The 15 Best Breweries in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Hazy IPAs flow from this highly sought after brewery on the always busy Savannah Highway in Avondale. Charles Towne Fermentory focuses on traditional ingredients and fermentation that showcases the history of brewing. Often hosting food pop-ups like Sarah’s Dumps and the Castejóns in the dedicated kitchen space, help patrons soak up those beers. Newly opened second concept the Garden by Charles Towne Fermentory provides an outdoor option for those seeking to partake in outdoor drinking." - Barbara Skidmore

Google
Was expecting better beer based on the Untappd reviews. It’s well crafted and the sours were their best beers but the IPAs lack the hop-bomb profile I’ve come to expect being from the Midwest. Cool spot, great service, and love the tasty partnership with Bok Choy Boy (though your clothes will smell like a kitchen when you leave as a result).

While visiting Charleston for a guy's trip, we stopped by Charles Towne Fermetory for a little day drinking. The bartenders are very friendly and gave good suggestions on what beers to try. I had the Yacht Party, Extra Hellos, and Pacifica Pils. They were all great beers, and we bought beer to go. This is a cool place.

Google
Still don't think that this review will ever change. Amazing beer, great service. One of the best in the state. A full spectrum of beer styles rendered beautifully. A must stop for beer lovers.

Google
West Ashley has amazing beer and some of the best beer in Charleston is something, I regrettably did not know before today. Charles Towne has some awesome selection of brews. All of them seem to be excelling at the specific style the brew master was going for. Oh, you want a Czech Dark Lager? Well, enjoy one of the best. This place is fantastic and so well hidden on Savannah Hwy that I can't believe I have overlooked it. I will be spending more time here in the future from now on.

Google
Hands down best beer in the Charleston area. Check out the ratings on untapped app. Great IPA, great Gose , low ABV makes a super beach beer. 2022 El Rayo is off the charts. They also offer a El Rayo slushy which went down way to easy. Two locations Nothing wrong with the Original Savannah Highway venue but the new venue, called “the garden “ is a wonderful place to spend the day or evening. Still developing the facility but a real nice, family friendly, indoor / outdoor venue. Do not serve food yet but a taco place and BBQ place 100 yards down the street. Both pair well with beer.

Google
Good beer. Nice atmosphere. Small place so seating can be a little limited but still an enjoyable experience. They also have board games and fuse-ball table which can be fun with friends. Good place to spend an afternoon drinking and hanging out!

Google
Extremely nice beer ! Not easy to park - but lovely beer. Good food too! 😎

Google
Awesome IPA and Pale Ale, honestly. I've been to many breweries all over the country and tried thousands of beers. This place makes great beer. The "NE style IPA" which is what it is even if they don't advertise it, is world class.

Yelp
Charles Towne Fermentory was a brewery that Steve and I tried in the not too distant past. The Extra Hellos Lager was a beer that we had with this particular brewery outing and it was a fairly good experience. With this lager it was very refreshing, hoppy, crisp and an added zing (or so it felt) to add a little spring to your step. A perfect beer to enjoy in warm weather as it's nice and light and very persuasive in the idea of having more than one. Good brewery experience from a state I don't frequently delve into for craft beer.

Yelp
I've not been to the brewery or fermentory as the case may be... But I did try their Watermelon Gose and I believe it was the best beer I ever had. Perfectly salty with just enough watermelon to be noticeable, but not overpowering. Just enough sourness to give it a slight edge. If I could find a case of it I would buy it...

Yelp
The Filipino food was great!! And the beer was just as great. The service was awesome. We went 2 days in a row b/c of those 3 things. Great place. We were visiting from Georgia for 4 days. Definitely will go back next time we're town.

Yelp
Stopped in one evening after work to try it out before our dinner plans. Staff wasn't the most friendly I've ever encountered, but we sampled a couple of different beers. I enjoyed the size options so you weren't required to get a full pint if you wanted to try a few. I'd come back to try some more!

Yelp
A very relaxed atmosphere with a friendly bartender and a delicious Asian fusion-type kitchen-mate. We appreciated the sports tv with nice craft beers to sample. We're definitely going back!

