In-Person Iftar: Where Montreal’s Muslim Community Goes to Break Fast During Ramadan | Eater Montreal

"“We want to have something different for our daily customers,” says Hassanin Salih, owner of the Persian-Iraqi restaurant Château Kabab’s downtown and Litle Italy locations. Meal deals for Iftar include complementary dates and yogurt or juice, and shorbat addas, a red lentil soup, with new menu items on offer every day. Salih shared some of the traditional dishes he’s planning with Eater: Musakhan dajaj (chicken with sumac), kabsa lamb, a rice dish redolent with onions and warm spices, molokhia stew with chicken, and dawood basha, a meatball stew with green beans potatoes, always served with rice." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

2 Dozen of Montreal’s Best Middle Eastern Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Despite an unexciting exterior, Château Kabab is a pleasant surprise, and one that lives up to its name. Its titular kebabs are reliably delicious, and the atmosphere is bright and airy, with a cheerful blue-and-gold colour scheme. Prices are reasonable, making it popular with students." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Beef Kabab was so delicious. We ordered one plate and one wrap. Both were great and we enjoyed.

Was very excited to try this restaurant as the food looked very good, when we arrived there no one came to take our order for around 10 min, I had to go ask them to take our order. After asking to order, the lady serving us seemed to be annoyed taking our order. We did not get water till around 20-25 min after arriving. The food itself was pretty good I had the chicken and beef kabab with rice and batata harra and my friend had the chicken shawarma with fries. When the food arrived I had just gotten rice not rice and potatoes like I asked but they brought potatoes afterwards. Other tables had gotten bread with their food, we did not. In the end the service was very bad the lady was impolite and would not respond after a simple please and thank you. The food is worth it but hopefully the service isn’t like that all the time.

Google
After we arrived at the restaurant, the place wasn't super busy, but the staff forgot that we even sat there, I guess. After we ordered our food, we had waited FOREVER before our order was ready. The food was alright. It wasn't as hyped to be honest. I personally wouldn't try it again or recommend it to friends.

Google
This is hands down the best kebab spot in Montreal when it comes to price, quality, quantity, and taste. I got the mixed chicken and beef Persian kebab, served with grilled tomatoes, marinated onions, bread, and pickles on the side. The total came to just $45 after tax, and it can easily feed up to five people! For that price, you'd end up with smaller portions of unhealthy, factory-made food from McDonald's. Go for this instead—it's not only delicious but also a healthier choice.

Google
Ordered the Half lamb and rice for a dinner party. It was phenomenal. It was the second time we try as first time we were invited and they had it. Super delicious. Great portion. Highly recommended when you are hosting a group

Yelp
This is an AWESOME restaurant! I made reservations for 70 people for an iftar. Great people, excellent food! We half the mixed grill, salmon and veggie platters with the hummus and rice and a bunch of other stuff. Not spicy, just the right blend of flavors. This is the place to go!

Yelp
This is played out like a cafeteria buffet vibes with waiter taking your order and bring it out. You'll be troubled to try to get your own drinks and napkins if need when needed the staffing is low.. not much catering to your needs.. delay on the food is common as you are packed and limited with seating options.. it might have been due to the holiday week to be short staffed and lack in service. The food was fair we have tasted much better and warmer food.. some dishes came 30+ minutes late and cold. So for us it was a poor choice on Christmas Day. As a lot of places were closed and over packed with reservations.. the stars are for having seats.. and well decorated plus the fair food options with good pricing. Lost of stars was due to short staffing & cold food.

Yelp
Loved the baghali polo & lamb shanks. The beef kebab was great as well, but the chicken kebab could be better. The rice with the kebabs were pretty dry though. Food quantity was good for the price. Service was amazing! They provided dates to break our fast since its ramadan and we visited during iftar. I will definitely go back to try out more of their dishes.

Yelp
For the available options while visiting Montreal in terms if persian restaurants, this was the better choice. Good selections on the menu, but just about the typical you'd find at any other persian restaurant, so nothing special or fancy, but the flavours are certainly there, and the atmosphere can use a little bit of a facelift!

