The 38 Best Restaurants in Vancouver | Eater

"Chancho’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it carnitas shop is the Mexican dining experience that will likely ruin you for any other tacos in town, thanks to their house-made tortillas and marvelous, melting pork sold by the pound. Have the campechano, a mix of shoulder, leg, and belly hand-chopped to order and spangled with shards of crisp skin. Orders come with pickled red cabbage, pinto beans, salsas, and those incredible tortillas, kissed with a whisper of char. Take your food away to the nearby Seawall for the perfect porky picnic, or stay to enjoy the blaring Mexican pop." - Nikki Bayley

I was really craving chilaquiles and stumbled upon Chancho—what a great find! The dish was spot on: beans, salsa verde, and the option to add carnitas for just $5 (totally worth it). The totopos were perfect—not too crunchy, not too soggy—and the portion size was generous and filling. I also tried the café de olla (iced, because summer calls for it) and it was delicious. Service was quick and the staff were super friendly. The restaurant has plenty of space, so seating was no problem, and there’s even a cozy little patio out front with bar seating where dogs are welcome. Overall, an excellent experience—I’ll definitely be coming back!

My friends and I came here for dinner to celebrate my friends birthday. We were not able to reserve a table because they don't take reservations so we put out name down and waited for a table. I had high hopes for the food here but I was left a little disappointed. I ordered the veggie tacos which were good but I was still hungry and so ordered more. My partner had the same issue. We both love Mexican food neither of us felt like the food was amazing. Also, in terms of value for money, I'm not so sure. Overall we had a good time celebrating my friends birthday which I'm grateful for. However I'm not sure that I would come back.

The atmosphere is very good and theybhave very friendly staff. The food is very low quality. We ordered 2 dishes. Tacos were not tasty and the meat seemed over cooked and it didn't taste good at all, I couldn't finish it. The drink was ok. It can be improved.

Stopped here for lunch. I love chilaquiles and after finding out they make their own tortillas and tortilla chips in house I thought I’d give them a try (red or green sauce options). My wife had Birria tacos with cheese added on (+$2). They seat you and give you menus but you have to go place your order at the host / pay station at the entrance which could mean waiting there while they seat new arrivals. Not sure why they don’t just have table service but it wasn’t a huge deal. My order was pretty good and the chips were great but overall seemed on the dry side. I asked for some more red sauce and they brought a generous dish of additional sauce which was heated up as well. It was quite filling so good value if you’re hungry. The birria was a smaller amount but tasted good according to my wife and she noted the consommé as especially good. It was served with cilantro on the side. I also had a sleeve of local draught lager and it complimented the food quite well. They had a nice mix of Central and South American tunes playing at a pleasant volume that provided a nice atmosphere but didn’t prevent easy conversation. Prices were midrange but the food tasted homemade and was better than most more generic Mexican eateries.

This is my favourite place to eat mostly because it tastes just so damn good. Its a little pricey for the amount you get but, again, it tastes just so good. Got the 1/4pd mixed meats. I love the salsas tho i remember the green one being spicier before. Im weak to spice so this helps me 🙈

Without a doubt my favorite tacos in Vancouver! Love the maciza carnitas and birria ones! Tortillas are the best! And the michelada definitely a myst try! Feels like Mexico and I love it!

Excellent margarita. Excellent Torta. Both on happy hour. Nice sunny warm patio. Ordering at the front and up front was a minor inconvenience but food and drink was top tier.