Yelp
Charles Towne Fermentory is a craft brewery that opened in Charleston, South Carolina in December 2016. It was founded by head brewer Adam Goodwin. He began home-brewing at the age of 16 and eventually started helping out at Cisco Brewers in his hometown of Nantucket, MA. After graduating from college, Goodwin was hired by Tired Hands Brewing Company in Philadelphia, PA. He helped to renovate their location and built on his own foundation of brewing knowledge. Goodwin would later move back to Massachusetts and was hired as the original head brewer of Trillium Brewing Company in Boston. After a couple of years, he and Trillium employee Justin Slotnick decided to embark on a new quest. The duo relocated to Charleston with a dream to open their own brewery. They renovated an old laundromat in the West Ashley neighborhood and built a 15 BBL brewing system. Charles Towne Fermentory was met with much success. Slotnick serves as the Assistant Brewer and manages day-to-day operations at the brewhouse. In May 2022, CTF opened The Garden: a new taproom and beer garden that offers more space for customers to enjoy. My family and I recently visited Charles Towne Fermentory while we were on an East Coast Road Trip. We were visiting our cousins who live in Summerville (right outside of Charleston). Out of all the breweries that I visited during my stay, I was most excited to visit CTF due to their connection to Trillium Brewing: one of my favorite breweries. CTF has a small but cozy taproom. We arrived on a Saturday night and it wasn't too crowded. CTF doesn't offer traditional flights but they do offer short pours. I tried samples of "The Yellow Brick Commute IPA", "Telstar XIX" (Double IPA), and "Extra Sunny" (Hazy Double New England IPA). All three were fantastic, but the latter was my favorite. I later had a short pour of "Maser" (Hazy New England IPA) before leaving. For people like me who love hazy IPAs, CTF is the go-to Charleston brewery. It's easy to see why they stand out in an already impressive craft beer scene!

Yelp
I love sours- and these are hard to beat. The 2023 El Rayo Sour ale was my favorite- followed closely by the La Vida Gose.

Yelp
Great atmosphere--very laid back and welcoming. Parking is a little tricky, since it's street parking. Nice selection of light and dark beers. Beertender was nice, 3 different sizes of beers available, and to-go options.

Yelp
After hearing friends rave about Charles Towne Fermentory, I finally tried it during the COVID-19 quarantine. CTF was open for pick up orders, and online ordering made it easy to pick out beers. My husband got the Yacht Party 4-pack, and I had the El Rayo 2020 beer. The El Rayo is 4.5% ABV and a tequila barrel aged sour. The Fermentory only has this beer for about a week each year- the week of Cinco de Mayo. I usually prefer cocktails, and this beer tasted just like a margarita, with hints of lime, orange, and agave. It's the best sour beer I've had. The Fermentory hosts pop-ups with food from vendors like Big Boned BBQ, Holey City Bagels, and Bok Choy Boy. You could order food online and pick it up with your beer. You can see which food vendors and beers are available on their website or social media (both updated regularly). I wish I'd visited the Fermentory sooner, and I hope to enjoy a drink and some food inside the taproom as soon as we're allowed to.

Yelp
Older and original review below. After visiting 19 of Charleston's breweries, Charles Towne is in my top 3. Open space with view of barrels and stainless steel. Video games, board games, and foosball in a wood covered and exposed setting. This brewery covers the gamut of beers, sour, beetus, and IPA. Great beers that are launching into the upper echelons of breweries. Close, real close. NO DOGS ALLOWED. For someone who travels with their dog, I had to leave. A shame too, because there was a bottle release. On to the other many Charleston area breweries that are accomodatin

Yelp
A brew pub atmosphere with a number of brews on tap (see the photo), with my wife and I trying four different ones, most in 5 ounce glasses until we decided on the one that each of us wanted. Of those my favorite was the Yacht Party (American Lager with 4.2% ABV) and second place went to Pelican Splash (IPA with pineapple, 7.5% ABV). Food is available from the separate business of Matzo y Masa, LLC. I had the Bagel Burger in the photo which had Chihuahua cheese which was thick, melted and quite tasty. The meat was Chorizo Verde (Green Chorizo) a specially prepared pork patty which was somewhat green in color, making you think that it is a veggie, but that color comes from the cilantro in the pork sausage. Quite, quite delicious on the onion bagel. Yes, it is something for me to order again, when I return and yes, I will. This is a former dry cleaner location, immediately behind/next to the fire station in Avondale area on Savannah Highway. There is one door to enter, although there is another which directs you on. In the middle of these standard size doors is a garage style door with glass inserts (see my photo). Laid back, bare bones feel.