Desmond W.

Yelp
This is an amazing place definitely one of the best in Montreal. Me and my friend come here upwards of 3 times a week and every time the food is amazing always being consistent with great prices and unreal portions always being a steady hearty meal for any occasion truly is one the hidden gems in Montreal. Definitely recommend the service is really good as well very friendly all the time. And as well the ambiance it is a very welcoming spot.

Ernesto B.

Yelp
Very good food all the time. My favorite spot in Montreal for affordable good food. The shawarma chicken bowl is my favorite.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this Persian restaurant since indoor dining finally opened back up in Montreal. Unfortunately this place did not live up to expectations. They don't use real saffron, just saffron food coloring. My husband and I both got extremely sick right after eating here. Honestly I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Huge disappointment.
google avatar

Alireza Z.

Yelp
Tried their 'special' dish, Quazi with Okra sauce. Food arrived almost cold; lamb had almost no marination with a lot of pure fat on the shank and had an unpleasant taste and smell. Side salad was a bit chemical tasting, small, and not very fresh. Okra sauce, my first time ever trying, was cold, sour and not interesting. Placed the order by Uber Eats for two blocks away! I used to occasionally dine in here with friends before COVID19. Gave it another chance after a disappointing lamb kebab a few weeks ago through UE. Extremely disappointed now and won't try it for a couple years at least! It's sad because it used to be one of my favorite ME restaurants close to me!

Yelp
I found this place through the Yelp app when I visited Canada. We had gone to the museum and wanted to get something to eat walking distance. They serve sheesh kobobs and Mediterranean food, plus the pictures looked nice. We got there and the place looked a little shady from the outside, We almost left, but it was cold, and we were already there so, what the heck? I'm so glad we didn't leave, the food was amazing!! And so cheap, it was such a treat. We ordered a full meal combo that came with soup, salad, rice, fries, rice, humus (fresh!) pita and kebobs. It was amazing. Our server was efficient. He didn't speak English that well, but was able to take our order. Food came fast. Decor was not quite as pretty as it looks in the pictures, but it was clean and cozy. Lighting and angles are everything LOL, but do give this place a try if you're in the area, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Situated on Guy street, it's a combination of Iraqi, Persian and Lebanese food. It has two floors; the main sitting area is on the second floor, the grills is on the first. I had their lamb kabab. It was decent. Nothing too special. The meat was juicy and well spiced. The rice was good. For the price you pay you get a decent amount. I've had better Persian food to be honest but it was still good. It's a quiet place and pretty cozyThe waiters were nice; the service was fast. Overall it was a nice quiet place; good for after work eat out or just on a lazy day.

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick bite and ordered their Lentil Soup with Pita and a Special which had Chicken & Beef Kebab with Rice. We also ordered some Hummus on the side. The location is great, but the restaurant is very basic. It's good for a quick bite or take away. However the service made up for the basic space as they are friendly, quick and very accommodating. Food is surprisingly excellent especially the Kebabs!! And inexpensive. Will definitely drop by again, when in the area next time!

Yelp
Always wanted to try this place! I heard their kababs are the best! We were hanging around Concordia; so I asked my friend if we can go there; my friend has been here few times. Nothing fancy inside. Regular tables and chairs. Water in plastic glasses. I took the lunch special. I had lentil soup with pita bread. It was absolutely marvelous! Then I got the mix kabab (lamb and beef) plate. Two pieces of kabab, one tiny roasted tomatoes and too much of rice. The kababs were delicious but very oily. I was little saddened of lack of vegetables with the dish. Service was great and quick! I was happy to finally to eat at Château Kabab!

Yelp
Chateau kabab is our fav middle eastern restaurant, be it the downtown or west island location we are always satisfied. The variety (heavy or light plates) is definately there, the owners are very humble and grateful, they always go an extra mile to satisfy all your needs. Iranian and lebanese food under one roof makes it the best place for taking friends and family out for a dinner - we are positive that everybody will find a meal to their satisfaction! The complimentary tea is always fresh and tasty and keeps the conversation going on the table :) Highly highly recommend!!
google avatar

Sehrish N.

