The Casual Weeknight Dinner Guide - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you’re in the Richmond in search of casual Indian-Pakistani food, Chaska is the answer. This family-run spot is a chill haven of well-seasoned curries, biryanis, and tandoori dishes that'll wake up your sinuses with all the spice. The menu is massive, but gravitate toward the crispy veggie pakora, the chewy okra bhindi masala, slow-cooked goat karahi, and daal makhani. Get some naan for your curries, and raita for a dash of freshness, and you’re guaranteed a good time. " - Lani Conway, Julia Chen 1, Ricky Rodriguez

We recently visited Chaska Restaurant while on a trip with our parents. After searching for a good Indian place, we decided to give it a try. When we arrived for lunch, the place was surprisingly empty, but we were seated quickly, and the server was quite pleasant and informative about the menu. We were excited to see some Thali options, which sounded good, so we ordered the Paneer Thali, Biryani, and Kadai Paneer with rice and naan. For appetizers, we chose the Samosa Chaat and Aloo Tikki. We requested everything to be made spicy, and the appetizers didn’t disappoint! The Samosa Chaat and Aloo Tikki were perfectly spiced—especially the Aloo Tikki, which wasn’t exactly what I expected but had a great flavor. However, when our main courses arrived, we were surprised to find that the Paneer Thali didn’t have any paneer. When we inquired, the staff informed us that they were out of paneer, which should have been communicated when we placed the order. The Biryani was just okay, but the naan, especially the garlic naan, and the Kadai Paneer were quite good. Overall, it’s a nice place with a decent atmosphere, but a little more communication regarding menu items would have improved our experience

Enjoyed the curries and aloo naan we ordered. Aloo naan and chicken choley stole the show with their mix of spices. Palak dal was great. Lamb seekh kebab was not bad but won’t order again (they look a bit… log-ish?). The restaurant seems very understaffed, but the ones working were very courteous and friendly.

An excellent addition to SF's Indian food. High quality food reasonable prices, and fast service. Definitely recommend trying it. We'll be coming back again. Come support a small local business!

This place is GREAT. The food is fresh and delicious. I got the lamb thali as a main the vegetable pakoras as a starter. The servings were extremely generous and I finished my meal with leftovers to take home and enjoy a second time 😋. All the meat is halal which is another big plus given how reasonably priced everything was. Definitely give this place a shot and experience the flavorful Indian / Pakistani cuisine.

Here's why i give them 5 stars: Food is excellent, service is super frendly, parking is easy. The Butter chicken is darn good. The great thing about tis place are the menu specials, a type of "bento box" Indian Style. I loved it...you get TWO food options, plus a small salad and a dessert. It also comes with a Chai tea SPECIAL BONUS: the prices are VERY inexpensive for a restaurant in San Francisco. The two item menus were $14.95👍

If you’re on the lookout for good Tandoori chicken, look no more. It was succulent, juicy and flavorful. We also had the butter naan and chicken curry. The naan was nice and the chicken curry tasted like something you would make in any Indian home. I’m so glad we live close by so we will definitely be back!

Went here for dinner and ordered butter chicken and tikka masala. Got 2 bowls filled with gravy with very less chicken it in. On the plus side, service was good and bathrooms were clean. But so few chicken pieces in 2 dishes for such a hefty price is totally not worth it. Would not go here again.

We ordered vegetarian dishes only. Service was very slow. It took around one hour to prepare first item. I recommend to order tea, paneer wrap, veggie pakora-fritters and dal makhani. I recommend not to order: paneer tikka masala, bengan bharta(eggplant) and veggie biryani. We ordered tea, paneer wrap and veggie pakora-fritters in starter. All items were tasty. But it took one hour to them to prepare these items. There was no sugar in tea. So we asked them to provide it. We were 7 people, he gave one small cup of sugar and 2 spoon only. We didn’t like it. He has to provide atleast 2 or more small cup of sugar and atleast 7 spoon. We ordered main course: Curry: Bengan bharta(Eggplant), Panner tikka masala, dal makhani, Bread: onion naan, paneer naan, tandoori roti Biryani: Veggie Biryani We didn’t like bengan bharta and paneer tikka masala. Curry of paneer tikka masala tasted like it was taken from lamb curry. Bread were ok, not so good. Biryani was also downside. It was bad.

Yelp
My partner and I were looking for an Indian restaurant to enjoy dinner. Glad to say I have found the Indian restaurant that has earned my loyalty! We were greeted by the owners and their family who were very attentive from the start. For starters we ordered the vegetable samosas and the daal soup. The daal soup was one of my favorites as a lentil and spice lover. The lentils were perfectly cooked with medium spice that was just the right amount of heat for the spice and delicious flavor. For entrees we ordered the chicken tikka masala and paneer karahi (both medium spice) which were flavorful and decently sized portions. This was my first time trying paneer and it was delicious, soft, buttery, chewy with the various spices and vegetables making it delicious. The restaurant itself is located in the Richmond area which is a safe area and makes it easy to walk to at any time of day. Inside feels like you're about to be given a home cooked meal with wonderful Indian background music. I apologize for the absence in photos as we devoured each portion of the meal and by the time we realized it was half eaten. So delicious and please give them a try!