Yelp
So we did a mini self-guided Chucktown brewery tour/crawl...13 breweries in 3 days. Charles Towne Fermentory on the west side of the city was my favorite. The owner strives for, and achieves, a neighborhood style bar/brewery crankin' out rock star brews. Super friendly beertenders that chatted us up for almost two hours, and they host visiting chefs that rotate through to use their in house kitchen, and the best beers I tasted on our mini tour! No doubt I love this place because their owner focuses some of his attention on making New England style IPA's, which are my favorite. They are definitely in his wheelhouse; he was the founding and head brewer at Trillium in Boston (if you're familiar) for a number of years and he moved down to Chucktown to open his own neighborhood spot. He has a great rep in brewing circles for good reason. Go try some of his beers and judge for yourself. Ten beers on tap at CTF. My favorite was the Pallet Rider DIPA weighing in at 8.2% abv. They do have cans you can take home too, though I'm not sure they actually produce enough beer in their batches to allow for 64 ounce growler fills. I do know they'll do crowler fills to take home though. Pints in house will run you from like 5 to 8 bucks depending...they don't do flights, but they do 5 oz. tasters that range from 2 to 3 bucks per. The place has a totally laid back, non-pretentious feel and is rustic without being sketchy. The bartop itself is nice and they actually serve craft ice cream sammiches for 4 smackers. They are really small, but also really good. Try the salted caramel. Good lovin' right there. Of course, they also have some typical brewery snacks, but they don't do a full food menu. Only 2 downers about CTF right now...no WiFi and street parking that SUCKS...can be near impossible to find a spot. Plan ahead that you'll likely need to circle the block. It's probably a good thing that there are these two downers, otherwise I'd be driving down here from the Dirty Myrtle every single chance I could. Outside of that CTF takes the cake for me and I will most definitely be back!

Yelp
Mmmmmmmm Well only came for one beer Totally not impressed with the unfriendly bartenders. They seem annoyed answering questions about their beers and no type of conversation. The seating was very stiff no where to lounge and just drink a beer at a non hard seat and table.

Yelp
Stopped in for beers tonight and stayed for dinner. Not a huge range of beers but what they offer is really well done. The marzen is one of the best I've had in years, well balanced and clean tasting. The pale ale was very cloudy, but the flavor was great. The Slipstream has the perfect amount of bitterness from the Ethiopian beans. Expect a very high noise level in here, it can be hard to carry on a conversation some times. They had the big windows/doors open to the street and.when the trucks rolled by... They have a great little kitchen that serves Asian/Vietnamese food. We all had the noodle bowls with chicken shrimp and egg roll. It was perfect - filled us up without being heavy. The flavors were perfect with the cilantro really coming through. It took a little while to get our food after we ordered, I think they had a crush of orders when they first opened up, so heads up on that. What a great little spot. Parking can be tough, we managed to find a spot in the alley behind the place, but if they fills up you could be goofing it a ways.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to come here based on the pop up restaurant--Matzo Y Masa. I'm not a beer drinker but my friend enjoyed the two she had. The bartenders were nice. Inside is spacious and bright. There were a few local vendors selling merchandise by the entrance. Parking in Avondale can be difficult. Luckily, we found spots behind the building. Overall, it's a cute spot to hang out with friends.

Yelp
I love the Fermentory! My only complaint is that they waited until I moved out of Avondale to open. Their beers are always really fresh while still being approachable to craft beer lovers and non-craft beer lovers alike. I also love that some of my favorite food trucks / kitchens do pop ups in their mini kitchen in the back, so I get to enjoy beer, great food, and a fun atmosphere all at the same time! Was accidentally here for trivia last week, and it was really fun! I like that they included some visual elements, as well as the typical questions, as well. Always something fun to do at the Fermentory!

Yelp
First visit, would make this a regular stop if I lived here. The beers are clean, full of body and flavor. The descriptions on the sheet are pretty accurate. Service was friendly and helpful. Nothing pushy, 2 bartenders on a Friday afternoon. Good ratio. I love how the place opens right to Savannah Hwy. A great place to watch Charleston go by whiling away a Friday afternoon. Update: after tasting the board...these are some of the best beers I've ever had. Don't miss this place.

