The 17 Essential Restaurants in LA’s Little Tokyo

"This latest overseas transplant started off as a pop-up in Long Beach and opened its first location in Little Tokyo in 2020, filling the curry void left behind after the much-loved Curry House in Weller Court closed permanently. The katsu here is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and most importantly, the Kanazawa-style curry is thick, rich, and flavorful. For heat seekers, order the curry spicy for a burn that builds with every spoonful." - Kimberly Madrid, Eater Staff

Champion's Curry - Review - Little Tokyo - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"It may seem obvious, but just get the curry. Champion’s has other options, like Japanese-style sandwiches (we got the chicken katsu one and liked it fine), but you’re here for the thick, gravy-like curries made Kanazawa-style. They come with a dark brown, almost black sauce that smothers everything on the plate. A great lunch option, if you’re in the area, both dine-in and takeout." - Kat Hong

Super yummy. I love it. I have been four times now over about two years. I live outside of LA county now but it has made it for a restaurant I return to when around or want something more casual and quick. The curry always meets expectations. Only thing I wish they had are some croquettes but so worth it if you’re around and craving some curry and love that it’s a main entree here versus a side in addition to many other items served. More modern take but classic taste. I get the pork katsu here. Great flavor and not too fatty. I love that they have curry with noodles also which is how my father ate curry growing up. Love the style and feel of the restaurant as well. Thank you!

Google
New favorite spot unlocked in Little Tokyo! I'm not sure why this place has a rating below 4 stars. The curry here is absolutely delicious! The service is super fast, and the atmosphere is chill and welcoming. The curry does lean towards the salty side, so I highly recommend ordering some extra rice. The portions are so generous that if you order one to share between two people, it's enough. I could barely finish mine. Having extra rice on hand is handy when you're done with your cutlet and want to savor every last bit of the curry. I will definitely be coming back again!

Google
Chicken Katsu spicy curry rice / breaded chicken, tomato rakkyo salsa, sour cream sauce, chives - 5 🌟! Side of kurobuta sausage - 5 🌟! Japan had a treasured national curry dish that is often featured on many Japanese menus. But it is awesome to see a place like Champion's Curry specializing in this amazing curry. Sushi and ramen are the ones everyone knows, but if you've never had Japanese curry before, I recommend you give a try! It definitely is not the same as other countries. I had actually come across Champion's Curry once before when they collaborated with Prime Pizza to serve a wagyu pizza with a side of curry sauce, and I knew I wanted to try out their menu as soon as I could. I had the chicken and asked them to make it spicy. I like spice, but I was certainly not quite ready for how hot they make it! It isn't going to cause chaos, but be warned it has a bite to it. The chicken was very well cooked. The panko breading was crispy, and the chicken was tender. The curry was packed with flavor (in addition to the spice). I had already had a snack somewhere else, so I skipped the sides, but I was intrigued by the karage. When I visit this area, which is 4 to 6 times a year, I always use street parking, so I'm not sure if there is parking.

Google
Love this curry place! Super friendly staffs and the food hits! The rice was sticky, food was hot and you can tell it was made to order. The fish was crispy and was good with the tartar sauce. It was my first time getting Japanese curry with fried fish but it was a good combo! Hamburg steak was juicy and savory The spicy curry was certainly spicy!! 🌶️ Parking is validated in the parking lot behind it where the now former staples/Office Depot building used to be.

Google
The curry was as usual, excellent in quality, one of the most nicest places to get some authentic Japanese cuisine. The waiter we had, had tremendous work ethic, and customer service abilities and overall it was a fantastic experience.

Google
Ordered via ubereats. The curry is okay. It’s kinda mid. Not going to eat here again lol sorry. I was looking for authentic Japanese curry but it tastes like inauthentic and cold.

Google
With tip this pork katsu curry rice & salad cost $18, not worth it. It's for quick & convenient, but food is just so so. Pork Katsu is not tender nor juicy despite its perfect fried appearance. Meat is super chewy that I think I'm chewing on some type of rubber. Waiters are all super friendly although u really don't need much from them; everything is self-service.

