Best Texas Restaurants on the Drive Between Austin and Houston | Eater Austin

"In the mornings, travelers stop for Chappel Hill’s first-class kolaches. Later in the day, it’s all about the barbecue, sausages, and giant baked potatoes loaded up with meat. Either way, ice cream is always a good idea, and you can grab a bottle of jalapeno ketchup as a take-home souvenir. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Very disappointed. We placed our order at 9:17am. We saw other customers receiving their orders that came after us. So by 9:50am we asked about our order which seemed to have not been given to the kitchen. My husband decided we should just cancel our order because we had waited so long. When we asked the cashier to refund our order she nor her coworker knew how to do the process... Then my husband saw they finally bringing our order so we decided to just stay and eat since the cashier couldn't refund our order. We should had just left the food wasn't the best. We were so excited to stop and eat here but turned out to be a bad experience.

I went here for lunch with my coworker on the way back to Houston from Austin. They have a great selection of packaged seasoned meats and sausage as well as jars of pickled items and jams/dips. The prices on those items were very reasonable. I had the two BBQ meats plate with brisket, ribs, twice baked potato and jalapeno bacon Mac and cheese. This cost around 19 dollars and the food was very good. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was good. The only negatives were that there were a couple of flies buzzing around near the food (not much you can do about that honestly), the men's room wasn't that clean and I saw an employees exit the bathroom without washing his hands.

Juan J H.

Google
I did order several kinds of cinnamon rolls. With a name  " cinnamon roll" You would have thought you would get an abundance of cinnamon flavor. Today was not the case. Also using a microwave did not enhance the flavor or texture of the roll. Either I got a bad batch or the cinnamon was old or on the shelf too long. Either way, I will be coming back this way and we'll give it a try again.

Google
Food was good. Broccoli could have been better. Staff was friendly. The men's bathroom was not clean. Smelled like a bar. Asked for the $12.95 special but was told that it ended at 4:00. The sign says nothing about that.

mike P.

Google
Prices were very good. Pork chops, see photo, was $12.95!!!!! BBQ was very good. They had a lot of fresh meet for sale

Google
Loved the place and convenient for as a truck driver, they let you stay over night safe place. And the food delicious 😍 YUM!

Google
Great bbq, great sides. Would come here again when passing through town. Spacious atmosphere w/ dessert options.

Google
We stopped in Chappell Hill Barbeque Bakery on Saturday afternoon, December 27, 2025. The line was short and we got our BBQ sandwiches in no time. My wife ordered the fried okra from the kitchen and it too was ready very quick. We both had lean sliced beef brisket sandwiches and the meat was abundant, smokey, and tender as can be! The sadwiches are a decent size too, so we were satisfied, until we saw the bakery counter, then we had to have some dessert! I definitely recommend Chappell Hill Barbeque Bakery, and anytime I'm passing through Chappell Hill, I'll be stopping and eating BBQ!

Yelp
We were traveling through Chappell Hill and decided to stop by this establishment. As always, we looked at the menu and reviews. There are mixed reviews even for the loaded baked potatoes. How can that be??? So we ordered a loaded baked potato that was extremely fully loaded. I mean this thing was huge like 3 meals big (Wednesday special too). When you go try: Jalapeno mac and cheese. (OUTSTANDING); Baked potato casserole (AWESOME); During our travels, we used to drive by this place. Now it is a must-stop for lunch place.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
The spare rib plate was very good. They give you big portions on your plate.Plus, plenty of desserts to choose from. We have been there more than once and will probably go back.

Yelp
Friendly service from beginning to end. I enjoyed the fresh bread. I cannot wait to try more.
google avatar

Ardara H.

Yelp
Old town feel at the entrance with country music upon entry. Had the brisket sandwich with a lean touch. The sandwich is hearty and may require for you to take the remainder home. They have a vast amount of desserts as well and a nice breakfast selection. The associate were not super inviting but well at their occupation. The service is exact, they started lunch at exactly 10:30AM, no bulging on the time for even a second, lol.

Yelp
Though the Chappell Hill Bakery & Deli is not what one would refer to as a convenient place to dine, I have enjoyed the food so much that my family has sometime made the hour journey to get their barbeque. Located in Chappell Hill close to a lot of wineries, it is a great place to stop before or after spending some time at a winery or just making the trip to have dinner. Their meat selection is always tasty and there isn't one of their sides that I do not enjoy. If you are a fan of spicy food, definitely try their jalapeno mac and cheese! After enjoying your meal, stop by the bakery counter and try a tasty piece of pie. Definitely worth the trip to Chappell Hill.