Yelp
Went with a friend for a quick bite. It's at an amazing location, near the metro and Concordia! The actual place is 2 floors. The second floor is beautifully renovated. The main floor is more for pickups with a few tables. We asked if we can sit upstairs but we were told we couldn't. After a few minutes another staff came and asked if we would like to go up; at this point we were settled in so we just stayed downstairs. They're food is great! Never have I been disappointed even during my uni days. They staff very polite, respectful and friendly. The service is great and the price is reasonable. We ordered the midi special; chicken and beef kabab plate. I loved the lentil soup which was served with pita. The meat was well cooked and seasoned served on onions. There was a lot of rice which I couldn't finish. There wasn't enough veggies. I would definitely go back in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
Big dishes, very tasty. The basmati rice was very good and the lamb was super tender. The lentil soup was awesome.

Khalid H.

Yelp
Very Delicious Food, Very Satisfying with Excellent Service: I went with my family (with a reservation). There was a delicious lentil soup, grilled vegetables, rice and various grilled meats especially the top notch grilled Kababs! There fries superfluous, pita, hummus and Epic Baba Ganoush. Hot tea with sugar followed the meal. The food came promptly. We love the beautiful and warm atmosphere where quality foods served by professional management and friendly and humble staff. They also have a praying area in the parking lot. I would definitely go back if I were in the area. August 23rd, 2021

Yelp
I had my 50th birthday dinner party and my son's 16th birthday dinner party at Chateau Kabab West Island January 12th 2019...we were over 40 people at the restaurant for the dinner party...as usual...the food was incredible, the staff were very friendly and efficient...and the owner made sure everything was perfect...and it was. I have eaten at almost all the top restaurants in and around Montreal...and i have to say this again...Chateau Kabab West Island is still our favorite place too eat...it is so good we even came back the next day (January 13th) for another AMAZING and beautifully cooked meal! ***Thanks again to all the staff that served all of us at my 50th dinner party...and we will be looking forward to eating there again next week!

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for many years. Although I haven't really dine in to the restaurant often but, last year I decided to do so with few friends and in March 19 2019. Although the food is very good that's why I go back over and over. But I can't say the same for their dining area it's Not Very Clean. I found the floor and the tables are sticky, the basket they use for the pita bread it's very sticky and very dirty, it was pretty gross and disgusting to even touch it and unfortunately the glass, plates & utensils are older it didn't look clean. If you go towards the end of the day you can actually smell coming out of the garbage. I'm giving 3 stars purely because of the food not for upstairs dining. Thanks

Yelp
I left a review on google following an interaction with an employee and I have attached the response I got. After delaying the delivery, hanging up, I'm also called a lier. This is a very new form of customer service that I have never come across. All the employee had to do was at least ask for confirmation, call the service that I placed my order through and they would have figured out that it wasn't an error made by me. This interaction that I have had with this restaurant is nothing less than comical. I rarely review anything but this was so upsetting I had to do it. The response I got shows exactly what it was I dealt with. Like I said never again!

Yelp
Having lived in the DC Metro area, I've been to more than a few Persian restaurants and I can empathically state that this place was excellent. The saffron chicken kabob was superb with excellent flavor. It was a slight bit different than a very traditional joojeh kabob but boy was it good. The baghali polo and lamb shank was also excellent. The meals were served with a very large salad and lentil soup, both excellent. They treated us to some humus which was also very tasty. Very impressed.

