Chapati and Karak - Review - Knightsbridge - London - The Infatuation

"Chapati & Karak is the UK outpost of a popular cafe in Doha, and this small spot on Brompton Road specialises in chapati and karak—a real plot twist, we know. The menu includes different variations of chapati (a savoury layered flatbread that originates from India) filled with all manner of delicious things from spicy keema, to cheddar cheese, to cinnamon, or Nutella. Paired with the sweet and fragrant karak (a strong black tea, sweetened with evaporated milk and spiced with cardamom), it makes for an ideal takeaway park picnic situation—if you can wait until you get to Hyde Park before taking a bite of your wrap that is." - Rianne Shlebak

Worth the hype. Some prices are a little steep but expect that in Knightsbridge. Staff were all really great. Butter chicken chapati and pistachio french toast tasted great. Very busy atmosphere.

Tried out Chapati & Karak recently definitely a one-of-a-kind spot. The menu isn’t very big, and honestly, it’s quite pricey for what you get. I wasn’t too impressed with the hot karak; it didn’t taste fresh at all. On the flip side, the karak milkshake was actually pretty good! I tried the chicken safeeha too, but it was super expensive for something that tasted just okay. I think the main appeal is the location, which probably draws people in more than the food itself. It was a nice experience overall, but not one I’d go out of my way to repeat. That said, the staff were lovely really friendly and helpful throughout

We ordered 4 soft cheese chapatis and they cost us 38£! The chapati was not bad but ok but not worth the price to be 9.50£=46 AED even if it is in Knightsbridge it's too pricey at the end it’s just bread and cheese, we visited before 5 years and it was around for 4 or 5£.

Delicious food but the prices are insane. This used to be my go-to spot in Doha because it was super affordable, but wow—the prices here are ridiculous. I won’t lie, the food was genuinely delicious and the Karak definitely hit the spot, but for the amount of food we ordered, the total was way too much. The service was also painfully slow. I clearly told the waitress my order, let her repeat it back to me, corrected it twice, and somehow it still came out wrong. Honestly, that’s frustrating—please figure out what’s going on. And seriously, I’m begging you lower the prices. It’s not worth it anymore at this rate.

Unfortunately I used to like this place but after my visit the other day I left feeling robbed. The chips that we were charged additional 2.50 per portion for was absurd because they didn’t even add a decent amount. Sadly will not return

Google
We have been here several times but this time we had the pleasure of Sarin serving us. She was super friendly and made recommendations. You know you’re onto a winner when the staff make the customers feel comfortable and welcome. The karak chai, karak shake and ginger milk were delicious. Next time will try the food. Decor is cozy and inviting. Bathrooms are very clean and well stocked.

We visited on a weekday evening, the place was quite and has a unique charm! The menu is limited but good if you just wanted to grab a karak tea. We ordered a karak tea, which just hit the right spot! We also ordered a karak shake, which was nice but a little on the sweet side. Would go back for another hot karak!

Had an absolutely unforgettable dining experience at *Chai & Chapati* , which is recommended to me by a very good friend of mine and a famous TikTok celebrity *Zhila beauty*. From the moment I walked in, the warm hospitality and inviting aromas set the tone for an incredible meal. The menu is a celebration of authentic Indian cuisine, with a perfect balance between traditional flavors and modern presentation. I started with the samosas—crispy on the outside and generously filled with a spiced potato mixture that hit all the right notes. The butter chicken was rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor, while the lamb biryani was fragrant, perfectly cooked, and came with a generous serving of raita. What truly stood out was the attention to detail—the naan was hot and fluffy, the spices were beautifully balanced (nothing overpowering), and the staff was more than happy to adjust the spice level to my preference. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The staff genuinely cared about our dining experience and offered great recommendations. To top it off, we were treated to a complimentary dessert of gulab jamun—soft, warm, and dripping with sweetness. Whether you’re new to Indian cuisine or a seasoned fan, *Chai & Chapati is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back for more!

Yelp
Excellent place for our Desi Kadak Chai We also had Chapati with egg and cheese chappati. Service was fast, staff was very nice and quick and ambience is nice and clean.

Yelp
If the web site is to be believed, cars line up from sunrise to sunset outside the Chapati & Karak shack in Doha, Qatar. I couldn't personally attest to this, but the London outpost of Chapati & Karak did seem to be popular and I was one of the few patrons not of Middle East origin. Though the food here is Indian, the menu items - chapati and karak almost exclusively - were unfamiliar to me. I indulged in milk tea, a savory chapati, and an utterly delicious special from the oven, "Safiha's Meat" (£14) Chapati & Karak proved to be a nice lunchtime stop with good, warm food and a pleasant, moderately upscale dining room. I was sorry that I'd not arrived with a larger party which would allow me to sample more of the menu and possibly to sit on the floor at the enticing Moroccan-style seating. I appreciated that the food and menu here were very different from any I regularly encounter in San Francisco-area Indian restaurants. That the fare and ambiance were both enjoyable was icing on the cake.