Yelp
I placed a to go order and was really excited to try it since I just moved to the neighborhood. Estimated pickup time was 20 minutes. I came in and was told another 5 minutes and ended up waiting another 30 minutes. There was one customer there already and one seated after I had arrived and he got his food before me. When I asked about the wait, I was told my order was bigger than his and that the chicken is uncooked so mine would take longer. Zero effort to compensate for their inaccurate pickup time. Portions were extremely disappointing as well for a steeper price point. Ordered the butter chicken and tikka masala, tasted overly like tomato. Poor customer service and mediocre food.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Veggie Samosas - Probably the hit of the meal, but again I enjoy deep fried foods. Fresh and of decent size. I loved that green spicy mint sauce; the sweet red sauce was just okay. Chicken Curry Thali - 4 pieces of chicken... The good news was that there were four of us. Decent quantity except for the chicken. Butter Chicken Tikka Masala - Only two pieces of chicken. So we gave it to our guest and my daughter. My wife and I have no problem eating less meat. Again, other than the meat, it was of decent quantity. Lamb Curry Thali - The 4 pieces of lamb were tender. Decent quantity except for the lamb; are we sensing a theme yet...? Indian Tea, Masala Chai - Complimentary, my daughter enjoyed it. She would have preferred an iced chai though. Mango Lassi - Another hit! Complimentary. Decent portion, enough to share for all 4 of us. Overall, the food was good. But if you are a meat eater, this place might not be for you. Indian foods usually lean towards a vegetarian direction. Atmosphere - Very small location. They also have the unit next door. Do you plan to expand? Simple decor, see pictures. Restrooms are outdated and still have the previous owner's decor. Metered street parking. We parked 3 blocks away for free residential parking. Service - She was nice, but overall service was a failure. We got here at noon (they open at 11:30am). We were the only sit down customers; they had two walk-ins and take-out orders later. They were out of many of the foods on the menu... Like the majority of what we ordered (our first and second choices). And it took almost an hour between us ordering food and once it arrived. They brought the food out as they made it. Good thing we did family style, otherwise the last entree would have had someone starving. Price - $63 + tip, reasonably priced. As light eaters, we were glad they were not able to make one of our entrees. We actually could have gotten away with just sharing two entrees. Again, light eaters. Cash discount = 10% off. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since December of 2022. Wishing you the best.

Yelp
Nice little spot that stays open later than most restaurants. The food was good and the service very nice. Their onion naan was delicious!

Yelp
Food was very tasty. Super cute restaurant in outer Richmond district in San Francisco. It's a hole in the wall but it's very clean and the decor is cute. They had plenty of meat and vegetarian options. We had Aloo mutter, Chana masala, rice and garlic naan. The naan was light and fluffy and everything had my fav cilantro! I don't know if it was the time of day or what but we were the only ones in the restaurant. Not sure why as the food is totally worth the cost which was about what you expect for an Indian restaurant. The only bit of advice for newcomers... most restaurants automatically seem to cater to American palates with milder versions of their dishes. This restaurant is more on the spicy side which I love. Now my granddaughter didn't appreciate it but our bad because I should've asked and I know better. Other than that the portions are large. You will walk away full.

Yelp
I ordered directly from Chaska's website, with a 20% discount code for using cash pickup. I ordered: Chicken Wings Bone-In 8PCS Tandoori Chicken Achar (paid $2 extra for boneless) Chana Masala Lachcha Paratha Basmati Rice When I arrive, they didn't have my order ready and didn't even start making it, as they didn't realize an order was placed through their website. I'm a bit annoyed, but it's not a big deal - mistakes happen and I have a feeling most people aren't ordering directly from their site. They also were out of the chicken wings - again, not a huge deal and they removed it from my order. The kid at the counter tells me that he's going to give me a 20% discount for the mistake. I'm thinking this is going to be in addition to the 20% I already had when checking out online, but after he tells me my total, I realize that he didn't give me an extra 20% off. He only gave me the 20% off that I already had. I don't feel like making a big deal out of this, so I don't say anything. I figure they'll at least give me generous portions or maybe a bonus item. I get my food after waiting about 15 minutes for them to prepare it. I get home and there's no bonus items nor generous portions. In fact, it's the opposite - I only received 4 small pieces of chicken for my Chicken Achar. I'm disappointed, but it is what it is. Now the thing that really annoyed me and what prompted me to write this review - I bite into what is supposed to be boneless chicken and there's a huge bone it. Turns out all 4 pieces have bones and there's barely any chicken on any of the pieces. I paid extra for boneless! So to sum it up - they didn't have my order ready, they were out of chicken wings, they misled me with the 20% discount, the portions were small, and they gave me bone-in chicken instead of boneless. For what it's worth, the food did taste good, so I'm going with 2 stars here instead of 1, but this was a terrible experience and definitely not worth the $35 I paid. I've made similar orders at other Indian restaurants and always get more food.

