The 25 Best Restaurants In Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Champa Garden is located on a residential corner in East Oakland’s Ivy Hill and is the spot for Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese specialties that are bright, flavorful, and just really damn good. The best move is coming here with people you like, and kicking off this casual lunch or dinner with the Champa Sampler (a name we’d get tattooed on our left rib). It’s served on a plate shaped like a boat, and shows off the restaurant’s greatest hits—Lao sausages, fried rice ball salad, crispy spring rolls, and lettuce wraps." - lani conway, julia chen 1

Thai and Lao Restaurants Open for Takeout and Delivery in the Bay Area | Eater SF

"One of the first East Bay restaurants to really popularize Lao food for a mainstream audience, Champa Garden is probably best known for its sampler platter, which features a trio of classics: crispy rice ball salad, fermented Lao sausages, and fried egg rolls. On a chilly night, the funky Lue-style noodle soup will warm you up. You can get all of the Thai takeout standards here as well. Call in for pickup or order delivery via Grubhub or Seamless. Champa’s SF location, out by Ocean Avenue, is also open." - Luke Tsai

I used to frequent this place when I lived in the Bay Area, so when I have the chance to go back, I took my friends here. We waited over 40 min for 3 people on a Friday night. Unfortunately, most of our dishes fell flat - it was on the bland side and nothing spectacular. Even the sampler dish was just ok - nam kaow rice was not crispy enough nor was it well seasoned. The only dish we enjoyed was the wonton soup , which is the most flavorful. For comparison, Night and Song market in LA, or Sticky Rice Lao street food in Orlando, FL, blows this place out of the water. It definitely does not deserve the recognition it deserves. Or perhaps its quality has changed since I visited over 10 years ago. However, we did randomly run into an old friend we haven’t seen in 25 years here, so that was super cool.

Was looking for a comforting meal around ~20 drive from Berkeley and didn’t want to spend more than $20. This homey neighborhood spot fit the bill exactly! Service was very friendly and fast. Food was delicious and well priced. The side of rice was perfectly portioned. Also had a nice array of sauces and condiments for those who like a little spice. Was delighted to see tamarind mix and pickled Serranos! We got the yellow curry and the pad see ew as well as the calamari. I would recommend eating the calamari first because it’s not as good when it’s cold. Also I got an empty calamari but it was prob a mistake. My one complaint was the soy sauce; I have a sneaking suspicion it was watered down, but then again my taste buds are particularly attuned to soy sauce quality.

Google
Pad Thai was pretty good, and big portion. Green curry was excellent. Thai iced tea also good, and they even put less ice when asked. Mango sticky rice just okay. Rice was a little dense, but coconut sauce is flavorful, and mangoes were rice. Friendly service

Nestled in a highly residential neighborhood in Oakland, Champa Garden is a great local spot with friendly service, great food, and reasonable prices. The place has very homey decor and vibes, and the staff is very attentive and good at making you feel at home. Each of the items we ordered was great. The iced tea was among the most flavorful I’ve had. The basil fried rice is a staple. The spring rolls are fun to wrap and eat. The fish was brilliantly seasoned. Can’t wait to go back!

When I moved here in 2017, this place was touted as "bomb" to me. I excitedly became a patron (I used to live walking distance to here). However, after dining here after being not coming here since the pandemic, the food quality and service fell off a lot. I don't know if it has the same owners or what, but it's not the Champa I remember pre-pandemic. There are better Thai/Lao options in the east Bay.

I love to take out of town visitors to Champa Garden. A trip here is a trip off the beaten path, away from the trendy parts of town, a trip to East Oakland, out of a lot of people's comfort zones. What kind of cuisine is it?? Is it Thai? Is it Lao? Is it Tai Lue? It's all of the above -- a cultural hodgepodge, hard to pigeonhole like the City itself. To further extend the metaphor, like Oakland, the flavors of Champa Garden are funky & fresh! The tables are covered in condiments inviting you to further customize these mashed up dishes. I haven't had anything I didn't like here. But don't miss the rice ball salad, or the Lao sausage. My son swears by their fried rice. Come take a trip to the avenues, be patient if you arrive at 7pm, over order (it's not expensive), and bring a few friends.

