It's funny - despite how much my friends and I enjoy Indian food, we don't get it all that often. Which is a bummer, considering there are so many good Indian joints in the Bay Area. So, of course it makes perfect sense that when we finally have it again, it's for a farewell dinner for one of them that's moving abroad. I just hope it doesn't take another one of them moving to get Indian food again after this...
In all seriousness, I actually had no idea that Chaska had taken over Men Oh's long vacant space, but I assume it must've happened not too long ago as the decor looks mostly the same. It was also weird to see that the menu has already been edited so heavily, with most items having been repriced and a few having been removed. However, just about everything they still have - from their dozens of curries to their naans and biryanis - all sounded so appealing!
-- MANGO LASSI - Yogurt & Mango Milkshake...$4

Definitely one of the better ones I've had. It could've used a bit more mango, but it was super smooth and refreshing.
-- VEGETARIAN SAMOSAS - Deep Fried Stuffed Patties with Mashed Potatoes and Green Peas Served with Mint and Tamarind Chutneys...$5 (Two Pieces)

Not amazing, but not bad either. We got two orders and I was impressed by how plump/full they were, though the dough was a smidge dry.
-- VEGGIE PAKORA FRITTERS - Deep Fried Battered Veggies with Spices and Served with Mint and Tamarind Chutneys...$5

The coloring was dark, but these tasted great. There was a fair amount of veggies in each piece too, which were crispy and not super oily.
-- GARLIC NAAN with Minced Garlic, Cilantro and Herbs...$3.50
-- ONION NAAN with Minced Onion, Cilantro and Herbs...$3.50
-- ALOO NAAN stuffed with Spiced Chopped Chicken Tikka and Cilantro...$4

All three were so soft and chewy! The Garlic Naan was pretty garlicky, but the the onion one didn't taste like much. As for the Aloo Naan, the portion I had didn't have much in it, but it seemed okay.
-- LAMB SEEKH KABAB - Ground Lamb Blended with Herbs and Spices...$13
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=28JCmqhmQgsxR-T0oJ4jSg)
Pretty solid. The lamb was juicy and complemented well by the herbs and spices. The best part? The menu lists two pieces, but it actually comes with four!
-- CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA - Boneless Charcoal BBQ Chicken Cooked in Tikka Creamy Curry...$14.50
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=7MJxTtW22TNwemlfbal-jg)
This was AWESOME. The chunks of chicken were big and the curry was delicious. I also liked how creamy it was, though, my friend felt the opposite.
-- FISH CURRY - Tilapia Cooked with Herbs and Chaska's Fish Spices in Curry Sauce...$15
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=a01RD4qvUqak_1cp78zlTA)
My first time trying Indian fish curry and it was delish! The fish was moist, plentiful, and held the flavors of the curry well.
-- LAMB VINDALOO - Lamb and Potatoes Cooked with Spices and Vindaloo Curry...$14
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=dpo8C5B_fXMLZ2dFxdyfrA)
Ehh. The pieces of lamb were a little chewy, but the curry itself wasn't bad and the potatoes were pillowy soft.
-- CHICKEN LEG TANDOORI - Chicken Leg Marinated with a Tandoori Blend of Spices in Yogurt...$13
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=Dg76y9hIp2_lwVCKG6LQgA)
While the pieces were smaller than I would've hoped for, they were no less flavorful. The chicken was tender and had a nice char on the outside.
-- CHICKEN BIRYANI - Basmati Rice, House Special Biryani Spices Cooked on Slow Fire with Chicken Biryani Korma...$13
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/chaska-restaurant-san-francisco?select=5jHJuRWs8Ydp3zl2-yC9dQ)
I didn't have much of this, but while the chicken was fine, I didn't care much for the rice (felt grainy).
As far as service goes, our food came out fast and the fellow who took our order was very friendly. I also liked how, despite their relatively small size, they have tables for groups both large and small. Layer on how easy parking is around here and Chaska is super convenient for picking up to-go orders or to dine-in!
Since I don't get Indian food as often as I'd like, I don't have much to compare Chaska against. However, while they're more four stars for me, I can see why folks have given five. I certainly wouldn't mind coming back, though I might be more inclined to try other Indian spots nearby first!