Google
Authentic Mexican food in the heart of Vancouver Chancho Tortillería serves some of the best tacos I’ve had in the city. The tortillas are handmade from real corn, and the carnitas (especially the campechano) are full of flavour. Portions are generous, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff is super friendly. Perfect for a casual meal or enjoying happy hour. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Price/quality (4/4): I ordered the maciza and it was very tasty. The meat was tender and well-seasoned, just like it should be. They do have a limited menu though, which probably helped keep costs down without compromising on quality. Service (1/1): This restaurant is set up differently in that customers need to pay up front, but it was otherwise friendly and effective. Would I come here again: Yes

Yelp
Grabbed dinner with a friend here a few weeks ago and for drinks, 1/2 lbs of pork belly with tacos and guacamole with chips it was about $80 after tax/tip I liked the vibe - it was casual - you order at the front host/hostess station and they bring your food to you. Not everyone is used to that but I found it manageable. They refilled my water regularly. Washrooms were clean which were nice and the restaurant area though dimly lit was well maintained. Definitely would recommend the pork belly tacos - they were surprisingly filling for 1/2 lbs even though pricier than some other places it tasted good which was important. Guacamole was also super solid and chips were decent - not stale like some taco places around town. Would go again - but watch out on ordering as those costs can add up. One of the patrons at another table grabbed a slice of pizza from next door and ate it outside before coming back in to join their dining companions.

Yelp
I went here with some friends for a late night post-dinner hangout and since we were a large group, a lot of places cannot really seat a large group without reservation on a Saturday night, as expected. Here, it was not busy at all, so we went right in and got some food and drinks. I tried the campechano set and the pricing is very high for what you get for quality. Maybe because I grew up in SoCal so I am spoiled with Mexican food, but here, the quality is not really up to par and overpriced. 3 tacos for 16.50 (1/4 lb) and goes up from here, it is quite a bit pricey. There is decent amount of meat but the tacos felt a bit bland and the tortilla is a bit stale so it was very hard to cut into. The server doesn't put much effort and just asks us to do a good fraction of their work with ordering, etc.

Yelp
Came here one afternoon for drinks. There was no one else here which could have been a sign. You have to order up front when you walk in and pay at the register, then they will bring your order out to you. Pretty inconvenient if you want to to sit down and just order things like at a regular restaurant. Needless to say this was a big factor in us not staying much longer than our first round of drinks. Who wants to get up order, pay, sit down, repeat over and over again? Got a couple of margaritas that were just OK. There is an open wall between inside and outside so whatever temperature it is outside is the same inside, plus there were a lot of fruit flies inside.

Yelp
We got -1/4 Pound Panza (Pork Belly) (17.50$): I think I liked this one the best. Thanks to the fattinness of the pork belly, it had the most flavour/was not dry. -1/4 Pound Campechano (Pork Shoulder+Belly) (15.50$): Was ok, one again-felt like it could've had more flavour. -1/4 Pound Al Pastor (Pork + Pineapple) (?$): Surprisingly liked this one the least even though it's usually my favourite. Felt like it lacked a bit of flavour/moisture, and the portion of pineapple wasn't enough for all the tacos. Also was missing the coleslaw. The tortillas: they were quite good, however they were completely falling apart. The presentation, albeit aesthetically pleasing, was quite inconvenient given that all 4 tortillas were piled under the meat. As such, instinctually (to guarantee an adequate tortilla to filling ratio), you might think to distribute the filling before digging in. However, if you do this, the tortillas will weaken due to the juices of the filling, resulting in anticipating a bite just for it to escape your mouth at the last second. Also, I think I would prefer for the filling to come pre-distributed per tortilla. I think overall it was quite expensive for what you're getting. I think there's potential, but was a bit disappointed.

Yelp
This is my 3rd time going to Chancho! My first time was at their Yaletown location, and I've been twice now to their Commercial Drive location. Service and quality are still stellar! It's a casual place; you go in and order first, then seat yourself. My friend and I split 1/4 lb each of veggie mix and pork mix. Each order comes with 4 tacos. My favourite part of Chancho are their side dippings and add-ons. I basically ate the beans side dish on its own at the end of my meal haha. The pork mix is tender and flavourful, with a few pieces of fat embedded to keep it moist. The veggie mix is flavourful too! The first time I ate it, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The only thing I dislike is the presentation of the tacos. The 4 tacos are layered on top of each other, fanned out, and the meat/veggie filling put on top. It's hard to get an even distribution of filling to taco, because the top one always has the most sauce/liquid. It's also a bit clunky to pull out the taco and grab filling to put in it. Service is very friendly and welcoming! Everyone has a smile.