Google
Staff were kind and very happy to explain everything on the menu. Pad Thai was a bit too sweet for my liking, but the salads, platter, and curry was nice! Thai tea was authentic and well-spiced, although not for those who don't have a sweet tooth. Our company also recommended the mango sticky rice!

Google
The family that runs this neighborhood gem are so warm and welcoming, and their food is so fresh and solid and obviously made and served with pride. Really local vibe like many of their customers walked here from home. Old folks, families, teens on a date, and everyone in between. Not trying to be fancy, but quality above expectations and very reasonable. Everything's good here.

Yelp
Our party of 6 had no problem getting seating here. The waiting staff were very hospitable and our server successfully remembered our order of 9 items without writing it down. Khao Piak - 5 - the noodles were chewy and soft. Thick on the starchy side in a good way. Larp - 5 - Fresh appetizer. It pairs well when you wrap it in the provided lettuce with some sticky rice. Lao Papaya salad - 2 - It was strong on the fish and the papaya felt on the more soggy side. Overall not my cup of tea. Champa Sampler - 5 - the fried rolls were crunchy. As was the nam khao. I also enjoyed the sausage. Duck curry with eggplant - 4.5 - it has regular thai flavor to it and was solid. Chicken Satay - 4 - We enjoyed this as well, but nothing special to write home about. Basil Fried Rice - 5 - I liked it.

Yelp
I get my cravings for pad thai once in a while, and decided to check out Champa Garden when I saw they had duck as a protein option! Definitely don't see that often. The pad thai starts at $12.50 if you go for the classic protein options like chicken or beef, which is very affordable for a sit down meal these days. The duck, however, is a $5 add on. Considering how much of an increase it is compared to chicken here, I had much higher expectations. It wasn't abundantly loaded with meat or anything, and a lot of the pieces were more fat than meat. I definitely don't think it was worth $5 for the upgrade. The noodles itself also seemed more on the soft and overcooked side, and a bit too saucy. Wasn't my ideal texture. I also tried the Angel Wings ($13) since it seemed to be one of their popular specialty items. I personally just didn't think stuffed fried chicken is my thing. The outer crisp was great though! I'll probably just stick to classic chicken wings in the future. Overall, if you live in the area, this is a pretty decent spot for a casual budget friendly meal if you stick to the basics.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Oakland with flavorful, fast and affordable food! The portions are large and the food is very tasty. The appetizer with the sausage and fried onions with a dipping sauce was so delicious and I highly recommend ordering! What I love about the appetizers is that it includes fresh veggies and herbs especially the lettuce wraps. The freshness really cuts the heaviness of the meat. The catfish curry was sweet and savory! Nice fried pieces of catfish with veggies. The pad see ew was typical and something you can get anywhere so I recommend getting the specialty dishes! Definitely will be coming back for some Asian comfort food at a good price!

Yelp
Interesting experience.. other restaurants have Angel Wings but it's like this fried chicken covered in this sweet, sticky sauce. The Angel Wings here are stuffed chicken wings.. what is the truth?! Unfortunately, I do prefer the former over the latter. It wasn't bad by any means; I just love more protein. I did enjoy their pla panang, crispy catfish with panang curry. Should've spent a bit more for rice but I was a bit too cheap.

Yelp
Champa Garden is one of those neighborhood gems you end up craving weekly. Tucked away in East Oakland, it's a cozy spot serving up seriously delicious Lao, Thai, and Cambodian dishes. My friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon and was luckly seated right away. As we started to order was when it started to get packed. We ordered the Champa Sampler to share for the both of us. Do not skip on this dish. It's the perfect intro to their Lao-Thai dishes. We also ordered the Lao's Noodle Soup and I would highly recommend it! The staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the vibe is super casual which is great for both a quick lunch or a laid-back dinner with friends. They also do takeout really well if you're not in the mood to dine in. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the food hits every time. Highly recommend if you're looking to explore Southeast Asian cuisine or just want a consistently great meal.

Yelp
Prices are unbeatable! Service is quick and friendly. Location is in a neighborhood so parking is limited and a little tough depending on time you go. Ambiance is dim but there are plenty of tables. I ordered the nam kao, basil fried rice with pork and noodle soup. All the food was flavorful and delicious. Highly recommend this cozy little spot for Cambodian Lao food.

Yelp
I always like their food. Tried dining in yesterday but saw a posting saying Health Department shut them down. Does anyone know more about this?

