Charles & Larry Review - Sweetwater - Miami - The Infatuation

"Sweetwater might not be known for having the most Venezuelan restaurants in Miami, but that just means the decision to come to this casual spot will be easier. The walls are covered with enough graffiti to keep you entertained while you wait for your super-crispy-outside, soft-inside empanadas—some of the best you'll find in Miami. They've also got arepas, cachapas, hot dogs, and colita raspados (ask for one if you don’t see it on the menu—they have them behind the counter). " - Julia Malavé

Love this place! Been coming here for years and it never disappoints. Great prices for big portions which taste amazing! Karina is the sweetest and so caring! Definitely make sure to check them out!

Google
I had an amazing experience at this Venezuelan restaurant! The service was excellent—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious, with authentic flavors that truly represent Venezuelan cuisine. Everything was fresh and well-prepared, making it a memorable dining experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy great food and great service!

Google
Food so good you’ll want to come back. This restaurant is a testament to the maracuchos. Had the arepa cabimera mixta with pernil and chicken for almost $20, weighing almost a pound. Also ordered a side of the mini empanadas which turned out to be a great appetizer.

Google
I went today for my first time and I absolutely loved this place. I love the Venezuelan aesthetic of the restaurant I think it’s super cute. In addition, the service was amazing. The lady was super kind and helpful. Lastly, the food was 10/10. I had an arepa and I can definitely say it’s one of the best arepas I’ve had.

Been coming here for around a year now and it never disappoints! The food is always delicious and the service is usually exceptional. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some good food

Google
I just had the most amazing tender loin burger. WOW!! I love this place. Great food, even better service. They make you feel like If they have known you for ever. Gleicy was awesome, friendly and kind. I highly recommend Chrles y Larry. Don't forget to ask for the free raspado.

Google
I decided to try this place based on all the good reviews and I was not disappointed. The customer service is just amazing. As soon as you get there you’re greeted with a warm smile. The food was really good and the portions are big and fair price. I totally recommend.

Google
I really enjoy this place, not only the setting and the familiar treatment you receive, but of course the food, is not just Venezuelan food is good from Maracaibo my home town. I tried a little bit of everything and I am glad I did because everything was perfect, the food was tasty, fresh and hot. I can certified it is authentic food! Price wise it was fair enough, obviously it is a bit expensier than local American food, but compare with other Venezuelan places it was a good price. The staff was very nice and attentive, I had a great time. I will definitely go back as much as I can 😁

Yelp

Yelp
One of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given. This is hands down the best Venezuelan food I've had in the US. When I say they pack flavor, I mean it! Their sampler platter has so many delicious items like tequeños, fried plantains, fried potatoes, and empanadas. You have to use their garlic and cilantro creamy sauce on all of it! Their arepas are out of this world. The flavor is barely contained in the big portion of food. Wrapped in a fried corn "bread," the shredded beef and tons of cheese just melts within. They give pico de gallo on the side and you need to add both that and the creamy garlic sauce on it! Their burgers are also very popular. It's such a massive burger that could easily feed 2 people. The workers/owners are amazing. So friendly and personable, and everyone who walks in feels welcome. They even took photos and tagged us on their Instagram story! Really amazing experience from start to finish. I will say that parking is a pain. Very few limited spots are available.

Yelp
Really good food and great service. We loved the hamburger and the arepas. My son loved trying chicha for the first time and he loved the cheese empanada. Beautiful place!

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend and wow what an experience. The service was fast and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. My friend and I order the "Servicio de Empanaditas" as an appetizer which are mini empanadas that are mixed between, chicken, beef and cheese I believe. Five come in total and they were some of the best empanadas I've had, especially when you take a bite with the white sauce provided. We then ordered the "Patacón," I got the one with carne mechada and my friend ordered it with pork. The pork was not too seasoned but still good, as for the carne, it was delicious, I couldn't get enough. I would recommend getting the yellow plantain for the top and bottom pieces as they ask green or yellow; the yellow is the sweet, softer kind. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp

Yelp
Just... no. My colleuge ordered the burger, which looked looked like a big gloopy and sloppy mess, and certainly not $16 worth. I ordered the sampler, also $16, which is esssntially a couple pieces of fried bread and cheese made in three different ways. Food doesn't even come on ceramic plates, they serve it on disposable paper plates. If what my colleuge and I ordered wasn't $16 that may be acceptable, but to charge these prices while not having a care for presentation and plating of food is ridiculous. I will not be returning any time soon.

