Château d'Origny

"In the same village as the famous Troisgros, this 16C château with its ochre-coloured façade cuts a fine figure, as does its elegant restaurant, where terracotta floor tiles surround the stone fireplace. Gifted chef Julien Laval, after stints working with the likes of Serge Vieira in Chaudes Aigues and finishing as a finalist in the French dessert championships, is thriving here. You just need to taste his smoked eel cream crisp, multicoloured radishes and turnips with horseradish to tell: his ceps, French toast with sweet chestnuts and pumpkin flan; Bresse chicken, waffle oozing with Montbrison cheese or his Basque cake with quince from the orchard and hibiscus flower jelly." - Michelin Inspector

Loved our stay here! The chateau has been well renovated in a traditional style and the room was very comfortable, big bed, big bathroom with a jacuzzi, we were really able to relax and enjoy our time here. The owner greeted us and was present during the dinner service which I found very nice. The 7 course menu d’Origny was delicious and an excellent value considering the quality. The staff are super accommodating and professional, highly recommended!

Accidentally booked this Chateau D'Origny near Roanne rather than the one we wanted near Nevers and it was too late to change before we realised the mistake our friends had made when doing a joint booking. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Sunday, just as lunch was finishing. It smelt wonderful. Such a shame then that the restaurant was closed on a Sunday evening, meaning we'd have to venture out by car to somewhere else. All that being said, the place is charming and unusual. Bought to stock the contents of many years of collecting fine furniture by the Belgian owners, this place oozes charm. The fabulous welcome from all the staff made up for us missing the chance to eat there. As we were nearly 2 hours away from where we needed to be Monday morning, they kindly agreed to serve breakfast an hour early at 7am - and WHAT A SPREAD. Huge quantities of bread, pastries and other snacks which proved too much to eat - so they boxed it up for us to eat for lunch! There are only 5 bedrooms, but there are huge and beautifully furnished with all kinds of memorabilia. Massive bathroom, with original tomette tiles and deep bath. Comfy seating area and massive bed. Really worth a detour... just not as much as we did! :)

We stayed for 1 night travelling through this part of France. Our room, the French suite, was huge and very comfortable. ||The restaurant is amazing. We enjoyed the 6 course tasting menu with wine pairings, highly recommended. ||The staff are very helpful too.

Worth a one night visit for the superb Contemporary restaurant staffed with highly skilled & creative chefs. Expensive (£179 for 2 inc wine), but in London or Paris, a meal of this standard would have cost twice as much. Tipped to gain a Michelin star.|Not sure how to describe the B&B side of the business, or our bedroom!!|Sadly the lady of the house was away & poor Werner, her husband, was trying to do everything &, sorry to say, but we thought that was too much, although he tried hard! |He did very kindly allow us to plug our electric vehicle into his electricity overnight for a complementary “charge up”.|However overall his focus seemed to be on his outstanding restaurant!||As for our room/suite. |Werner had rather persuaded us on the telephone a couple of months earlier to take his best/most expensive room. (The Colonial suite) |And indeed it turned out to be vast, but rather resembled the V&A museum, very amply furnished with beautiful antique furniture. |But from a functional point of view it was not up to modern day standards in our view:|1. no simple walk-in shower, (as we requested). We did not like the jacuzzi which we found difficult to get in & out of, which was over- complicated & a bit unstable|2. no charging plugs in convenient places for i-phones or our electric toothbrush |3. No soap, but Werner got us (just) one mini one, at our request.|4. A soft mattress that dipped in the middle.|5. A thick layer of dust under the 4 poster bed.||All of this forgiven by most, who gave 5 stars, but to be honest, we would only have stayed the single night to enjoy the restaurant, had we known all of the drawbacks in advance.

The chateau is lovely - and the restaurant is superb. Modern French cooking - as good as it gets and far far better than most. Every dish was perfect; the staff were charming; and the restaurant interior is a pleasing contemporary contrast to the hotel’s old-world charm. Michelin have not yet discovered it - I suggest you get there before they do

This is more like a small hotel with a Michelin star restaurant. ROOM: Our countess room was nice but an outdoor lantern attracted flies and made it impossible to keep the window open at night. Strange bugs entered the room. One looked like a centipede with very long legs that wiggled after I smashed its body. Would be nice with a fridge four our souvenir food. The bathroom door did not close properly. The owner told us about the history of the house. It would have been nice with more pictures from the renovation. FOOD: Very competent new take on French classics. I really like how the chef had put in a lot of effort on the accompanying vegetables. Very pretty display and mouthfeel. Interesting that the chef puts more effort on the cheap vegetables than the expensive protein. I found the turbot filet dull and overcooked, but the vegetable packet full of flavours and textures. The cheese s were very nice. The innovation in this restaurant is within the constraints of French cuisine. Hence more conservative than many other one star restaurants. The restaurant does not feel like a chambres d'hotes, but like a proper restaurant. I would have appreciated some local wines by the glass. It would also be nice to have the same theme of the manor house and the restaurant. Like deconstructed, totally renovated, and put together anew. Could apply to manor house and food. Service could have been more attentive.

Thé owners were charming and welcoming. We booked 2 suites and celebrated a special birthday 🎂 with another couple. The rooms were clean, well appointed and spacious. Loved the exposed beams and 4 meter ceilings. They even made the most delicious little macaroons cakes as a surprise for us. Dinner was in the spacious kitchen . All in all a good weekend.

We just had a one night stay at the chateau but what a wonderful stay. Our room was big, comfy and so pretty. Everything we needed and more just so beautifully done. Everything was very clean and you could tell the owners care about your experience. So warm and welcoming. We had dinner at the chateau and it was a 5-course meal that was of the highest quality. fresh, flavoursome and pleasing to the eye. Such a fabulous experience that I would highly recommend if you are in the area and need a special place to stay.