Yelp
Ordered takeout on our way through the city last Sunday just bc it was a quick stop off of 19th after crossing the golden gate. I'm so glad we did! It was less than a minute off of 19th, parking was easy and the food was great. The restaurant inside was quiet at 5:00. Ambiance was clean and modern and the hostess/waitress was lovely and so kind. Coconut lamb curry was amazing as was palak paneer and chicken lentil curry. Will definitely be stopping here again!

Yelp
Got take out so can't vouch for indoors. The food was delicious. They had some offers so I was able to get a free gulab jamun. The gulab jamun was fresh and spongy which I loved. I got three curries: chicken, paneer, and lamb or goat. The paneer dish was my favorite. Will definitely be ordering from here again. They do ask you what spice level you'd like so that was helpful. I got medium and that was too spicy for me. I would recommend everyone get mild.

Yelp
Hmm I went here because I was craving some Indian food and this place had really good reviews. We walked in and there was only one other person in the restaurant, and the door was propped open even though it was freezing out. The ambiance was a bit awkward, with a ton of fake flowers and quiet music. The food was disappointing, but it might have just been what we got. I tried the biryani fried rice and a spicy chicken curry. The chicken in the curry was horrible, it was pretty much just bones and cartilage with hardly any meat on any piece. The rice was alright, but nothing amazing. We also ordered some naan which was as expected. Overall really not impressed with the food and I would avoid getting any chicken curry dish, unless you really like bones.

Yelp
Random save that we wanted to explore and my goodness was it so good. Upbeat music fill the room, and pleasant looking leis surround the interior. Servers are SO friendly. I think this place seems like it's owned by a family, but that is a guess. The food here is extraordinary! The chicken tikka masala is just BURSTING WITH FLAVOR. It's addicting. Addicting to the point my stomach BURSTS at its seams to want more. Service is very friendly as they tried to explain alllll the different items on their menu! They were very kind to explain things to an ignorant person like meeee. The aloo naan has much aloo. The garlic naan, just get it with that butter. BUTTER ME UP!!!!!! Yessir. Yes mam. Yes you. Butter that thang. Price is affordable for sure. They have a lunch special that I wish I could have tried because I LOVE gulab jamun. Next time. .... Actually, live update. As I wrote this review, in the restaurant, I ordered it. This filled up two people soo much. As you can see, not much to hide from my reviews. Just to be aware, even if you say mild, there is a little kick. But this place is so so so so good. As you can see from our plates, nothing is left.

Michelle I.

Yelp
Me and my friend stumbled upon this place and we decided to give it a try, the food here was so delicious!! The service was great and attentive which I really appreciated. We ordered the butter chicken with rice and naan, all of the dishes we ordered were great. I will definitely be coming back to this spot!

Yelp
I visited with family at dinner time (6:30pm) on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was empty and the only staff member visible was the host who was also our waitress and cashier. Our table of six ordered: Appetizers: -Veggie Pakora $7.95 -Samosa Chaat $8.95 Curries: -Butter Chicken $15.95 -Chicken Karahi $15.95 -Palak Paneer $13.95 Naan bread/Rice: -Assorted Naan $12.95 (plain, garlic, onion, and aloo) -Lamb Keema Naan $5.95 -Plain Basmati Rice $3.00 (each bowl can easily feed at least two people) My thoughts are that: the restaurant was cold and service was very slow (we were the only party at the restaurant), I enjoyed the Samosa Chaat and could have skipped the Veggie Pakora (oddly shaped (very) dark brown fritters), the assortment of naan bread and rice was plenty for the number of curries we ordered and I wouldn't order the Chicken Karahi (my least favorite of the three) again if I returned. I did want to rate my experience 3.5 stars and rounded up instead. At the end of our meal, I felt the curry portions were on the smaller end and depending on the size of (and how hungry) your party is, deciding between at least two curries should be a good number to begin with. The restaurant charged a 20% large party (six people) surcharge and discounted 10% off the bill since we paid with cash and restaurant traffic had not picked up much besides another couple showing up to dine in as well as maybe three to four takeaway orders being picked up.

Yelp
Remind me never to get Indian food-- or any food, probably-- at 9pm. It was a dumb move on my part. I put in order in at 8pm and when I got there about 35min later they didn't even check the receipt to start making the order. They were also out of what indeed-- no biggie, can't control that too much. He said he'd throw in some extra stuff but really didn't. The chicken pakora was soft and had been sitting. I had food poisoning from their food for 12hrs straight. It was one of the worst cases of food poisoning I've had in a long time. Would not recommend at all.

