All the Michelin Bib Gourmands in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mapped

"Chalkboard is a buzzy, casual wine country restaurant located in Healdsburg’s Hotel Les Mars." - Dianne de Guzman, Clair Lorell, Paolo Bicchieri

Chalkboard

"Located in the luxury boutique Hotel Les Mars, Chalkboard is a surprisingly laid-back boîte, with a casual vibe and a buzzing bar that offers a refreshing counterpoint to a day of wine tasting. The dining room’s low vaulted ceilings and marble tables might feel a touch austere if not for the rustic wooden chairs, open kitchen and warm, easygoing service. Sip a little wine as you nosh on sweet, tender pork belly biscuits in the cozy backyard. The menu of small plates spans every cuisine and appetite. Be sure to sample at least one of the homemade pastas: bucatini with pepperoni and Meyer lemon is fresh and delightful. English peas with truffled chevre, mint, potatoes and pickled red onions are a tasty, and visually appealing, celebration of spring." - Michelin Inspector

We recently visited a local restaurant, Chalkboard, that had a great vibe. The atmosphere was lively and fun, but it was a bit too loud for my taste. It could be a good thing if you're with a group of friends, but it might not be ideal for a first date. We ordered a few dishes, including the fried chicken, mushroom pasta, and pork belly bites. Unfortunately, we found the bites to be a bit too “chewy and heavy”, and the other dishes were just lacking in flavor. I was disappointed because I had high expectations based on the restaurant's positive reviews. Overall, the restaurant was still worth checking out.

Great lunch / brunch experience. The outdoor patio is so pleasant and spacious. They have some outdoor heaters and fire pits that makes the place even more comfy. The staff were all very nice with us, I felt really well taken care of. The food was delicious, we had one of the pastas, pretzels, the cheese and charcuterie board and the pumpkin pudding bread. The mezcal cocktail was amazing and a must if you like spicy cocktails. Our pasta was so tasty but all others seemed nice too! Pretzels were really warm which felt quite nice.

Everything on the menu sounded delicious and we were so pleased when our order arrived. Be careful not to over order like we did. We were told they were sharing sizes but they were very generous portions. The pork belly biscuits are a must order!

Google
Excellent service, great wine selection and the food was good, but sadly nothing to write home about. We loved the ambience of the restaurant and the outdoor seating is great on a hot summer day. Unfortunately the food left is wanting more.

Went here for my birthday tonight, was absolutely delicious and quick service. The drinks were amazing as well.

I was in a little bit of a funk, had a couple of hours to kill before a meeting; and decided to stop in to Chalkboard. I spent my evening with Jackson, Kaija, and Yana who totally turned my mood around and I left feeling delighted. Watching Jackson carefully and thoughtfully curate cocktails for customers, Kaijia caring for each guest as they came in and even after, then there’s Yana who puts so much energy into making sure each guest has the best experience possible. I thought to myself during this visit- does the owner know or care about these amazing employees or are they lost individuals in a billionaires business portfolio and I sure hope the later is not the case. Employees like these are priceless and especially because I interviewed each one of them and they care about the owner, company, brand; even more importantly is they care about every customer. Regardless of who you are, this posh property and dinning establishment is what it is- because of its employees like Yana, Jackson, and Kaijia. Thank you for turning my evening into a lovely experience- you truly never know how your sweet souls might just turn someone’s “rough moment in life” into a happy sweet moment. I hope this review brings a smile to your face, touches your hearts, and brightens your day- like you did mine ;)