Yelp
Grabbed a snack and a quick chai here while in London. It was decent. Not a ton of flavor in either and the chai was very bitter, but I think it was my bad as I didn't fully understand how I could have customized it on the menu.

Yelp
Not a big fan of milk tea but this one was really good (although they add sugar by default). The sweet paratha was also delicious and the interior and service are amazing. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We stopped in on a very cold winter's eve. It was completely full- people seated in the cozy nooks munching on chapati and sipping karak. We had no option but to take it to go. Authentic Arabic Karak (Indian chai) just opposite of Harrods department store. Delicious and very affordable at a mere £3 per cup vs the same expensive product inside of Harrods Mezzah Lounge. Great spot in central London for a delicious cuppa karak!

Yelp
I heard about this place from a friend who lives in London and I appreciate a good tea (Karak) so I went to try it during my visit to London. Let me just say, I was not disappointed. I tried the cardamom Karak and sweet cheese chapati and the regular chapati! Amazing! The depth of the flavor in the Karak was next level! I went back the next day again to Knightsbridge just for the Karak because it was that good! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I really like this cafe .. its located in the heart of London ( Knightsbridge) with an nice view near to harrods , mostly Arab people visit this cafe because they are specialized at Karak and Chapati.. it's always crowded.. staff are friendly and quick at serving.. try the karak & cheese chapati

Yelp
Very nice cafe space with big tables and clean decor. Great that the space can accommodate a large group of people. The menus is simple with savoury and sweet chopati and karaoke which is essentially a masala chai. It is a bit of pricey side but very pleasant. As a person who is not from the region, I thoroughly enjoyed it as I felt as if I had travelled back in time...

Yelp
So personally I'm absolutely not a fan of milk tea/traditional Indian style tea until this place changed it forever. During my visit to London, I was taken to this perfect chai place near Harrods on Knightsbridge and what an amazing experience it was! NO matter what time of the day, this place is always packed. For big groups (any larger than 4ppl) it's recommended to make a reservation at one of the moroccan style booth, which some of them are floor style to get the real moroccan/indian style experience! IN LOVE with their interior!!! Intricate details, colorful lanterns and chic little windows all throughout the place! MUST HAVE their cardamom karak, with/without the chapati. Perfect amount of cardamom and milk, (not a fan but LOVE it in the karak!) Each cuppa heaven is £4.75 which is totally reasonable for how flavorful and exquisite it is! I can't wait to go back to London and try it over and over again!

Yelp
I went to first shop located in Doha,Qatar and I'm really excited when I knew that they opened in London. This is a really nice place to drink the famous tea with milk blend called " karak ". It's blended with fresh Indian Cardamon and I'm pretty sure that the taste will be enjoyable and tasty. There is also indian bread called " Chapati " mixed with cheese if you wanted a quick snack. If you are going to shop in Harrods or just passing by knight bridge street don't forget to try it and you will not regret it

Yelp
Qatar! Woo hoo! I mean, how often do you go to a Qatari restaurant? So I kind of loved this place. The inattentive servers certainly weren't the reason for this five star review, but the cafe had two things I loved (karak and a cool table) and one I liked (chapati). We were lucky enough to get the one low table with pillows. You take off your shoes and basically sit on pretty pillows that are floor height. I thought our sweet chapati was bland at first, but maybe it was my piece. It's kind of like a flatbread baklava - but it really grew on me, and in the end I thought it was quite good. I absolutely LOVED the cardamom karak. It tasted like chai but lower in caffeine like black tea. More please!

Yelp
In the heart of Knightsbridge just a stone's throw from Harrod's is this gem of a place that serves up some damn good karak (milk tea with a choice of flavors). It reminded me of HongKong milk tea with with a Southeast Asian and middle eastern flair. They also serve "parathay" (classic flat bread) with different fillings. As one might suspect, in any given visit the customers are a blend of locals, Arabs and folks from the sub-continent. For those who are partial to sheesha (water-pipes) those are also available out in front of the cafe. Service was average with the waiter having trouble understanding English. This is a nice cafe with a tastefully done decor.

Yelp
Tasty chapati and karak. I got the soft cheese chapati and the cardamom karak. Whilst I think £5 for the chapati and £3 for the small karak is a bit too much, I can't complain on the flavors. The liquid, white cheese is mild and sweet with lots inside the chapati which is soft and tasty, like a flatter naan bread. The karak is spiced perfectly; like a more full-bodied chai tea latte.