Yelp
Yesterday we had a solid beef seekh kebab and chicken seekh kebab from Chaska. Both were great. I liked the beef a bit more. So glad we have this option close by!

Yelp
This was our second time coming here and we will be coming back again very soon. This is the best Indian food I've ever had in my entire life. Me and my family came here and we had the best service and the best food ever. If you're looking for a good Indian food, this is where you need to come because every other Indian food place is mid. This place is off the charts. Come over here for the service and for the best vibes and the best people and the best and also the best music.

Yelp
This restaurant is located right in the heart of Richmond district. There are plenty of metered parking spots in front and around the restaurant. If you're taking public transit, bus #38 Geary stops a block and half away from this establishment. The banner for this restaurant doesn't really stand out. It's located right next to a tattoo place. A friendly waiter greeted us right away upon entering this mom and pop restaurant. They do have an extensive menu. We ordered the chicken thali, steamed chicken momo, and the chicken tikka thali. The chicken thali and the chicken tikka thali are set meals, which came with basmati rice, plain naan, salad, and hot chai tea. The chicken thali had chicken curry and chana masala. The chicken tikka thali had chicken tikka masala and aloo saag. Both of these thali meals were $15.99 each, which is fairly reasonable. The steamed chicken momos were hot when they got to our table. They were so flavorful that we didn't really need to add much sauce to them. We waited for our food for around 25 minutes, which it was kind of long especially when we were the only customers there. However, it was totally worth the wait. All the food were freshly prepared with fresh ingredients, and they were very flavorful. They also gave generous portions. They sure take pride in their cooking. The waiter also provided excellent service. We will be back to try their tandoori and biryani.

Yelp
The food was wonderful! Everything came out very delicious and well presented. My friends and I ordered butter chicken, paneer palak, and lamb coconut curry along with some naan and rice on the side. The complementary mango lassi was tasty as well. The waitress was quick to refill our waters and communicate with us about our food which I really appreciated! The food took a little longer than expected to prepare but the wait was worth it. The restaurant itself was also beautifully decorated and had great lighting. When it came to the bill, they made it very easy to split and pay separately. Overall wonderful experience!

Yelp
We recently celebrated my mom's birthday at Chaska Restaurant in San Francisco, and I can't recommend this place enough! It's a family-owned restaurant, and you can feel the personal touch in everything they do. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel right at home. Our waiter greeted us warmly and provided some amazing recommendations from the menu. Every dish was phenomenal; with authentic Indian flavors that exceeded our expectations. We were blown away by how generous the portions were for the price, and everything was packed with flavor. What made the evening even more special was the personal touch from the owner. She came to our table, greeted us, and wished my mom a happy birthday! Even with the language barrier, my mom can feel her compassion. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and I noticed she made time to connect with other customers as well. At the end of the meal, they surprised my mom with a complimentary dessert for her birthday, which made her night even more memorable - especially as it was her first time trying Indian food, and I'm so happy she loved it! You can tell that a lot of heart has gone into every aspect of this restaurant from the food to the décor to the attentive service. It really reflects the care that the owner and her family put into their business. * I wish more people would come out and eat out with their loved ones more, it seems people are so busy working that they have fewer opportunities to slow down and take an hour to eat and talk together. *I noticed more people come and take out, but please come by and have a memorable experience here like we did at Chaska! Support a local business that truly values its customers. Delicious food, a warm atmosphere, and the welcoming nature make people feel instantly at home - what more can we ask for?

Yelp
Chaska Restaurant was almost a nod to earlier days: excellent service accompanied by delicious Indian food served in a simply decorated, intimate, and slightly charming space. The fact that I was also holding an expired Groupon (amount paid never expires) made the whole dining experience feel that much more well-priced and that - in addition to all of the above - is my happy place. Chaska Restaurant was a wholly happy experience. Lamb Biryani, shared by my party of two, was ample and topped with fried garlic flakes, a sign that someone in the kitchen knows what tastes good. A red curry paneer was equally delicious and, with the sauciness of the dish, practically begging for some naan with which to enjoy every spoonful. I left Chaska, got home, and purchased another Groupon which says a few things: I like a great deal, I can't wait to eat here again, and I want to sample far more widely from that menu than I did on this visit. Chaska; it's worthy of several return visits.

Yelp
This place is sooooo good! Came on a Friday night and was blown away at how delicious the food is. Service was amazing too. If you want to feel like an honored guest that is fed the very best Indian food imaginable, then go here. Run, don't walk. Also, get some food here before word gets out at how incredible this place is. I travelled 40 minutes across town to eat here and would happily travel more than an hour. Yum! Try the samosa chaat, it's next level. Chicken tikka kabob was juicy and perfect, curries were the best balance of flavors!

