The 35 Essential São Paulo Restaurants

"While most contemporary Brazilian restaurants focus on the northern regions of the country (especially the Amazon), chef Tuca Mezzomo turns his eyes to the south, where his roots are. The region is best known for its gaúcho culture, which produced the Brazilian-style barbecue that has spread around the world. But Mezzomo proves that there is much more to showcase from the region with his tasting menu, including lightly smoked mushrooms, delicate vegetables, and southern-style charcuterie (kept in a temperature-controlled room) such as umami-rich wagyu bresaola. There are also a la carte options for more relaxed dinners." - Rafael Tonon

Charco

"Despite its compact size, this restaurant in the Jardins district not far from Parque Trianon, is very welcoming with its small terrace and rustic-contemporary interior. Chef Tuca Mezzomo, a young gaucho from the Río Grande do Sul region, focuses on grill-based cuisine that showcases products and ingredients from different parts of Brazil. Guests are able to discover the large variety of flavours that this country has to offer through his dishes. As an added bonus, Charco even cures its own meats." - Michelin Inspector

Thank you for a wonderful evening at your restaurant. The food and cocktails were delicious, the location really nice, the staff and service very friendly. The food wasn’t only very good, it also looked so nice. Every dish has a special combination of ingredients.

Visited for lunch on our last day in São Paulo and was the best meal we had on our entire trip.

BY FAR, the best meal I had in Brazil during my 3 week trip this year. I went to a few Michelin-starred spots, and Charco outshined them all. Everything was absolutely delicious. We ordered ala carte and I'm glad we did because every single one of our server's recommendations was incredible. We started with the Cotecchino, the shrimp toast, and the heart of palm with caviar. All were absolutely delicious, but the shrimp toast stood out the most to me because I've never had anything like that in my life. Then we had the black pork loin and the grilled cut of the day, which was an ancho ribeye. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavor of the grill was present and spectacular. The Ancho was not too fatty and was complimented well by its veggies. We then split both the milk and honey and the tahini ice cream dish for dessert. Both were complex, delicious, and not overwhelmingly sweet. I preferred the tahini ice cream dish, but I'm glad we also tried the milk and honey because of its complexity-- it was a cerebral experience. It was the perfect amount of food for two people, and it was truly an amazing culinary experience. Raul was a fantastic server, made great recommendations for both food and wine, and spoke perfect English which was an added benefit so we could better understand what we were eating. I will be back! Highly recommend!

One of the best restaurants ever. Loved everything. Great mussels, bread and butter, the pork was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the dessert was just amazing. On top of that the venue was cozy and the waiters super friendly and efficient. Nice local and Latin American wines selection. Great coffee too. A must in Sao Paulo!

Charco is a restaurant we were planning to visit for a while. It was highly recommended by friends and it’s getting good reviews since its opening. It was awarded with one star by Michelin in 2020. And all good critics came for a good reason: Charco is an excellent restaurant. The grill is the center of the menu and the dishes are always surrounding the fire. Their Black Pork loin is excellent. The chef also prepares an assortment of homemade cured meats that are a must try! Their smoked ham is something special. The desserts are prepared by the chefs wife and are very creative using Brazilian and fresh ingredients. The chef offers a daily 9 course menu with his selection of their best dishes. I’ve found Charco’s prices very reasonable for the quality of the experience. Something rare in São Paulo where restaurants tend to put prices in the skies as soon as they get a positive review. Highly recommended.

Awesome experience, loved everthing about the degustation menu (320$) Very enjoyable again in '24 (now 350). The fish could be more interesting, and the beef sauce seemed too strong. Otherwise very good, strong desserts and appetizers.

This was my second and last time at this restaurant, although the food was good the first time this second time was a major downgrade. The angus tasted like a low quality slab of meat, the duck tasted old and stale with no distinctive flavor. The patatoes were salted with a full can of salt and the sparkling water was stale and old. Totally not worth the price. The service came multiple times to ask if we want to order additional food to the point where it was almost obnoxious. Would not recommend to go there.

We went there on Tuesday at 19:00, in January, 2023 Around 20:00, it was almost full. Their table was limited, So, you must make a reservation. We ordered tasting menu 310 BRL and 190 wine tasting per person. They served excellent quality cuisine and rare wines made in Rio Grande do Sul. It was good harmony and great opportunity for us to know more sophisticated Brazilian foods.