I came here on a Sunday evening with my daughter. We needed to use the restroom and the line at Starbucks next door was ridiculous. So we decided to come here to use the restroom and as the sign states, it's for customers only. There is a kiosk to order up front or you can do so using the QR code at the tables to order. So I ordered the curry cheese fries, a Nutella cookie and some kinds of Mandarin flavored kombucha drink. I'm not a fan of kombucha but I can say this one is much lighter than the ones you can buy at the grocery store. Curry cheese fries are decent, or "mid" as my kid would call it. Nothing to write home about but it's something different nonetheless. I was expecting a very strong curry flavor but surprisingly it wasn't. Nutella cookies weren't bad according to my daughter but the sandwiches did look good and I think I may look to try them next time. They have a friendly staff and the restrooms are clean here. I wish I had more to say or write about but our visit here was mainly for the restroom. In my opinion, I think it's worth paying money to use the restrooms here as they are much cleaner than most places and the place isn't crazy busy either. I will be back to try the other stuff next time to give a more in depth review.

Yelp
I typically come here for lunch right when they open. Today there was already 2 parties seated and they've hired a server to take orders and bring out food. Previously it was an order in the front at the kiosk and open seating type of place. Our server was very friendly and attentive and got everything we needed. I ordered the minced beef spicy curry. I love spicy food and this definitely has a kick to it !! The minced beef patty was so flavorful and juicy and surprisingly filling! Their rice to curry ratio is good and I struggled to finish the plate I'll def have food coma after this This place is great to get your curry fix now that curry house is not around anymore and cocoichiban is far ! Recommended Edit: I recently found out this location closed !!!

Yelp
I've visited Champion's Curry in Berkeley a couple times, and this spot was just as good! It's in such a good location as well, so you can grab dessert after! They have a parking lot as well. The curry is a perfectly thick consistency, and the chicken katsu is so crispy. I would skip the chicken karaage though! I remember it being a bit too tasty for my liking. Absolutely love the diner vibe here, and the service is pretty fast!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night around 7:30 PM with some friends. It wasn't packed and was seated quickly. I thought it was a fast food restaurant, but it was actually a sit down and serve restaurant. The decor was really yellow but nice. We opted for the pork katsu but we're debating between original and spicy for the longest time. After reading reviews and talking with the server, I got the original because everyone was saying the spicy was pretty hot. One bold friend ended up with the spicy but and mentioned it wasn't that spicy. The pork itself was really juicy and flavorful. Came out of the dryer piping hot, just how I like it. Next time I'll opt for the spicy pork katsu. We also ordered some $6 sake high cans which were 15% ABV. Was really smooth and good! Definitely recommend. Parking is always tough in this area, there's street parking and apparently the restaurant validates for the structure.

Yelp
The last time I went here for lunch, I ordered via a kiosk. I remember the curry tasting great here, so I wanted to order in for dinner. This time, however, a waiter provided service. Note that you cannot bring in food or drinks from outside establishments inside the restaurant. I ordered boba online from the place next-door, and I had to finish my food before I went back to pick up my drink. One good thing is that if you're in a rush, you can receive your food quickly. I ordered the spicy pork katsu this time. The curry tasted good, but the pork felt tough. I could easily take the spiciness, but I feel like having it non-spicy would taste better next time. They also give you a metal spork to scoop the curry with the katsu. However, you can still ask for chopsticks. After I paid and tipped, I asked the waiter for the bathroom code. A man at the table next to mine asked for the code before me, but I didn't hear it. When I asked the waiter, he said, "Come on," with a slightly annoyed attitude. The waiter gave me the code, but I just felt confused at his initial reaction. Travel note: I recommend taking the Metro A/E line to Champion's Curry because of its close proximity to Little Tokyo Station.

Yelp
Pork katsu was juicy af. Curry was flavorful and hit the spot. We considered getting regular vs spicy curry and was scared off from the comments about spicy. If you're a spicy lover, don't get scared, I tried my friend's spicy curry and it wasn't bad. I would've ordered it too. They had a deal for $6 sake cans, Sake High, it was pretty smooth and worth it.

Yelp
I have been here 3 times and their curry fixed my cravings!!!! Their specialty is Katsu curry which is Japanese deep fried cutlet topped with the delicious curry sauce. I got fish cutlet a couple of times. Some pieces were too dry (over cooked) but still enjoyable because the curry itself was so flavorful! You can also get other combos like hamburger curry...etc. The service is ok! Sometimes I had to order it thru the machine and sometimes someone will take the order at the table. Inconsistent. Both times I dined in. A little confusing but totally acceptable ! The decor is fast food but cool!