Yelp
Great stop over between Houston and Austin. It's a deli. It's a bakery. It's a butcher shop! It's a cafe. They have sandwiches, burgers, full steak dinner plates, bbq plates, bbq potatoes ( hint: get the 2 meat loaded potatoe). They have pies, baked goods, kolaches, coffee, cookies, ... you name it! Oh and they have all sorts of preserves. It is a grand little cozy place to shake your legs and enjoy good food. Chappell Hill, nicely done!!!

Justin T.

Yelp
Friendly customer service, great atmosphere and the kolaches and muffins are really good.

Jonathan H.

Yelp
Really disappointed. I've driven by this place for 20+ years as I come and go out of Houston. This time, I decided to stop. The brisket didn't taste smoked at all. No crust, barely a smoke ring. The sausage was solid, but not worth the stop. Only ham/cheese and sausage/cheese kolaches were in stock I was hoping for something better than bucees bbq, but this was not up to the average standard of bucees. Huge disappointment
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little place to stop it. When you're driving through you can get special little things. The food is okay. The service is okay. The ambiance is great. It's like a huge barn

Todd B.

Yelp
Great place to stop for breakfast or lunch in the restaurant or stock up on those smoked sausage they have fresh in the deli case or vacuumed packaged along with a wide variety of steaks, chops and bacon they have on the bakery side. And let's not forget the fresh baked pies, breads and OMG the kolachies are made with that famous Chaple hill sausage! Delicious!
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Stopped in for some baked goods and breakfast items. While I waited at the counter for service I noticed just how dirty the baked goods case was as I took video of selections. I did end up buying a variety of items but many went into the trash hours later. This seems like a huge missed opportunity to serve locals and travelers alike. We will be sourcing baked goods for ourselves and guests elsewhere.

Yelp
First of all: Service is amazing!! The young man that took my order was switching from breakfast to lunch and acknowledged me and said he'd be with me in a second (I hate when folks ignore you until they're ready) he gave me the fatty parts like I asked and was super sweet. Now to this deliciousness!!! It was super juicy and I low key don't think I needed to ask for the fatty parts because the whole thing looked nice and juicy/tender as he was slicing it. It was delicious!!! The bread was good (I usually don't eat the bread) the sauce; I got on the side in case it needed it...it didn't but the meat could've used a little more flavor (smoky) or seasonings. But I still tore it up and would definitely recommend and return!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The pies in the bakery are delicious and reasonably priced (for these days anyway) You can also pick up Chappell Hill sausages and pickles and such as well.
google avatar

mary c.

Yelp
Great tasting sides and plenty of desserts to choose from. Came here specifically to try a kolache (the sweet kind). The poppyseed and strawberry cream cheese flavors were delicious, but wasn't too impressed overall. The place is huge, but during a late weekday lunch visit the whole vibe of the place was off.
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
Typically really good food from pleasant individuals, but NOT TODAY! The hubbs went in to pick up their amazing stuffed pork chops (cook yourself) from the refrigerated meat section, but they were out, so he picked up the non-stuffed, seasoned pork chops instead. When he took them up to the counter to pay, the person at the register asked if he found everything alright. My husband answered, "I was looking for your stuffed pork chops, but I guess you're all out?", then the cashier sarcastically replied, "That's unfortunate." Then rings up the tab and slams the chops on the counter in a bag - - Unprofessional and rude. We enjoy and appreciate above average local food as well as service and hope this review will be taken seriously by the owner/manager to address the issue.

Gary H.

Yelp
Food is NOT what it use to be. Catfish was not cook very well...mushy with gray meat. The brisket is pitiful. This place use to have very good Q. This was my place to stop in Chappell Hill but no more. The kids running the place now act like they are doing you a favor to serve you. I guess Covid did the place in. My LAST visit was May 24,2024
google avatar

Yelp
Pralines are awesome. BBQ was good. Didn't like the BBQ sauce though. Service was excellent...cafeteria style line. Big place.

Yelp
Nice restaurant and bakery right on 290 in Chappel Hill with its own dedicated parking lot. On the left is the restaurant and the right the bakery. The restaurant is counter service and features all of the standard bbq meats and sides along with other veggies and non-bbq entrees as well. I visited for lunch on a weekday and was feeling their hamburger steak for $14.99. It is a special order item cooked in the kitchen and takes about 15-20 minutes to arrive. I chose mashed potatoes and gravy and their baked beans as my 2 sides. Yes it took 15 minutes for the food to be delivered to my table. The meat, onions and gravy were good in taste. The mashed potatoes were loaded with a white gravy and I liked them. The beans weren't your traditional baked bean type. These were lighter in color and looked more like ham hock and beans. Even though they looked and tasted different I enjoyed them too. I like this restaurant and will remember it whenever I am driving through on 290.

