From the second that you walk through those beautiful HUGE wooden doors, you will realize that you are entering a quiet, cozy little oasis in the city. There's an inviting little lounge area (with nifty modern fireplace and seating hearth that camouflages the elevator bank) in the lobby. The staff is welcoming and professional beyond belief.
The art throughout the hotel is well-chosen and interesting. The hotel has a modern decor and the art manages to enhance the atmosphere without totally overwhelming it. Many (perhaps all?) of the floors have murals along the common hallways. There is a social/bar area (also functions as the breakfast room in the mornings) on the second floor that is stocked with an ingeniously-designed bookshelf/lectern (that also functions as the railing to look down onto the lobby,) stocked with a wide variety of beautiful art books.
Very well-appointed and delicious breakfast buffet, including fabulous bagels from Balthazar (yes, I asked; they were THAT good!) If you're looking for more than coffee, freshly-squeezed juice, and pastry, there is a wonderful breakfast menu you can order from that has things like waffles with bourbon maple syrup and variations of Eggs Benedict.
I think that they must have done some renovating since some of the previous reviews were written, because I didn't notice things looking particularly worn and there was an alarm clock provided in the room.
Amazing attention to detail and thoughtful hospitality at this place, from a large roll of paper that functions as a clever desk pad to a mini-bar (basket, really) that includes condoms (!) along with the snacks and drinks, there is no need that the staff hasn't thought of.
The very best, however, was the shower. I'm thinking that, in this age of water conservation and green-ness, that this luxuriant shower just CAN'T be legal. Seriously, the best shower I've ever experience in my life: very powerful downpour, like showering in a waterfall, with plenty of hot water. Absolutely no water pressure issues at this place! I did NOT want to get out of that shower!
My only criticism, and it's minute, is that the metal-pulley reading lamp definitely favors form over function. A good idea, in theory, but, in practice, when you actually try to adjust it, it wobbles off the pulley track and really won't go up or down very far. The Chambers would be well-advised to invest in some new ones; these seem cheap and like something made in someone's garage, so they detract (only a little) from the (otherwise perfect) experience.