Yelp
Chicken Katsu Curry. It was alright. The curry was salty. The Katsu was made perfectly with crunchiness on the outside. I wouldn't order it again. Hamburg Plate, was alright. I didn't like the demi-glaze with the wagyu burger patty. The salad and the macaroni was ok. Only 1 waiter. I had to get up to serve myself water. Didn't know if I do that or what. Didn't take initiative. It wasn't too busy when we went. Restroom needs the passcode to use.

Yelp
This place has a new dinner menu that includes fish & chips, steak, shrimp and more. They still have their regular all day menu which includes their famous curry. The curry sauce is a little spicy but flavorful. We ordered steak, pork katsu salad, fish and chips, zucchini fries, fried shrimp, and chicken curry. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. The steak was tender. There is a big parking lot in the back and they validate for one hour.

Yelp
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. BLOODY TOILET PAPER!!! JUDGMENTAL STAFF AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! DISCRIMINATORY. Bought two beers from here and after walking around this side of DTLA, I needed to use the restroom. I saw a CLEAR sign stating the restroom was only for paying customers. I figured since I paid this establishment for two drinks that gives me paying customer rights? Well, when I walked over to the bathroom, I was YELLED at by the employees. They lectured me about not doing drugs in the bathroom because apparently I looked like I was not a paying customer and regardless if I was, they were not letting me use the restroom. I opened the bathroom door only to find BLOOD on their toilet paper. Not only is that unsanitary and extremely unsafe BUT the fact that they contradict their own rules is EMBARRASSING AND DISGUSTING.

Yelp
I always love a meal at Champion's. If you're craving curry rice, this place will hit the spot. The curry is always perfect, and all of the variations I've had (Hamburg, NY steak etc ..) have all been great. You can order at your table via QR code, use the kiosk, or order in person at the counter. My only gripe is their kiosk interface is crazy confusing: you select options thinking you're adding things but in actuality you're removing those options; then, when your email receipt arrives, it won't match what you put into the kiosk.

Yelp
Ate lunch here on a Thursday. It was very spacious inside with plenty of tables and bright yellow walls that created a nice ambiance. You order yourself with a kiosk. Free water is available next to it that you can serve yourself. There's a window to pick up your food, whether it be dine in or takeout. There was a 15 minute wait for my food since there was an influx of orders during lunch time. They call you by your order number when it's ready. The pork tonkatsu curry rice was pretty good. For the price, it was a good portion of meat and rice. There was sour cream as a topping but I couldn't really taste it. The pork was nice and crispy but not super tender. The bread crumbs fall off easily when you lift it up to bite it.

Yelp
Came in with a party of 7 on a Saturday night and it was surprisingly empty. We were immediately seated and attended to. Service was great! The first thing I noticed about the restaurant is that it looks a lot like a chicken wing spot that was recently renovated, just thought it was funny. I tried the Chicken Curry Ramen and was more than satisfied. The dishes were incredibly heavy so I felt way more full than I'd preferred, but I suppose that speaks volumes about how great the dish was. I also tried some of my wife's chicken katsu and it was just as great. The crunch of the katsu was done perfectly. Would recommend this to anyone looking into trying this restaurant out. It's in a pretty busy area so parking might be a bit of a challenge to find, though.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Champion's for awhile now but didn't get a chance until today. And it was sheer luck since we were originally aiming to get to Suehiro before they close the OG location but they were packed! Anyway, we ended up at Champion's and I ordered the pork katsu which is what I use as my standard order to compare amongst the various curry houses. It literally came out in 1-2 minutes which led me to believe the katsu was pre-made. After taking a bite it was confirmed since it was warm and not piping hot like it would be right out of the fryer. The curry sauce was tasty but lacked depth and the plating and accoutrements were pretty basic. It basically taste like Japanese fast food which isn't terrible since fast food joints in Japan are amazing. But in the end I was hoping for a higher level so was a bit disappointed.