Yelp
Food tastes good and the restaurant always clean and tidy Meat portions are very small, it really needs to get a bit bigger. Chx Tandoori has too much food coloring, which is a bit offsetting, But it tastes good. Using paprika, Kashmiri red chili powder or deggi mirch to achieve colorful Tandoori is by far much pleasing to the eyes and tastier. Due to the lay out, the dinning area is bit stuffy, a stronger vents or open back door may improve it greatly. Service is fast but lacks small details like clean empty dishes and table quickly No check to the table which is a little odd for full service restaurant. Recommend it and will go back.

Alfred S.

Yelp
This place is amazing. This is probably the first restaurant where I want to give a 6+ star review. Starting off with veggie samosas and daal soup for our appetizer was perfect. The daal soup had the option to customize the spice and medium was perfect. It was spicy but also so flavorful. If you like spice it had a great kick, but if you like spice that has flavor and isn't just spicy to hurt, this was perfect for that. After that, we knew the chicken Tikka masala and the paneer karahi, both medium, were going to be delicious. Everything was well worth the wait and just so flavorful. The roti was also delicious and I wish we had ordered more. The service was excellent and the music wasn't too loud in the restaurant. Out of the many indian restaurants I have been to, this has to be one of my favorite ones to date. The staff are all amazing and I look forward to coming back as soon as possible.

Yelp
Went to this restaurant and this time I went with my partner. Bubbles was an excellent waitress who was very friendly and a good conversationalist. The food was very good. The manager/owner gave my partner spices which he added to his food. I will certainly be back with friends.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
Goat karahi is one of my favorite dishes and kind of hard to find around these parts. Chaska makes it well, and we also really enjoyed our egg plant curry and spinach curries. But, and I think others have alluded to this, this place is pretty slow and you have to be prepared to wait. Fine if your'e not in a rush or starving but you should know ahead of time. All that being said, this place would probably be great for takeout/delivery where I think the slowness is less of an issue. I'd certainly go back and deal with the wait, I'd just come with that baked in.
google avatar

Ina G.

Yelp
I gather that they might be better for takeout than dine in. I couldn't understand where any of their stars came from. My dining-in experience mirrors that of several other reviews-- it was empty with no atmosphere or music and the staff didn't have it together at all. Ordered a Thali and was informed (after the order was already in) that the tandoori is broken and there would be paratha instead of naan. Then, I was informed that the spring roll appetizer couldn't be made because the temperature just wasn't getting hot enough. Finally, the Thali combo came out but I was told that the chef made the wrong curry for the combo and was offered to change it. The food was passable but far from delicious-- the paneer curry in the Thali was overly tangy and not sweet at all. I have never encountered this many mistakes in one day anywhere-- at the least, if you are having a bad day, say so upfront before allowing the orders to be placed and then doing a bait-and-switch.