Yelp
Needing to pick a friend up in West Ashley who needed to drop a rental car off, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to check out Charles Towne Fermentory. Did I mention that the reason I picked to go here was because PubFare was going to be there? Love that burger!!! My friend and I were lucky enough to find street parking right in front!!! I felt like George Costanza when he pulled up at the hospital on Seinfeld. The place wasn't too crazy busy yet so we got a table after ordering three different 2.5oz beers. How much beer is 2.5? Not much but the One Tracht Mind I ordered was great so I ordered another bigger glass. The vibe was super chill and everyone we interacted with was fun. We stayed for about an hour. The line at the bar was getting super long when we left so glad we got in and out and enjoyed great beers and a burger!

Yelp
Fermentory is the go to spot for good craft beer when in the Avondale area of Charleston. The staff is always great and attentive. The beers are awesome. My favorite is their flagstaff beer the Sungazer which is a hazy unfiltered IPA. Check it out if you are an IPA fan. While primarily known for their IPAs, they definitely make a good variety of beers such as porters, lagers, etc. something for everyone. My only complaint is the pop up kitchen. The food choices always seem to be very exotic kind of out there food options. Wish there was more simple good food at a reasonable price. The taproom is a great space especially when the weather is nice and they open the large garage door at the front. Can get a bit crowded though.

Yelp
Charles Towne Fermentory: the Perfect Neighborhood Brewery. I recently moved to West Ashley, only a couple blocks from Charles Towne Fermentory. Thus far it has proven to be my favorite spot within walking distance. The beers are diverse and wonderful. If you want something light and crisp, I'd recommend the Yacht Club. If NE IPAs are more your thing, try the No Radar or Telstar. Keep in mind, however, that the taps rotate so these offerings may not be available during your visit. That said, I guarantee you won't be disappointed regardless of what they have on tap. In addition to their beer, they have rotating food vendors. My girlfriend and I had some delicious clam chowder during our visit. Finally, I was happy to learn that before the pandemic, the brewery hosted an annual 'There Will be Hops' beer festival with impressive brewery peers. I sincerely hope they revive this and would recommend you consider attending if so

Yelp
Great spot for some brews! We stopped in to Charles Towne Fermentory for a beer and really enjoyed it! There are not too many beers on tap, but they were all great choices. I had the Mars Express and it was tasty. If you're a beer person, you'll love it here. There is a little food ordering area too with a few choices to snack on. We didn't order anything as we had just eaten but I saw other people's food and it looked pretty good! There is a foosball table and we had a little competition running through our group. I came out the champion, of course. Definitely a cool chill spot! Wish we had something similar in Orlando!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
A decent craft brew kind of place. I wasn't fortunate to catch a pop up like many of the others have noted before, but the beer was cold and decent and there are a handful of places to sit and enjoy it.. all they're missing is a variety of classic board games. They have apparel for sale and the beer tenders are friendly enough to let me try a few beers before committing to one large one, though they do offer many different sizes which are priced accordingly. Hopefully next time I will be lucky enough to catch some food!
google avatar

Julio H.

Yelp
Excellent beers and excellent use of the English language (or clever marketing plot). The beers here are prime quality, I absolutely recommend you stop by. Also, the kitchen rotates every night, so you will be getting a different menu if you go two nights in a row. The area is also hip and cool, and the crowd is friendly and talkative.
google avatar

Ami A.

Yelp
Great local brewery located in Avondale. Open concept with a great beer selection. It was open and airy. We made our own flight and tried five different beers. They also had an Asian pop up restaurant with three appetizers and two noodle bowls. Kwei Fei was spicy and flavorful. Definitely packed a kick! A great neighborhood spot for a beer!
google avatar

Caro M.

Yelp
We finally got around to checking out the Fermentory (pronounced ferment-ory...I had to ask because I didn't know!) and we were not disappointed. I'm not a big beer drinker. I know nothing about the different types of brews and I'm probably a brewery's worst nightmare: "what's your sweetest beer?". But Nick took it in stride and directed me around their offerings. I really liked the Dutchman's Breeches IPA. My second favorite would be Livin La Vida Gosa. It's got a fun berry coloring and went down smoothly. The Infinite Yawn with the pineapple variant was on point too. I've been to a few breweries in my day because I'm usually in the minority since everyone seems to love beer, but my experience here was way better than most. I found three beers that I liked and I'm not into beer! They were all interesting and unusual combinations that work. The space is nothing more than what you'd expect for a brewery (I.e. the seating could be better and the stools were small and hurt after a while). 2 Nixon's were there the night we went and it was great. We sat at the bar and met several cool patrons and ended up having great conversations with them and the bartenders. We'll be back!
google avatar

Erin T.

