As a frequent visitor to SF, my preferred place to stay is always the Fairmont or Scarlet Huntington. This time, with the holidays and all, we decided to try the B&B experience that everyone seems to be raving about.
After an utterly forgettable Parker Guest House, we decided to try Chateau Tivoli Bed & Breakfast.
When I arrived at Tivoli, a kind, sweet lady named Janet welcomed me, showed me around and upon request, even showed me some other suits. The place is beautiful and the suite we were in (Mark Twain suite) was spacious and beautiful! In fact, I was so impressed with the place that I made reservations for Tetrazzini suite for our upcoming trip in February, right then and there! Haste is waste, and I would realize that soon.
The place was empty, I was the only guest at that point, possibly due to holidays (my guess) and was somewhat eerie. I was told that there would be a "full brunch" Sat and Sun, so I decided to go down to try that. My partner was not well, so it was just me at the table. The Manager of the property, who also moonlighted as the chef, brought me two slices of french toast, some sparkling cider and disappeared. I wondered if this was the "full brunch" or it was just being shorthanded as I was the ONLY guest there. I wanted to request for some coffee, but the guy never re-appeared. I waited for a bit, gave up and went back after the "full brunch". We never bothered to try their breakfast again.
The internet was slow, and choppy but I guess in non-business hotels, that is to be expected.
On the last day of our stay, weather worsened. Now that we had a large, spacious and beautiful suite, we decided to host a few close friends. But around 4 pm, the entire building was plunged into darkness due to a power outage. I went down after an hour, to check what was going on. The Manager informed that PG&E guys were looking into it and handed me a tiny flashlight. By then, the place was dark, stairs hard to climb and our suite was freezing. We sat huddled, figuring out what to do next. By around 6 pm, I got a text from the Manager that power would be expected only by 11.00 pm. In that freezing suite, there was no point hosting our friends. So we decided to cancel on them, and that really upset my partner.
By then, our laptops were dying, and so were cell phones, so we walked in the cold and rain to a Starbucks in the Jazz district on Fillmore to charge the phones at least to be able to book Uber. We had dinner, saw a movie and killed time in the cold weather, and arrived home around 11.45 pm. Still no sign of power. The place was quiet, creepy, and dark and all we had was a tiny torchlight and our phones. Internet was long gone, so emails were a forgotten thing. We tried to sleep but the cold was brutal. When we were literally shivering, we began to contemplate going to another hotel. But it was past midnight, and it seemed like a bad idea. I eventually called an old friend of mine and requested if we could spend the night at his place.
Embarrassed, we showed up at his place past midnight, charged our phones and spent the night on his couch. By then, we were bitter, sleepless, frustrated.
I immediately cancelled the reservations for Feb. We went back to Tivoli the next day and checked out. Power outages happen, but the utter lack of preparedness and the stoic indifference exhibited by the Manager was unacceptable. There was no backup power, candles or even a bit of concern for the cold and miserable guests. By far, this was the most miserable night we have spent in a long long time and we never felt so helpless.
At the end of the trip, my partner looked at me and said, "Can we please stay in a proper hotel next time?" My entire planning went down the drain with that one statement.
Some of our friends suggested talking to the owner to seek some refund for the terrible inconvenience caused and the total apathy by the caretaker, but we were so tired and exasperated by then, we just wanted to get away from there.
The property is nice, and Janet was super super sweet - this one star is solely for her. This stay at Chateau Tivoli will remain in our memory as one of the most horrific nights of our life.
Bye bye Tivoli, hope to never see you again!