Yelp
I LOVE the food here. I used to go to Concordia and had a Lebanese friend in the area who introduced me to this place otherwise I would have never dared step inside. Seems like a lot of students and middle eastern diners come here. I've been a few times and can't ever recall seeing much mixed ethnicities. Chateau Kabab doesn't branch out to the whole population I find, and even when I brought my caucasian friends, their first impression was with raised eyebrows. They had a makeover in recent years although it is still by no means a fancy place, despite the nice walls, gold touches and lighting - it's more fast foody. I've had their Okra and Fasolia dishes, which are kind of like beef chili and bean stews in tomato soup, served with basmati rice, pita breads and salad. You get all that for around 11$. Portions are generous. It's a delicious hearty meal made with simple ingredients, I can't picture anyone not liking this dish. When I came with my boyfriend he ordered meat skewers or kabads, did not enjoy it, and never wanted to come back. I would recommend for a simple lunch, they also do delivery. No frills, no complaint kind of place. Tasty food and very affordable prices. The do have a website complete with menu and prices http://www.chateaukabab.com/index.php
google avatar

Razan A.

Yelp
Meat quality os great bur in the plate dish like okra they only put 2 small cupes and its for 13$+ thats so cheap of them ... the kakab palace! Otherwise they serve salad or soup with the meal so thats good and the restaurant is clean for dining
google avatar

Mustapha T.

Yelp
I really love this place, it's a classic kabob restaurant. The meat and the rice are always perfectly cooked and sooo good! The meat is always juicy and well flavoured. I always take the dish with two different kabob choices, one chicken and one spicy meat! They have the best lentil soup, it tastes perfection. The staff are nice too, and most importantly, it's pretty cheap Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of my plate, I was there to break my fast 2 days ago so I didn't think about taking a picture I was too hungy!
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
I was looking for a Shawarma fix and this place hit the spot. I had the chicken beef combo. It was well done, filling and served quickly. I would definitely come back and likely try the kabobs next!

Aramdokht S.

Yelp
The restaurant was dirty and gross. Although restaurant was quite, there were lots of dirty tables upstairs which were not being cleaned for half an hour. They use plastic cups for beverages which is not nice. Also the salt and pepper containers were greasy and disgusting to touch. The service was awful because no one was there to help you, a waiter just took our order and left. We had to get up search and find take out containers and plastic bag ourselves!!! About the food the meat was pink inside and uncooked, the soup was taste less. The salad was fine but they poured salad dressing without asking. There was too much turmeric in our shish kabab and barg. In the end, the cashier charged the tip automatically and he said over 50$ the tip (10%) is included!!! Overall, I don't recommend this restaurant at all.
google avatar

Shomoita A.

Yelp
Amazing kababs. So soft and juicy. I love the regular rice and the baghali polo that they have. It's so simple yet flavourful. I order from them mostly and also have been to the Guy restaurant a couple of times. The service is pretty fast and good. I'll try the mixed platters the next time. I heard that's a must try.
google avatar

Fey F.

Yelp
Generous portions, tender juicy kabobs & great service. You can do half rice & half salad & the plates come with side of lentil soup.
google avatar

Jaleebi S.

Yelp
My tour of food in Montreal continues w some tasty middle eastern fare. Loved the koobideh and the hummous. Of course the rice was delicious. Perfect for lunch!
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Really unique and authentic dining experience. If you aren't adventurous, you unfortunately might not appreciate this place as you should, but for those who do adventure, travel, experience, you will love this place. The portions are very generous and the so are the flavors in each dish. Very welcoming, very kind. Hope to go again every time I visit Montreal.
google avatar

Ali K.

Yelp
I have been to this place a few times and writing this review after having tried few different dishes and as a summary of different experiences. In total I am happy with the food they have. It comes with a choice of soup of salad and both of them are very good. Kebabs are tasty and delicious, their seafood is good (not perfect but for none-specialized restaurant is acceptable). You cannot get alcoholic drinks but other drinks (including Ayran) are good. Some of their dishes sometimes can be a little bit oily and heavy to digest for some people but if you remind them about it they will take care of it. Keep it in mind that the price they tell you at the cashier is tax and tip included.
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
I always go to chateau kabab whenever Im in downtown or in the west island and I feel like having a juicy kabab. A good plate of kabab comes with a good rice and I can confirm the rice is well made at this place. Ground chicken kabab is fatty and not my favorite but I love every other dish served at this restaurant.
google avatar

Chefbigo A.