Yelp
You know shrinkflation be hitting HARD when the portions have gotten so smol, an ant can powerlift the pork belly off the table! More on that later. I've had Chalkboard bookmarked since they opened a decade ago so was excited to finally mark it off my list. However, it seems I missed the boat because the food was incredibly disappointing (mixed recent reviews). Chalkboard is open for dinner nightly and weekend brunch (hours are wrong on yelp). Takeout available. No delivery. Dog-friendly back patio. When I called, I was told owners are encouraged to bring their dogs. =) M E N U New American Fare. It seems the online menu hasn't been updated since last year (items I wanted to try weren't available). Here's the current menu: https://tinyurl.com/3m49ctau D R I N K * Fortaleza Blanco, on the rocks ($18 x2): https://tinyurl.com/5c4k3n55 My go-to drink but I was shocked they're charging $18 for a shot. Nearby restos charge a fraction of the cost; e.g. Lo & Behold ($12) and PizZando ($14). F O O D * Crudo of the Day: Hamachi, apple, radish, shallots, preserved lemon, tobiko ($20): https://tinyurl.com/bdfs9dze The cuts of hamachi ranged from smol to normal. After trying one piece that was fishy, I didn't have another. The slaw was hella sour and sharp tasting...like apple cider vinegar. IMO, the slaw seems more apt to pair with a pork chop not delicate raw fish. * Pork Belly Sliders: Arugula, half sour pickles, sriracha aioli (4 pc - $21): https://tinyurl.com/3jpm2z3k I had initially bookmarked Chalkboard for this... IDK whether to laugh or cry because look how smol the pork belly pieces are. It was literally the size of a lardon that an ant can powerlift. Not the chonky+thicccc cube sized pork belly in other pics (Christina L: https://tinyurl.com/4a2zhkp6 and Minh N: https://tinyurl.com/p63njj6f). Biscuit was good tho - deliciously buttery, moist, and fluffy soft with crunchy golden top. * Lamb Lollipops: Lamb chops, forbidden rice, lamb demi (4 pc - $24): https://tinyurl.com/28sjydas --Requested medium rare Good sear but the lamb chops varied in thickness so the thin cuts were well-done (I ate the smaller ones). The lamb demi was very salty and the forbidden rice had an odd perfume-y aftertaste. * Porcini Gigli: Wild mushrooms, garlic cream, pecorino ($25): https://tinyurl.com/4st5bvbs Loved by yelpers, this was the best dish of the night, tho just tasted ok. Ours looked different than other pics so maybe that's why? The pasta was al-dente but the garlic cream was bland and there way too much shredded pecorino. There was a large, undercooked porcini stem placed on top...did they forget to slice it? * NY Strip Loin: Mashed potatoes, sauce chasseur, mushrooms ($36) --Requested medium rare First fire: Well done - https://tinyurl.com/5n8an7yb Re-fire: Blue to rare but tough and chewy - https://tinyurl.com/42e47xww The entire dish was drenched and sitting in a pool of sauce chasseur/hunter's sauce that legit tasted like balsamic vinegar. Too harsh and overpowering. S E R V I C E Kind FOH staff. Drink + food service was slow for a quiet Monday night (nearly empty). It took 30 minutes just to get my first round of Fortaleza. A M B I A N C E Indoor dining area is fine-casual with rustic touches. Quaint patio with water fountain, well-spaced tables, and sunshades. 80s music jamming in the background. P A R K I N G Easy street parking. Overall, IDK if we visited on a really...really...off night and/or if the BOH was training but the food completely missed the mark. The worst part tho is wasting $200+ (post-tip) and having to go for pizza afterwards.

Yelp
You can always depend on Chalkboard for a very good meal and last night was no exception. Arrived at our reservation time and were promptly seated by the hostess. Chalkboard has a nice varied menu, in the mood for pasta, fish, seafood, meat, no problem they are all covered Pork belly sliders are a favorite starter here, impossible to resist. Delicious as always! For entrees I had the pork chop which was topped with a fruit chutney, onions and carrots. Very tasty but just a touch dry. DW had the roasted halibut, came with wilted greens, asparagus and topped with Hollandaise sauce. Another tasty dish with a bit too much Hollandaise but was easily scrapped off. Also ordered the carrots which were glazed with brown butter and other goodies, these were awesome. Service was excellent, our server had good suggestions and was a joy to talk to. Added bonus, last night (Wednesday) is "locals" night. What does that mean, 10% off your dinner bill and free corkage. A nice savings! As we usually bring wine this was a a nice touch. If you will be in Healdsburg give Chalkboard a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Chalkboard for our last dinner out in 2022! What a way to end the year on a high note! He started with a glass of Armida Zin and the Pumpkin Soup. I had the Chalk Hill 'Estate Red' Bordeaux Blend and French Onion Soup. Both soups were delicious and cozy on a cool, damp night, and mine was surprisingly lighter than expected. Of course there was cheesy goodness, but I appreciated that the broth wasn't overly salty. We then shared the following: -Roasted Beet Salad -Wilted Spinach Salad -Porcini Gigli (a staple house-made pasta on their menu, and a favorite of ours) -Rigatoni with short rib (another standout house-made pasta) -Fried Chicken Everything is awesome! (Do you hear the Lego movie theme song now?!) We loved it all but over-ordered for 2 people! We wrapped up the leftovers and enjoyed round two of this meal at home! We'll be back in 2023 to try more. Note: they're open today/New Years Day for brunch, and the staff mentioned that they hope to offer brunch on a more regular basis this year.

Yelp
Nice meal at Chalkboard, the restaurant in Hotel Les Mars with a Chalk Hill winery connection. Many of Chalkboard's ingredients come from a four-acre organic garden located at Sonoma's Chalk Hill Winery estate. The homemade pasta dishes we had were well-seasoned and delicious. The watermelon salad was light and fresh and included goat cheese foam and the fried tempura ribs (boneless) were sticky, sweet and decadent. The Black Forest cherry dessert was very rich, pudding-like, and generous even for two people. Would recommend, specifically for their homemade pasta. A smooth service experience. Fun eating on the back patio on a warm early fall night.

