really good, and we had lamb chops and black pepper chicken and it was really good, this place is really nice for like a date

Went to this place yesterday with friends. This place serves Indian fusion food but they are not completely justifying the taste and flavor. The salmon we ordered was just fine. The butter chicken meatballs were a disappointment and ruined the whole concept of Butter chicken. But the biggest flop was the naan. I mean how can you serve kulcha by the name of Butter/Garlic naan. That is just not accepted. On the flip side, the kale burger and the mango pudding dessert were absolutely amazing and I would love to try them again. Pros: Ambience Service Cons: Price Flavor