Yelp
I'll make this short sweet. This was a great restaurant. Food, pricing, ambience, customer service = fantastic!!!!!!
google avatar

Sabrina B.

Yelp
Came here with my family for dinner. Place was packed but we made reservations, luckily: I recommend doing so. Food was definitely 5 stars. Everything was amazing, I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken koobideh and my husband could not complain either.. he had some sort of beef kabob (fillet mignon I believe). The price is very reasonable considering the quality of the food you're getting. The service was great.. employees are welcoming and joyful. Lost a star because I'm not a big fan of the atmosphere, although I'm sure this place caters to Concordia's student body... I wish it were ... cozier?
google avatar

Aella M.

Yelp
The food is halal so its a more ethical appropriate place to eat meat. The serving are generous. The waiters are attentive I love the gold and white decor. The bathrooms are clean. Part of the kitchen is visible. There is a decent seafood option. If you are dinning in . I suggest to have tea before the meal and to ask for some lemon. I had the fish options . salmon and tilapia and they were both great. I prefer the Dahl soup over the salad. I feel the rice is better than the fries . The dessert options are also a good option . I like this restaurant because upstairs is nice and quiet which gives me a break from the crazy downtown lifestyle .
google avatar

Ali A.

Yelp
This restaurant offer a mix of Persian and Arabic menus. Compared to similar places it is less expensive though. The staff are friendly and helpful. I tried Koobideh beef and it was acceptable. A bit salty I say but not irritating! The food comes with a choice of soup or salad. You can order dessert and tea if you'd like to. The desserts are mainly Arabic (sweeet !) The place itself is so simple but clean and inviting. There's no music and most of the time you can watch soccer on TVs there! Not loud however. If you plan a party and want to serve some kebab they have an option by which you can by a kilo of koobideh say and it is cheaper than ordering equivalent number of sticks. This is not the place for a date or family weekend getaway but a grab-plenty-of-good-food-for-less place where you can have lunch in your break at work or order out and enjoy it at home.
google avatar

Nurjahan B.

Yelp
This restaurant is a family favourite!!! Me and my family usually come here every couple of months because of how INCREDIBLE the food is. The staff is super nice and they always joke around with you making you feel comfortable in the restaurant and they always happily accommodate the meal to your liking. The food is soooooo tasty and even though I always get the same food it always feels as if I'm eating it the first time. My mom and I loveee their lentil soup especially with the pita and rice; we always change the fries for extra soup ahaha. Their kebabs are so soft and juicy and always cooked well; I'm personally a fan of the beef kebab which is funny because I don't like beef much. The portions are more than enough for one person and you're also allowed to take takeouts or take the rest of your meal as a takeout if you can't finish. Overall I highly recommend this place :) and I wish I had photos to share but I always dive into the food before taking any ahaha that's how you know the food is amazing.
google avatar

Yazeed H.

Yelp
This restaurant is a rip off. Food was too expensive! You could find cheaper prices from other middle eastern restaurants. Hospitality is also bad! I had to wait for an hour for my food, and the staff did not even care!
google avatar

Farhat A.

Yelp
Nice restaurant if you want to try iraqien cuisine in downtown of Montréal and close to Concordia University , the service was very good because we reserved a table for 3 people by the phone using this application , the food (chicken BBQ , rice, salad and appetizer ) was very tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Found Chateau Kabab online when looking for a halal restaurant in downtown Montreal. There was a halal certificate by the register. They have ample seating upstairs for dine in. Service was fast. We were a party of five and ordered the chicken seekh kabob, and 2 orders of the mixed kabobs and to the chicken seekh and beef seekh kabobs. Portions are generous, Two of us shared a kabob platter. The orders also came with a choice of lentil soup or a salad. The lentil soup was delicious. They also served us pita bread and butter. We ordered tea at the end of our meal and were pleased to know that it was complimentary. Would definitely come here again next time we are in Montreal.
google avatar

Tsuru J.