Yelp
A local favorite with all your fav Lao/Thai dishes on the menu. If you've never been, highly recommend the Champa Sampler. It's a great solo dish, or appetizer to share, since you get some imperial rolls, lao sausage and nam khao. I love the dipping sauce that comes with this too. They serve it all with some lettuce/herbs, perfect to wrap and dip! Another fav of mine are the angel wings. These are whole wings, deboned, and stuffed with egg roll filling. Served with a sweet chili sauce, it's another yummy snack/app/entree to a main dish. A lot of people come for their noodle soups, like kasoy, kao piak, etc. The soups are flavorful and rich, super hearty, and served in giant bowls. TBH I think they give you waaaaaayyy more soup to noodle ratio but the flavor is there, so they get a pass. Spice rack on every table, so you can sauce up your food which ever way you want. Champa is an Oakland gem, and a must visit if you're ever craving some Lao/Thai food.

Yelp
SO GOOD!! We ordered takeout right before closing and they still accommodated us, which we really appreciated. Everything we got was delicious. Angel Wings (10/10): My absolute favorite! Super tender and packed with what tastes like spring roll filling -- so flavorful and perfectly cooked. Champa Sampler (9/10): Comes with veggies for wrapping, which was a nice touch. The sausage was just okay, but the vinegar dipping sauce that comes with it was amazing. Basil Fried Rice (9/10): Perfectly balanced spice level -- not too overwhelming, but enough to keep it interesting. Pad Mah Kuer (10/10): A spicy eggplant dish with a smoky flavor that lingers -- seriously addictive. Since we only got takeout, I can't comment much on dining in, but the place looks like a legit, cozy Asian restaurant -- not too big, but packed with flavor. Also, bonus points: they're generous with their sauces! Def an Oakland gem and would recommend to check out!

Yelp
I have visited this east Oakland Thai restaurant a few times before. It's in a neighborhood surrounded primarily homes except for a liquor store across the corner. Feels very homey. I had ordered the Pad See We with Thai Iced Tea. The food came out in short order. The pad see ew was a bit sparse in my opinion with chucks of broccoli, need to doctored up with chili sauce to brighten the taste. Thai ice tea was sweet. I guess I should be more adventurous in my selection. Overall, I was filled and in future visit I will try a different dish

Yelp
Came on a lazy Saturday around 11:30, first time I've been there when it wasn't packed! Restaurant is on the smaller size, so it's nice to have the dimly lit vibes match a quieter space. As always food is hella on point. Nam Kaow is a must, & the Pork Thai Larp pairs really well. We always mix up some fish sauce with the jalapeños & dry pepper to add a nice & kickin sauce to em! First time having the Pla Gra Prow & it was pretty good. Green beans & peppers were crunchy & the sauce was smackin. Do wish there was a lil more catfish tho. Beef Pumpkin Curry was so good, the homegirl was about to drink it from a straw! Chicken Pad Thai is probably the weakest link here. Solid, but doesn't compare to the heavy hitting flavors of the other dishes. If you haven't been, you're missing out. If you already know wassup, then keep on!

Yelp
Best Laotian food in the bay! Mom and pop shop so you know it's authentic! Everything was fresh and flavorful. Super friendly staff. We got the champa sampler but we should've gotten 2 lol. So good. The pad Thai was perfect! Dont forget to double Up on the protein.

Yelp
My go to dishes here are the Angel Wings (stuffed chicken wings) and Crispy Pork Belly. They never disappoint. However, I tried some new items this past visit. The Lao Sausages ended up being all fat/no pork, and the Fried Spring Rolls ended up being filled with 98% glass noodles and a microscopic amount of pork (see uploaded pic). There's a Viet spot in SF I've been to where the fried Spring Rolls are filled with 98% meat. These two places should collaborate to make the perfectly balanced fried spring rolls.

Megan N.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this neighborhood hidden gem since I moved to the area and I'm so glad I finally did! The staff were very kind, friendly and provided great service. They give "everyone is family" vibes and I felt warmly welcomed. We got lychee sake cocktails, basil fried rice, panang curry, and pad see ew. The pad see ew was PERFECT and exactly how I like it. I cannot express how much I adored the staff and highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. I'm also very excited to have a place nearby that makes DELICIOUS lychee cocktails (my favorite). This will be my go to place for Thai food now.