Yelp
We don't go through Chappell Hill often, but when we do, we always stop here to get kolaches to put in the freezer. I bought 2 dozen sausage, cheese and jalapeño kolaches on Jan 20, 24 and they were absolutely awful! My husband eats anything and he even spit it out. ‍ What a waste of money!!
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
Outstanding. Hope they never get swept up in modernism BS. Place rocks. Outstanding kolaches, pralines, etc., made with country love. A feel good stop on way between HTX & ATX.
google avatar

Shirley P.

Yelp
We have been here SO many times and everything has always been AMAZING, until today. We ordered a rib plate, a sliced brisket plate and a baked potato. The ribs were good! The mac & cheese was extremely DRY, all stuck together and not good at all. Usually it is super juicy and super delicious. The baked potato was so hard you couldn't even stir it up and it had cold cheese on it. Our okra was on point! We are just extremely disappointed as we drive 40 minutes 1 way to eat here.

Jesse T.

Yelp
All there Bakery pastries are old and stale.. I've tried them a few times but no more dry and nasty.. never going back ever . Keep going save your money. Yuck
google avatar

Billy S.

Yelp
It may not be the BEST BBQ in the world, but it is consistently very good -- That's a whole lot better than going to a place, getting great service and great food, taking friends there with you, and getting a bad experience. Consistently very good - never had a bad meal or bad experience.
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
Great early spring day with some Lima beans that make me think of my Grandmother. All of their food was stellar with great ambiance: great quality, plentiful portions, southern hospitality.

Meares R.

Yelp
Ribs and brisket are average at best. Below average is probably more accurate. The sides were inedible. We tried four different sides, and all were flavorless except for the oddly chemical taste. The potatoes were definitely old. The staff seem to tolerate a customer's presence and nothing more. First and last visit.

Yelp
Very nice little place to grab food in Chappell Hill. They are taking safety and COVID precautions seriously, which was really important to us. We were even able to grab a table outside on the front porch to eat! I was so sad to find out that they stopped serving breakfast at 10:30 am. We were still able to grab some delicious kolaches though! Everything we had from the bakery was delicious. The attached BBQ restaurant looked and smelled pretty good too. There were so many options - we will definitely have to try it again the next time we are in town!

Yelp
During our road trip today we stopped here for lunch. This was a great idea. This place was huge. 1/2 was the bakery and the other half was the restaurant. We had a hard time deciding what to order, BBQ, pork chops, burger etc... We ended up with a BBQ sliced beef sandwich and baked potato casserole. Hubby's side was cole slaw. The sandwiches were great. The bun was homemade and very fresh, the BBQ was tender and fell apart. The potato casserole & the cole slaw were good not great. We looked at the desserts and it was incredibly hard to pass them up but we were to full. The desserts cabinets had everything you could imagine. Pies (whole and slices), cookies, brownies, kolaches(),cinnamon rolls, empanadas. And if you want any kind of homemade jellies, pickled veggies this is your place. They even had fresh meats and some marinated as well. We will definitely eat here again and pick up some great kolaches. Love a great kolache!

Cindy W.

Yelp
This is a "must" visit place! We started out on the bakery side, an amazing assortment of pies, pastries, fresh breads and Kolaches! Went to the deli side and got a 3 meat lunch with 2 sides. Brisket tender no smoke on it but flavor was good. Ribs were a little tough, but my preference is fall off the bone, jalapeño sausage was amazing but not spicy. BBQ sauce is thicker and not sweet, but very good. Side of rice and beans were good also. Nice place to sit and eat, clean and rustic. Service via the walk up counters was fast and friendly! We will return! Oh and options on deli bar is much more than BBQ.

Brenda C.

Yelp
The bbq was barely palatable. Best thing on the brisket plate was the yeast roll. Don't stop here for the bbq nor the bbq sauce. Instead, go for the bakery items.

Yelp
We had an overall good experience last week. My main complaint was the young man taking our order. He was clearly annoyed to be at work that day and he was making sure customers knew. He had an overall sour attitude for someone who works interacting with people. The young man at the cash register was the total opposite with a very warm and welcoming personality. Sadly, I didn't get the name of either one. As for the food, we were all very happy with our choices. I have to say they have one of the best briskets I've had. Hands down better than the brisket at the overpriced Cattleman's Steak House near El Paso, TX. I also ordered a coconut cream pie, which was very rich in flavor but a little too high on the sugar. They also have a very large selection of grass fed beef and poultry at very competitive prices. Will definitively go back!
google avatar

Crystal R.