Yelp
I really want to like this place but everytime we come, I just get a weird vibe. The bar tenders are never especially friendly and don't offer any insight into the beer. The beer is just ok. I have high expectations for craft beer in Charleston and they aren't meeting it. They do have a small kitchen with rotating chefs. They have The Castejons a few times a week. We will be returning just to indulge in Alfonso's paella as it looks amazing.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
I came here after a nice dinner so I could drink some good beer. I wasn't disappointed. I tried them all and enjoyed them all. You can see my rating at untapped, Toryvalben. Service was great. I did miss trivia, but guessed they wouldn't start over.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Best beer in Charleston hands down! Go and see the new spot for yourself. It's got tons of character from the reclaimed wood, barn door, pallet beer list and custom wood door table. The beers are superb! You can find the owners onsite talking to everyone about their vision and process. They opened up just this past weekend with 5 beers on tap and a special cask version of the Mudlark Stout with local Broom Wagon Coffee. The IPA and Pale were quintessential version of the NE style and straight up hazy juice bombs. I cant wait until they start cranking out single hop editions of these bad boys. If you not terribly adventurous and want a lighter beer definitely grab a pint of their RALF, which is a Zwickelbier and is about as clean and crisp as you could get in a beer. Good work gentleman!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
I noticed this great establishment on my way to dinner in the area. The inner voice told me I had to stop by here. After dinner, I grabbed one of the many street parking spots near the front entrance. They were having a paint and pint night that looked pretty fun. I approached the bar and was greeted with a great smile and asked if I would like to try something. I asked for a sample of the amazing Brews they had available. I have to say each sample was great. I chose an IPA in s small growler. It takes a little longer because they actually counter pressure the growlers! Finally! Someone that actually does that. I wish I lived closer. I would regularly visit here for sure. The whole process was very easy and the staff was very pleasant and helpful. Next time I'm in town, this will be at the top of my list!
google avatar

Jake J.

Yelp
Out of towner in search of great beer!(untapped 8700 tastes) ....,the one beer I got was good but their set up is bullshit. I get covid precautions (all other breweries are open and pouring in town) but making people buy growlers and 4 packs of beer for 15 to 19 dollars without a taste is not ok. Give people a sample of what they are buying. I came to your place from 1000 miles away to try your beer don't make me pay 20 bucks for another average west coast. Prove yourself. Set out a picnic table and bottle some of your 4 packs and pour people a taste. I and others are willing to pay 4 good beer but there are soooo many average breweries out there, prove you're above average before you make me spend $
google avatar

Yelp
Cool little spot tucked alongside busy Savannah Hwy. Place is low key and relaxing -- an excellent alternative if the blaring music from Roost or Voodoo doesn't suit your mood for that night. There's about 6 or so choices of beer so not a big selection, but they are all delicious and unique. Great prices. Staff is very friendly and engaging. Place is spacious and inviting, and the garage doors open for ventilation will be great during the summer. Great addition to Avondale!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place for about three years now and have never stopped to try a pour or two, probably because the parking hassle. I was meeting family at Mello Mushroom and decided to cross highway 17 at 5:30 and give it a try. Was I impressed! From a beer standpoint and the place had a great vibe. I hear they-have some unique food selections provided or cook by guest chefs popup. The best way to follow them is using instagram Servers are very knowledgeable of the products with excellent service. I'll be back, soon

Staci T.

Yelp
With Breweries popping up all over the Lowcountry, it was only a matter of time before one popped up in West Ashley and this is one was the perfect choice! Light Ales to Dark Stouts, we were impressed with the selection on a brewery open less than 6 months. My husband tried the Oyster Gose, 'Skipjack' and this one may have been my favorite. Partnering with local seafood spot, 167 Raw, they hit it out of the park with light notes of oyster and a lemony, crisp finish! I ordered a Mango Mars Express and it proved to be just as fruity as I had hoped! There's a small rotating food menu. We didn't try as we were heading in from dinner but it appears to have a nice daily variety and the staff was knowledgeable on their brews which is always a sign of a brewery that'll last!