Yelp
Champa Garden is certainly a place you hear about by word of mouth by Bay Area locals both for how tasty it is and its affordability. Came here on a weekday afternoon for lunch and there was plenty of seating. The menu is pretty large so there's a lot of options to satisfy your palate for whatever Thai or Lao dish you're feeling like. For 2 people we shared a Pad Thai and Duck Curry and it was definitely a bit more than enough food. Both dishes were rich and flavorful--the Duck Curry had a classic flavor to it with pieces of duck and lots of veggies. I actually don't even like Pad Thai usually, but this Pad Thai was great--it wasn't overly sweet like some tend to make it and it had the right amount of tang and balance to it to make you want to keep eating it. Sidebar: I actually really appreciate that the bean sprouts were on the side for the Pad Thai because I'm a little bean-sprout intolerant (yes, I know I need to grow up) but you may want to consider asking about it if you want it incorporated. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive! Parking was doable although for a weekday afternoon there was a good amount of cars in the residential area taking up spots. Highly recommend to try this place when you're in the area!

Yelp
We went on Saturday Night around 8pm and it was packed. We put our name on the list and waited about 15 minutes till a party leaf and we were seated. The dining room is small and holds around 10 tables, give or take a few. We ordered the appetizer sampler and the stir-fried egg plant. We could have just got the sampler. It was huge and enough food for 2 meals. We ate all of our leftovers for lunch the next day. The sampler comes with a crispy rice, sausage, egg rolls with glass noodles inside, a peanut sauce and lettuce, basil, mint and other greens to wrap everything in. My favorite was the crispy rice. It was so tasty and the texture was great and it worked great rolled up in the lettuce. If you finish your greens they are happy to give you a refill. I saw another table getting a refill. They have a table that can easily fit 6 people, or it's 2 tables put together, either way the large group was happy to wait for that table than trying to squeeze into a table for 4. Parking is tight. The restaurant is located in the middle of a neighborhood and parking is street parking. We were super lucky and got a space right in front. Good thing we have a tiny car. They do have a spot set aside for pick up only. That was good to see as they had the same amount or even more take out orders while we were there. There was a steady stream of people picking up their order and delivery services picking orders for others. When we go back I'd just stick with one dish. I would order the appetizer sampler as the whole dinner. It was very tasty and fun new dish. I looked around and it seems like most tables got the appetizer sampler.

Yelp
Food: 10/10 the fried wrapped chicken spring rolls were my favorite and is a must try. There's also a tofu option if you're vegetarian. Dessert we had fried banana with a side of vanilla ice cream and that was also amazing. Between this and the mango sticky rice I liked this more (and I normally love mango sticky rice) but I'd suggest their fried banana dessert! Service: very quick, attentive, and friendly. Ambiance: casual family restaurant on the corner of an intersection. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Xochi A.

Yelp
Ordered Tofu Pad Thai and a large Hot Sake. The Pad Thai is the best that I've ever had. I've barely had anything else off of the menu personally because they make their pad thai sauce from scratch and it's got a taste that i can't find anywhere else. Plan your visit! this little place fills up fast. The service is fast and don't feel shy to get their attention. It's nestled in the Ivy Hill ish area of Oakland and so it's easy to miss and sometimes parking is hard but not impossible. It's a small cozy little corner restaurant with limited seating. It's had the same decor forever but that adds to the familial feeling you'll get while dining here.

Yelp
Had a hankering for Tom Ka soup today, so we stopped by for lunch. Although asked, it would be even better if they used chix thigh meat vs breast (breast is too dry). But, broth is always so good. Thank you!!
google avatar

Jillian N.