Yelp
Whenever you're craving curry in Little Tokyo, head over to Champions for some hearty curry! My absolute favorite dish was their Wagyu Hamburg Curry Rice since everything was so flavorful, and their Chicken Katsu Salad came in as a close second. The dressing was a sesame/kewpie Mayo sauce which is my absolute favorite, and they also include a scoop of mac salad! The Pork Katsu Sando was a bit dry and hard to eat, but it really paired well with the curry dip it comes with. Lastly, the Chicken Karaage was a great snack! Half the batch we got was moist and juicy, while the other half was a bit dry, but I loved the flavor.

Yelp
I ordered Champion's Curry's Hamburg Plate, and it was fantastic. The American Wagyu Hamburg Steak was perfectly grilled, and the Kara-Age added a delightful crunch. The Spring Salad was fresh, the Egg Macaroni Salad was creamy, and the Curry Sauce was rich and flavorful. However, the Demi-Glacé Sauce had a lemony taste that didn't quite go well with the curry sauce. Overall, I'd rate it 4/5.
google avatar

Crystal B.

Yelp
A good lunch spot! You place the order yourself on their ordering machine. They're very quick to serve the food, so my group didn't wait too long. But the wagyu Hamburg does take a little longer to cook compared to the other dishes. I loved the curry and appreciated the option to make it spicy . The wagyu was also very savory. It's definitely the best place to get your curry craving out of the way.

Yelp
Zero stars Worst customer service worst food My daughter couldn't eat the food and she wouldn't let her eat. I work the kitchen so I get no outside food but for little kids we always let them eat there kids food, . The workers were laughing, giving attitude. Especially the cook. So that was disrespectful and of course I got mad. So don't ever eat here. The food was horrible too we took it to go
google avatar

Yelp
If you love Japanese curry then this is a must visit! They have an assortment of different rice rice combinations. I would recommend the following dishes: Wagyu Hamburg curry rice (MUST GET-- this was my favorite thing I tried), chicken Katsu curry rice and fish Katsu curry rice. You can also choose from original or spicy curry. There is no custom spice level so if you want spicy you have to just eat the "spicy version". The spicy version is equivalent to a habanero spice. They also have a secret menu item where there is chopped Wagyu Hamburg with cheese and macaroni. It's not on the menu and you will have to ask for it individually.

Yelp
Aww man, I really wanted to like this place because of its interior aesthetic (gives me retro McDonalds vibes). I ordered the pork katsu salad and the pork katsu had this strange thick processed mystery-meat coat around the actual pork. The macaroni in the macaroni salad was undercooked (not even al dente). There was no taste in the macaroni salad either. I liked the fries in the curry cheese fries (deliciously crispy) but the curry sauce was super salty. My sister ordered the chicken katsu curry rice and mandarin juice and I tried a bit of both. The curry sauce had the same salt problem and the chicken was slightly pink with a gummy bite to it (ack!). The mandarin juice was refreshing albeit a bit watered down. A couple of good things but some glaring issues as well. Ehh overall not one of the food spots I'd recommend checking out in Little Tokyo.
google avatar

Yelp
Curry isn't too hard to make. I gave this place a try and it might be my last time going. They make an "okay" curry for a high price. If there were other choices for curry, I would definitely pick this one last.
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
I just had a pick up order, which was waiting in a bag on the counter. Chicken katsu sandwich with an order of fries, gravy on the side. The meal hit the spot and met expectations. With the rising cost of food nowadays, I think this is a good option for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Champion's Curry is our go-to #1 Japanese curry spot in LA. It is the closest I've had to my favorite curry restaurant where we used to enjoy family dinners growing up in Japan. The chicken katsu is perfectly breaded and perfectly crispy without being dry at all. And the star of the show is obviously the SAUCE. It has bits of ground beef in it and has a great consistency. I love spice so I always order the spicy option and oh my gosh it is FIRE and so damn delicious and addicting. (Don't order if you can't handle heat!) By the end of my meal, my plate is always completely clean because I literally lick the plate. It is THAT good. My only complaint is the portions are a bit on the smaller side which always leaves me craving more. More recommendations on my blog www.losangelysse.com

