A Chile Road Trip on the I-25 from Las Cruces to Denver | Eater

"A straightforward Mexican restaurant run by owners from Puebla whose menu includes a ‘Lo Tradicional’ section with crispy rellenos, Mexican hamburgers, and green chile—examples of how immigrant cooks embrace and respect local I-25 traditions." - Gustavo Arellano

The carne asada tacos are Angelino approved! They are absolutely fantastic and though the restaurant caters to people that don’t like spicy foods, I wish they made really spicy salsa for us Californians that enjoy good Mexican food.

Google
Just the cutest Mexican restaurant. The food is great; the atmosphere is fun; and it's run by a beautiful 'mom-and-pop' family that truly cares about their guests. Highly recommended!

My husband and i absolutely LOVE Charrito’s! Really great food from really great people. The service is always quick and great. Staff is all very friendly and sweet. Tonight we did takeout and I got the Fajitas with Carnitas and holy moly. It was SO GOOD! Plus the Churros are delightful. Thank you guys! 😍

Don't let the simple exterior fool you, this place is so LIVELY inside. Spanish music playing in the background not too loud. The Chicken Mole was sweet and delicious, the rice and beans so cheesy. The Horchata(drink) was perfect and cold. Loved the atmosphere, they have a bar and plenty of booths. The patio is large and covered. The service was great. Grateful to find such a lovely Mexican restaurant in this cute town on my way to Denver.

Amazing experience. Walking in to such beautiful colors. Staff was friendly, helpful, and fast. It was like we had 4 waiters because they were all helping out and making sure we had everything we needed. I had a chimichanga and margarita. He had a burrito and beer. Everything was delicious. We came for lunch and decided because it was so good we would take home a sampler. For lunch, extra meal for dinner, drinks and tip we paid just under 100 dollars. Well worth it!!

Google
Disappointing and unwelcoming experience. I arrived 25 minutes before closing, planning to dine in. When we asked for just one more minute to decide what to order, the staff member responded with, “Please hurry, we have 15 minutes till close.” That immediately set a negative tone. It’s hard to enjoy a meal when you’re being rushed and essentially told, we don’t want you here. If a restaurant is open until a certain time, guests should be treated with the same level of respect and hospitality as if they had arrived earlier. Unfortunately, this experience felt anything but welcoming. We didn’t feel appreciated as customers and customer service is everything in the restaurant business. Because of that, I have to give them one star.

Google
It’s hard to find really good Mexican food here locally and Charritos House did not disappoint. Love finding little gems like this and the drive there is beautiful. Both the food and service is great and reasonably priced. The music they played was perfect. I tried the shrimp ceviche and husband had the pork tamales, we’ll be buying our tamales from them this Christmas.

Google
A hidden gem for Mexican Food in the Larkspur area. Generous portions and the food is delicious! The salsa has some heat to it, but starts with a sweet flavor. A filling meal at a great price. We enjoyed it very much.

Yelp
A short drive from Jellystone Larkspur where we were visiting friends. The four kids enjoyed it too. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Overall: 8/10 Food: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Value: 7/10 We love this place. It's local to us and we're here all the time. The food is great and the service is friendly and helpful. My personal favorites are the Plato Loco ($$$) and the three item combo ($$). Their margs are awesome and plentiful as well. Stop on if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend and definitely a drive from where I live so if you're nearby, I do suggest to go by as a family owned restaurant. The vibe is beautiful, and the food was delicious along with my beverage. They say the mocajete was where to go so that's what I had. It did not disappoint, but I can't say it was the best. That's just a preference. overall, an amazing restaurant.