Yelp
Love champa! Has a great mix on their menu. I've tried an array of items that are honestly all delicious but most recently ordered the Tom yum soup (so yummy, one of my fave soups), yellow curry, papaya salad and pad see ew. Everything was amazing the only thing that I would have changed is order Laos papaya salad not Thai. I like the taste of the loas better. I've tried the sampler platter, the crispy rice dish is one of my favorites. I've tried soups and all and will come back whenever I'm craving :)

Yelp
Small neighborhood family owned business. Authentic, freshly cooked & served. It's small inside so go early or order for pick up. You won't be disappointed! If you plan to eat there during Winter, bundle up! It's cold inside because lots of Togo orders & people waiting to sit down so the door is constantly opening & closing. Chicken spring rolls were an amazing surprise! Served with fresh butter lettuce & fresh sprigs of mint leaves, small side of rice noodles and an absolutely delectable garlic sauce. Fill your lettuce wrap, add sauce & enjoy!! My granddaughter loved her Pho! The crab fried rice was fresh but not enough crab. Garlic prawns were very good with lots of broth!
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem. We came here in the early evening on a weeknight and stayed for a few hours. The place is small but accommodates many, up to 10 tables. The staff are attentive with filling up water and also not pushy about making you leave even if there are a lot of people. Best of all are the food and prices. Food was very good, with a lot of care put into basic dishes like even egg rolls -- which came with a bed of lettuce and greens, sauce, and noodles. Unique but tasty and like a spring roll with the egg roll. The pad Thai tofu had good flavor and the tofu is soft, not fried and hard like most places. The curry was also delicious. I will be telling others about this place, though I don't think they need the advertisement. There were so many people there on the weeknight, and it got pretty packed. However, it was pretty empty around 5 pm.

Yelp
Wasn't feeling too hot and had to head to work. I ordered Tom Yum soup and a side of rice and it arrive quickly on DoorDash and HOT. Delicious. And this is a MEDIUM size bowl haha. Perfect for one person.

Yelp
One of the best food spots in the bay! Champa is a sleeper hit: amazing food, fair prices, great service, and small family owned business feeling. I love coming here with friends to eat, super easy to do family style. I highly recommend the champa sampler, and everything else is gravy
google avatar

Yelp
Review is for takeout via GrubHub. 5/5, they had the order ready early and handled several orders perfectly. They're very nut allergy friendly for a Thai restaurant! I added notes to my order and everything turned out fine. Pad See-Ew (Duck) (4/5): The noodles and vegetables were very tasty, but there was very little duck in the dish. Fried Wrapped Spring Roll (3/5): I could see this being very good in person, but in a to-go order it gets too soggy. I love that they serve it with vegetables and vermicelli to make small wraps. Larp Salad (4/5): Very tasty for a "salad". The lime adds a nice kick and the portions are very sharable. Lue's Noodle Soup (4/5): Nice kick to this, the noodles were very tasty in the soup. We added beansprouts for some extra texture. Overall, my advice is to try to be on time because I can imagine that their dishes are delicious fresh, but the fried dishes don't travel too well.
google avatar

Salam A.

Yelp
I've eaten inside the restaurant once and gotten takeout one other time and have always had a very pleasant experience! My favorite thing about the food here is that it's always so fresh, you can tell that they really care about the quality of their food. The portions are plentiful and always leave me with leftovers. I absolutely love the fried spring rolls. they give you so many greens and herbs to accompany it which I love. The thai tea is a bit sweet but pairs perfectly with the savory dishes. I also have ordered a few stir fry and noodle dishes which were delicious as well. The restaurant appears to be family run as well and service is on point so I'm always happy to support them!

Yelp
I've been coming here for 11 years. They have the best Tom Kha, and papaya salad. Whenever I'm craving a taste of home, I come here. Highly recommend the sampler platter if you want to try a number of things and if you're with a friend; the best dish to share! Literally everything I've had hear is top notch. Can't go wrong!

Yelp
Omggg this place is so fire, everything was so flavorful and authentic. The restaurant is so open and welcoming as well. This is literally my new favorite Thai spot! The pad see-ew was so yummy and fresh, the noodles and beef were perfect. The Thai tea was so yummy and refreshing I will so be coming back!

Yelp
Those were probably the best avocado spring rolls I've ever had. The ONLY PROBLEM is they didn't close up the second piece I ordered. Sauces served with were really delicious. Their pad ke mau was okay. Papaya salad was good. Beef larb was good for a fully cooked version. Service was quick. Ambiance is family friendly. I'd come back to try the duck plates!
google avatar

Kamy T.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday for lunch and it was quite busy! Had to wait maybe 20-30 minutes for a table. Service was fast though. We got the champa sampler and the pad kee mao. We've been to Thailand can say this place is authentic. The sampler was delicious! The fried spring rolls were crispy and the sausage and fried rice were flavorful. Tasted very fresh. The pad kee mao was fine, a bit oily for our liking and not too flavorful. It felt a bit hot inside but we were there for a quick meal in and out.

