Le Mascaret

"Very attached to his native Manche (the northern département with Cherbourg at its tip), the adventurous Philippe Hardy has worked in some prestigious Michelin-starred restaurants and in the kitchen of the French ambassador in Sofia. It was there that he met his wife, Nadia, a former principal dancer. Together they have transformed this former girls' boarding school into a chic and sweet little hotel-restaurant. All around, the garden and the vegetable garden thrive, providing vegetables and aromatic herbs grown from saved seeds. The other big thing at Le Mascaret is the sea: the chef never misses an opportunity to make a delicious dish with wild fish and shellfish, at a bargain price." - Michelin Inspector

The Least Expensive MICHELIN Starred Restaurants in France

"From Paris to Lausanne, chef Philippe Hardy has worked in some of Europe's most prestigious kitchens, including the French Embassy in Bulgaria, where he became head chef. However, it was on his home turf, in Normandy, that he set up his first restaurant in 1995. Twelve years later, he moved the establishment to Blainville-sur-Mer and turned it into an inviting hotel-restaurant. In his perfectly executed dishes, he gives pride of place to local farm produce, which he serves alongside vegetables and aromatic herbs from his garden." - MICHELIN Guide

This is a wonderfully quiet place to stay. We had a great dinner with genuinely creative and subtle dishes as well as interesting teas. Breakfast too was imaginative and delicious. They went out of their way, without any fanfare, to help us after we lost a car key. Genuinely kind and hospitable people and a great kitchen. Highly recommended.

We ordered the "La Petite Table Menu," and it did not disappoint. It was one of the most inexpensive menus we've had so far. Everything was tasty, and the service was friendly. However, the drinks were on the expensive side, but that's to be expected from a one-star restaurant, right? It was absolutely worth the drive, and we highly recommend this place.

We were really looking forward to the restaurant/hotel, unfortunately disappointing. The room, furnished with decorated old electrical appliances and an antiquated bathtub in the middle of the room overlooking the parking lot was a harsh experience. The lady of the house told us the room was artistically designed by her... the food was quite good, I wouldn't have recognized it as 1 star Michelin. We had 10 great days in Normandy in 9 different hotels & restaurants.... all great, unfortunately except Le Mascaret, sorry.

The service was great, the table in the garden was very quiet and private... But good the food was amazing, particularly for the price tag, 26 euros for 3 courses and 45 euros for the fancier menu. Good wine selection as well. They also arranged a delicious alternative starter to arrange my wife dietary requirements. Sunny place well be back

Like most guests, the starred restaurant was the main attraction. The guest house has good bones and a lot of charming touches from the chef's spouse who was/is involved in its decoration. We even had some small paintings in our room with her signature on them.||Four weeks into a six week trip, and with some "rearranging of our bags in order, we were very grateful for a ground floor room. The room also had a microwave, mini-refrigerator and dishwasher, which we did not use. The outside of the appliances were painted with Mrs. Hardy's floral designs. The bedroom area was spacious and comfortable.||The bathroom had some pluses and minuses. The Rainwater shower worked surprisingly well considering that it was surrounded by two shower curtains. It was a bit precarious, as the main valve for the vertical flow was loose.||An attractive sink was placed on a rather small stand. Regrettably, it doesn't drain very well' even after the french equivalent of drain-o was applied. The main problem with the bathroom was the lighting. That near the sink was "one-sided" and too dim. You can imagine how shaving and makeup application could be compromised. ||We didn't use the spa facilities, and we were out and about during the day. But the location is peaceful, the staff are caring, and everything is spotlessly clean. ||So, it is a bit like staying in someone's house; distinctive and quirky. Fine for anight or two, but not really designed as a hotel. That is both the positive and negative aspect.||As one would expect from a fine chef, the breakfast was better than average and had some distinctive touches.| |

The menu is quite good and the price is reasonable. But why are the drinks so expensive?????? A bottle of mineral water 9,80. Each glass of wine (good but not excellent) 16, and the coffee 8,90. I can't understand this, and I do not come back because this

Since a few years, we try to visit at least once a year this beautiful Norman restaurant. After a small stagnation in the last years we were quite positively surprised at our last visit by the very attentive service and the really extraordinary menu. With a reduced set of ingredients and great accompanying emulsions, three very tasteful and delightful menu courses had been created :-) Thus, our today's family lunch was a very relaxed and wonderful experience - and for sure one of our gastronomic highlights in this year. Many thanks to Philippe and Nadia Hardy and their team for our lovely visit - we are looking forward to our next visit!

Sadly the review of the hotel has to reflect the sad dining experience we had there the previous night; after all, that was the reason for our stay.||The service was warm and efficient, both in the evening and the morning. ||The bed and the room were OK, but the shower is impossible to use without totally flooding the bathroom. ||Breakfast bore the stigmata of the previous night (see my review in the relevant section). The croissants and other breads bits were clearly from the lower end of shop bought offerings. Surely a Michelin starred restaurant should be making its own - especially at 17 euros per head for continental breakfast.||If these had been home made, then they really need to worry.||Still, at least they were consistent.