Yelp
Continuing our search for anything resembling good Mexican or TexMex, we ventured south of the border (the Castle Rock border, that is) to Larkspur. A few different people had recommended Charrito's House, so we gave it a try. The 3.5 star average is pretty accurate. First, the little house and somewhat dated, rustic setting is kind of neat. We were greeted and seated promptly. The menu is huge, and a lot looks good. I ordered the combination fajitas, and my daughter had the shredded beef enchiladas. Chips and salsa are both quite good. Salsa has a nice flavor with a bit of a bite at the end. Be aware, the first bowl of chips is free. After that, they'll charge $2.50/bowl and not tell you unless you ask. We saw that in the menu, but they're pretty quick to ask if you want more chips (of course we do, but not if we're paying for them). Food came out after a bit of a wait, but nothing too long. Unlike most other places, the fajitas were actually sizzling, so that's something. There wasn't a ton of meat, and what was there was kind of scrawny; however, both the steak and chicken had good taste, and combined with the peppers, onions, homemade Guac, condiments, and rice and beans (which were both fine), I had plenty of food. Of course, I took a pic of the sides but somehow forgot the fajitas. How did I do that?!? They'll also charge for substitutions. Even though I held the sour cream and other things, they charged $1.50 for an extra dollop of Guac. My daughter thought the enchiladas were ok. Not the best or worst she's ever had. I'm guessing she'd try something else if we decide to come back. We split an order of sopapillas for dessert. They were cooked perfectly and had great flavor, other than the strong amount of salt. Not sure if something was messed up in the batter or what should've been sugar and cinnamon, but they were quite salty. I guess mixed with the other flavors and honey, it wasn't THAT bad. We did eat them after all. Service was ok. Definitely not rushed. We had to ask for refills a few times, but overall, it was fine. So in the end, another 3.5 star experience. I'd come back if we were in Larkspur and hungry, but we probably wouldn't rush back down from Castle Rock with so many other options nearby.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food!! And awesome margaritas!! A local favorite! The owners are super friendly and welcoming!

Yelp
The food is ok......however, they charged an uplift on my egg dish, and there was no mention of it during the order process. I was told that the uplift was for the eggs serviced. If you are going to charge more, you have to alert the customer.......I may have picked something else. Not sure I will return.

Yelp
Call first even though hours are posted they may be closed. We have done take out and dine in. The food is authentic Mexican and many love the taste! I am a bit skeptical of the environment and cleanliness of what "we can't see"...I have not felt well following a couple of meals.

Yelp
The food is fabulous! My family is vegetarian and I am vegan. They were EASILY able to take care of us and feed us according to our dietary needs. (They do not use lard, either.) We were served quickly and the server was very responsive and attentive. She made us feel like we were family. The ambience is nice, with Mexican-American restaurant decor. I wish I had found them earlier. I kept driving past when I would go home and I'd look at Charritos, thinking it "was a really small restaurant that would take forever to be served". I was so wrong!! The size is much bigger than you would imagine! The ambiance is wonderful, the service is great, and the food is fantastic! don't hesitate, try them out!

Yelp
The food was delicious and served in a very appealing way. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated. It has a nice deck that will be wonderful as the weather gets warmer will definitely be back.

Yelp
The inside is cute and fun. Lots of great things to look at. The people here are pleasant and nice. The food was really authentic and was delicious. Great place for a relaxed dinner. Love it.

Yelp
Really good food, the carnitas are amazing. The cost is reasonable, the drinks are creative. The restaurant is clean and the servers are friendly. My tweens like eating here, fun little place for low key dining out. We give Charrito's 4.5 out of 5

Nick R.

Yelp
Fantastic staff, fantastic food, fantastic ambiance. This place deserves more business, and you should come here. Literally zero complaints. White queso!!!

Yelp
Excellent food in a cozy little restaurant. If you're driving through larkspur, don't miss it! Super friendly service and staff as well.

Yelp
Friendly people, great food, great atmosphere. We love this place and go here every chance we get!

Yelp
I go here often since I'm a member of the town, this is my favorite restaurant in Larkspur. I love Mexican food and the food here is great! The service is amazing, the employees are very nice, and respectful. One of the waiters always remembers my usual order every time I come. Restaurant isn't usually busy, but even when it is, you still get served quickly. Love this place!

Yelp
Stopped in for Breakfast Burrito. Greeted with a smile. A quiet unassuming place. Sat inside on this windy Saturday morning, but there looks to be ample.outdoor seating. They bought me chips & Salsa, while i waited for my Burrito. It came out and was awesome..Added bonus, they rent Kayaks for the little lake across the street!!

Yelp
Stopped in on a Tuesday for lunch. There appeared to be only one server, but he was hustling and we didn't wait long for service of our meals. Ordered the two-item combo: Chile Rellano, and a pork Tamale. Came with rice, beans, and a mild green Chili. All yummy, good portions, and reasonable price. Chips and salsa were served, and the salsa had a little bite, but yummy. Coke products: Pretty good choice for lunch.