Yelp

Yelp
Located in a two story strip mall, extremely small. Very limited parking. Once you walk in there are max 10 small tables and a small bar side with high stools. The service was great and the FOOD was incredible. We tried one of their samplers which brought 2 tequeños, 2 arepas, 2 empanadas de pollo, 2 mandocas and shredded cheese with cream. Later we tried the Patacón with maduro (fried plantain), with steak, cabbage, tomato, ketchup, ham, cheese and their house sauce. I promise it is big enough for two. It was so so so so soooooo good! Everything is a la carte, so if you would like fries you will need to order as a side. They serve everything on cardboard plates, and with plastic utensils. I think that is amazing, saves them cleaning time. Prices are not bad. Will come back to try some more.

Yelp
The restaurant is another "OK" option of Venezuelan food, But service is very very bad.

Yelp

Yelp
Best tequenos in Miami hands down. I am from LA and this place is my favorite to visit and get tequenos when I'm in town. I also tried their Cesar salad and it was great. Big size, lots of chicken and it was very filling. The vibe is also great here. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
The best hamburgers in town PERIOD!! service is top and variety of dishes amazing. This is a real hidden gem!!!

Yelp

Felix M.

Yelp
Food reheated. My arepa was hard as hell which means old. But the worse part is the prices ridiculously high for traditional and not elaborated food, they have the guts to ask for four dollars for a papelon con limon in a 8 ounces styrofoam cup full of ice. A toston overheated and overcooked an almost nine dollars for five small tequeños . Exactly the place for never go again, no wonder we were the only clients at 7:00 pm.

Al S.

Yelp
Food was good but service was very shady. The waitress conveniently forgot to mention they charge a service fee if more than 3 people dine. And since they do not give you a paper receipt and do payment with a tablet; she simply reads off what you ordered and doesn't mention the extra service fee. So naturally as a customer you tip. Because of the service fee I ended up tipping $42. $18 service fee and 20% tip realized it after paying after it sends text message with receipt. Thought that was extremely disingenuous of the waitress not to mention it. So beware if you go here Last time I will go there. It's a shame that's how they do business to earn extra tips.

Yelp
First of I found the place smelly and poor maintenance. Ambiance there was none at least when I went there. It was basically empty and I just wanted to walk away. Food was awful! I would not recommend this restaurant ever.
google avatar

Albert R.

Yelp
This place is so overpriced. I asked for two burgers And what I got was two sloppy Joe's. I had to eat burgers literally with a fork it was so messy. Never again. I'm not a chef but they need to work on the food before they charge a premium on a burger .

Yelp
Charles and Larry Is awesome, I always come here late nights for snacks. They have phenomenal Venezuelan food here, and most definitely my favorite tequenos in South Florida. The service is always phenomenal too, the staff is very efficient, kind, and attentive, which is something I love. It's a perfect late night spot or just in general if your craving Venezuelan food thats made right and with alot of great flavor. They have all the classics, Mandocas, tequenos, toston, etc. and some delicious looking loaded burgers. I recommend of course the tequenos, they have salsa verde on the table that is strong in flavor and delicious. I have yet to try the other items like the burgers and other snacks, but you better believe I will come back for them. Overall a really consistently great spot, If your in the area I highly recommend giving it a try, I will be back!

Joe M.

Yelp
The best burger I have ever had, no joke. It was filled with quedo de mano, repollo, American cheese, ham, and meat. The amount of flavor that was inside that burger is astounding. The chicha is also the best in Miami. Creamy, cinnamon-y, sweet but not overwhelming, it's the perfect pairing to basically any food. It's even good on its own as a dessert. I highly recommend everyone, especially Venezuelans!!, come here. You won't regret it
google avatar

Yelp
BEST VENEZUELAN FOOD EVER!!! it's a small hole in the wall cozy place that makes you feel just like home. The service is superb and you can always count on having a laugh or two with there employees. Very down to earth people! And don't even get me started about the food!! When I tell you I order at least once a week from this place I'm not kidding. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! My go to is the pastel de carne and the arepa de carne asada! It's honestly so fresh and warm it'll make you go back to it every time. Im not even Venezuelan and I prefer this over my own country's food anyone who's down to try something new and homey I recommend this place
google avatar

Yelp
Went last Sunday. Amazing service but tables are not six feet apart and no one is wearing a mask at the tables. Food was good but the three of us got food poisoning after having burgers. So for that, my one star and my good bye.
google avatar

Jose A.

Yelp
Trying this secret spot of Maracucho's food. Its awesome, if you are close to this area you must try the Pastelitos (meat and potatos & cheese) and don't forget to ask for the Garlic sauce to pair it The Cruzado soup was very good but i think they only serve it on weekends I'll come back to try the burgers and the Torpedos The services is the best part of this place

Misael L.