Yelp
Cozy place off the Healdsburg center with a wooden outdoor warm feel inside. We ordered and shared a few dishes which was plenty between three people. We had a refreshing kale salad, the squash (kind of misto/tempura style), fried chicken and dessert. My favorite was the squash with the parsnip purée on the bottom - such a lovely mix of ingredients. The squash was hearty with a dense texture, which we loved. Our waitress was really good, giving us wine suggestions that paired well with our food.

Yelp
Four of us went to chalkboard for dinner the day before the NYE. The restaurant has been on my list for years since it's opening. I'm so glad we got to go and the experience was phenomenal. Food: 4.5, service 5 We ordered: Crudo of the day with hamachi Beet salad French onion soup Pork belly biscuits Old bay strozzapeti Cod with asparagus Duck confit (not pictured) Porcini Gigli (not pictured) Everything was freshly prepared, beautifully executed and elegantly served. The cod was a tad strong taste due to too much vinegar. We mentioned to the server. He apologized and offered to remake or an alternative with no questions asked. We asked for the remake and it was delicious when it came out. The chef came to the table to make sure the dish was cooked to our satisfaction. What a great service!! Thank you for helping close our 2022 on a high note with such a great memory! We will definitely come back again!

Yelp
For large parties, they always recommend a pre-fixed menu. It was about $80 a person and you make your selections before your arrival. Menu: 1) Small Bites - Cheese and Charcuterie platter, loved the variety for this board. Creamy and salty cheeses with cheese crackers, dried fruit and nuts. 2) Salads - Chalk Hill Estate Greens, the pecorino and the citronette paired well with the greens 3) Pasta - Strozzapreti with Gulf Shrimp, very lemony and fresh, I enjoyed this dish a lot. 4) Seafood - Salmon. Celery root puree was yummy, enjoyed it more than the salmon. 5) Meat - Cabernet Braised Short Rib. Loved the polenta and the flavors on this one. The horseradish was a nice touch. 6) Vegetables - Sugar snap peas, just okay. Asparagus with vinaigrette, skippable. 7) Dessert - Trio of dessert, enjoyed the Panna Cotta more than anything. The coconut ice cream was not bad. The chocolate cake was very rich and dense. For 18 people they brought about 4 plates of each item that we ordered. It was definitely more than enough food and we had so much food leftover. Service: The service was great. We had a large party and the family style was very accommodating. We had about 18 people in our party. We did not expect an automatic 25% gratuity though, so it was quite shocking. I thought usually the standard was 20%, but 25% was a bit steep. Overall, the food was just okay and for the price and gratuity we were paying, didn't feel like it was worth it. Maybe I'd come here again with a smaller party to try other dishes, but for large parties, it just wasn't for me.

Yelp
A belated review from summer: My amazing husband surprised me with a trip to Healdsburg for my birthday. We decided to stay near the hotel for dinner and Chalkboard seemed promising. Unfortunately, it was quite the disappointing experience, especially given it was my special day. First of all, the bar program here is the worst. I asked for a cosmo and received a horribly tasting vinegar drink. When I asked our waitress about it, she explained that the bartender didn't have any cranberry juice (?!?) and used some of his home-made syrup. I am all for custom syrups but that thing tasted nothing like cranberry; more like balsamic vinegar. My tastebuds were distraught and I decided to stick with water. The meal was ok: -Strawberry gazpacho: this is where they could have used some of that home-made syrup as the gazpacho lacked the acidity -Garden Beet salad: the best dish of the night. The beets were very fresh and the toasted pecans added a nice crunch to the creamy cheese texture. -Old bay strozzapreti: I chose this for my dinner entree and was beyond disappointed. Essentially it was dry pasta with poached shrimp. Where is the sauce, the seasoning, the texture?!? I picked out the shrimp and left the rest. -Fries chicken: my husband got this dish and said it was alright. The portion is quite big and he offered to share, but I was pretty much done with this place. -Strawberry sorbet: This complimentary birthday dessert slightly made up for the overall sad experience. The flavors were exceptionally good. One star for the salad and sorbet; one star for our waitress who felt horribly about the experience. It's a pass for me.