Yelp
My husband and I were trying to find a place that was open on Monday at 4pm in little Tokyo. Surprisingly, this was actually harder than we expected! Lol!!! Thankfully, champion's curry was open! The restaurant itself is pretty bare bones and somewhat devoid of human employees. You order on a kiosk, get your own water, pick up your order when your order is called, and then return your tray at the front. I personally didn't have any issues w this, but it was just... different. There was only 2 people working the restaurant - the guy making the food and another guy washing dishes. Lol! Skeleton crew. The curry dishes come in only 2 spice levels: original and spicy. As someone who eats spicy food regularly, I was actually surprised at how spicy the spicy option was! So if you're into spice, go for it. If you aren't, I'd def say avoid the spicy. We got the fish katsu and the wagyu Hamburg. The fish was nice and crispy. The Hamburg was perfectly juicy and flavorful. If we ever come back, def reordering the Hamburg curry. Overall, a quiet, tasty meal. I think the portion size was a little small... at least for us. We ended up going across the street for a slice of pizza right after. Hahaha

Yelp
Not really the "Champion Curry" you would think off. Let's start off the food. I ordered just the chicken curry. It came out like after 10 minutes. When it arrived, I took both the bite of the chicken (outside part before reaching middle) and the curry. Was good! Had hoped it resumed that way but as you continue onwards the middle, it is rubbery. It's juicy but rubbery when it comes to chewing. From the look of it, it's from a chicken thighs. My sister and I continued eating all the rice and curry, leaving the middle parts of the chicken alone. Unfortunately. I had seen another couple table down a girl was picking her chicken. Her curry and rice were gone like ours-leaving behind the chicken on plate. Her emotions seems to tell me a lot though I can't always speculate the same opinion. Next is customer service. Our waiter is uh, kinda impatient but absent. He didn't take our order after 10 minutes sitting down. Placing down orders, he left. He didn't interact with us and was keeping entertain with the large party of 6. Order came and we ate. I don't need to repeat what I wrote on top. Then came to our bill-he came back to see our plates very disappointment, asking what was wrong with the food. We expressed how we weren't too happy with the chicken and he gave us a blank expression with an "oh'kay". We just paid with no tip and left. I'll try other Champion Curry but not this one, especially the waiter.

Yelp
Not sure if this was normal or if they are short staffed but there is only one person who is the server / host / runner and he had no clue how to ring up orders or how to make changes or updates in the system. Almost walked out before I got my food because the dude was incompetent. Curry was decent but customer service was nonexistent. Go somewhere else to spend your hard earned money. Also went to use the restroom after and dude asked me if I was dining at the restaurant. Sure did bro and dropped a hundred bucks for a bad time.

Yelp
Dare I say, the best curry in Little Tokyo? I haven't had curry this good in a long time (Especially after Curry House closed... ) My friend and I got the Beef Minced Katsu Curry Rice and my other friend got the Wagyu Hamburg Curry Rice. We all loved what we got. I got my curry spicy! It's not for the weak, my friends could not handle the heat, but I loved it! You should also add their $1 drink add on! It's the size of a normal drink! Will definitely be coming here again! I've recommended it to others, and they also enjoyed the food here! Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
I've been here twice and both times have been good. The katsu is crisp and juicy. The curry is a bit on the salty side but it balances out with the rice and pickled tomato-thing of some kind. I do wish you get a bit more of the pickeld tomato-thing because it works like a palate cleanser and I would have some after each bite of the curry katsu. Both times, the restaurant has been fairly empty. Just one other table eating there. So there's definitely no wait for seating. There is validation for parking but I think it's for the garage next to it. I didn't park there so I can't confirm that. I'm only going by what the workers described.

Yelp
I called while driving & asked to place a pickup order & the man who answered told me "No Go Online" & then hung up on me. I have eaten here once before a it was decent at best, definitely much better curry in little Tokyo.

Yelp
I found pictures in my camera roll so I will post them. My review is still 2 stars. Sorry.

Yelp
First time here and I think all the 5 stars never had curry before because this place misses the mark. It was dinner time and the place was empty and the place needs some ventilation because it seems like old fry oil. Had the chicken curry cutlet and the portion just isn't justified. Scoop of rice with burnt chicken pieces fried in old oil The curry taste isn't bad but not great either. Sorry this is not the curry champion Boy I miss the old Curry House :(
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
It's ok. My hunch is people end up going here when the line for Shinsengumi next door is too long. I've had more complex and strong curry at other places before. "Spicy" here is also blow-your-nose spicy. I didn't think the tomato or the aioli really went with this - it didn't add to the flavor in a cohesive way.