Yelp

Yelp
I'm always suspicious of places that have 5 star ratings and yet I'm still willing to try them out for myself. That was the case here. I knew I'd be trying their "highly acclaimed" burgers, but I didn't expect to get sick after eating it! From the moment I walked in I didn't get a pleasant aroma, almost like a sewage smell. The server was late getting to our table so a gentleman that was eating had to get up and bring us menus and some beverages. After placing our orders consisting of a Burger and an Arepa we noticed that our server was extremely sick and it was very noticeable. The service was very blah as was the food. In my opinion under no circumstance should you only place 1 strip of bacon on a burger! That's an automatic FAIL in my book. Also a burger shouldn't be cooked well done, but I suppose when you're using subpar beef you have to make sure you kill all that bacteria by cooking the hell out of it! The fries were basic, frozen room temperature fires and the Arepa was nothing special. The bill was over 20$ and it included some severe headache and stomach pains later that day. I would not return or recommend them at all!!

Yelp
The food: This review is after my first visit so I've only tried one thing so far. Their "Charles & Larry Burger was delicious! It had tons of cheese, giant onion rings and a really good house sauce. They have a pretty diverse menu so its going to take a while to try everything and honestly I can't wait. The service: They are reaaally friendly here. Talked to one of the owners and some of the staff greeted me, they get an A+ in this department. The location: It's modest in size, they have a bar with some basic beers, plenty of TV's and giant blackboard wall with drawings of Venezuela's map and their important landmarks which is pretty cool. ***For anyone looking for the locations, Yelps and Google's maps will put it on the corner of 107th & Flagler in the Holiday Plaza, that's INCORRECT. It's actually half a block east in a little shopping center between McDonald's and Chevron.***

Yelp
I just ate in another Venezuelan food place and yikes! I think I have eaten Venezuelan food in every place in Miami that offers it but Charles & Larry definetly the best. Portion wise, friendly prices, very filling and they never forget to add silverware, napkins and the SAUCES! Oh my the sauces, what's an empanada without salsa de ajo? Nothing!! My staple and go to won't spend my money in any other place.

Yelp
I was hungry after watching a movie at Dolphin and after a quick search on Yelp, I found Charles & Larry. I'm not big on eating late, but I'm glad I did. The servers, the relaxed atmosphere, the staff, everything was awesome. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Nazair L.

Yelp
I love Charles & Larry and can't shut up about it. The menu items were really good and the prices are really affordable. I am really glad that we bought Mandocas, this was one of their finest dishes, extremely flavorful and delicious. I became good friends with the staff, who are all fantastic and super welcoming. I'm going back this weekend, can't wait!

Yelp
This is a place that i won't go again first of all what arepa joint does not have reina pepiada are you serious? Almost 30 minutes for 3 arepas? The filling of the arepa was fine but. NOt the arepa itself, the price was ok So if you have time to waste and want a mediocre arepa go ahead and go to this place i wont

Ana I.

Yelp
Love Venezuelan food but definitely have had better. Ordered parilla mixta for 2 with the meat medium rare which I like but the meat was still too raw. A lot of food & prices aren't that bad. Was seated all the way by the bathroom in the back although we were the only other people there with other plenty of tables, unable to be seen & the servers forgot we were there.

Mufid J.

Yelp
Food was okay but to shady when it becomes to the paying the bill time they don't give their clients a receipt, they just verbally give u the amount with out mention that they already charged u a 20% tip for a party of 3 or more with out your consent, they show u the iPad with the main total and of course they don't mention anything about the tip and of course u as a client do tip them a plus %20 so I end up paying more in tips that for my food I ask for the receipt and they told me they will text it to me ... of course 10 min after u had gone ...

Yelp
First time here it was recommended by a friend and I followed them to see what the food looks like I ordered the yellow plantain dish and my husband the green with the fried cheese I had a soda and he had water for desert we had el cepillado which was good. Although I didn't like that we weren't given a bill the guy came and charged us very expensive Venezuelan food for what we ate we paid $40 we were very disappointed about that! My husband doesn't want to go anymore!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good, but service is the worst, the waiter or the owner I don't really know who he is so rude!!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Great Venezuelan food!!!! I just love it it makes me think about the food in my country.... attention is great and menu is extensive! Plenty options and if you look healthy they have this plate with steak or chicken and salad.... if your not into healthy the burgers are extremely good and big!
google avatar

Reinaldo A.