Yelp
It's funny - despite how much my friends and I enjoy Indian food, we don't get it all that often. Which is a bummer, considering there are so many good Indian joints in the Bay Area. So, of course it makes perfect sense that when we finally have it again, it's for a farewell dinner for one of them that's moving abroad. I just hope it doesn't take another one of them moving to get Indian food again after this... In all seriousness, I actually had no idea that Chaska had taken over Men Oh's long vacant space, but I assume it must've happened not too long ago as the decor looks mostly the same. It was also weird to see that the menu has already been edited so heavily, with most items having been repriced and a few having been removed. However, just about everything they still have - from their dozens of curries to their naans and biryanis - all sounded so appealing! -- MANGO LASSI - Yogurt & Mango Milkshake...$4 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=VrP6NR29xPdNQ53H-ScKVQ) Definitely one of the better ones I've had. It could've used a bit more mango, but it was super smooth and refreshing. -- VEGETARIAN SAMOSAS - Deep Fried Stuffed Patties with Mashed Potatoes and Green Peas Served with Mint and Tamarind Chutneys...$5 (Two Pieces) (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=M1rFsmrSmd14swKHHLDbIQ) Not amazing, but not bad either. We got two orders and I was impressed by how plump/full they were, though the dough was a smidge dry. -- VEGGIE PAKORA FRITTERS - Deep Fried Battered Veggies with Spices and Served with Mint and Tamarind Chutneys...$5 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=CWS-R16R6eCQdPKt-Mgmog) The coloring was dark, but these tasted great. There was a fair amount of veggies in each piece too, which were crispy and not super oily. -- GARLIC NAAN with Minced Garlic, Cilantro and Herbs...$3.50 -- ONION NAAN with Minced Onion, Cilantro and Herbs...$3.50 -- ALOO NAAN stuffed with Spiced Chopped Chicken Tikka and Cilantro...$4 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=li5s0omgX5u6vngsLs7PEg) All three were so soft and chewy! The Garlic Naan was pretty garlicky, but the the onion one didn't taste like much. As for the Aloo Naan, the portion I had didn't have much in it, but it seemed okay. -- LAMB SEEKH KABAB - Ground Lamb Blended with Herbs and Spices...$13 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=28JCmqhmQgsxR-T0oJ4jSg) Pretty solid. The lamb was juicy and complemented well by the herbs and spices. The best part? The menu lists two pieces, but it actually comes with four! -- CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA - Boneless Charcoal BBQ Chicken Cooked in Tikka Creamy Curry...$14.50 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=7MJxTtW22TNwemlfbal-jg) This was AWESOME. The chunks of chicken were big and the curry was delicious. I also liked how creamy it was, though, my friend felt the opposite. -- FISH CURRY - Tilapia Cooked with Herbs and Chaska's Fish Spices in Curry Sauce...$15 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=a01RD4qvUqak_1cp78zlTA) My first time trying Indian fish curry and it was delish! The fish was moist, plentiful, and held the flavors of the curry well. -- LAMB VINDALOO - Lamb and Potatoes Cooked with Spices and Vindaloo Curry...$14 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=dpo8C5B_fXMLZ2dFxdyfrA) Ehh. The pieces of lamb were a little chewy, but the curry itself wasn't bad and the potatoes were pillowy soft. -- CHICKEN LEG TANDOORI - Chicken Leg Marinated with a Tandoori Blend of Spices in Yogurt...$13 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=Dg76y9hIp2_lwVCKG6LQgA) While the pieces were smaller than I would've hoped for, they were no less flavorful. The chicken was tender and had a nice char on the outside. -- CHICKEN BIRYANI - Basmati Rice, House Special Biryani Spices Cooked on Slow Fire with Chicken Biryani Korma...$13 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=5jHJuRWs8Ydp3zl2-yC9dQ) I didn't have much of this, but while the chicken was fine, I didn't care much for the rice (felt grainy). As far as service goes, our food came out fast and the fellow who took our order was very friendly. I also liked how, despite their relatively small size, they have tables for groups both large and small. Layer on how easy parking is around here and Chaska is super convenient for picking up to-go orders or to dine-in! Since I don't get Indian food as often as I'd like, I don't have much to compare Chaska against. However, while they're more four stars for me, I can see why folks have given five. I certainly wouldn't mind coming back, though I might be more inclined to try other Indian spots nearby first!

Yelp
After our YMCA class today, a friend recommended Chaska to celebrate the belated birthday of another friend. It was after 2 pm and we were the only customers. The dining room looked nice and clean with hanging decors. They have the offer of spending $50 plus total table cost, we get a free tall glass of Mango Lassi drink. The three of us shared the drink with separate short glasses. For appetizer, we ordered Veggie Samosa with green (hot) and red (mild) sauce. For a family style dining, we got Tandoori Platter with assorted platter of chicken leg, chicken seekh kebab, chicken tikka boti & prawns. We also ordered Vegetable Thali. The food is so delicious. It has been so many years since I had Indian food. The young staff server, Samara, is so nice explaining to us about the food on the menu where they don't serve hot dishes. She said they can prepare mild food request as well. After the food was served, the owner/chef passed by. Samara said it was her father. As we were eating, more customers came in. They have also the offer when paying in cash, you save 10% off your bill. Chaska is now on my list of good restaurants and I don't mind returning. I recommend eating at Chaska, an Indian/Pakistani restaurant.

Yelp
I really think I've found my go-to destination to fulfill all of my Indian/Pakistani cravings!! I can see myself ordering from here or dining in again many, many times, and trying out all of the unique offerings that they have on their menu. And I feel even more excited to come back especially because of their accessible prices and the warm service from the staff--it's a family run operation, and I love that I'm able to support mom-and-pop/small family businesses this way. Ordered the mango lassi (so, so refreshing and creamy without being overly indulgent), eggplant curry, and coconut chicken curry, as well as an order of roti and onion naan. I loved that their dishes had that very home-y taste and feel; it tasted like I'd gone over to a friend's place and was having dinner made by their family!

Yelp
Super good Indian food with good portions!! We'll definitely be back. Our favorites were the Garlic Naan and the chicken Palak. The garlic naan was so crispy yet tender and soft! One of the best I've had. The chicken palak was also amazing. It had two bone thingys of chicken in it and the spinach flavor was so good and creamy! Sometimes they do get busy so you might have to get their attention by standing up and going to the counter, but otherwise the service was really good and they seemed like such nice folks who cared about the food they serve. It looks like it used to be a sushi restaurant and undergoing changes to the ambiance! Just casual spot with good food :)

Yelp
i just ordered from Chawla for a second time and this place is fantastic. Danny the owner delivered the food himself and is a just a very pleasant person. the food itself was really delicious. the ground meat (keema) tastes so authentic. the goat biryani was addictive: they even took personal asks into consideration. i asked them to make the bbq chicken ie tandoori chicken completely non spiced for the kids and they obliged definitely recommend this pakistani place for dine in

Yelp
Clean and nice ambiance. Food taste is ok. Maybe because I am pampered by the holes in the wall in mission. Service is ok. Beware that the prices of the thali's that are in multiple pictures have increased significantly, I'd say $5 more roughly. Used a coupon of $40 and not sure why I got charged for $32 for a bill total of $64. Didn't realize this until I left. Felt like being cheated on.