Yelp
Great option for a nice dinner in downtown Healdsburg! Since I was in town on a super rainy day, I lucked out and was able to make same day dinner reservations for an early dinner at Chalkboard. They were starting to get busy at 5:30pm on a Saturday, but we were seated right away. I loved how their indoor dining had some socially distanced options, but was still cozy. I ended up trying: -Pork Belly Biscuits (Arugula, Half Sour Pickles, Sriracha Aioli, 4pcs/$21, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=TlfnxGbfZ8vZDdPw8oo0sg&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Good, but I would have preferred if the biscuits were more buttery/flaky. Also, each bite was really small, and it was hard to get the full flavor of the biscuit and pork belly. -Cabernet Braised Short Rib (Polenta, Sautéed Greens, Fresh Horseradish, $30, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rM4liVZGASvK84C54NTHWA&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Yum- this was a really tender and flavor short rib dish. The polenta was also smooth and creamy, and all the ingredients went really well together- recommended! -Seafood Risotto (Diver Scallops, Shrimp, Lemon Caper Relish, $29, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=gRN_Bhj4CYtyR2WXrbjeLQ&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): I'm usually not a big fan of risotto, but tried a couple of bites and it was creamy and well made. However, there was a tiny bit of seafood smell when this dish arrived. Service was great, and our server was friendly and checked in often. I would come back if in the area to give their other dishes a try. Only indoor dining was available since it was winter. Parking was slightly difficult to find since there wasn't a lot of street parking; however, there was an open air parking lot a block away.

Yelp
Came to Chalkboard Restaurant in Healdsburg on the spur of the moment on a Thursday evening. Each of us ordered a glass of wine. Shared a Chalk Hill Estate Green Salad to start. We ordered the Porcini Gigli and the Meyer Lemon Mafaldine and sort of shared our pasta dishes. Both pasta were excellent. We got a dish of the Sauteed Spicey Greens to cut the richness of the pastas. The greens were nothing special. I got the Flourless Chocolate Cake with a scoop of Mocha ice cream, and my dining companion got a solo scoop of Mocha ice cream.

Yelp
Was super excited to visit @chalkboardhealdsberg as I've been meaning to go here for years. Overall, there were some hits (beet salad) and some misses (halibut), but the folks were nice, the vibes were cool and I'm a sucker for a dog friendly patio. Would be willing to give it another shot.
google avatar

Yelp
This was such a nice restaurant we were finally able to try. You have to enter the hotel and turn left to a door that leads you into a bar that opens into a restaurant in the back. It almost seemed like a best-kept secret. We had their chicken sliders for an appetizer, duck, pork chop, and botanical cocktails. I would come back when the weather was maybe warmer to sit on the patio. I would say this is one of the top restaurants in the town of Healdsburg to get a good taste of Sonoma County dining. With all the restaurants to choose from, this would be a great place to try crafted dishes.
google avatar

M M.

Yelp
Went here on recommendation of our tour guide. Well--- it was close to the hotel. However, the waiter could not describe the pasta dish as he never had it. And he mis-described the mushroom pasta dish. And we asked to have all items brought out together (so we could share) , but pal # 4 didn't get her meal until we were done and then we had to ask for hers. I asked for a bullit Manhattan and he said they didn't have bullit anymore but had old Forester. Don't con a girl who knows her KY bourbons. Those are not interchangeable. Thé dessert was good. But I expected more than 3 (one was cheesecake--boring) because they had their own pastry chef. So the selection was disappointing. Also we had to ask for the dessert menu. I'd try a different restaurant next time.

Yelp
Civilized. Refined. Lovely. Loved the beet salad with burrata and strips of fennel. Second course was the strozzapreti with shrimp, greens and a lemon sauce. Fantastic. For those that may not know, strozzapreti are a type of pasta. They look like a slightly longer version of cavatelli. The roasted chicken was served with fresh baby carrots and green beans. The portion was substantial and it was cooked perfectly. It could have used a bit more flavor though. The herbs were great but maybe not enough? We skipped desert but the choices of ice cream and the olive oil cake caught my eye. Service was just so pleasant. Very special place here in Healdsburg. It's part of the Les Mars hotel.

Yelp
We had a great experience at Chalkboard! Enjoyed the heirloom tomato starter, delicious rigatoni and fried chicken. The staff was warm and attentive. Our favorite meal of the weekend. Will plan to return next trip!
google avatar

Yelp
Let's start with the ambience - rustic charm with an open kitchen, great for couples as well as large groups. With Covid, all the tables were fairly spaced apart. While the expansive dining room can fit many guests, I still recommend reservations. Now the food was outstanding: BLT biscuits - buttery biscuits with thick slices of bacon; looked like every table ordered this! Steamed clams - Vietnamese flavors, really unique and savory; even asked for extra bread to sop up the broth Beet salad - for true beet lovers; the beets are so fresh, some even looked like tomatoes or plums, but it's all beets Candy bar in a jar - tastes like Ferrero Rocher in mouse form with a pinch of seasalt; the perfect way to wrap up a great meal Would be more than happy to return for another meal -- got eyes on the fried chicken next!