Yelp
MTL blog says that this is the one kebab place that you must check out in all of Montréal so my sister and I went there while we were in town. There is an upstairs and a downstairs and we got seated upstairs. The host was super friendly but the server was a bit curt. Also, service was pretty slow. It took quite a while to get up to the table and get the drinks and everything else. The food itself was good. Not the best kebabs I have ever had but I lived in Germany and guess that I am more of a fan of Turkish/German/Belgian style than Iraqi style? We also got baba ghanouj (their spelling not mine) and it was good/ok. Maybe I should have gotten something else off the menu because it was all just good/ok. Finally we realized the server was not going to bring a bill (never mentioned it nor did he ever visit the table after dropping off the food) so we went downstairs and paid. Yes it was good but I would advise sitting downstairs and maybe not sticking to the basics as it seems there are many better things to eat than the kebabs.

Sadia H.

Yelp
The food portions are humongous and halal. Its location on Guy Street is very convenient. I've tried most of the main dish platters and they're all delicious. The dishes consist of mostly rice and meat with salad or soup on the side. The soups are not great so take the salad but don't fill up on it - the main dish size is a handful. The main dishes's rice is fragrant and the meats are moist and tasty. The large meal platters are huge and can be easily shared between 10 people at least.

Neel L.

Yelp
This place is a mix of a takeout counter and a dining area (upstairs). It was my first time coming here after hearing great reviews of the place and I gotta say that it's really good! The meats are flavored excellently and the rice and tomato that it comes with complement the meat perfectly. The portions are pretty good too for the price! It's really not a fancy place so it's not too aesthetically pleasing but it will definitely please your tastebuds.
google avatar

Kanwal B.

Yelp
Omg so I love Persian food and have tried tons of places but this by far was the best place that I have gone too! The meats were cooked so well wirh the perfect seasoning and the waiter was amazing ! Will def recommend to anyone who wants authentic great tasting Mediterranean food . Their lentil soup was also very good
google avatar

Leila H.

Yelp
My friend ordered to go and as usual, I was not disappointed. There are alot of kabab places in montreal but Chateau Kabab is amongst the top ones. Their Guy location is extremely convenient and the one is west island has a nice seating. Yes it is extremely cheap for the portion you get, I don't understand people that complain about the salad when you get it including your meal, any other restaurant would charge it as an entré. It took a while for us to get the food but again when they're super busy, it`s quite understandable. The Kabab is super juicy and the shawarma is great as well. Overall, I recommend it :)
google avatar

Stuart L.

Yelp
I would leave less stars if I could. Worst Persian food I've ever had. Nothing was fresh, and if I wasn't as so hungry, I would have left it all and refused to pay. The four star reviews are totally inaccurate. Hope I'm not sick from this meal.

Yelp
Even though I go to Concordia I don't think I would have had the pleasure of visiting this place had an Iranian friend had not taken me here. Food was absolutely delicious. Tried the chicken, beef, and sirloin kababs and all were yummy pieces of smoky, juicy, and tasty goodness. The rice that came with the kababs was like crack. It was buttery and fragrant and enough of it that I think I could have split my plate with another person. The lentil soup that came with our meals was forgettable, but that's ok. Decent prices, very good food.

Yelp
Came in from Paris France for a visit and was welcomed by amazing customer service. The environment is clean and modern, great bathrooms. Most importantly: the food is amazing! Best I have had. My kids loved it and said it was delicious and yummy. A must go in the great location on Guy street.

Yelp
Best Persian kebabs in town! The atmosphere and hospitality reminded me of the middle east. The food was also 100% authentic! So fresh and delicious!

Yelp
I really enjoyed eating at this place. It's right by Concordia University. The prices are reasonable and the food was delicious. I had the shawarma and it was amazing. I ordered it with the roasted potatoes and it came with this garlic creamy sauce that was absolutely to die for.

Yelp
Good food and very filling, but I prefer Afghan kabob. The lentil soup is yummy, but not the best I've ever tasted. Go here if you're hungry and need a kabob fix.