Yelp
We have stopped here a few times on the way to Austin. We get the 1 and 2 meat plates normally. I suggest the moist/fatty brisket to make sure it's not dry. The flavor is great! And why I give it a 4 instead of a 3. The ribs are ok. Not a ton of meat and not moist but flavor was ok. Sides are also pretty good. The baked beans had a different flavor than normal but the more I ate them the better they got. The "creamed" corn wasn't what I'm used to either. It was more of regular corn. The bakery on the other hand!!! So good! Honestly, the cookies are some of the best cookies I've had, especially if you like soft cookies. They have everything from Blue Bell ice scream to pies, cookies, brownies and even kolaches for morning snacks. The place is clean and lots of seating area. Always a good stop!
google avatar

Tommy S.

Yelp
We stopped by for kolache and bakery items. We ordered a piece of spicy sausage and cheese kolache and a couple of their poppyseed rolls plus a fountain drink. Kolache was alright the bread was great but we felt the sausage was a bit different to our liking. The poppy seed rolls were phenomenal, sweet but not too sweet. They were soft and just right. The service was ok -- courteous but not that friendly. Price was $10.25 for everything. Over all rating is 4-star due to how great the poppy seed rolls were

Yelp
Giving this review because the "manager" Rico (I believe that's his name) needs a BIG lesson in customer service and how to respond to questions. I am a part of a large cycling group who was patronizing the restaurant after our ride. I asked if the BBQ baked potato would really take 20 minutes. He was the guy cutting the meat. He said something like "maybe. And if it does, I'm sorry." in an arrogant/ cocky tone and then says something about the time is more of a safety... Rude response in a condescending tone, to where my friend said to him "Dude, that's really how you are going to respond?" I wanted to speak to the real manager but was told it was him. Sad. Learn to go the extra mile and take a reputable customer service course immediately , Rico --or whatever your name is.

Jon F.

Yelp
Very good. Service is fast and curdious. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. Reasonably priced.
google avatar

vonnie v.

Yelp
First time eating here. 2 stars because when we ordered the sliced beef sandwich and asked for the point the server told us "no, that's for the chopped beef" in a rude manner. Every bbq place ALWAYS asks the customer " Moist or lean?" The slices my bf got were dry. Mine were tender but I just prefer burnt ends. The jalapeño Mac and cheese was good though and the young man at the cash register was nice and friendly.*rude server guy sounds like the same rude, arrogant, cocky guy mentioned in previous reviews*
google avatar

Sylvia C.

Yelp
Love their cinnamon roll and kolache sausage rolls. The store is clean and the customer service was great. Next time I would like to try their bbq sandwich plates.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
BBQ is usually not my thing, but I had heard nothing but good things about this Chappell Hill Bakery days maybe weeks leading up to my visit. Absolutely no one lied to me! Their reputation precedes them. We were on a wine tour this was the lunch which was included. They recommended the Jalapeno Mac n cheese. They have regular Mac and cheese too but have the one with spice. Soft warm rolls, Mashed potatoes, and Jalapeno Sausage filled me to the max. Ate every last bite until I could barely get up. So easy to order, gigantic menu on wall, lunch line style, you see the items you want, pick your meats then your sides. Refillable drink stations. Clean up after your self, put your trash and tray in the appropriate place on your way out. Saved the prepackaged beef jerky for later, but my kids wanted more!
google avatar

Missy L.

Yelp
Went in this morning and Anna made for me a fresh pot of decaf coffee. The pecan praline and kolache's are awesome! If I'm the area or just passing through town stop here and enjoy! They also make homemade fresh pie!!!'
google avatar

Rex C.

Yelp
Typically every time when I go to Austin I stop at Chappell Hill bakery and deli. Let me tell you what they do an amazing job with their kolache. Not sure if I even spelled that right. They are amazing, do yourself a favor and stop on in and get you some of their sweet pastries. They also have really good sharp cheddar cheese. They have amazing homemade pralines. They have some really good brisket sandwiches as well. They have all types of treats U can pick up for the holidays, or for aunt Susie, or for the office, or for simply snacking on the road while driving Austin. How could I forget their pies, they have so many different pies you can choose from. They do such a great job with your pies. Do you self a favor and come on in This is always been one of my favorite stops, the people here are extremely nice and they go out of their way to take care of you. Basically some good old Texas hospitality Thanks again Chapel Hill for always being a great place to stop when on the road.
google avatar

Brooke S.