Yelp
This is a lovely Healdsburg restaurant and great for a romantic dinner. Wine list is extensive but we went with the Peay Pinot noir which is outstanding. They have in-house pastas which are very good, recommend the porcini gigli which has a creamy sauce that is very yummy. We had the seafood risotto which had a lemon flavor that paired wonderfully with the perfectly cooked scallops. With that the braised short ribs that were succulent! Highly recommend this gem. And after dinner, one (or two) can go cuddle in front of the fireplace in the adjacent hotel library room.
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Oh wow, just had the most phenomenal meal here. The edamame salad, the steak sandwich, pork breakfast wrap- the flavors were so balanced and delicious. Meat melted in your mouth, the cheese they used was *chefs kiss*, bloody marys- one of the best I've had. Run here now.
google avatar

Bastiaan G.

Yelp
Three stars and those stars are thanks to the kind and polite waitress. Cocktails were good too even if a bit pricey. Other than that, on basis of price and presentation this restaurant is clearly trying to position itself as upscale but just misses even basic points on food. Case in point, 4 prawns that weren't even deveined and had little seasoning for $20. Fairly simple pastas were so salty that we had to send it back. A rigatoni is a pretty basic dish. The carbonara was all cheese and salt (again). Did not finish. Disappointing as I believe the overall setting and ambiance is not bad. Service was pretty good too. But the dishes need to match their price level and increase in quality and inspiration. I'd be happy to adjust my review once there has been a menu refresh.

Yelp
Really delicious menu and service! Attentive, as well as intimate seating area. The menu was great for trying new things as well as elevated comfort food. Don't skip the onion dip!
google avatar

Nu-Beer P.

Yelp
The restaurant's convenient location connecting with the hotel offers a nice indoor and outdoor space. The food is great, with fresh and delicious options, and the cocktails are also enjoyable. The service might be a bit slow, but it doesn't overshadow the overall enjoyable dinner experience.
google avatar

Digvijay S.

Yelp
Tapas style which is a perfect way to enjoy different types of dishes. Great selection of wines and cocktails. The short rib was cooked to perfection and the squash as well as the garlic added a rich falvor to it. Salmon was delicious with the right amount of seasoning and was very tender. The pasta, Porcini Gigli, was hands down my favorite. The pasta was cooked al dente with wild mushrooms which were really tasty topped with garlic cream sauce. The sauce added a great touch with unique flavors. Highly recommend it. Excellent service. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Mel I.

Yelp
The restaurant ambiance and service was pleasant. However, the menu was very limited. When my plate was served to me, It reminded me of a mac & cheese pasta dish with some added greens & few pieces of shrimp. Unfortunately, if you're visiting Healdsburg and looking for a place to eat. I would look elsewhere. The food was overpriced and underwhelming.

Yelp
Chalkboard didn't change for the better. The service was slow for a half full restaurant and it took 2 hours for this disappointing meal. To steal from another review "The third time wasn't the charm". First of all, The Candy Bar should be a permanent fixture on the menu! My Mother & I couldn't find something to try from every course so this is what we ordered from the summer 2023 menu. For the First course we ordered the Grilled Feta minus the Baba Ghanoush, this was good but expected it to be served warm. Skipped to the Third Course and got the best dish of the night Porcini Gigli; pasta and mushroom cream sauce done right. Then it went downhill from here. For the Fourth Course it was a small piece of Poached Halibut which was bland with salty basil preserve. Also on the plate were too many crushed almonds accompanied by 5 asparagus with way too little hollandaise sauce. We should of stopped there but ordered dessert. The birthday scoop of lavender ice cream tasted like creamy flowers which my mother ate because her dessert of Honey Brie Trifle was not a good mix of flavors. Then there's my choice of chocolate custard. The custard had good dark chocolate flavor but was too thick along with flavorless popcorn dust and the best part three small pieces of honeycomb toffee. Sorry to say that we won't be returning to what was one of our favorite restaurants.

Yelp
Great food - innovative farm to table, seasonal. A lot of fermentation. Creative and fresh.

Yelp
Hitch up your arteries and head out to Chalkboard for some delicious rib sticking food. This is comfort food for the well-to-do, as the prices match the cholesterol. The wine list is a little heavy on Foley wines, but the cocktails are still solid. The large beautiful space is segmented into smallish rooms, so even when the place is full it doesn't feel crowded. Service was professional, if a bit distant.

Yelp
Gorgeous, intimate restaurant, nice service, and decent dishes. Amuse bouche - Since it was my SO's birthday, they brought out a small bite only for him. It was creamy. Roasted Brussel Sprouts - Crispy, strong balsamic taste, and challenging to finish. Old Bay Strozzapreti (gulf shrimp, garlic, preserved lemon, greens) - Must order. It was savory, creamy, and fun to eat. Brick Hen (seared game hen, red wine sauce, bacon, heirloom baby carrots, whipped potato) - Pass. I've had this dish many times elsewhere and it felt like one large plant of salted sauce. Huckleberry Bread Pudding - Must order! The sweet, rich pudding and the ice cream combination was a match made in heaven.