Yelp
This restaurant is situated on the western side of Miami and specializes in Venezuelan food, particularly from Zulia state, to the West of that country. The menu is extensive and packed with calories, though it has a few options that can be considered fit. The dishes are plentiful and they are prepared right away as they are ordered. The restaurant's specialty is the "Torpedo", a sandwich in hotdog buns that comes along with many ingredients. For Venezuelans is is a place where you can eat the local dishes, and for the foreigners, a place to experience fried food, gravies and cheese. What we liked the most: Chicken Empanada
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food great service very affordable true Venezuelan "maracucha" food street style. Will come back every day if I could.

Yelp
Let's start by saying I don't give this restaurant any stars, but I'm forced to put a minimum of 1... I was a little hesitant but decided to give it a try! What a disaster. Let's first start out by saying the waitress was rude. Handed us the menu and asked us what we wanted to eat. Had to tell her to give us a minute;we've never been there before. We asked for tostones with cheese as an appetizer and two burgers She brings out 5 tiny tiny (bite sized) tostones. With shredded cheese in a plastic container. I proceed to open it up and the cheese was completely FROZEN. We asked for it to be warmed up. The Waitress and what appeared to be the manager or owner seemed mad about it. My husband asked for a Coke and I asked for a cup of water with ice. They brought me a bottle I refused it and asked for water with ice. Upon refilling my water she tries and brings me ANOTHER bottle. I told her no I asked for a cup with water and ice. She brought me hot tap water. The waitress was rude the whole time not friendly at all The burgers came out... A mess. The burger inside was raw. ( waitress didn't ask me how i wanted my meat cooked). And tasted like it was 2 weeks past its expiration date. The bottom of the bun of the bread was a big mush, it was all wet because the burger was dripping. It was disgusting!!! The fries where nothing out this world. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I probably wouldn't eat here if they were giving away food. Terrible....
google avatar

Louis S.

Yelp
5 stars! Great choice for late night good Venezuelan food! You'll enjoy this place much more if can go with a Venezuelan or Spanish speaker! The Charles Fit is awesome if you want to keep it healthy and excellent for those who are doing the Keto diet!! Will be back soon! Would love to see yuca frita on the menu!
google avatar

Eugenia S.

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend it. I asked for a chicken arepa and without prior notice it came with cheese and a cheese sauce. When I asked the lady she didn't care and told me that it was in the menu, which wasn't true plus I asked her before if it was only chicken and she said yes. She took forever bringing water and charging us. She was always behind the bar and never paid attention to us, something as simple as asking for water turned out to be a complete struggle. Place is nice and clean, tequeños are great and salsa verde is delicious. O don't really remember her name, but I'll say the problem isn't the place but the server.
google avatar

Vladimir Y.

Yelp
Best burgers I've eaten in the U.S so far. The quality exceeds expectations and make the prices unbelievable. Im a regular client even though im not in their instagram page. 100% recommended. Best venezuelan food in Miami.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Arepas in Miami!! I love coming here! The food tastes delicious and the staff is warm and welcoming! This place the THE place to go! I would give it a 6/5 if I could!

Yelp
I went to eat there and when it came to the total it was more than expected . Please always check your receipt before paying . The food was all right not a big deal as some people had said .

Yelp
My sister has been fan-girling about Charles & Larry's for months now. Came today with my family. Ordered the "Parilla mixta 1 person". Very good plate. Came with chicken, meat, and sausage, Palmita cheese and a side; I chose the arepa. I really liked it. Was really healthy. Not heavily fried or seasoned. Asked for medium rare and medium rare I got, thankfully. At first my plate was brought out without sausage, but then the waitress brought a side of sausage without me having to complain .. which was cool, when they fix your problems before you have to bring them up... nice people. Not super personal... but they kept their standards high with the quality of food. Will come back bring my girlfriend around and she if she likes it. Taking home left overs too which is nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Our uber driver recommended this place and he was not wrong. It's small place but full of ambiance and awesome staff. The food omg it's just so good and to me it seems like huge portions.

Yelp
Decided to visit Charles & Larry hearing a friend mention it for a good 5 times and let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed. AMAZING food and service. Best tequeños I have ever had and the patacón with picaña was DELICIOUS. Will definitely be coming back!

Josey Z.

Yelp
If you want to experience what its like to eat overpriced Venezuelan food at a very low income public park picnic, this is your place. The bathrooms are gross, tables are sticky, plates and forks are disposable and the cups used to serve water were probably stolen from a dentist office (7 Oz). The service is horrible too and the food is not great and overpriced like this is some local hot spot with millions of Instagram followers. Go somewhere else