Yelp
I honestly can't believe it took me this long to write this review...if you're looking for a fun time in a great place, CHS Fermentory is the place for you! The staff is amazing & super friendly & their beers are awesome! They have a rotating menu of local food trucks & small kitchens, which means you're guaranteed to have a great meal. In addition, they have trivia & painting weekly. It's perfect for a date night, girl's night out, or random Tuesday.

Yelp
I called before coming to ask if their space was dog-friendly. They told me that the picnic tables were dog-friendly on days that they had the big garage doors opened, but I would have to sit on the sidewalk area of the picnic table and my dog couldn't come inside when I ordered beer. Well, I wasn't going to tie my dog to a picnic table on the sidewalk while ordering beer, so I left my pup at home. I was pretty irritated to come here and see two dogs (that did not appear to be service animals due to breed, plain collars, lack of service dog signage, behavior, etc.) hanging out at the bar with their owners. If the bar has a no-dog policy, I completely respect that. However, this needs to be enforced equally and fairly. It's not cool to tell me the rules but not enforce the rules when others aren't following them. They have a few tasty beers. I like the sun gazer and a seasonal gose they had, both of which were fruit-forward beers. They didn't have food options available when I came, but I know they have pop-ups/trucks come by on occasion. I can't say I'd come here again. There are other breweries in the area with better brews and better communication/enforcement of brewery policies.

Yelp
Stopped by on the way home from Kiawah. I've had Charles Town Fermentory on my radar for a while. After one visit, I am confident this is one of the best, if not the best, brewery in the state. Wow! Growler in hand, I walked in to take some beer back to Columbia. The bartender was friendly. Answered my questions about the beers. I tried the Sungazer with Vic Secret Hops (a NE IPA), the Pallet Rider (a NE IIPA), and the Dutchman's Breeches (a Belgium strong aged on oak and fruit). All three were superb! The NE style IPAs were top notch! See Untappd for my ratings. The beer reminds me of Courtyard in NOLA... Complex, daring beer. Bought a growler of the Pallet Rider. Also, they inspected and rinsed my growler before filling it. While it was clean, I appreciated the care for the beer and customer. And, as noted by a reviewer below, the pressure fill the growler. I'll be back!!

Yelp
Husband wanted to stop here on our way to Folly Beach. What a great little brewery! Tasted a bunch of beers, got some cans and crowlers to go. There is a food window with different businesses there every day, friendly atmosphere with tasty beer. Play some games, or hang out and watch some tv at the bar. A win win for us!

Yelp
A most remarkable time is to be had here even when it's not a can release day. Arrived only realizing I had the Pelican Splash had taken place a week prior with two other cans. As luck would have it they had an ample supply left in one the coolers behind the bar. A nice lady who hails from Maryland took care of us as we drank our juicy Sun Gazer and Pelican Splash before we dine on the magnificent food that awaited us still cooking. Roasted chicken enchiladas with a poblano mole sauce pair nicely with a small pour of Yacht Party their easy drinking lager. The shrimp ceviche and chips went rather well with our darker robust Mudlark stout also a small pour while we had great conversation with fellow patrons. Having been several times this was the first chance I had to try some of the food from the rotating pop ups I like to call the now and again. Nothing would please me more than to spend another afternoon here with my wife here drinking excellent beers and dining on wonderful food. Top notch brewery ! Would also like to talk to the owner about all his recent success and what he has in store for the future of Charles Towne Fermentory.

Yelp
Came here for PubFare CHS pop up. This was only my second time here. I love that they have pop ups inside instead of out, which makes it convenient to enjoy your beer, without having to stand in the cold (or hot) to wait for your food. I had the Gose and it was delicious! The place has a nice laid back feel. I feel it gives off more of ambiance than the more industrial breweries. My only piece of advice, don't hold customers cards to start a tab. I had to ask for my card to order my food. Just a little pet peeve.