Yelp
This place is very nice. The food is high quality. The pasta portions are small, but great if you're trying not to eat too much. Because it's so good you'd eat every bite they give you. We had a nice bottle of white wine an artichoke dip appt and two pasta dishes. I'm taking away two stars because the server was clearly having a bad night. She said virtually nothing to us or checked in and was snappy and rude when we asked any questions. Took about 20 minutes with empty plates to get the bill and then she brought us someone else's bill and was rude about that too as if it was our fault. I feel bad for her. It made a nice special night out a lot less enjoyable for us.

Yelp
I meeeean... DAAAAYUM!!! This place is exceptional. Period. The food, the service, the ambience... just everything! And now I'm salivating and dreaming about coming back here again... ugh! So. GOOD. People always wonder why I spend so much time in Healdsburg. I tell 'em: I love my wine and I love my FOOD! And this little town rarely ever disappoints when it comes to both. Chalkboard is an excellent example of this! They completely slayed that hell out of our dining experience a few months ago, and they did it as safely as possible (cue in COVID). I was so hurt when I learned that their sister restaurant the Brass Rabbit closed down. But, I'm so happy that I was able to try this amazing place. Had dinner here during the late summer with a few friends, and we had an absolute BLAST! This was the perfect ending to our wine filled day. So first off, can we talk about how stinkin' CUTE this restaurant is? Their patio is so damn adorbs!!! Super comfy, chic, and they have string lights and fire pits in the back. They've got an inside and outside bar that are both gorgeous! Even their restrooms are gorgeous. Like damn! Love it, love it! I was so shocked to see that there were barely any people dining on their patio. This was perfect for us, but I know that it must have been hard for them. But you know... COVID :/. We brought our own bottle of sparkling wine to have with dinner, and they waived the corkage fee for us! So gracious of them. We ended up ordering several appetizers and our entrees, and just about everything was delicious! We ordered the following: *Vegetable burrata - Only tried a tiny bit of this since my friends basically devoured it when it came to table (I was in the restroom). Nice flavors for a veggie dish but I would have liked more cheese. We specifically ordered this for our vegetarian friend, but I would stick to the other apps next time. *Buttermilk fried chicken thighs - FANTASTIC!!! These were boneless and the meat was super tender. The seasoning was light but perfect and the skin was nice and crispy. Definitely a favorite at the table. It was delicious. *Pork belly biscuit sliders - Phenomenal! The best app that we ordered out of them all. For someone who's never really been a huge fan of pork belly, I have to say that this tasted so incredible. The outside had this wonderful grilled and crispy texture to it while the inside was literally melting in my mouth. What usually puts me off about pork belly is that it's super fatty, but these sliders were actually more lean. The biscuits were a nice touch but they didn't need them at all. *Estero Gold Bucatini - Sensational! Ultra creamy and super fragrant. It was radiating with delicious flavors. Loved how cheesy this was. This was my entree and the best one at the table in my opinion. *Old Bay Strozzapreti - So yummy! Both the shrimp and pasta were so tasty in this dish. Not much sauce but the seasoning was just right. Perfect for someone who doesn't like super saucy pastas. *Cocao Trifoglio - Did not try this but my friend was raving about it and it smelled incredible. *Blackberry margarita donuts - The only item that I genuinely didn't like, but my friend ended up getting these for herself anyways. I did try them and they basically tasted like hot tequila. I wasn't a fan and wouldn't order these again. We actually had two young ladies serving us that evening and both of them were amazing! Didn't get their names, but the service was absolutely stellar from start to finish! This place is also totally COVID compliant which was so refreshing to experience. We really enjoyed our time here! I bet this place was booming before COVID hit. Would also love to come back to try out some of their cocktails in the future. Definitely a Healdsburg gem and an excellent spot for dinner when in downtown.

Yelp
After dining at destination restaurant Single Thread the night before we ended up here for brunch and this menu also impressed! Tried the heirloom polenta bowl with spinach and egg (love a good savory breakfast bowl!), Bahn mi sandwich with fries and the cucumber gazpacho - all delicious and beautifully presented! I also asked for something spicy and they brought me a wonderfully different homemade chili salt that the chef created. I will gladly return when in this area. They don't have their brunch menu posted on their website for some reason, so, including the summer 2022 brunch menu in my review.