Yelp
New Indian and Pakistani Halal restaurant in the Inner Richmond. Walked by recently and saw that Chaska opened at what used to be a ramen place that was emptied for a long period of time. Glad to see a new business in the neighborhood. Certainly piqued our interest. We used our phones to view the QR code menu, ordered, and paid before sitting down. What we got: chicken tikka masala, nihari beef, garlic naan and chai. The owner was super friendly and told us they have only been opened a week ago, then being extremely kind, he gifted us a plate of basmati rice (ate there) and two gulab jamun (we took to-go). Everything smells deliciously aromatic. The chicken tikka masala - tender chicken, delicious, tomatoe-y Goes so well with the basmati rice. Hb said that it's like having this delicious tomato soup with chicken in it. The nihari beef (slow cooked boneless beef with bone marrow, garnished with cilantro, ginger and a slice of lemon) was fantastic. Slightly spicy due to the ginger and spices, beefy brothy sauce, tender beef pieces, and a bit citrusy from the lemon slice that refreshes the palate. This pairs so well with the freshly made naan. Although we didn't regret getting the garlic naan, we felt that this dish would be just as good with regular naan as not to compete with the other spices and flavors. The chai was very good. And so was the gulab jamun that was packed for to-go and we didn't have until we got home. Besides offering chicken, beef, fish, and veggies dishes, this restaurant has an extensive menu on goat and lamb dishes. Something I don't often see. Although we weren't adventurous enough to try those this time, we will probably try them in the near future. In summary: Tasty & delicious food, generous and kind people, and clean restaurant. Give them a try!

Yelp
Flavorful Indian/Pakistani dishes! We had the chicken wings, chicken biryani, goat curry, garlic naan and samosa served with 2 dips of chutney, tamarind and mint, coriander with yogurt. Everything was fresh. The biryani was so spicy that we quickly subdued it by drinking water and eating the naan. Nice ambience, good service, street parking. 10% off if you pay in cash. We'll be back to try other dishes! Chaska mean good taste. Good to know they also serve Halal meat.

Yelp
Been here a few times and love it! It's operated by a nice family, the food is so good and feels "homemade" in a great way. The decor & music are also fun for dine-in :)

Yelp
Ordered delivery here tonight. We ordered the lamb bhuna and the baingan bharta. Both dishes were very flavorful and hit the spot on a cold windy night. However, the lamb dish had barely any meat, maybe 3 oz and was mostly just oil. For a $15+ dish, we were quite disappointed and hungry still at the end of the meal.

Yelp
Food was great even though it was take out. I WOULD eat here though because the dining room is quiet and clean and wasn't crowded when I went.

Yelp
Was recommended by a friend to come here and I had the best experience last night with my friend. I'm half Indian and Pakistani and this cuisine is second nature to me, so I'm a bit picky... but everything satisfied my tastebuds. I unfortunately forgot to take pictures of the food because I was so eager to eat and it smelled amazing, but I got the following. - Mango Lassi: To DIE FOR. So frikin Good - Veggie Biryani: Yummy but a bit spicier than I thought it'd be. I love spicy though! it's a bit more on the wet side for a biriyani. Also included raita (yogurt sauce) so to me that's a huge plus. Would love to try their chicken biriyani next! - Daal Makhani: so good, perfect blend of flavors, my friend finished the dish almost instantly - Naan: so crispy but light, no burned areas and you can tell it was made fresh. Literally craving it as I write this - Chicken Vindaloo: chicken literally melted off the bone. Wish it was spicier like a true vindaloo but the flavors were so nice and it reminded me a bit to home - Ras Malai: I was in heaven. Such an amazing blend of flavors which didn't overpower and it was not sugary/too sweet either so it made it all the better. Great finish to the meal The restaurant had a relaxing yet quiet ambiance with some light (but not too loud music) and it felt slightly romantic which the yellow huge and lighting. We came around 9pm on a Thursday so there weren't a ton of people which made it even better. Additionally, the prices were really nice for SF and made it so worth it. You can tell they are kind and honest people and I would love to support them some more! Highly recommend and will be coming here again!!