Yelp
NEVER AGAIN. We visited on Saturday around 5:00 pm since we were around. 3 or 4 groups were there and they we already eating or done. The inside was extremely hot (No AC and Sunlight) We understand Sunlight, however, they could "sign" if they have broken AC or something. Anyway, we decided to accept it and try this location since Long Beach location was closed a while ago. We ordered Chicken Katsu Carry and Original without any special request. Waited almost 20mins to get our order. No one was waiting for any order, but took 20mins? Thinking about maybe there were pick-up order, but it were not. (We did not wait for 20 mins at LB location with lines!!) The food was not hot, it was warm (on cold-side) and it was just okay taste. While we were waiting for our food, realized that we had to ask for parking validation, and we did. The staff were not friendly, and the one looked even he does not want to help us. to receive validation was too complicated. the staff asked too many questions besides showing the receipt. So, we gave up. Overall, we will not be back.

Yelp
YUM. Japanese curry. Chicken Pork Beef Curry rice Curry sandwich Kara-age It's delish and reasonably priced. Thumbs up.

Yelp
My favorite curry spot in little Tokyo deserves a review. They have a parking lot, that is free for one hour with the receipt. There is 3 ways to order your food. You can either do it with the cashier, on their mobile system & a website code on their tables. All ways work really work and I have no trouble navigating either of them. My go to is always their chicken katsu. All I can say is you need to go here if you haven't. Chicken made to perfection, the curry is delicious with amazing spice and the extra order of cheese just sends it over the moon.

Yelp
Horrible POS place. My child was in rush to use to restroom. We were willing to pay for the meal however the server would not provide code for restroom. He was busying with his customers on the table. Seriously it only takes seconds to provide the info. I asked the staffs in the kitchen for the code but they wouldnt give us the code. Buncha a hole running the business.

Yelp
Many of my favorite Japanese curry places in Little Tokyo closed down so I was interested in seeing if this place fit the bill. They occupy the spot next to Starbucks and Office Depot and while I did not park here, they validate for parking presumably at the lot in front of the Office Depot. When you enter you'll notice the giant mural of their mascot on the wall, and tables very much reminiscent of old timey diners, featuring a round table at the front. This establishment does not accept cash and they have a self service kiosk in addition to the regular cashier. I really like the Self Service kiosk so I can check out all of the add-ons without the anxiety of asking the cashier to go through the different options. They offer the curry in two spice levels, none or mild (in my opinion). I had the mustard chicken Katsu sandwich with the spicy curry. It was delicious and the Katsu was nice and crispy. They give a cup of curry on the side so you dip it in. I prefer pouring it over the sandwich so as not to drop anything from the sandwich. It was cut in half which I am grateful because I had to take the other half home. Reheat with an airfryer for best taste and crispy bun. I added the egg macaroni salad for $1. Honestly I was a little disappointed because I only found one piece of egg. It was heavy in mayo, I added the seasoning that was available on the table, not sure what it was but that helped balance out the heaviness of the mayo. I think if I had ordered a full side of the egg macaroni salad, I would have had more pieces of egg. My boyfriend ordered the chicken Katsu rice with egg, a side of fries for $1 and a side of beef. He got the non spicy curry but he preferred the spicy one. There is a water station where you can fill paper cups and hand sanitizers throughout. I need to come back to try their curry pan but that's only available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Yelp
One of the curry places in Little Tokyo Tokyo. Tried it out for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with the great food. The curry was very flavorful and the Katsu was fresh and crunchy. The meat inside the Katsu you can choose from chicken beef and pork. I got the pork Katsu and really liked how it was a little bit fatty and not dry. There was a self-ordering kiosk that was easy to use. The table and seating was very comfortable and clean. Also there was an area where you could get water and napkins yourself. I definitely got my fill of food and I would recommend this diner style restaurant if you want curry in Little Tokyo.