Yelp
We were looking forward to a great meal at Chalkboard, but we were sorely disappointed. We sat outside, the ambiance was beautiful. The wait staff was completely disinterested in being there and it was blatantly obvious. I started with a cocktail - a cherry French 75 that was slightly above sipping Robitussin DM. We ordered the bread service, cheese board and the calamari. Bread was, well, bread - nothing to write home about. The cheeseboard arrived, but unfortunately no one on staff could (or wanted to) identify the various cheeses and condiments - so we opted to be surprised at every bite. The calamari/pork belly situation was interesting, not something I'd order again. Since we were already seeing the writing on the wall, we chose "safe" entrees. How badly can you screw up pasta? Well, pretty badly. The pork & veal rigatoni was bland at best and the mushroom pasta had the look, smell and feel of something that may have been left in the fridge for a little too long. It was awful and barely touched. Unfortunately, our waitress couldn't be bothered to ask if we wanted it boxed (we didn't) or if there was an issue. Same with my cocktail, I left the majority of it, but no one cared. Perhaps if the staff had been slightly more involved in our dining experience, we would have left Chalkboard slightly happier, but this is not a place I would return to and am perplexed at the numerous 5-star reviews.

Yelp
Food was great. Calamari was absolutely spectacular. Service was dialed. Ordered the cheeseboard, an app (see above) and the lobster linguini. Why not 5 stars? There was a baby (an actual baby) at the bar. Not for a minute....for an hour. The parents kept lifting it and smelling the diaper. I was dying and holding back my laughter because as a father of 4 (I get it) but this would NEVER EVER EVER happen in my hometown of Seattle. Not sure if it's the culture here, but there are still State laws and no one knew how to handle these young parents. I'm actually going to "up" the rating to 4 stars because my wife was cracking so many jokes it made the dinner so entertaining. The baby disappeared at one point and I swear it was making a Negroni for other customers.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced!! We waited at our table for 15 minutes before I reminded the kitchen workers we were there, then the waiter realized we were there. Food was below average. I got the short rib dinner because the waiter said it was one of the best things on the menu. It wasn't very good at all. My mom got the steak and it was average. Beet salad was good. Ambiance was nice that was my favorite part of the visit.

Yelp
We didn't have a booking, but the hostess very graciously accommodated us inside the restaurant. Their outside seating was fully booked but we got a very nice table next to the windows. We ordered boulevardier for drinks and pork chop, Strozzaperetti with shrimp and roasted chicken. All the items tasted super delicious and our drinks were great too. Excellent service, good food and we felt very happy and relaxed at the end of the evening. Since we reached late we couldn't order the Crudo of the day and the fried Chicken. Hopefully on our next visit.

Yelp
Salad was a nice portion, pork chop entree was on the smaller side and was served a bit undercooked for my liking. Sent it back and second serving was practical burnt. Restaurant was beautiful, but meal felt a bit rushed overall. Wasn't my favorite meal in Healdsburg.

Yelp
4.5. Food was great. Hostess was fast. Our server was busy and didn't get to us for awhile. The food from the kitchen got to us ASAP. We knew that because we were sat right in front of the kitchen. We had the pork belly biscuits, the chalk hill greens, porcini gigli, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, seafood risotto and each had a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink. Total came to $194. Plenty of food. Very fulfilling.

Yelp
Had decent expectations for this place but they were definitely exceeded. Great menu items with unique flair. Wonderful, kind and attentive service. We'll be back!

Yelp
Nestled in the picturesque town of Healdsburg, a culinary gem awaited our arrival - Chalkboard, a restaurant known for its innovative and adventurous approach to dining. As we stepped into the cozy yet elegant ambiance, we were eager to sample the talk of the town - the Table Burger, the latest fad that had been creating waves in the foodie community. Seated comfortably at our table, I eagerly anticipated the arrival of this highly anticipated creation. And boy, did it make an entrance! Presented with small wooden picks the Table Burger stood tall, an architectural marvel that demanded admiration from the four of us. Your taste buds and your true buds will thank you, and you'll leave with a newfound appreciation for the artistry that can be found within the confines of the humble Table Burger.

Yelp
As part of a sweepstakes I had won, it included dinner for 2 here. Which is located in the hotel we stayed at, Hotel Le Mars. The restaurant isn't huge, but it's just the right size to keep people busy all the while hearing your own conversation. Located in our hotel, I didn't think it would be this nice! It has the aura of a big, stand alone restaurant in a big city. It was cozy, very comfortable atmosphere and delicious food! The service was amazing as people were always moving with drinks, entrees and desserts! Which we did have all of them! The steak we tender, very well cooked and loads of flavor! Very good menu! The entrees weren't so big that you didn't have room for desserts. I had room for dessert! Yeah, they got me! If you don't really look for the restaurant, you might miss it. Very much recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
The cutest and most wonderful place in Healdsburg (and you must must must get the crudo of the day). It's hard for me to visit this area and not eat at Chalboard, and it's harder to not order one of everything on the menu. I've been several times and have never once had a bad experience, bad bite of food, or bad service. The last time my husband and I tried to get in without a reservation (do not recommend), so we had to eat at the bar instead, and the bartender was probably one of the nicest customer service experiences I've ever had in 30+ years. Do yourself a favor and run, do not walk here, and after you order the crudo, order every single pasta and dessert on the menu. You're welcome.

