Yelp
TLDR: Charley Dove has great potential. Has some new-restaurant humps to overcome, but their food is undeniably delicious. Take this review with a grain of salt, as I haven't eaten out in a restaurant with girlfriends in roughly 2 million years, so my experience could be slightly rose-colored.
I managed to snag mid-week dinner reservations for three, a perfect excuse for a much needed girls night. We sat indoors, due to the forecast calling for humidity and a 93 degree philadelohian-summer-evening. The interior is cute, a minimalist vibe with mediterranean inspo - think tall white walls, wooden tables, low lighting, open kitchen, etc.
Things to note:
:: The restaurant was HOT. It was a VERY warm evening, but that combined with small space, lack of ventilation (I saw ceiling fan but never felt any evidence of them circulating air), and an open kitchen - we were all quite warm by the time we paid the bill. It's summer and I was wearing a dress, I actually felt like I left butt/leg print on the chair when I stood up with *serious* swamp ass.
:: Timing - we were in no rush, and therefore weren't paying attention to timing. However, when I pulled out my phone as I reached for my credit card, I was shocked to see 10pm! Our reservations were for 7:45, so despite the check being dropped promptly as we finished dessert, we sat for over 2 hours!
: Additionally, After our first course, we had been sitting for a few minutes when our waitress came over to ask if we received our main course yet (we hadn't) and looked slightly puzzled. She went to go check on it, and brought it out 10 minutes later - my guess is that it accidentally went to a different table. Honestly, it didn't bother us, but if I had been paying a babysitter on a date night, I think I'd be feeling differently.
Food: (Literally all good). We couldn't decide, so we chose to do family-style, choosing most of the apps and one entree.
:: A little taste / amuse-bouche - someone (not our waitress) dropped these on our table and said it was 'our take on a falafel with a side of tahini'. I remember this vividly because I was puzzled that the description didn't fit what she was serving us. I doubled checked with the waitress and she confirmed it was a goat cheese ball wrapped in crushed walnuts and Zataar - they were VERY delicious. Probably just a mixup from kitchen, but made me want falafel.
:: Roasted Beet with Goat Cheese and Pistachio Pesto - YUM. The beet was divine; the massive beet was roasted to perfection, stuffed with seasoned goat cheese and sitting atop drool-worthy pesto. The saltiness of the goat cheese made the sweet beet flavor pop, the pistachio pesto was fresh and herby, this dish was 10/10.
:: Hummus, Summer Squash, Zaatar, Olive oil - if I could give this dish a higher rating than 10/10, I would. I love hummus as much as the next person, but this was elevated beyond my expectations. The squash was a fresh zing to the smooth creamy hummus, and the zaatar added that earthy spice. We asked for more pita, and practically licked our plate clean. One of the top dishes of the evening.
:: Roasted Pickled Cauliflower, Spicy Herb Labneh, Pomegranate, Walnuts - This dish had SO MUCH flavor, I felt like we went with Guy Fieri to 'Flavor Town'. I'd definitely recommend this - a really fresh take on cauliflower, so yummy, and different than anything I've had before! Another 10/10.
:: BBQ Baby Octopus, Crispy Saffron Rice, Grilled Shishitos, Zhoug - very delicious! It unfortunately got outshown next to the other dishes, but a very solid dish. It had a bit of a bite from the Zhoug and the overall flavor was amazing. Despite being very good, probably on the bottom of 'favorites' from the evening.
:: Lamb Sausage & Goat Cheese Stuffed Peppers, Spicy Tomato Sauce - Umm hello gorgeous. This dish is again, perfection. Flavors balanced very well, the sauce was unreal, and the lamb sausage was perfect. Definitely order this!
:: Braised Veal Short Ribs, Herbed Israeli Couscous, Pomegranate Seeds (the entree) - very good! A bit on the salty side, and flavor profile wasn't as 'wow-pow' as some of the entrees. The pomegranate seeds felt a bit like an afterthought as opposed to being part of the dish. The Couscous was perfection, the short rib was cooked beautifully and fell off the bone with just a look. A great dish, but after all the amazing apps, it didn't really stand out - kinda heavy and looking for a bit more acidity.
DESSERT (we split two)
:: Napoleon -layers of puff pastry . rose water cream . strawberries. A very well balanced dessert, the cream wasn't overly sweet (or overly rose watery!) - the strawberries and the crunchy puff pastry all together, it was a delicious dessert.
::Dark Chocolate Ganache - Candied Orange Peel . Mint . Olive Oil. All together, the dish was delicious, but made the mistake of eating the candied orange peel first (v sweet), and then dredging the ganache through the EVOO (thought it was honey).