Yelp
RIP Curry House, you will definitely be missed. Aside from CocoIchi, there's really no other Japanese curry chain, so I was pretty happy to hear that we were getting Champion's Curry in SoCal. We came on a Sunday afternoon around lunch time, aside from 1 other party, there was nobody else there. They give you a buzzer to let you know when your food's ready and it didn't take too long for our's to come out. We got the: 1) Wagyu Hamburg curry: -Not the biggest fan of this hamburg. It was more like shredded beef than the standard minced beef. My main issue was that there were parts of it that were chewy & tough, along with a tad dry, that made the entire dish less appealing. 2) Pork Katsu curry + fries (added): -It's a standard pork katsu, crispy on the outside. Some pieces (end pieces) were a bit dry on the inside too unfortunately. We got spicy for both dishes and it does pack more heat than spicy Curry House dishes and it rounds out to about a 3-4 at CoCoIchi if I am to be honest. Cleanly restaurant, , maybe I just haven't ordered the right thing yet.

Yelp
I ordered menchi katsu (fried ground beef patty; like Hamburg steak but fried) but it was RAW. At first I thought it was a couple of pieces, but it was the entire patty. The katsu was already sliced, but it was clear that it was undercooked. I tried to eat the edges of each slice, taking my fork and knife to slice off the cooked parts until I realized I was eating just the coating/breadcrumbs. Needless to say this it wasn't worth salvaging. Apparently the restaurant manager didn't consider this an issue worth salvaging either. I wanted a refund at least, considering how pricey it was (almost $20 for the menchi katsu meal). The manager refused to consider a refund, and instead offered to MICROWAVE the leftover RAW parts. I'm not a food scientist or anything, but I just don't find this suggestion sanitary or hygienic -- to MICROWAVE RAW, UNCOOKED BEEF and SERVE IT BACK to me -- as if a microwave has the power to thoroughly cook "rawness away". Why wasn't this done the first time upon cooking my order? Then again, I got the impression that the staff and manager couldn't care less about anything. I even heard one of the staff mumble something along the lines of "f/k this, I'm tryna get outta here asap" as they microwaved an order of curry pan. It's fair of the employee to want to leave because food service work sucks and THEIR MANAGER SUCKS. I get that food service/restaurant work is demanding (especially when busy, but it wasn't at the time) because I have worked in restaurants, but I'd NEVER try to serve anyone salmonella or food poisoning, not even in my own kitchen or to myself. Even when picking up my food, which was ready at the same time as my other two friends, the staff was eager to just get rid of orders without checking to make sure it was given to the correct person (read: they almost gave my friend's order to me). I'm disappointed and unsettled because I wanted to like this place. I hoped it could replace the void in my stomach since Curry House closed and Coco Ichibanya wasn't memorable (enough for me). But I am giving 2 stars because the other items (chicken karaage/fries) I ordered were cooked through and decent, but there was nothing spectacular about them that would make me come back. Although my friend thoroughly enjoyed their chicken katsu sandwich, with a side of curry, I'm too scared and reluctant to give this place another chance.

Yelp
It's hard to find a good japanese style curry place. This is the one for me. All in the menu is good but I think steak curry is # 1!!

Yelp
Despite a poor first impression, my husband and I have returned multiple times with our craving for curry and our subsequent visits have been significantly better! We're a fan of the chicken katsu curry, which comes super crispy on a bed of fluffy rice and thick, hearty curry. If you prefer more watery curry, this may not fit your bill.. but if you like that thick, robust curry - you'll want to try this. On occasion, they have curry buns available - a crispy exterior bun filled with some curry. A great snack, quick bite. My husband gets curry here nearly weekly for his Friday lunch treat, his way to kick start the weekend. Really glad we gave it another chance and will continue coming for the flavorful curry!

Yelp
Friendly staff and great food for great price. I would check this place out if you want something quick and delicious and are in the area. They have a restroom for customers which is a very rare thing in Little Tokyo so definitely a plus.