Yelp
Located next to a hotel with a nice long bar in the front with indoor and outdoor seatings. We sat in the patio with shaded areas. Ambience was very relaxing and pleasant with attentive services. Started with the peach melon chilled shot of soup - peach and melon infused, very crisp clear savory yet a hint of mint oil and basil that opens up the palate. Good starter. The pork belly biscuits were tiny, one bite. The biscuit is buttery and the pork has a perfect sweet note, great crunch with the slaw pickles. The crudo (hamachi fish) raw, very fresh with basil seed, and cucumber give extra texture. Love the gulf shrimp pasta, it was proportionally balanced with smooth creamy white sauce. Good to visit.

Yelp
Definitely worth a second visit! The menu changes daily. Food was definitely fresh and exciting! We started with the crudo of the day and the pork belly sliders. Both were excellent. I had the fried chicken which was interesting and unique. Very tender, I'm assuming that it was brined and the batter was slightly sour, not in a bad way. Maybe it was the buttermilk. My husband had the short rib with polenta which was very good. We shared a creme brulee for dessert. All in all a really wonderful meal! I had the Pie Hard cocktail which was very good!

Yelp
Chalkboard used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I recently had to move to SoCal, but when I come to town for a visit, I make going to Chalkboard a priority. It was a slow Tuesday when I went in. The place was practically empty and I still had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated. The waitress put water on our table and didn't bother to pour water into my glass. I feel like the first glass should be filled by the waitress before she walks away. For my appetizer, I got the cheese board. The waitress brought the cheese board to my table and explained how one of the cheeses on the board was "gross" and said that most of cheese was not to be eaten. Everything on my plate should be edible. The portion size for the cheese plate was also surprisingly small for the price. I also got the duck rillette. It was overly salty and didn't even taste like duck. My husband got the lobster pasta dish for his entree. The lobster was overcooked, was served cold and the whole thing had no flavor. I got the pork belly pasta entree. It was over salted and the pork belly was super dry. I took two bites and was done! It truly saddens me that this place isn't what it used to be. I won't be going back.

Yelp
One of the worst experiences we've had out. Service was absolutely horrendous. We were seated promptly and that's about it. Took 20 minutes to take our order. Never saw our server again. (Not an exaggeration) Food runners brought half our food after about 60 minutes. We canceled the other two entrees, and then they arrived when we were waiting for the check after being seated an hour and fifteen minutes minutes. Management made it as right as she could by discounting the check and apologizing profusely. I'll never go back.

Yelp
Chalkboard recently hosted my sister's 50th birthday dinner for a party of 20. Annette and the Chalkboard staff were so incredibly helpful from the early planning stages until the end of the celebration evening. The entire party thoroughly enjoyed the evening! The evening began with wine, cocktails, charcuterie and appetizers in the foyer and library. From there we were escorted to the enchanting back patio where we had an incredible dining experience at a beautifully decorated long table. We enjoyed several dishes and wine parings. Afterwards, we had desserts and birthday cake (from Costeaux's) in the library. The evening went off without a hitch! Thank you again for a fantastic experience!!

Yelp
Farm to table restaurant. The menu changes often and is based on what is available from their farm. Service was great. The ambiance is nice - it is part a charming hotel, as well. The lasagna and rigatoni were delicious.

Yelp
My wife and two friends went to this restaurant on the recommendation of our hotel concierge and we are so thankful that we did. This is one of the best restaurants that we had ever been to. Their menu is not large but I think it allows them to produce an amazing experience each night. They generally have small plates so if you are good with sharing, your experience will be amazing. We have short ribs, seafood/scallop risotto, crispy duck and a wonderful pasta - all of which were some of the best we had ever had. However, the best part of the evening was the incredibly friendly waitstaff. Not only was our waiter amazing, when we were having difficulty picking out a wine, we had the most knowledgeable staff member help us pick a great Meeker Cabernet Franc. When we asked her if she was a sommelier (hard to not run into them in the valley) but rather just a staff member that loved to help out. She should probably sit for her certificate as she was amazing. Overall, one of our top restaurant experiences in the last few years. Their Michelin star will be arriving shortly.

Yelp
I still think this is a great restaurant despite a bad experience last night. Ordered the coq au vin and got a fairly dry piece of chicken leg. Looked glacéd without any sauce. My experience is that the chicken falls off the bone after being cooked in the vine sauce but not in this version. I had asked for a substitute for the mashed potatoes and was offered greens. The greens ended up being cold raw green cabbage. The chicken leg lay on top of it. Not so good! They didn't make me pay but I left hungry.