Yelp
This restaurant is near where I live so I go there often. Limited seating and is busy on weekends. Service is good and employees are friendly and attentive. Food is consistently good. Extensive menu. Everyone should go there at least once if you like thai food.
google avatar

Yelp
Super fresh, good for a variety of eaters with different appetites. Very happy with my clay pot veggies, steamed to just tender and well seasoned/sauced. Service was a little scattered, but it might have been a busier lunch shift than normal.

Yelp
Such an awesome little Thai restaurant! Would have never found this place if it wasn't for the recommendation of someone, but glad I did! I wouldn't quite call it a hole-in-der-wall, but it's pretty discrete. Like, ya gotta know where it is or even be near it to find it! But we did and now you can know about it, too! Yippie! Food was awesome, but I'm kind of a sucker for Thai... anything. Why do you think I end up here all the time?! Everyone here was super friendly, so you always have that to look forward to. I'd be back if I was ever in the area, but it's a slim chance. Honestly not sure why I was ever in the area to begin with, HEYO!! But whatever. Go forth!!

Yelp
A wow factor me! I haven't had thai food in awhile. I was in Walnut Creek and wanted a really good thai food. I pulled up Yelp and searched thai food. Several popped up but Champa Garden caught my eye because one of the reviews really made it seem like a hidden gem which I have to confirm it is. My mouth is still watering from the food. I was scared of parking because it made it seem like it was rough to find parking but it wasn't that bad at all. Walking in - it's an authentic Thai restaurant. Nothing fancy just like a regular old school restaurant. My boyfriend said the bathrooms reminded him of Thailand since he just came back from there. My favorite dish was kaopoon and the mango. Everything had so much flavor and enough of spice. The place isn't too big but the tables were full and there was a lot of to go orders.

Yelp
Sooo good, some of the best Thai I had in a while: Sadly I forgot to take pictures. My friend and I ordered takeout from here. I got the sampler, everything in it was delicious (my friend wished she ordered mine hehe). Although the sausage was good the fried spring roll and fried rice ball salad were my favorites from this sampler. The papaya salad was a little too sour for us and didn't do well as leftovers (tasted bitter the next day). The mango sticky rice was delicious. I'd definitely get the sampler, mango sticky rice, pad see ew, and fried spring rolls again!

Yelp
My wife and I ordered take out from Champa Garden after a previous good experience. The food time estimate was on point and ready for pick up when I arrived. The staff was very attentive to the incoming rush of door dashers and they were efficient in their pick up system to minimize time in the restaurant. Food is a little pricey but that's becoming the standard for this type of cuisine in Oakland. The plus side is that the portion sizes are huge and certainly enough to share or have leftovers. The ambiance inside of the restaurant wasn't too busy during the 6pm pick up but I would assume around 7 it picks up quickly. Now for the food review: Shrimp spring rolls (3/5 on their own; 4/5 with garlic sauce): these are really big individually with multiple shrimp nearly packed inside. They don't have muscle flavor on their own so I highly suggest picking up sauce to go with it. Came with three total so good for sharing. Green Chicken Curry (5/5): best dish we ordered for the night. The curry is complex with a good balance of sweet and spicy. Loaded with veggies and chicken pieces that it is very filling. I would order this again. Crab Fried Rice (3/5): portion size is very big and there is plenty of crab mixed in here. Unfortunately this is far from the best I've had. It came very dry and many of the onions were undercooked about 75% raw still. I managed to save it by adding some different sauce to it but I don't recommend ordering this from here.