Yelp
Good BBQ right on the side of the road. Brisket and sausage were good. And the ribs were great. The sides were hit or miss--potato salad and mashed potatoes were bland, but the baked beans and Mac n cheese were good. The bakery us a nice touch to get pie or sweets on your way out.

Gayle W.

Yelp
We come here after church on Saturday nights. We don't care for their barbecue but their steaks and breakfast are so good. We usually share one of their steak specials and still usually have leftovers. They toast the inside of their biscuits, so their biscuits and gravy are the best for a hang with you breakfast
google avatar

Kristen N.

Yelp
If I could bottle the smell when you walk in I would!!! Oh my! Their food smells delicious! We stopped in to grab a loaf of their bread and what a great little stop! Cute deli, bakery, and BBQ "joint". They have an amazing selection of jams, jellies, pickled stuff....lots of sausage (even chicken and venison)! I grabbed some turkey jerky which is usually very hard to find and some smoked sharp cheese! Can't wait to try it! The breads are also delicious!!!
google avatar

Mar O.

Yelp
En route to Austin we swung by this local bakery & deli. One side is a bbq restaurant and the other side is a bakery/deli. We only tried the bakery area. It was delicious! Highly recommend the poppyseed rolls and pecan cinnamon buns. Will definitely stop by every time I pass through town.
google avatar

Audra O.

Yelp
We stopped in on our road trip. The brisket was amazing. The staff was super friendly. We enjoyed it and bought a pie to bring home. Definitely worth the stop.

Lorna M.

Yelp
Large selection of bakery items to enjoy and BBQ meats were delicious. It's a clean farm to table environment.
google avatar

Anthony R.

Yelp
Had the rib plate and CFS . There was more steak than breading which was great. Most of the time tou end up with a paper thin piece of meat and ton of breading. The venison and beef summer sausage was great.
google avatar

Echo L.

Yelp
I ordered one prune kolache, one sticky bun, and one poppyseeds rolls. Honestly the prune kolache did not meet my expectations. I only ate the part covered with sugar glaze and/or the fruit, bc the dough was a bit dry and tasteless. Poppyseeds roll was okay. The sticky bun was really good. It's not overly sweet and I really enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's just say I was highly disappointed! I heard about this place from a friend that says he goes here pretty often and that they have good BBQ. Read reviews and they are mixed so I decided to go and see for myself. First of all we walked in and the place looked clean and nice. However, the employees didn't look to happy, like they didn't like their job or glad to have a job. Looks on their faces seems like they couldn't wait to close and go home. I ordered brisket plate and my wife ordered fully loaded tater. Brisket was dry and tasted just OK, sauce was not good odd flavor could not figure out what was off about it but I was not a BBQ sauce you typically get at a BBQ place and the sides were also just OK I rate this place 4 out of 10. I have had a lot of BBQ in my life and this is not a very good place for BBQ. If anyone in the area has heard of County line BBQ in Waller, will say they have pretty good taters and BBQ. let's just say county line BBQ makes this place look like McDonalds that sells a McRib and calls it BBQ. I guess I am kinda of spoiled having had great BBQ in different cities in Texas and smoke my own ribs and brisket also. I don't suggest anyone wanting really good real pit bbq to try this place I don't think this was a fluke, my experience lines up with a few of the other bad reviews so I think they are pretty accurate.

Yelp
I've been here twice now, on the recommendation of a friend. The first time the food was just, eh. We had brisket and regular sausage and loaded mashed potatoes. We went again about 5 months later, thinking maybe they were just having an off day. Nope,it was underwhelming. This time we shared a chicken fried steak sandwich, a regular sausage link with bbq sauce, a side of loaded mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese. The sausage was alright, the sauce has no flavor and seemed like it needed to be blended more. We added salt, pepper, and two packets of mustard and that made it tolerable. Originally it tasted like lemon, vinegar, and ketchup. Both the sides needed salt and pepper to bring out the flavor. The stand out was the chicken fried steak. They forgot to add the lettuce and tomato but the steak itself was really good. What stands out overwhelmingly is the customer service. Everyone looks so unhappy! No smiles, barely any eye contact. It looks like no one cares. This extended to the dry, crusty cinnamon roll and the obviously dehydrator-produced jerky which held not even a whisper of smoke, odd, considering they fancy themselves a BBQ restaurant. We were super curious why large cubes of brisket sat out in the open on a cutting board on the counter. "A Meat market" should display better food safety handling than this. We're just glad our shared sadness only set us back $30.00. You can't say we didn't give it a second chance.