Yelp
We did walk in and had brunch here this morning. No lineup. We scanned a QR code at the front of the restaurant. In the end, the server introduced what we should be ordering. We thanked him for his recommendations. It was our first time here and didn't know what's good. We ordered veggie and pork tacos as well as Chilaquiles con Huevos. All of the dishes were great. We usually eat Mexican food in US but rarely in Canada. The service was great. The server was very caring and attentive. We didn't ask for extra plates but he noticed we were sharing food, so he brought us extra an additional plate and fork. The ambiance and background music perfectly matched the Mexican cuisine. We enjoyed the brunch here. The interior design was on par with we expected to see on Commercial Drive. Also, the washroom was clean. I would recommend friends and family could come here for brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hours.

Yelp
I have long said that Vancouver has a dearth of good Mexican food. Chancho is doing its part in proving me wrong. My friend and I ordered a half pound of pork shoulder and a half pound of pork belly. The pork shoulder was great--meaty and delicious, but the pork belly... the pork belly is what I'll be dreaming about. It was melt-in-your-mouth soft with perfectly fatty bits. On top of all that were three fantastic salsas with varying levels of heat, hearty black beans, and some pickled cabbage and lime to balance it all out. It didn't look like much with an eye test, but it was surprisingly filling! Service is casual, you order at the front as soon as you walk in (so be ready). I enjoyed the bright pink exterior, but didn't love the plasticky tablecloths. All in all a great spot for lunch but not super conducive to hanging out for much longer!

Yelp
I've been to their other restaurant on Davie Street and was delighted to see they opened a new location on Commercial! Congratulations on the growth and success of your business! When you're walking down The Drive, look out for the characteristic pink exterior. When you walk in you'll see enjoy the vibrant energy and the artistic paintings on the walls. In other words, the first impression is definitely "a vibe". My friends and I previewed the menu online in advance because we knew that you have to order right away before you sit down at a table. We ordered 1 pound of carnitas, which came with fresh corn tortillas, the chilaquiles (happy hour special), palomas, and classic margaritas. For dessert we got the churros :) YUM!!!!!!!! The staff were all very friendly! I was super happy with the quality of the food and the fast, friendly service. I look forward to coming back again soon :)

Yelp
Great taqueria. A bit different - they focus on pork carnitas. The carnitas are great - really good quality pork, both kinds are really good. I also really love the different sauces they give you, plus they give you good amount of black beans and guacamole also. They also have tortas which looked really good - made from crispy French bread. Soup was also delicious.

Yelp
Everything went well! The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is unpretentious and authentic-feeling (not trying too hard), and my order came quickly both times I visited. The menu has very few items, so they can do what they do spectacularly! They render the pork belly so perfectly that they don't seem overly fatty! Amazing! I'll keep coming back often!

Yelp
I stopped by to takeout a Torta (mixed pork). Pretty good sandwich, filling was generous and came with some pickled onions and green salsa on the side. Everything tasted fresh. My gripe is the bread - similar to a french baguette, very crusty. Not your typical Mexican torta bread. The selection of meats is also limited. For Vancouver Mexican food, solid 4/5. But for Mexican food in general, 3/5 at best. I was spoiled while living in SoCal and that bar is set very high. Service was great, everyone super friendly. Place seemed clean and comfortable. Street parking.

Yelp
We ordered the 1/4 lb squash and 1/4 lb potato tacos, both were insanely delicious. In my experience, lots of places sleep on veggie tacos but these were so flavorful and the three salsas + beans and slaw exceeded my expectation! The food came out fast and the service was incredible.

David P.

Yelp
I found the very loud music distracting . It was impossible to enjoy the food and converse with your lunch companions. This is a shame, because the food is good.

Grace M.

Yelp
Food was average as, dry, tortillas broke and expensive. Good vibe and atmosphere