Yelp
(I chose this restaurant through Groupon) The decor was simple our waitress was polite but she did not have it together the restaurant was empty except for a party of ten ahead of us that had already placed their order, the cooks were evidently having issues. After we ordered the waitress could have said just a heads up sorry for the wait it's going to be a while longer but she didn't say anything like that just smiled and gave us more water. Another two top came in they were seated  ordered and they finally said they had enough and they left before receiving their food, our food finally came and it was pretty much a disappointment the chicken curry was flavorful but full of bones never have we've had it served like this before, tandoori platter was lackluster and flavorful garlic but flat naan. I generally let things slide I've been in the food service biz for over 30 yrs I know how the system should work and this was a failure. I still tipped appropriately before the Groupon discount were made. The only mention of "Bone-ln Chicken" Is on a menu from a year ago the current menu doesn't state bone-in chicken! Also before I buy Groupons I always cross check it with Yelp and Google Map reviews and photos the pics on Google maps of the food didn't match what was served..

Yelp
I've greatly enjoyed the food here each time and they always have great service. The curries are always so full of flavor and each bite feels as if you've been embraced by the spices themselves. I've never had beef nihari before this but upon trying it here I found it to really be to my liking as I love bone marrow. Each time I'll always have to order an extra serving of rice as the curry just goes so well that it's easy to forget how much you're eating.

Yelp
Ordered two dishes to go as "mild" while passing through San Francisco. I repeated mild multiple times when ordering. When we got to Marin, we found that both dishes were so spicy hot that they were completely and entirely inedible for both of us. By then, we were 20 miles away. We had to go back out and get dinner elsewhere. A complete waste of time and money.

Yelp
Dal was excellent and the mixed vegetable curry, Overall would say food was very good, and portions were big and pricing decent. Service was great! They were very kind and attentive. So do give them a visit

Yelp
Probably the best Indian food I've had in years! Not only were the staff extremely friendly and helpful, but very observant too! I didn't have to ask for anything, they always knew the perfect time to come ask me. The food. OMG. The food! I had the lamb tikka masala, a mango lassi, and garlic naan. First off, everything was so fresh!! The flavor on each item was spectacular!! Seriously. I'm not over exaggerating. The mango lassi, let me tell you, after a full day of walking, was so refreshing! The texture was perfect. If you're in the area, or even if you're not, come give this place a try!!

Yelp
Wonderful! The food is great as is the service. Can be quite spicey if you're looking for this, or just full of flavor. Their recommendations had me trying new dishes and now I have a small problem - what the heck to try next. Highest recommendation.

Yelp
After seeing so many positive reviews for a new Indian place I was excited to try, but was left very disappointed. Ordered the chicken tikka masala, basmati rice, and aloo naan. Perhaps it was a bad day, or maybe take-out is not the way to go, but this was the worst chicken tikka masala I've ever had. It was sour and not creamy at all. I saw little white clumps in the sauce, sort of like the cream just curdled or the sauce broke. I tried half my curry and just threw the rest away. The aloo naan was not as good as the ones that you can get from the Naan N Curry on Irving. It didn't have a lot of potatoes stuffed inside. Such a shame, was really excited to try a new place, but this just isn't going to compete with neighborhood gems like Noori.

Yelp
Chaska is great and I love how they have many different items available. I was disappointed that they ran out of butter chicken since that is a staple for Indian food so my boyfriend and I went with the chicken tikka masala, lamb tikka masala, and chicken biryani. The lamb was succulent and had no signs of gaminess. The tikka masala was stupendous and was filled with delicious aromatics that you could taste within the sauce. The chicken was also delicious but the meat was a bit tougher which was disappointing. The sauce was a bit spicier than the lamb's tikka masala which gave it a nice heat. The chicken biryani was my least favorite item since there were a lot of seeds and inedible items mixed within the rice. Understandably it was to help enhance the flavor of the rice, but some of the herbs textures made it unappetizing. Overall, pretty good addition to the Richmond district for if you are craving Indian food.

Yelp
Love that they provide the chai for free! Was nice hot and milky. The curries we got and the biryani were quite excellent! Super huge portions enough for two and I like that the flavor was all the way thru. Favorite was the lamb.

Yelp
We stopped in to order takeaway and while waiting we had a starter, Veggie Pakora served with tamarind and mint chutney. Absolutely delicious. We cleaned the plate of dip and pakora. Our takeaway meal was my favorite, chicken tikka masala, my hubby ordered palak paneer, he loves his spinach. We also ordered garlic naan and raita. The most unusual delicious flavors in the raita. Everything was outstanding. We seriously have not tasted such homemade, tasty Indian anywhere. I highly recommend Chaska for fresh, tasty, outstanding Indian food. service was very good.

Yelp
Great food and service! It's always so delicious. I love the garlic naan and Jhol Momo (Chichen/Veg) I also recommend the lamb curry! It's so good. I can't wait to come back