Yelp
Now if you know what real Indian tea is, you're dying to have some and you don't mind forking out a bit more than you would from the homeland (India that is) for it, get here ASAP! Don't expect a phenomenal menu, they practically serve under 10 things but by George, I love this place! The only other one is all the way in Doha, Qatar, so if you're in the area, not popping in is completely your loss. Karak is basically very strong tea, boiled in a pot for pretty much.... forever. It's automatically sweet as they use evaporated or condensed milk (not sure which one, to be honest) and you have the choice of having it plain or with cardamom. There's also the choice of ginger, mint, green or red tea but that's all folks! This place is not meant for coffee seekers. As the name states, they also serve "Chapati" - not the standard Asian 'roti' kind though, it's more paratha like personally but you can have it plain so it's savoury or they'll add some sugar/honey to make it sweet (I recommend getting the sweet version). On top of that, the setting is real arabesque, perfect date spot I say ;)

Yelp
Cool little place that was recommended to us by some friends. Ordered a few different chapatis that were really good. Prices are reasonable and this place is a really fun little place to hang out.

Yelp
Delicious. Eat Chai I've ever had. And the chapati was delicious! Definitely busy and bustling so try call ahead but they were nice enough to squeeze us in!
google avatar

Ro D.

Yelp
Definitely the place to go if you're in the mood for some strong Arab style masala chai. It differs from the traditional Indian Chai as it uses condensed milk instead of whole milk so the Chai is a lot thicker. It comes in two sizes. The small was more than enough for me - might go for the large in the rainy winter when I need more warmth. Fun fact: this institution is owned/sponsored by the government of Qatar. The interiors are quite posh making for a great ambience. The chapati itself is pretty average (and not like an Indian chapati at all) and I wouldn't pay £5 for it again. But if Im craving a good milky spiced tea and reminiscing about the old Middle East days, I head over to C&K.

Yelp
We tried the Cardamom (£4) and Regular (£4) Karaks -- came very (too?) hot, but were delicious once we could sip them . We enjoyed them with a sweet chapati (£5), which was cut into 9 pieces and a good snack. (We enjoyed the drinks more than the chapati to be honest.) Staff are attentive and the space is quite decorative, including one wearing area for six where you can take your shoes off and sit on cushions. A nice place to take a breather!

Yelp
Karak tea is what i would get on long road trips to different towns and the roadside stalls would serve this super strong, tasty tea with milk and sugar. We were super excited to finally try this place where all they serve are teas and "chapati". The place was packed at 4:30 on a sunday so we got a text message when a table was ready for us (didnt hurt me because i went to reiss and shopped a bit!) When we got seated, the tea we ordered was the cardamom tea (our favorite flavor), although there were several others including one that had no additional flavor and ginger. I probably should have asked to have the tea without sugar so i could decide how sweet i wanted it but it was delicious nonetheless. We ordered a plain "chapati", which is actually a parantha, a layered bread with butter. delicious but i would say it was nothing out of the ordinary to me. The space had an interesting vibe to it and would be a good place to have a "tea" date given all they have on the menu is just that :) I will definitely go back and bring my family with me :)

Yelp
I went with ma friend for a midnight Karak, i liked the place as it was very traditional and it gives you the feeling of being in middle east. The service was very good and I dont mind of going there again.

Yelp
This is probably the best Chai I've ever tasted. Classy place with great service and excellent chapati, both sweet and savoury. This is not a gimmicky shop, it's the real deal. You know when you're the only white folks in the shop, that it's gonna be good.
google avatar

Taggi O.

Yelp
Good food BUT VERY BAD SERVICE you have to beg the waitress to be seated, clean the table and get the order while she is busy joking with the other behind the counter
google avatar

Jigmet Y.

Yelp
Nice ambience with a limited menu. The sweet chapati was nice but the cheese chapati was ok. Should have tried the Karak chai but definitely next time.
google avatar

Foodie R.

Yelp
This was a nice place to stop in and have an honest to goodness chai. The chappati was also delicious. It's a little elevated from the versions in the UAE but it is in Knightsbrige and if you're okay paying 4 pounds for chappati, this is a nice place. Still it was a filling small meal for me and a nice ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing brewed cardamom tea, add to that cheesy chapati. Loved it!!!
google avatar

Nitish K.

Yelp
Amazing karak which tastes like Indian chai, I was looking for a chai place and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Definitely recommend to people looking for Indian chai. I had the cardamom karak
google avatar

Yelp
Taste of karak is good but they sarve it in Plastic cups .. Which Got me chock about it ..

Yelp
I like this place. I don't come across Cardamom karak tea often. Here they have three versions . Sweeeet. And I mean literally. You have the option to sweeten yourself. Going for lunch or dinner next time. Great Arab atmospherics. Supposed to be second franchise of a Qatar operation. This one closer.

Ruha S.

Yelp
I was really excited to try it out thinking to myself finally there is a place which makes close enough to desi milky tea and looking at the menu had desi parathas in mind however I was very disappointed with the chapati definitely not worth £5 and ginger kark was way too strong for me. I don't think its worth another visit! Still in the hunt for some desi milky chai