Yelp
I'm still getting used to Laos cuisine which is unfair to this establishment. I mean if I really loved the food it's 5 stars, but I'm still acquiring the taste. I need to get used to the sour flavors and variety of juicy textures in their salads. It was an enjoyable meal, but I'll need a couple more visits to get acclimated. It's perfectly located in what seems to be a neighborhood of homes. You won't be walking distance to the busy parts of Oakland. You're actually right in between 880 and 580 about 6-8 blocks from Lake Merritt. The staff seated us promptly on a Saturday at 6:45pm. The wait staff seemed to share responsibilities as we were able to get what we need from anyone that passes by. Food came promptly since we ordered quite a few salads. The Larp is my favorite. There is a little bit of Larp in sampler, but my friend knew I'd like it so he ordered a Lao style full order. Combined with the papaya/Thai salad I think we went overboard on the salad orders. The full order of Larp looks like a bowl of fried rice. It was nothing like fried rice. In Laos style, we ate it with lettuce and herbs (mint and basil). The Papaya salad was fine if you're into that. I'm just meh with it. My friend really enjoyed his chicken pumpkin curry. I thought it was pretty good, but we also ordered a vegetable Tom Kha soup. It also has a sweet curry flavor. I thought it was too much of a similar flavor so maybe I'd skip one or the other. The beef pad se-ew is great. They use really large flat noodles, tender beef and they balance out the greasiness with green veggies. I'll certainly try this cuisine again. I like it, but I want to love it. When I do, I think this place will receive an extra star.

Yelp
It started out great, we got seated right away. We ordered kaow soy, kao poon and beef larp. Kaow soy was ok, the kaow poon definitely had the better flavor and I usually like kaow soy better but not here. The portion size of the soup, meat and veggies were perfect but not the noodles. We literally had 4 or 5 chopsticks servings and was left searching for more . Beef larp was good but needed something else to take it to the next level. The vibes were great until it came time to pay. I had a gift certificate which had their name on it, logo and everything. The date it was issued and expiration date, where it was months away. They originally didn't accept it, asked another server about it then came to me and said we don't recognize this. I told them how I received it and it clearly states your business the address and who it was issued to. They went to the back to discuss something then finally came back out and just left us sitting there wondering what was going on for 10 to 15 mins while they processed other custimers bills so I finally went up to the register to see if we needed to pay more or if we were ok to go. I even tipped them over 20% and the gift certificate wasn't a large amount it was for $50. I want to support family and small businesses but this left a bad taste in my mouth. It might be my last time coming here.

Yelp
SO GOOD! I am in love with the flavors at Champa Garden. Came in around 6:10pm on a Sunday night and waited a while for a seat. Once we were seated we ordered the Champa Sampler, Angel Wings, and Basil Fried Rice. For just 2 people, the Champa Sampler and the Angel Wings were good enough to stuff us. The Basil Fried Rice was mostly untouched throughout our meal so we got a box and took it home. The fried rice was solid and really flavorful yet not too overwhelming. I liked that there were bamboo shoots in it. The sampler came with a plate of lettuce and cilantro and mint which really balanced out the other items such as the fried spring rolls and the Lao sausage which was a little spicy. There was also some crispy rice salad and the flavor was good. The angel wings were so good!! It had the same stuffing as the fried spring rolls. The batter on the chicken was not too bready which gave the wings a good crunch while not overwhelming the flavors inside. It was such a lovely atmosphere inside, nice chatter all around us!

Yelp
The place is cute but the food was only okay. We tried the pad Thai, the pad see ew, and a beef plate but were unfortunately underwhelmed by all of them. Perhaps we didn't order the right dishes so I wouldn't discount other people's reviews if they have different recommendations on what to get.

Yelp
I've ordered Champa Garden via Door Dash at least 20 times. This is the only reasonably priced, high quality stir fry noodle spot in Oakland. I'm ordering the basic American stuff; just Pad Thai or Pad See Ew. Every time it is made exactly how I want it, with a portion size that would be good for two meals if you're not ravenous. Thank you, Champa Garden, for making Door Dash worthwhile out here. You can order extra spicy!

Yelp
Champa Garden is easily one of my favorite restaurants. I've been to both the Oakland and SF locations numerous times and they're consistently great. The Champa Sampler is a must-order, but I have ordered the Nam Kaow as my entree before and would do it again. The green curry and spicy duck are also delicious. Most recently, I tried the fried tilapia with cilantro sauce, and between two people it was gone in 15 minutes. I can't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
The food here is phenomenal! Not only are the prices affordable, but I think the portion sizes are very generous. I haven't had anything I disliked. I always end up ordering the Champa Sampler and a papaya salad of sort, depending on my mood. I adore their Khao Piak, as it tastes like a warm hug. Service has always been great; everyone has been kind and attentive even though it's been busy the times I've gone. It's not too loud and you can def catch up with friends over great food here!