Yelp
This is my third time here but first time to review. We started the day hiking about 7 miles over at Spruce Mountain Open Space and decided we deserved some Mexican food! I love their mole enchiladas and my husband got the Mexico burrito. We sat out on the patio with our dog. It was nice and shady with a breeze. I would hike 7 miles again for this good food!

Amanda P.

Yelp
Amazing quality Mexican food located in the quaint mountain like town. Amazing service & quality taste.

Marty D.

Yelp
Bad service rude people overpriced Margaritas They charged $18 and had hardly any tequila.
google avatar

Beth G.

Yelp
The food was decent, but they were out of several items that we tried to order. In addition, the service was very slow. I would still come again; my party and I had a nice time here. This is a family-owned place and very authentic.

Rose G.

Yelp
Good food and the service was good. The water is horrible and sodas are $5. I thought the sombreros that are made into lights was so creative.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The Margaritas are good. The salsa is hot. The staff is friendly. What more could you ask for? My dad thought the mole could be thicker, but he can write his own review! Lol. Will visit this place again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
We had a delicious lunch here today. Service was great. Food was outstanding. It's not easy for vegans around here, but their vegetable burrito was perfect. Guacamole was fresh and delicious. Even got to watch the Bears get beat.... Check them out if you haven't already.

Ron H.

Yelp
Not dog friendly, considering there are so many restaurants with outside seating that allow dogs. They also don't support delivery orders. We tried twice, via two different modes to give them our business. I guess they are doing fine without.
google avatar

Jerleen S.

Yelp
I give this place 5 stars because the customer servers was good. Our food was BOMB!! We're from San Diego and the tacos were better then some Mexican restaurants in SD. It's such a random spot. We'll fur sure come back. The 3.5 stars threw me off but it's solid Mexican food.
google avatar

Renni D.

Yelp
We live part-time in the southern part of the California Sur of Mexico. Charrito's House is the BEST Mexican food we have found in the entire area of Denver. The service is always very good, especially tonight... only one person working the entire dining room and we had outstanding service for a busy night. Everything was written down, not one thing missed. They just did a little change in some of the furnishings which we love. The ambiance is as always nice, but the upgrades are wonderful to see. We highly recommend. One of our favorite restaurants for the last 3 years.

Samantha R.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for slow service, less than mediocre food, and want to pay $50 for lunch for 2...look no further. Seriously, I'll never be back.

Grayson E.

Yelp
I've come through here three time to eat because I've heard great things, they are never open, I'm Not sure if I'm just unlucky but I had called and checked their website and both said open, got there at 5 and they're closed. It says they close at 9.
google avatar

Brenda N.

Yelp
Good local Mexican food for us lucky locals in Larkspur. But worth the trip from up north on Castle Rock. Or from down south in Monument.
google avatar

JJ L.

Yelp
I've given this place three chances over a period of several months and the food had gotten progressively worse. Not quite sure how they're still in business. This is the only "Mexican Food" location within several miles, so perhaps this is what the local community thinks Mexican food is. Do not recommend.

Laura Z.

Yelp
Love the service and food. The Mole is so good. The nachos are the perfect snack. Enchiladas are my favorite.

L E.

Yelp
I wish these guys could get their act together. The first time I tried to order food there, it was 7pm - I was hungry and coming home from work and wanted take-out. They close at 8pm. I called in to order and the woman who answered the phone said they were closed. When I questioned it saying your closing time online says 8 pm, she said, "We close when we close". At that point I figured I just wouldn't try again. Fast forward to last night (Cinco de Mayo 2020) - I thought, okay I'll give them another try. I called in my order at 7pm and they said it would be 45 minutes. No problem. I got there 45 minutes later and there were around 10 cars in the queue, understandable since it was Cinco de Mayo. I was the last car. I waited for 20 minutes and ONE car pulled forward - ONE!!! And that car pulled around to the front of the restaurant - I assume because their food was not ready, or there was a problem with their order?? I waited for another 5 minutes and decided that it could be another hour (or more) before I finally would get to the drive through and decided to leave without my food (the restaurant doors were locked and I saw two employees inside who were not answering the phone). The owners should consider learning how to run a restaurant. This "customer service" is unacceptable, but I doubt they care or even read these reviews.