Yelp
I stopped into Charles Towne Fermentory a few sundays ago with a date. We sat at the bar. The place was relatively slow, with one large family group (and very loud little ones), and another small group or two. Immediately I felt the vibe was very "off" here. It wasn't the usual friendly, laid back vibes I get from most breweries. This was more of an indifferent vibe Ie: we don't care that you're here. When I looked at their selection, 2/3 of the beers had been crossed off. But as my date pointed out, it was Bridge Run weekend and they were probably busy the day(s) before. The selection was also heavily skewed to the IPA, Double IPA and Pale Ale side. I appreciate breweries that make and offer a variety of brews, so that was a bummer. My Pale Ale was just okay. I wouldn't be opposed to returning, maybe on a weekend night with a different crowd, but I won't be rushing to come back. As far as both Charleston spots, and Breweries go, this was a miss for me.

Yelp
We have enjoyed Charles Towne Fermentory on our 3 recent visits. The location is ideal in West Ashely as you can check out other places before or after. Parking can be a challenge. The set up here is good, with a roll up garage door to let in the fresh air in warmer weather. There are tall pub tables, and a picnic table or 2, plus the bar. It gets busy here, and some times will be more packed than one would expect. What I like is they have an area for local pop ups to cook and sell their food while you then drink the beer. Check out their FB feed for info, we had the pleasure of 2Nixons one night and loved it. But you come here for the beer, and there are usually about 8 different ones to choose. From light, blonde to dark, stout...plus IPA in between, there is a beer for everyone. Not sure, ask for a sample. I like the Mudlark dry stout, and last time really enjoyed Dutchman's Breeches. It is a Belgian Dark Strong Ale with 9.6% ABV, sweet and delicious! Charles Towne Fermentory is another wonderful brewery in the Charleston area and worth checking out.

Yelp
Hidden gem! We only noticed it because we were stuck at the light. Looked like a place that brewed mostly sours because of the name. Went in and pleasantly surprised to see at least 6 IPA beers on draft. Tried three and all were good. If you like IPAs you should check them out.

Yelp
We rushed to show our out of town guests this highly touted brewery after googling it to find the closing time of 12:00 pm.We arrived at 11:45 with a full house, to be told "last Call was 10 min. ago." Really?!? Our guest were kind enough to buy a $22 four pack of beer as a thank you to us.. Pleeese..... Why would you not serve your guest when you have a full house? Asked by a bartender. Not a fan.

Yelp
Awesome place to meet up with friends and grab a beer... the selection of drinks is great and very versatile for the avid to the novice beer drinkers. I didn't get to try the food but will definitely be back soon to try it! Came on a Saturday night and the live music was great. Also it's pretty easy to find parking in Avondale which makes this a very accessible place to go!

Yelp
The staff in very friendly, quick, and knowledgeable. The space is very rustic, seeming to be a very hipster brewery. That said, there are much better options in the area for locally sourced pints. To me, the market in Charleston is very saturated and if you are not overly creative or exceptionally well crafted, you don't really stand out. The beers here are in a heavy rotation, and the lack of a 'standard' or 'flagship' pint leaves it to be much of a dice roll if there is a style you'd like. The place will probably be successful just because of the location, but it's not somewhere I would frequent.

Yelp
Delicious, consistent and unique beers. What a welcome addition to the Avondale scene! They keep it simple with only 5-6 brews on tap but they're all delicious, unique representations of their style. I love that nothing is more than 7% ABV, because that means I can have more than one! The brewers and staff are very friendly and welcoming. They offer their beer in an 8 or 16 oz pour which is also nice if you want to try multiple (they do not serve flights). The space has a nice set up, with probably a dozen or so seats at the bar, a community table that'll seat 8-10, and then some smaller high tops. Kitchen opening soon.

Yelp
Great fermentory in the heart of Avondale! I would highly recommend for anyone who likes beer! I am not a beer drinker, but they appear to have some great beers, and people who enjoy them! Went for trivia and enjoyed it though I wish they had wine or non beer options!

Yelp
This was the second brewery we stopped at in Charleston. We stopped during the afternoon after our flight arrived. My first impression was that it was a smaller place but I enjoyed the decor. I think if it were the evening that it would have a much better vibe. We had a beer and left but overall it was a cool little place.

Yelp
Nice place, very open. An actual brewery and the beer was great. The service was wonderful, all the staff were friendly and helpful. The selection is small but everything is brewed at the location and quite tasty.