Yelp
** February Visit 2022: Saturday Evening ** I had a group of 10 hungry friends and we were famished; however, we came to Little Tokyo at 7pm and all the restaurants at a hour plus wait for dine-in. As we walked around to see our options, I noticed that Champions had many open tables (as well as a 4 star Yelp rating) so we decided to dine-in. We combined the middle tables together and patrons have an option to either order at the counter or scan the QR code which was available at each table. The menu is very simple. Most dishes were rice, a side of salsa, and meat with curry sauce ladled over. I decided on the pork katsu ($13.50), and regret that I did not do a fried egg add one ($1). You can pick your level of spiciness too! Although I opted to go original. My order was ready and like many fast casual places patrons go to the counter to pickup their trays. There's a water cannister near the back for thirsty patrons. As for the meal: The pork katsu was nice and juicy. The curry had a little big of a kick. Nothing too spicy, but you can definitely tell that there were layers of flavor. The restaurant makes me think that this is the type of fast food that people in Japan may eat - quick, but not compromised on taste. Overall, I recommend this as a option if you have large groups in Little Tokyo! Notes: -Gender Neutral Bathroom -Did not need to show vac card for dine in

Yelp
Your fast-food type of curry to just grab and go. Usually it's pretty empty in here, but a group of us wanted to eat here since it was an easy place for us sit as a large party. You order through their kiosk (basically like how you order sunright) and it was super easy! They text you when your order is ready and they have it ready at the pick up window. I ordered the spicy pork katsu curry and let me tell you, it is SPICY. I thought my tolerance level has gone up, but after eating this, this was actually really spicy to eat haha. Oddly enough, they only have one spicy level (7/10), so it's either no spicy or just extremely spicy omg. The presentation looked promising, so I couldn't wait to dig into it! After a few bites, I thought it was okay? Although, the chicken was pretty tough, so it's kind of hard to bite it apart since you have to pull it quite a bit. The curry flavor was just okay? It was extremely spicy for me though, I started to sweat loool. It didn't help that this place was also super hot in the inside, it didn't seem very well ventilated, so it made me feel even more sweaty. The spicyness was killing me, I actually did not enjoy the meal because of how spicy it was. The diced tomatoes were kind of random, but it helped me cooled down a bit from the spicy. I feel like even if I just got the regular flavor, it the curry wouldn't really stand out. At the end of the meal, I didn't really feel good about it tbh. The chicken was alright, the curry didn't appeal to me, and I was also just dying from the spice lol. They should add different levels of spicy to their menu because I do like a kick of spice, but I also did not believe it to be THIS spicy.

Yelp
The curry was a bit too salty for my liking, and it definitely tasted like the fast food version of curry. It was decent, but definitely wish there was more depth. The service was great but the food itself could have been much better. The presentation was solid, but the food itself definitely was midtier. The katsu was too hard, and the curry was two dimensional

Yelp
Who doesn't love curry ? Japanese are very particular about the curry recipes. I walk up and I start talking to the people behind the counter for them to direct me to a computer . Oder here first please. Oh OK. Hold on do I work here sure does feel like it. LOL . Don't get me wrong it was a super easy. The restaurants it's self is beautiful .Lots of bright colors cool seating I really like the layout. The food was amazing and my only complaint was I really wish there would've been more curry. Unfortunately they give you a salsa size container amount of curry. I maybe would've been satisfied with two of them.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place but my "wagyu" was raw.... Is that normal? So torn because the curry was fine, albeit on the saltier side. (Spicy flavor is SPICY. I recommend ordering the regular and the spicy and sharing.). Their sides were surprisingly good. I didn't take a pic of the little but delicious salad and thick cut fries. I want to come back but I think I'll order a katsu dish.

Yelp
Found this curry restaurant with a cute diner vibe in Little Tokyo. I would recommend making your item a combo for $1 more, having the choice of either small fries, small salad, or one of their specialty drinks. The spring salad was interesting. It used a vinaigrette that tasted like curry, something I've never had before in a salad. It was more salty than I would have liked, but looking back I did enjoy it and it was a worthwhile experience! The chicken katsu was actually cooked amazingly. It wasn't dry at all, and it was seasoned well with a lot of pepper. I personally enjoyed it more than their pork katsu. You get a decent amount of meat too per order! I would recommend getting an egg for an extra dollar; they cook it about over-medium (yolk half runny) and it pairs well with the dishes. WARNING though, the spicy option is INCREDIBLY spicy as the other comments also point out. As someone who loves spicy food, I would still go for the original non-spice level at this place. Overall, I think this place is a great addition to Little Tokyo. If you're in the mood for a casual, fun Japanese curry, give this place a shot!