Yelp
Reliably good food. Good service and great drinks. We stop in often with the whole family. Best Mexican food around. Definitely recommend.

Angela B.

Yelp
We stopped here one time while in Larkspur. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. Definitely would drive to Monument and eat at La Casa Fiesta instead.

Sara W.

Yelp
I'm a longtime summer resident of Larkspur. Heard some rumors that it was horrible, but finally decided to give them a try. Ordered takeout. Tasteless and extremely overpriced food. The worst part was the queso dip. Doesn't even taste like queso. It was like a weird watery soup. Maybe it was soup. We honestly don't know what we paid for. I have idea how they stay in business. Update! Warning!! Just found a sharp chunk of hard plastic in my burrito. Glad I didn't bite down or swallow it. 2 entrees and queso $48 plus a 20% tip. All of it inedible.

Marshall C.

Yelp
Delicious ! Try everything and enjoy the quiet ambiance. Fast service and good beverages.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Had breakfast here a few times . Great omlette. They offer poached eggs Benedict --- an elegant find at a small town cafe . The bacon is thick & choice . The server even asked if I preferred " crispy or soft" -- how nice! Also fresh soup changes daily and the 2 I tried were delicious. A nice place to do wi-fi & just hang out solo . Nice & quaint enough for " girls lunch"or to bring your Mom . The servers have been friendly , food delivered quickly . Things seems clean & tidy. The fact that I have shown up to locked doors, at odd hours, and there isn't a posted menu online ,for to-go orders ,makes me almost reserve 1 star. However ,,, lets all support a breakfast place this good in Larkspur !

Yelp
I live in the area and these guys always have hit the mark of producing awesome food. My whole family are super excited every time we goto or order Charito's. Great food!! You won't be disappointed

Leah O.

Yelp
Great little spot off the beaten path. The staff was awesome, with a wide variety of great food!

Adam N.

Yelp
Food has been good when we have eaten there but the "when" is the problem. Days/hours of operation they post means nothing. Doesn't matter if you try 10am, 2:30pm, 7pm, everyday is crap shoot on if there open and if so how long. I even have been proactive called the day before to confirm as we were going to place large to go order, call next day and no answer, drive by and it's closed as usual. I've wasted enough of my time trying to give them business...

Dylan D.

Yelp
Tastes good. Staff is really nice and I always leave full and satisfied. I often bring

Yelp
Very disappointed in this spot and I do not recommend. Our lunch plans suddenly went out the window and we needed a quick stop to grab some food. Went through the drive-thru, ordered a whopping 6 tacos, you read correctly, 6 whole tacos. The lady told me to go park in the lot and they'd bring the food out, "15-20 minutes" she said. "Sounds great, thank you" I respond. After 30 minutes of waiting I pulled back around, noticing no other cars being told to park in the lot as I had. I noticed the cars in front of me in the drive-thru that had pulled up not pulling out to the lot but rather waiting for their food and backing up the line. By the time I finally got back to the window it had been an hour since my order. What does the lady tell me? She tells me nothing. She asks me what my order was again...after an hour of waiting, hungry, after ordering before so many other customers. I drove off, and will never return again. I would not waste my time on this spot if I were you.

high e.

Yelp
This started out to be an excellent restaurant . But it is hit or miss now on quality of food. The last time we used it the food was not very good.

Steve B.

Yelp
what a rip off I ordered chips and salsa to go not even a pint of salsa and they charged me $11
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
The food here is authentic Mexican and was excellent. Great chips and salsa...you get one basket complementary. I had a tostada and Spanish rice and both tasted fresh and flavorful. Our server was nice and food came out fast. The restaurant itself is small and a little dated but the food is worth it. If we are in the area we would for sure come here again.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Went for lunch on friend's recommendation. Guess this guy's not really a friend because it was a horrible experience. The food is below average Mexican. Really really below average. Service was poor. We had to ask for something to dip in our queso, which tasted like melted Velveeta. Didn't come by once to fill our water glasses. Sat for 20 minutes before having to wave someone down for the bill. You would have thought that for $50 for 2 they wouldn't charge for a second basket of chips but they do. Huh? Since when did tortilla chips get so expensive? Very very disappointed. Next time we'll go to Del Taco.
